We’ve all heard of the mob wife aesthetic, but these London street style Fall 2024 looks are giving British mob wife.

In case you’ve been on an Internet cleanse/living in the Witness Protection Program, the mob wife aesthetic can be characterized by Edie Falco’s Carmela Soprano: Giant fur coats are a must; animal print is considered a neutral and the higher the heels, the better.

In contrast, the British mob wife is more refined than rugged. These mobsters are professionals first, murderers second. Just because their work is messy doesn’t mean they need to be. Picture if Guy Ritchie did The Sopranos: Luxurious furs are accessorized with mod Mary Janes; white button-ups and ties are paired with leopard print and jewellery is kept to a minimum.

If Peaky Blinders isn’t quite your fashion forte, plaid and tartan are always mainstays at London Fashion Week. The cool weather also didn’t stop many street style stars from sporting short shorts and mini skirts. And of course, oversized blazers continue to be the outerwear of choice.

Check out the gallery below for all of the fashionable London street style Fall 2024.

What do Carole Lombard, Kate Moss and Michael Kors’s grandmother all have in common? According to the namesake designer, they’re all timeless. For the Michael Kors Fall 2024 show, Kors was inspired by iconic women of the 1930s and ’90s and presented a profound study of classic staples. Bias cut slip dresses, tailored separates and luxurious knits all dominated the runway and collectively painted a picture of a woman whose wardrobe will never go out of style.

“One of my hallmarks has always been fashion that stands the test of time,” says Kors in a press release. “And when we talk about what’s timeless and what endures—it’s quality, it’s simplicity, it’s sophistication, it’s clothes that make you feel confident and powerful.” Mission accomplished.

Zendaya is one of the 2024 Met Gala co-chairs

Zendaya is finally one of the Met Gala co-chairs and to quote Lizzo, it’s about damn time. Also helping Anna Wintour plan the fashion event of the season? Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth. This year’s exhibition is vaguely titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” and promises to display garments that are so fragile they’ve rarely seen the light of day (*cough* Kim K). As to the red carpet theme, Mrs. Wintour teased it’ll be themed around “The Garden of Time,” which translates to “melancholic and moody florals.” Apparently, florals are now groundbreaking.

Louis Vuitton’s Nicolas Ghesquière becomes a YouTube host

To celebrate 10-years of Nicolas Ghesquière as the Artistic Director of women’s collections, Louis Vuitton is launching the YouTube series, “Nicolas Ghesquière: Shaping Fashion.” Each 10-minute episode will feature the visionary designer chatting with an exclusive guest (think house ambassadors!) about everything from film to music to fashion, sprinkled with personal anecdotes.

“This series was something completely new for me. It was very enjoyable to take the time to look back, reflect and smile on how these past ten years have flown by… and it is a journey that has been shaped by the wonderful friends in each episode! With the pace of things today, it feels special to sit down and reminisce a little,” says Ghesquière in a press release.

Canadian brand Wynn launches a denim capsule collection

Mark our words, Wynn is a brand worth watching. Created by CAFA NewGen honouree, Lynne Weare, this Canadian label offers gender fluid, high-end, elevated basics that prioritize comfort. While in the past this has translated to mesh undies and dresses, Wynn has just launched a capsule collection made entirely from deadstock denim. Shoppable items include a wrap belt, buckle skirt and chaps, but our favourite piece has to be this crop top above.

Alexander McQueen teases a return to its roots

Michael Kors Fall 2024

Ahead of Seán McGirr’s debut collection for Alexander McQueen, the iconic British brand has released a few teasers of what to expect and there’s a lot to talk about. First — the logo! The house is dropping “Alexander” and reverting back to the original “McQueen” motif, with the C placed inside the Q.

Also, the images hint that something wicked this way comes. Stationed in a forest, models are sporting silver skull masks and tartan from the namesake designer’s highly controversial Fall 1995 “Highland Rape” collection. Will McQueen go back to its dark roots? Will we see a more odes to the ’90s? We’ll have to wait until March 2nd for the full reveal.

If you live in downtown Toronto, chances are you’ve spotted Maria Jurewicz on her daily commute. “I’m not a normal person walking around the city,” she jokes. But perhaps it just depends on your definition of normal. For Jurewicz, a strategic planning director at an advertising agency, a typical ensemble usually involves a vibrant bow-adorned coat, a campy novelty bag and a matching set of jewellery — mere hints of her massive Kate Spade collection. “I stopped counting at 500.”

Born in Ottawa and raised in Florida, Jurewicz grew up in a design-oriented household. While both of her parents are architects, she credits her mom with introducing her to the wonderful world of fashion. “She always made an effort to dress me up,” shares Jurewicz.

Throughout school, Jurewicz took great delight in colour-coordinating her outfits and matching her backpack, lunch box and even agenda to her clothing of choice. But her true Elle Woods moment came when she returned to Ontario to attend Queen’s University. “When I moved back to Canada, I remember thinking ‘This isn’t how people dress here — I have to try to blend in,’” she recalls. “But then there was a pivotal moment when I realized that wearing muted colours doesn’t make me happy. It isn’t who I am, and I’m OK with that.”

Enter the Kate Spade collection/obsession. Jurewicz began a years-long love affair with the brand before eventually getting a part-time job at a retail location, which she held for nearly six years. “I love that it’s joyful and unapologetically feminine,” Jurewicz begins. “The brand commits wholeheartedly to whimsy, but it’s still grounded in classic silhouettes, which is so me.”

Jurewicz describes her style as “’50s-ad woman meets Floridian retiree”; her apartment and collection look as if The Golden Girls and Mad Men had a crossover episode. Strands of pearls are organized in vintage chip-and-dip serving trays. Fruit-inspired novelty bags sit atop wicker shelves. And almost every item in the small space is colour-coordinated, including wallpaper, kitchen utensils, bathroom accessories, garment bags and shoe boxes — all (for the most part) by Kate Spade.

“I just ate up anything the brand created,” she explains, naming the ad campaigns, books and accessories of the 2000s and early 2010s. “As a marketing student, I was in awe of how it curated this all-encompassing lifestyle, and I treated it as a litmus test of what I would find interesting.” As such, she credits Kate Spade with influencing a lot of different areas of her life: her career in advertising, her love of “fashionable women with substance,” like Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy Onassis, and her newly formed Poshmark addiction (though most of her pieces are still bought through the brand itself).

But it’s the “polished, bright and sometimes cheeky” feeling Jurewicz gets whenever she wears one of her hundreds of pieces that keeps her coming back for more. She recalls a recent exchange she had in her local coffee shop, where a stranger stopped to share how much she enjoys seeing Jurewicz’s bright outfits every morning. “I dress for myself and to make myself happy, but it’s also really lovely when I brighten up someone’s commute,” says the collector. Suffice it to say, she definitely brings cheer — in spades.

Our apologies to Travis Kelce, but Taylor Swift and Blake Lively were the real love story at the 2024 Super Bowl, and you can’t convince us otherwise.

Although they shared a box with Ice Spice, Lana Del Rey and other celebs, Taylor and Blake only had eyes for each other (and the field) during the almost four-hour game. The famous friends shouted, screamed, swore, drank, danced, hugged, and overall just looked like they were having the time of their lives cheering the Kansas City Chiefs on to victory. Of course, later on Taylor and her new beau shared a High School Musical-like moment when she congratulated him on his hard-fought win but honestly, we were more interested in the platonic love that has seemingly blossomed overnight between the two blond bombshells. (Or did it?)

Below, we’ve created a brief timeline of Taylor Swift and Blake Lively’s friendship.

How did Taylor Swift and Blake Lively meet?

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Blake Lively Fan (@alwayslively)

Taylor Swift and Blake Lively’s meet cute wasn’t actually that cute — at least, not at first. In 2015, the former Gossip Girl star shared a photo from a L’Oréal campaign that referenced Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video with the caption: “Soooo, turns out this WASN’T a video shoot for John Legend’s cover of “Bad Blood.”

While some fans initially mistook the caption as Blake throwing shade towards Taylor, Lively quickly revealed she was a total Swiftie and didn’t mean any harm. The two eventually met up in Australia and the rest is herstory.

What was their first viral moment?

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Blake Lively Fan (@alwayslively)

The year was 2016; the era was 1989 Girl Squad; the occasion was the Fourth of July, and the vibe was full frontal PDA, minus Ryan Reynolds. At the height of the Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston summer love tour, the couple made their relationship Instagram-official with a *suspiciously* affectionate snap of them cuddling on a lawn chair. Beside them was Blake with her husband, who looked slightly less than happy to be there, and to say the internet noticed is a bit of an understatement.

Many commented the Deadpool actor looked “dead inside” while others mirrored his cringe reaction to the over-the-top PDA of Hiddleswift. Ryan later explained that he didn’t know there was a photo being taken and that his natural resting face is “one of a man dying.” Still, the photo might be gone, but it was never forgotten.

How many times have Taylor Swift and Blake Lively worked together?

If you consider Blake Lively’s kids an extension of her (which we do), then the super duo have worked together three times. The first was in 2017 when Blake’s eldest daughter, James, was featured on T.Swift’s song “Gorgeous.” The second was when she name-dropped all three of the Reynold’s children (James, Inez and Betty) in her Folklore song “Betty.” And the most recent time was when Blake directed the music video for “I Bet You Think About Me” in 2021. Honourable mention: Ryan’s Bob Ross-inspired cameo in “You Need To Calm Down.”

Is Taylor Swift a good aunt?

@much Oh to be #blakelively’s child in this moment… 🥹 #taylorswift #erastour [🎥: @The Eras Live ♬ original sound – MuchMusic

If this video of her with Blake Lively’s daughters at her Eras Tour is any indication then Auntie Taylor is definitely a favourite in the Lively-Reynolds household. Not only did Tay dress up as a squirrel to go trick-or-treating with the family in NYC in 2021, Ryan Reynolds has previously admitted to many at-home dance parties, going as far to say that his kids had no idea “Auntie Taylor” was famous, until they went to one of her concerts.

How has Blake supported Taylor’s relationships?

Taylor Swift and Blake Lively in New York City

Reason number 10,987 why Blake Lively isn’t like Serena Van Der Woodsen — she’s supportive of her friend’s relationships, both old and new. When Taylor was going through her breakup with Joe Alwyn, who was there to go to every hot spot in NYC? Blake. When the “Cruel Summer” singer needed a date to the film premiere of Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour? Blake suited up. Then, when Taylor Swift started dating Travis Kelce, who attended games in the fall, plus the 2024 Super Bowl? I think at this point you can guess.

What have Taylor Swift and Blake Lively said about each other?

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Blake Lively (@blakelively)

In the immortal words of T.Swift, it’s a love story, baby just say yes! Taylor Swift and Blake Lively have expressed their love for one another many times in many public ways. While there are perhaps too many to name some of our favourites include Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2021 Grammy Awards, when she won Album of the Year for Evermore and thanked “James, Inez and Betty and their parents who are the second and third people who I play every song that I write,” (the first, at the time, being ex Joe Alwyn).

She also name dropped her bestie when she won Favourite Pop Album at the AMAs — “”I want to take a moment to thank someone who directed the music video ‘I Bet You Think About Me,’ my beautiful, brilliant friend, my director Blake Lively.”

Not to be outdone, Blake has shown her love on Instagram. In honour of Taylor’s 30th birthday, she posted a photo of them hugging and wrote “Somehow, she’s even better in real life.” Similarly, back in 2020 she posted a closeup of Taylor and said “There was happiness because of you.”

Who else is part of Taylor Swift’s squad in 2024, besides Blake Lively?

Well, if Taylor’s rumoured $1.8 million box at the 2024 Super Bowl is to be believed, Ice Spice, Lana Del Ray, Keleigh Teller (Miles Teller’s wife), Ashley Avignone and mama Kelce herself, Donna. Other famous friends that weren’t in attendance include Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid, Emma Stone, the Haim sisters, Sabrina Carpenter, Queer Eye’sAntoni Porowski, Sophie Turner, Zoë Kravitz and of course, her favourite producer, Jack Antonoff and his new wife Margaret Qualley.

It takes a lot to make a room full of fashion editors giddy, but that’s exactly what happened when the FASHION team got together at our weekly production meeting and started discussing Paris Couture Week 2024. “Could you believe Alaïa?!” cried one of our directors. “What about Simone Rocha at Jean Paul Gaultier!” countered another. “Was this the best couture week ever?” asked editor-in-chief Bernadette Morra. And unequivocally, we all agreed it was — or, at least, the best in the last few years.

You see, couture is rarely quiet. While the origins of these luxurious collections are rooted in craftsmanship, quality, and attention to detail, they’ve recently become a bit of a shouting match. Why use one sparkle when thousands will suffice? Whose dress has the widest circumference? What look can get the most likes on Instagram? You get the idea.

But this Spring 2024 season has designers returning to a (excuse the overused phrase) quiet luxury of sorts. That’s not to say it was without its theatrics, opulence, and, yes, sparkle; just that dressmaking and sewing prowess got more of the spotlight.

A post shared by Maison Margiela (@maisonmargiela)

Take Alaïa, whose less is more approach to red carpet-ready gowns was a masterclass of refined taste. Creative director Pieter Mulier used only merino wool yarn and challenged himself to produce 43 very different looks. The result was a profound study of “the curve” and deserves to be seen on every A-list star for the rest of this awards season (hint, hint, Law Roach!).

Jean Paul Gaultier found similar success under the direction of Simone Rocha. Beautifully blending her dreamy aesthetic with iconic emblems of the Gaultier brand, Rocha created a collection unmistakably her own but showed depth and versatility well beyond her years in the industry.

And then there was Pierpaolo Piccioli at Valentino, who continues to prove why he is, and forever will be, couture’s Lord and Saviour. He presented an effortlessly elegant and colourful offering that, on the surface, looks simple to produce, but that is actually technical wizardry — ask anyone who’s ever sewn a seam. Florence Pugh will undoubtedly have difficulty choosing only one to wear on her next press tour.

And we haven’t even gotten to Schiaparelli, Chanel, Dior and more! See for yourself below as we’ve rounded up some of our favourite looks from Paris Couture Week 2024.

It’s been said that fashion is often evolutionary but rarely revolutionary. The glaring exception to this is the subject of a new Apple TV+ show, The New Look. It follows famous French couturier Christian Dior as he launches his historic collection that dared to take women out of the functional forties and into the extravagance of the 1950s. (Read: itty, bitty waists, and giant hoops skirts, which Harper’s Bazaar editor Carmel Snow christened, “The New Look.”)

While the series isn’t being released until Valentine’s Day, we’ve got our first sneak peek through The New Look trailer, and it features Ben Mendelsohn as Christian Dior, Juliette Binoche as Coco Chanel, Maisie Williams as Catherine Dior, and Glenn Close as Carmel Snow.

Is there a better way to unlock someone’s heart than with jewellery? We certainly don’t think so. Luckily, Tiffany & Co. has just the thing — Tiffany Woven Keys, a brand new collection of key-motif sparkles available in Vancouver.

Inspired by vintage designs from The Tiffany Archives (which date back to the late 1880s!), the new offering includes earrings, rings, bracelets and more in 18k rose gold, decorated with Tiffany’s legendary diamonds. As of Monday, January 15, Vancouver was the first city in Canada to receive the Tiffany Woven Keys and the only city outside of Greater China. But if you can’t make it to the West Coast or Greater China, the collection will be available globally in March. A golden key, indeed.

Being one of the internet’s boyfriends is a full time job. Just ask Pedro Pascal, who attended the 2024 Golden Globes with a broken arm.

Wearing a full look from Bottega Veneta, including a black and white turtleneck and black trousers, along with a pair of very zaddy glasses, the star of The Last of Us walked the red carpet wearing an arm sling. According to People, when asked about the injury, Pascal replied that he simply “fell” (…..k) but he didn’t let the accident stop him from having a good night. Ever the jokester, he had “ouchy” painted on his nails and made this hilarious reaction to losing the Golden Globe Award for Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series to Kieran Culkin.

Other members of the highly exclusive Internet’s Boyfriend club were also in attendance, sans a coordinating arm sling.

And our pick for best menswear of the night goes to Barry Keoghan. Wearing a look fresh off the Louis Vuitton Menswear Spring 2024 runway, the Saltburn star appeared red hot in a crimson suit featuring the brand’s iconic Damier pattern.

Is it a nod to his character’s true nature? A wink to the infamous vampire scene? Is he potentially a new ambassador for Louis Vuitton? Or is he simply just giving his fans more reasons to love him? Either way, just call us Keoghanites (Keoghaners? Keoghanians? You know what we mean).

There were a few internet boyfriends missing such as Saltburn-alum, Jacob Elordi, and Paul Mescal, who starred in All of Us Strangers with Andrew Scott. But to have so many on the same red carpet, let alone the same room, was truly a gift. Minus the Pedro Pascal Golden Globes arm cast, of course!

Have you ever had that dream where you’ve gone to an important event, but your lady parts are exposed? Well on the Golden Globes 2024 red carpet, Gillian Anderson is living it and she looks absolutely fabulous.

At first glance, the Sex Education star’s look is straightforward: a white strapless dress and red bag by Gabriela Hearst, accessorized with some simple (well, as simple as diamonds can actually be!) Chopard jewels and a handbag by Aquazzura. But upon closer inspection, you’ll be sure to notice a faint pattern adorning the fabric. Not polka dots. No stripes. But vaginas. Lots and lots of vaginas.

According to the actress the gown was embroidered with the female anatomy as a way of protesting restrictions to women’s rights.”[I wore it] for so many reasons,” the actress told Deadline. “It’s brand appropriate.”

And while we LOVE a heavy dose of feminism when it comes to fashion, many fans are also speculating that it’s Anderson’s tribute to the final season of Sex Education. After all, why not kill two birds with one stone?

But if you think she was the only 50+ starlet to kill the red carpet, let us enlighten you.

Taking a similarly minimalist approach, Julianne Moore proved redheads should always coordinate their hair colour to their dress, with a custom Bottega Veneta ensemble.

Meryl Streep was all business (show business, that is) in a sequinned skirt suit.

Hannah Waddingham looked sultry in a sheer lace mermaid gown.

And Sheryl Lee Ralph continued to prove why she’s the ultimate icon, in a black and yellow number. And there were so many more eye-catching looks!

While aging is usually a bad word in Hollywood, Gillian Anderson at the Golden Globes just proves that like a good steak, good style takes time to marinate.  And after the dozens and dozens of red carpets that these women have collectively walked, why not use your platform to make a political statement? Especially during a time where women’s rights have never been more in danger. No naked nightmares here.

The recently released Calvin Klein Spring 2024 campaign features the star of The Bear stripping down to his white boxers on a rooftop in downtown New York.

While the video is undeniably thirsty, the comments are somehow even thirstier. “I’m straight now,” shared one. “This feels illegal,” said another. And one user simply replied with a photo of a pregnancy test. Yes, chef, indeed.

How to look cute in cold weather outfits: it’s been a struggle since basically the beginning of time. How do you show off your legs without them turning into icicles? Can any heels survive six inches of snow? And can a winter coat ever truly look chic? All important questions, with often questionable results.

But fear not — we’ve taken on your winter woes and found a few game-changing formulas that can apply to virtually any ensemble. The trick? Pick a winter-proof statement piece and build the rest of your outfit from there. Think feather jackets, metallic boots and red-hot wools. Scroll below for a few cute cold weather outfit suggestions.

Drag queens know a thing or two about being glam. In fact, one could argue it’s literally their job. Whether they’re serving lewks on the Drag Race runway or lip-syncing at a Christmas drag brunch, they have to look fabulous at all times and that means maintenance! How do you make a red lip last for hours? What’s the secret to keeping your sheer tights in perfect condition? What about dancing in death-defying heels? These are all must-have skills for any drag superstar and also anyone looking to survive the holidays!

Below, Brooke Lynn Hytes, Jimbo, Veruschka/Viktor Peters, Tynomi Banks, Dakota Schiffer and Black Peppa share some of their best drag queen style tips.

Can you wear sparkles and feathers at the same time?

Jimbo: They should definitely be worn at the same time! Crystals and ostrich feathers are a drag queen’s best friend. It’s the holidays! Wear what makes you feel special.

Tynomi Banks: There’s a fine line between tacky and beautiful. Make sure it’s tasteful! The type of sparkles and feathers are definitely important. Ostrich feathers are my go-to — they’re just so light and fluffy.

Dakota Schiffer: Of course! There are no rules but I find keeping it monochromatic helps mute multiple clashing textures and looks more chic.

Is there a secret to making a bold lip last throughout a holiday dinner?

Jimbo: The secret is to eat slowly and take tiny bites. Avoid gravy and noodles and don’t lick your lips! Unless you’re looking to make a friend a ruin your lipstick anyway…

Brooke Lynn Hytes: Don’t make out with anyone or wear Haus Labs.

Veruschka/Viktor Peters: Line and fill your lips with a pencil. Lightly powder the lip and apply your choice of product on top. This will help with the longevity of your look.

Tynomi Banks: I pray to the good Lord himself and ask Him to protect my lips during the holiday season. This girl loves to eat.

Dakota Schiffer: I like to set a cream lipstick with eyeshadow and/or find a non-drying liquid lipstick. Using a lip stain is also great!

Black Peppa: As a high energy performer, I love a matte non-transfer lip. It lasts all night, even when I’m dancing, drinking and eating.

Any drag queen style tips on how to keep your tights looking flawless throughout December?

Jimbo: Buy more than one pair! Tights are a fickle beast — one moment they are smooth and beautiful, the next moment they’re snagged and ruined. Avoid looking cheap and get yourself enough pairs that you can just throw them away.

Brooke Lynn Hytes: Don’t wear them.

Tynomi Banks: Honestly, a nice cold wash works wonders, depending on how delicate the tights are.

What are your thoughts on press-on vs. gel and acrylic nails?

Veruschka/Viktor Peters: Personally, I prefer press-ons so I can remove them and just have my natural nails. But I’m loving all the creativity that goes into nail art!

Dakota Schiffer: I prefer gels myself, but I have been known to get acrylics when the look requires a dramatic nail. The key is to find a colour that’ll look flattering for as long as possible while it grows out and will help disturb your nails less.

Black Peppa: Press-ons! They’re quick to put on and easily come off.

How do you wear painful heels without dying?

Jimbo: It’s a mind over matter situation! Know your route and have a ride ready beforehand. Also, make sure the event has seating. If that doesn’t work, drink ’till you can’t feel your feet!

Brooke Lynn Hytes: You don’t. Give in to the pain then make it your b*tch!

Tynomi Banks: I am not a little girl anymore — I had to stop wearing stilettos. Now I buy chunky or wider heels to support my back. I also take breaks and sit down. It’s about knowing when to leave the party early.

Black Peppa: Tough it out like a true queen.

Who here hasn’t fantasized about having a Pretty Woman moment? You know the one: You walk into a high-end boutique and spend “an obscene amount of money.” Or better yet, you drop an obscene amount of someone else’s money, and then rub it in the faces of the people that had previously wronged you. “Big mistake. Huge!” It’s the perfect Cinderella fairytale moment, mixed in with some petty-yet-delicious revenge — a poor, insignificant person goes through a makeover montage and suddenly experiences the life of the one per cent.

This year, being rich (or pretending to be rich) was cooler than ever. Sofia Richie Grainge became an It girl overnight by channeling Coco Chanel. The Met Gala celebrated the man whose name has become synonymous with luxury (Karl Lagerfeld, in case you’ve forgotten). And concert costumes served infinitely more glamour than any red carpet. (See: anything Beyoncé wore during her Renaissance Tour.) But what’s the proper way to wear your wealth? In 2023, quiet luxury vs. loud luxury was up for debate.

The first half of 2023 was dedicated to quiet luxury. The trend — which gained popularity thanks to Succession’s final season, Gwyneth Paltrow’s ski court case and Sofia Richie Grainge’s wedding— rejects the desire to show off. Instead, quiet luxury favours items with hefty designer price tags that (silently) scream “If you know, you know.” Think of Phoebe Philo’s new collection as a prime example. There wasn’t a logo to be seen but a black leather bomber will cost you upwards of $6,900 USD.

Then in May, Beyoncé entered the chat. Never one to fade into the background, Queen Bey brought loud luxury to life with her viral Renaissance Tour outfits. A custom Alexander McQueen sparkle dress for one song, a campy Loewe bodysuit for the next. Each city brought a new level of decadence that fans started quickly replicating. (Why else do you think silver is still trending?)

Shortly after, Taylor Swift upped her sequin and fringe game during her Eras tour, the Barbie movie had us thinking pink with #Barbiecore, and the Hunger Games prequel brought everything from flame-inspired gowns to 3D flowers to the red carpet.

Most recently, Timothée Chalamet is serving some major Wonka realness in candy-coloured velvet and latex suits. A far cry from camel coats and navy trousers of the previous months, indeed.

But whether you prefer quiet luxury vs. loud luxury, both trends are ultimately a response to the same thing: the 2010s. As Highsnobiety writes in the 2019 book, The New Luxury, the past decade was defined by “how streetwear and sneakers have not only infiltrated the upper tiers of fashion, but became it.”

The 2010s rejected the old-money aesthetic in all its forms. Athleisure became an acceptable style to wear to both the gym and the ballet. Nontraditional designers like Ye and Virgil Abloh shot up to superstardom. Runners became a suit’s best accessory. It was only a matter of time before fashion got fed up with being so casual, and wanted to be more polished. Add in a global pandemic and more than a year of lockdowns in loungewear and ta da — luxury (in all its interpretations) is having its resurgence.

Nevertheless, as 2023 proved with its many (MANY!) micro-trends, we no longer have to choose one aesthetic and stick to it. There’s enough room in your wardrobe for Beyoncé-inspired corsets and Jennifer Lawrence-approved cashmere. Fashion is at its best when it’s both inspirational and aspirational; fantastical and functional; quiet and loud. To only choose one? Big mistake. Huge!

Sailors have been using the stars for centuries to navigate uncharted waters, but we can guarantee they didn’t look this good while doing it. For Louis Vuitton Men’s Pre-Fall 2024 collection, creative director Pharrell Williams was inspired by “the slipstream of the seafarers who let the moon and the stars guide them to new horizons.”

Staged in Hong Kong along the Avenue of Stars on Victoria Harbour, the waterfront proved the perfect backdrop for the nautical clothing, as modernized sailor suits, flared pants and novelty headwear went down the runway. No boating skills required.

“To be young seems easy; and to be an adult seems manageable,” writes Joyin Rey about his new Spring 2024 collection. “But things become complicated in the liminality of young adulthood.”

As such, the young Canadian designer has named his new warm weather offering — which made its debut on his Instagram this week — “Dichotomy.” Oversized sleeves are paired with pleated waists. Long bubble skirts mix with cropped jackets. And many more opposites attract in a collection that shows a maturity well beyond Rey’s years.

It started slowly with some jokes about side parts. Next, came the word “cheugy” and making fun of “business casual clubwear.” But coming after mom jeans? For millennials, that meant war.

Back in October, creator @indigotshai (who happens to be a millennial herself — the betrayal!) released a video about styles that age millennials. In it, she shows a street style image of a woman wearing a black sweater, tucked into her high-waisted jeans, and accessorized with black ankle boots. A perfectly reasonable outfit, no? Apparently not.

@indigotshai True Life: Becoming Karen 👖 #millenialhumor #microinfluencer #microinfluencertiktok #creatorfund #discoverunder1k #discoverunder5k #greenscreen ♬ original sound – Indigo ! 🇵🇸

“I can’t believe I’m even having to explain this right now, but stop. Just completely stop with the mom jeans,” Indigo exclaims in the video that has now been seen 1.4 million times. “They are embarrassing at this point. This look is so painfully old. I’m beyond words that I even have to discuss this.”

Doubling down, the content creator released a companion video shortly after that added skinny jeans, lip fillers, overly arched brows, cat eyeliner, and slip dresses to the unofficial “do not wear list.” She even went as far as to call brown suede booties “the Facebook of footwear.”

Whether you call it mom jean loyalty or the straw that broke the camel’s back, millennials arrived (and continue to arrive, as the video is once again trending) in hoards in the comment section, blasting Indigo for her bold opinions. “Imagine the personal growth, hell even the outward community growth that could happen if you dedicated this energy to actual problems,” responded one person. “I’m 30. I’m ok with knowing an 18 year old doesn’t think I dress cool,” wrote another. “Leave us alone already fr. We are tired,” echoed many. Thirty and forty-somethings haven’t been this united since the Game of Thrones finale.

So as our resident zillennial (I’m on the cusp of both demographics, thus occupying neutral territory), I feel it is my responsibility to say the following: Gen Z — you need to calm down.

@bobrownn Millennial (1981-1996) VS GEN-Z (1995-2012) – SPRING OUTFIT 🌸🌼💗 – Let me know which style suits you the best 👀 SAVE FOR LATER & hit the + for daily #stylinghacks & #womenswear 💗 #genzstyle #styling #millennial #millennialfashion #stylingtips ♬ Players x Without Me – ARNEL REMIX

For a group that claims that fashion has no rules, you are certainly imposing many on your older cohorts. What happened to fashion freedom? What happened to embracing your own unique style? What happened to trying cottagecore, tenniscore, gorpcore, businesscore, Barbiecore and every other core that lasted approximately 0.7 seconds on TikTok? You’re allowed complete clothing autonomy but millennials aren’t? That’s not fair.

Also, aren’t you the generation that values sustainability above all else? How environmentally friendly is it to expect millennials to buy a whole new wardrobe every time you come up with another fashion ick? I have shirts that date back to my early university days that may not pass your trend test, but they’re classics that I’ll happily keep out of landfill for as long as I can. And if we’re pointing fingers, let’s not forget you may have resurrected thrifting but the famously unethical Shein is predicted to surpass both H&M and Zara in the next year. And who do you think is their main demographic? Just saying…

@allaboutskinstudio #duet with @user4217435045036 #corecore I love the world of social media and skincare but its so sad to me that such a young girl felt the need to start an anti ageing routine at 12. #antiaging #teenageskincare #antiageingskincare ♬ 原聲 – onlyflip

But Gen Z, please listen closely to what I’m about to say: it’s OK to get older. It’s not something you should be afraid of, but embrace. Yes, the #GrandmaCore hashtag has over 200 million views, but teens are still sharing their anti-aging skin care routines and freaking out about how they look in AI aging filter (more on this here). Millennials aren’t in their twenties anymore, and that’s alright. They aren’t supposed to be — that’s literally how life works! They’ve come out on the other side, slightly bruised, but (hopefully) more comfortable in themselves and in their style. They have pre-school drop-offs, board meetings, therapy sessions and a million other events where wearing organ-defying corsets and platform flip-flops won’t cut it.

So please, Gen Z: Leave millennials alone. They’re famously the most stressed generation alive — living through multiple recessions, housing crises, pandemics and wars will do that to you — so they truly can’t take on the pressure of pleasing random 18-year-olds (or self-hating fellow millennials). This is the circle of life. Just as millennials made fun of Gen X’s original mom jeans and loafers, here they are refusing to let them go. There will come a time when your low-rise cargo pants and tube tops will be the butt of every Generation Alpha joke, and it’s coming sooner than you think. Wouldn’t hurt to make some older, wiser allies.

You thought The Hunger Games were hard? Trying shopping on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. From fighting the IRL crowds, to scouring the web for the best deals, this time of year is equal parts exhilarating and overwhelming. With seemingly every brand on the planet offering exclusive discounts and crazy sale prices, it’s an information overload. But that’s where we come in.

You can’t go into the shopping arena without a strategy so let us be the Haymitch to your Katniss, the Coriolanus to your Lucy Grey (from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, of course). Don’t be distracted by all the shiny objects and instead prioritize the products you actually need. Below, we’ve rounded up the best Black Friday shopping tips from the FASHION editors. And may the odds be ever in your favour.

Bernadette Morra, editor-in-chief: Say no to impulse buying

“Black Friday fever is real. Do: sit down and make a shopping list well in advance and do your best to stick to it. Don’t: purchase on impulse. Only buy what you really need or what will make your heart sing, even months or years from now. How often do I follow my own advice on this? Almost never! Though I do believe these Jenny Bird earrings will be a long term love.”

Annika Lautens, fashion news director: Do your research beforehand

“Tell me you’re an eldest daughter without telling me you’re an eldest daughter. I’ll go first: I plan, buy and wrap presents for 20-plus family members every year. But don’t get me wrong, it isn’t forced labour — it’s my preferred seasonal hobby. So, I approach Black Friday with tactical precision. One of my best Black Friday shopping tips is to do your research beforehand. If you want to get your dad a cable-knit sweater à la Billy Crystal, have a few options at the ready. Then, once the sale starts, compare prices for the best deal. Apologies in advance for the number of tabs you’re sure to have open.”

Jennifer Berry, digital director: Watch your shopping cart like a hawk

“I’ve never been to a casino, and I’ve bought like two lottery tickets in my life, but I do like to play a little game called ‘shopping cart roulette’ wherein I create fantasy carts on all my favourite online retailers, including designer e-comm spots like Ssense and Holt Renfrew, and high street meccas like H&M. Then, as sale seasons approach, I watch those babies like hawks, waiting for prices to keep dropping. The longer an item stays in the cart without selling out, the more of a thrill I get. At some point, I get serious, delete the fantasy items, and hit ‘purchase.’ It’s like a wish list but a little more titillating. This time around, I’m stalking cute handbags, like this minimal design from Staud, because a black shoulder bag is a need, not a want, no?”

Souzan Michael Galway, acting beauty director: Stock up on multi-purpose items

“When it comes to shopping for beauty products during Black Friday, things can get overwhelming fast. To avoid getting caught up in the madness and ending up with a cart full of dozens of items you probably don’t need (and probably don’t have the space for — when was the last time you cleaned out your makeup kit, by the way?), I recommend scooping up a more substantial item that you can not only use daily, but that you’ll have for a while. On my wish list is the Huda Beauty Empowered Eyeshadow Palette. Featuring 18 shades — including classic, everyday hues like matte black and brown, plus a few metallic shades and fun colours like violet and copper — the eyeshadows can also be used as eyeliners and even highlighters. We love a true do-it-all product.”

Natalie Michie, social media/market editor: Quality over quantity

“Each year, Black Friday approaches with get-your-credit-card-ready urgency that puts you in the mood to buy it all. But I can attest that falling prey to this immediacy results in purchases you simply won’t use. Because Black Friday bleeds into Cyber Monday, I think of the event as a weekend-long affair for deciphering which deals are worth going after. My suggestion? Adopt a quality-over-quantity mindset, and take your time before clicking ‘buy.’ This approach has allowed me to focus on the things I really, truly need, like these Sandy Liang Mary Janes.”

I wish I had listened to some key holiday dressing tips when I was younger. It might’ve saved me from ripping my dress.

Quick story: Years ago, I attended a fancy festive dinner at a steak house. I was stuffed to the brim with meat, bread and potatoes when something tickled my nose and I sneezed. RIP! The entire left side of my torso popped out of my dress. Was I mortified? Of course. Did I wear my coat for the rest of night after claiming to “have a chill”? You betcha. Do I have regrets? Only that I wore a fragile vintage frock with a tightly fitting bodice to a food-oriented event. (The prime rib was 100 per cent worth an unexpected trip to the tailor)!

Holiday outfits are a tricky beast to tame. For most of us, it’s the one time of year we have an excuse to dress up and we want to make every occasion count. We may not have control over our opinionated families or whether gifts arrive on time, but we can control the amount of sparkles we wear on a given night.

However, with so many brands flooding our feeds with sequins, shimmer and other shiny clothing options, it can all feel a bit overwhelming. Below, we’ve rounded up a few editor-approved holiday dressing tips that are both fashionable and functional. And yes, one of them does involve food.

Ask your host about the *vibe*

holiday dressing tips

There is a big difference between a casual cocktail among colleagues and a charity gala. Don’t be afraid to ask the host if there’s an unofficial dress code (there usually is) and choose the vibe of your outfit from there. When in doubt, you can never go wrong with a going out top and trendy trousers.

Evaluate the guest list

holiday dressing tips

Consider who will be at your holiday party. Will you be doing shots with your friends or sipping wine beside your boss? As such, one of our holiday dressing tips is to wear clothes that show the level of skin you’re comfortable with. It might be better to save the micro mini for a wild night out and opt for a midi-dress with a boatneck for your corporate function. This one from Reformation is our current fave.

Shop Now

Consider whether you’ll be standing or seated most of the night

holiday dressing tips

To sit, or not to sit, that is the question. Will you be trapped at a dinner table for three hours or will you be strategically leaning on walls while mingling? If the former, dare to wear your highest heels — you’ll only need to walk in them from the car to the venue and back. If it’s the latter, do your feet a favour and opt for flamboyant flats like these embellished Jeffrey Campbell ones.

Shop Now

Remember: waistbands are overrated

holiday dressing tips

Holiday dressing tip number four: Who needs a waistband? There’s a time to be strapped into a corset-like contraption and there’s a time to eat — and they rarely happen at the same event. So if you have plans to dive deep into a food coma, may we introduce you to the viral Hill House ‘Nap’ dress, which features stretchy fabric and smocking at the waist.

Shop Now

Yes, it will be warm inside the venue

holiday dressing tips

Repeat after me: It will be warmer than you think! Sure, it may be -10ºC outside but inside is a whole different story. If you know you run hot, abandon all ideas of a sweater dress and opt for something sleeveless. We love the look of the velvet straps on this Alice + Olivia number.

Shop Now

When it comes to accessories, texture is your friend

holiday dressing tips

Another one of our holiday dressing tips is to play with textured accessories. Think lace, velvet, pleats, metallics, pearls, appliqués, feathers, embroideries and more! Not only are they great conversation starters, but by simply swapping your purse, you can be an outfitter repeater and everyone will be too blinded by your bag to notice.

Shop Now

Sequins can be sophisticated

holiday dressing tips

It’s totally normal to feel intimidated by sequins. When done right, you can look like a young Liza Minnelli at Studio 54. When done wrong, you can look like an old Liza Minnelli in Sex & The City 2 (love you, Liza!). Pro tip: Stick to a single colour to avoid veering into cosplay territory. We love this monochromatic matching set from Mango.

Shop Now

Play with proportions

holiday dressing tips

Baggy, wide-leg pants? Wear them with a tight top. Oversized button-down shirt? Pair it with short shorts. While this holiday dressing tip isn’t just for festive fêtes, it’s an easy way to look effortlessly stylish. Bonus points for pairing black and white with red, à la Valentino.

Shop Now

Put a bow on it

holiday dressing tips

Let’s be honest: Your presence is a present in itself. Why not remind people by wrapping yourself like a literal gift? When wearing bows, think in extremes. Smaller ones are better in excess whereas bigger ones are enough of a statement on their own. These magenta party shoes by Naturalizer are the finishing flourish to any outfit.

Shop Now

When in doubt, wear red

holiday dressing tips

Red may have been the It colour of the fall but it will always be a holiday staple. Another one of our holiday dressing tips? Don’t be afraid of the spotlight and opt for a streamlined silhouette as seen on this dress by Magda Butrym. The only downside to choosing the festive statement colour? People might notice if you leave the party early.

Jill Killeen has never considered herself a collector. In fact, when FASHION reached out to the principal of Killeen Communication Strategies about being featured, she was shocked. “Doesn’t everyone have 187 brooches?” she laughs. They certainly do not.

Killeen, who grew up in a small town in New Brunswick, doesn’t describe her childhood home as a particularly fashionable one but shares that both of her grandmothers took their style quite seriously. She likens her maternal one to Midge from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in that she was a quintessential ’50s woman. “She was always in a skirt and sweater — I rarely saw her in pants.”

Killeen would often borrow her grandmother’s book on royalty and pore over the pages that featured Grace Kelly. She was so inspired that she admits to sneaking into the matriarch’s room and trying on the small tiara she kept hidden in a set of drawers. “It was the first piece of truly sparkling jewellery that I ever saw,” she reflects. “I was instantly captivated by it.”

While Killeen certainly got her soft spot for sparkles from her mom’s mom, it was her paternal grandmother who first introduced her to the wonderful world of pins — albeit the big floral kind à la Carrie Bradshaw. But it wasn’t until Killeen was in her late teens and going to school in Toronto that she purchased her first “real” brooch. “It was probably around $20, but back in the mid-’80s, that was all my grocery money for a week so I had to have a layaway plan,” she laughs.

Fast-forward a few years (after a move to Vancouver) and Killeen has become a bona fide brooch biographer. Her expertise is unparalleled; she effortlessly labels and describes each stone and the significance of its design as if she were a museum curator conducting a tour. Her collection is mainly concentrated on pieces from the 1950s (consider it her maternal grandmother’s influence), with an emphasis on Canadian costume-jewellery designer Gustave Sherman. Her bejewelled bounty also includes items from more modern masterminds, like Alan Anderson, whom Killeen used to work with. “I was never paid in money; I was paid with jewellery — and that worked out just fine for me,” she laughs.

Killeen finds other brooches at vintage stores and online marketplaces like eBay. The key, she says, is never to go searching for something specific. “When I’m looking at a tray of pins, I very quickly know which one I want,” she reveals. “It’s an immediate connection — I’m drawn to it.”

What exactly is she drawn to? She says, staying true to her younger self: “It’s the sparkle, the design and the way the pieces make me feel. When you put on something that makes you feel powerful, you believe you can take on the world. I hope that every time I walk into a room, I’m making a statement. I want what I’m wearing to start great conversations, and I’ve met some great people because of that.”

As such, Killeen’s advice for those who want to jump on the brooch bandwagon is to start with something that you love, even if it’s small. “People think that these pieces should be saved for special occasions, but I have no fear wearing them every day,” she says. “Brooches are accessible at all levels. Find your entry point, and if it makes you feel special, wear it.”

BOY WONDER

From his romantic roles to his playful personality,
Lucien Laviscount doesn’t just shine; he sparkles.

WORDS BY ANNIKA LAUTENS

Lucien Laviscount is taking off his shirt, and I’m not entirely sure how to react. I’ve just popped onto his screen; he’s far away from the camera in his hotel room in London, England. At first, all I see is a flurry of activity. Running a little late for our interview, Laviscount is a chaotic blur, rushing to change. As he rips off his hoodie, I get a glimpse of his six-pack (or is it eight?) before he adjusts his white undershirt.

Sweater, $5,550, Loewe. Necklace (top pearl), $4,000, necklace (bottom pearl), $2,700, necklace (top chain), $2,550, and necklace (bottom chain), $5,250, Tiffany & Co.

“Hello?” I stammer, my face redder than a tomato during peak summer season. Slightly startled, he saunters over and says an enthusiastic hello. After I apologize profusely for catching him in a somewhat private moment, he begins to laugh. “I call bullsh*t,” he exclaims, smiling cheekily. “You’re not sorry. You’re not sorry one bit!” And he’s right —I’m not.

Laviscount currently holds the coveted title of “the Internet’s Boyfriend.” While Brits might be quick to clock him for his early roles on the long-running soap opera Coronation Street or the BBC teen drama Waterloo Road, he didn’t puncture the North American pop-culture bubble until 2021, when he joined season two of Netflix’s Emily in Paris. His character, Alfie — the suit-sporting banker with a heart of gold — was originally supposed to have more of a supporting role as the third person in a love triangle with Lily Collins’s Emily and Lucas Bravo’s Gabriel. But he quickly became a fan favourite and was promoted to a series regular for season three, although it’s unclear if we’ll see him in the upcoming fourth season.

While the actor can’t comment (this interview took place during the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike), Alfie supporters are collectively crossing their fingers, and I can see why. It’s really hard not to fall in love with Laviscount. Let’s put aside for a second his giant smile, chiselled jaw and bulging biceps. And let’s ignore the British accent and the way he refers to me as “luv” throughout our conversation. Behind all that, he’s a playful puck who quotes Cool Runnings, radiates positivity and loves to talk about his feelings. Swoon. To Laviscount, everything is amazing. Living in Antigua is amazing! Owning a bar in London is amazing! His fans are amazing! He even interrupts my questioning to show me how amazing the London sunset is. “I wish you were here to see it,” he says. Double swoon.

I THINK MANY PEOPLE SAY THEY LOVE YOU TOO LIGHTLY. WHEN I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU. AND TO ME, THAT’S FOREVER.

That’s what makes Laviscount such a great heartthrob for now. Like his counterparts Timothée Chalamet, Pedro Pascal and Paul Mescal, he has found the golden ratio of sensitivity and silliness, paired with a perfect physique and a fashion-forward sensibility. That’s not to say he’s immune from the pressures that come with being one of the internet’s boyfriends or the child of two bodybuilders. But he assures me that his parents never forced him down any particular path. Instead, his British mom and Antiguan dad drilled into him the importance of hard work and passion and taught him to love himself. “I grew up in Burnley, one of the most racist places in England,” he explains. “No one was going to pat me on the back. No one was going to help me out. What am I going to do? Wallow? No. My parents taught me that I have to be better — be more. And if you’re going to do something, do it with your whole heart.”

Laviscount says he finds there’s nothing sexier than when someone shares that same outlook on life and unapologetically owns who they are. I ask if he’s currently in love, and it’s the only time he pauses in our hour-long conversation. I can see him searching for the right words and trying to decide how much of himself he wants to reveal — he’s notoriously private about his personal life, especially when it comes to dating. “I have my family, my friends and the people who are closest to me whom I love very, very dearly,” he begins rather coyly. “I think people put a lot of pressure on one person to be their person, but it’s impossible for one human to tick every box. A beautiful bird finds you and lands on your shoulder and you want to put it in a cage? No, no, no! I just want to open the world to that person even more. They should make you feel weirder, crazier, more ambitious, more loved and freer than you did before.”

Another pause. “But do I have that person in my life? I have people in my life,” he says, carefully dodging the question. Sorry, everyone — I tried my best.

While he’s cagey about who he’s currently courting, there’s no hiding the fact that Laviscount is a romantic at heart. Growing up, the actor admits he was a “cocky little kid.” He was discovered at the age of 10, when he was shopping with his mom. Enamoured with a teenage shop attendant, Laviscount fearlessly approached her and asked if she’d like to go out. While he didn’t get a date, he did end up getting a gig, as a casting agent overheard the exchange and was impressed with his confidence. His first job? Modelling for David Beckham’s kids clothing line. After that, acting came quite naturally.

But, to be fair, his mom deserves some credit. “She is the most wonderful, wonderful woman,” Laviscount begins, getting a little emotional. “Every night, my mom would climb into bed with my brother and me and read us bedtime stories until we fell asleep. That had a massive impact on me, because now, all I want to do is tell stories in whatever format I can, whether it be through art, music, acting or whatever.”

Sweater, $2,250, pants, $1,620, and necklaces and ring, prices upon request, Prada.
Top, $895, boots, $2,305, and pants, necklace and ring, prices upon request, Alexander McQueen.

When I ask if he considers fashion a form of storytelling, I’m met with a loud “F*ck yeah!” He describes his red-carpet clothing as a persona of sorts, one that he “can put on or take off” when he wants to. “It’s about how I’m feeling and what message I want to put out that day, luv.”

Sometimes that means rocking an orange leather ’70s-inspired jacket with a psychedelic silk scarf. Other days it’s a classic James Bond-esque suit. (Rumours have been swirling that he might be in the running.) Or, in the case of his viral look from the 2023 Vanity Fair Oscars Party, it’s about playing with gender tropes. “I wanted to look like Audrey Hepburn from Breakfast at Tiffany’s with Black Panther’s Wakanda on top,” he jokes. “But it’s crazy how much you can offend people with what you wear.”

Laviscount reveals that the velvet Dolce & Gabbana jumpsuit he wore — which he and his stylist, Danyul Brown, accessorized with a corset, long gloves and a statement collar necklace — earned him some backlash. “I feel sorry for a lot of men,” he says, reflecting on the conservative constraints of masculinity. “I f*cking love wearing a suit, but there’s a lot more fun that you can have.”

lucien laviscount fashion
Jacket, $5,140, pants, $1,295, and boots, $2,425, Dolce & Gabbana. Necklace, $8,950, Tiffany & Co. Ring (left), $375, and rings (middle and right), $280 each, Dean Davidson.
Jacket, $2,675, Versace. Necklace (top), $17,900, necklace (middle), $27,900, and necklace (bottom), $32,500, Tiffany & Co. Ring (left), $375, and ring (right), $225, Dean Davidson.

Ever the optimist, Laviscount says his takeaway from the experience is that, like acting, fashion is a powerful form of expression. “A song can change your day, an album can change your month, a movie can change your year, but a look can change your life,” he explains. “If you feel empowered wearing that outfit on that day, it can change every decision you make.”

But Laviscount isn’t in the habit of looking back — he’s firmly and happily in the present. And presently he has to rush to catch a plane back to his home in Antigua. “Three hundred and sixty-five beaches, luv,” he says with a wink. “You can come visit whenever you want.” I accuse him of being a flirt, and he laughs and gives me the same reaction he had when I caught him changing.

Before he signs off, we somehow find ourselves discussing the TikTok trend “What is the equivalent of flowers for guys?”— a series of videos in which male content creators weigh in on what they’d like to receive as a romantic gesture. “I am so simple and so easy to please,” he shares. “Just look me in the eyes and tell me you got me.” I do look at him, but rather skeptically. “It’s really that simple?” I ask. He nods. “That’s the root of everything. That’s all I need. I think many people say they love you too lightly. When I love you, I love you. And to me, that’s forever.” Swoon.

Phoebe Philo’s new collection was revealed on October 30, and the fashion world still hasn’t recovered.

For those who haven’t been stalking her career, the designer made her name at Celine, where she was the creative director from 2008 to 2017 and gained a cult-like following for her easy approach to high fashion. Nearly six years later, Phoebe Philo’s eponymous debut collection brought the same energy, as well as an ultra-luxury price tag. As expected, most of the pieces sold out instantly, but there are still a few items you can get your hands on if you act fast.

Anchoring the offering in “versatility and timelessness,” the capsule includes chunky cashmere sweaters, shearling jackets, skirts, capes, jeans and more that would look right at home in any fashionable Canadian or Italian city.

There is perhaps no better example of an overachiever than Nikhil Kapoor — although he’d never admit it. Raised in California, the 22-year-old content creator (@poshheat) studied biochemistry and molecular biology in college. His initial plan was to go to medical school, and he even got in. “But as much as I love science, it was just going to be too much work, so I decided to go to law school,” Kapoor shares, ignoring how absurd it is that he considers law school an easier alternative.

Somewhere in between cramming for finals and bingeing Queer Eye, Kapoor launched a gender- and size-inclusive clothing line called Posh Heat. “When I first started becoming more stylish in college, I never realized how difficult it would be to find fashionable clothes in my size,” he explains. “There are no plus-size men’s sections, so 90 per cent of my closet was (and still is) from the women’s department. That’s when I started Posh Heat.” But becoming a social media sensation was never part of Kapoor’s plan.

He originally took to TikTok in 2020 to share his designs with his friends and family. Shortly after, he branched out into more size-inclusive content with mediocre results, so he looked to his closet and Pinterest for inspiration. Kapoor filmed the video “When Plus-Size Men’s Fashion Pinterest Inspo Doesn’t Exist” in 2022, and it went viral instantly.

In the TikTok video, Kapoor recreates various colourful ensembles worn by thin white women. It has since racked up over 2.3 million likes, which inspired him to make it a series and share more of his “simple maximalism” wardrobe. “I think my content really resonates with people because they’ve never seen a man, let alone a plus-size man, dress like me,” reflects Kapoor. “It’s a very untouched market, and I’m trying my best to get it out there.”

True to his overachieving nature, Kapoor has grand plans for the future. Besides continuing to develop Posh Heat, he hopes to one day be invited to fashion week and collaborate with a designer on a size-inclusive capsule collection. “At the end of the day, I just wanna show that anything’s possible for someone like me,” he grins. “The industry puts boundaries on certain body types, but just wear what you want! Fashion is boundless.”

Here, Nikhil Kapoor shares a few of his favourite things.

Shirt dresses for women are fall fashion’s unsung heroes. Now, before you call us basic or boring, hear us out.

They’re the ultimate one-and-done item. Instead of worrying about what pants work with what shirt, all you need is a pair of shoes and a jacket, and you can run out the door. This brings us to another point: The shirt dress is as versatile as our fall schedules demand. From working from home (hello, no waistband) to going out for dinner (refer back to the no waistband comment), this magical piece of clothing can be worn through it all — even morning daycare drop-off.

Still need some convincing on the virtues of shirt dresses? The Fall 2023 runways speak for themselves. “It’s about real dressing: that Italian sophisticated woman who you know, that becomes global,” said creative director Kim Jones of his shirt dress scattered Fendi collection. Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons took a similar approach at Prada, where nurses’ uniforms served as the primary inspiration for their collared clothes. And Maria Grazia Chirui paid homage to Dior’s mid-century roots with lapelled bodices and full skirts.

The key to making this style look fresh is in the styling. Pair the classic silhouette with unexpected combinations à la the “wrong shoe theory.” Think chunky sneakers, dad socks and maybe even a bomber. Below, we’ve rounded up a few of our favourite shirt dresses for women.

If you subscribe to Walt Whitman’s view that the sea is a continual miracle, you aren’t alone. Poets, painters, philosophers, designers and overall romantics have been meditating on the mysteries of salt water for centuries, and we’re no closer to getting answers: Scientists estimate that to this day, 80 per cent of the ocean remains unexplored. So if it’s innately unknowable, then logic dictates that anything is possible, right? Sirens? Of course. Sea creatures? Definitely. Lost cities? We don’t see why not.

It’s this idea of whimsy and wonder that Tiffany & Co. explores in its Blue Book 2023 collection, Out of the Blue. Unveiled in New York City in April, the new designs dive deep into the archives of its legendary in-house designer Jean Schlumberger and reimagine what his marine masterpieces would look like today, in the era of Halle Bailey’s The Little Mermaid. With 71 pieces released this summer and 58 for the fall, the offering is a testament to Schlumberger’s legacy.

For those not in the know, Schlumberger changed the jewellery game. Initially finding fame working under Elsa Schiaparelli in the late ’30s and early ’40s, he was invited to join Tiffany & Co. as vice-president in 1956 at the age of 50. Under his tenure, the brand transformed, and Schlumberger’s legacy was defined by dynamic designs, colourful gemstones, unparalleled craftsmanship and his love of nature.

Photography courtesy of Tiffany & Co.

“When Nathalie Verdeille joined us [as chief artistic director of jewellery in 2021], she did a lot of homework on Schlumberger,” explains chief gemologist Victoria Reynolds. “When you look at his inspiration, it’s all about flora, fauna and the ocean.” Given that last year’s Blue Book was inspired by botanica, water was the natural next step. “We’re framing it as ‘He built the palace and we’re opening the windows,’” she continues. “We didn’t want to copy his work, but we felt we could add to it, make it more innovative and work with more gemstones.”

And they certainly did. Out of the Blue is a master class of artistry and technical wizardry. Earrings, rings, bracelets, brooches and necklaces have been transformed into seven marine-inspired themes — Shell, Coral, Jellyfish, Pisces, Starfish, Sea Star and Star Urchin — and feature exceedingly rare gemstones set in unexpected combinations. Example: A 21-carat black opal is encased in a cluster of diamonds, resembling a shell; the piece can be rearranged into four different designs.

The colour choices are also unexpected but purposefully so. “Because Blue Book 2023 was about the ocean, blues were clearly very important,” shares Reynolds. So to counter the cool tones, she and Verdeille added some warmth with unique gems like padparadscha sapphires. “Pink and orange sapphires are already very rare, so in order to find 100 padparadscha ones, I have to look at 1,000,” she adds.

Photography courtesy of Tiffany & Co.

The rarity of the untreated stones featured in Out of the Blue is a justified point of pride for the brand, as is the technical innovation. The Star Urchin necklace [above] especially marries the two as it features over 340 hand-carved chalcedony “spikes” that tremble thanks to unique spring mechanisms.

But the real crown jewel is the Jellyfish brooch. Inspired by Schlumberger’s La Méduse, the new design uses tanzanites, diamonds and cabochon moonstones to evoke the ethereal aesthetic of the invertebrate. Then, to make the tentacles appear as if they are dancing — a Schlumberger staple — artisans replicated the same hand engravings from La Méduse on the 18-karat yellow-gold spirals and added baguette sapphires for a little extra sparkle. “If you’d have gone to touch those tentacles and they didn’t move, you would’ve been disappointed,” laughs Reynolds.

Ultimately, she hopes that, like Whitman, the sea and Schlumberger inspire you. “I hope Out of the Blue brings joy to people,” Reynolds says. “This collection has a lot of love and passion behind it. I want you to feel that every stone was hand-picked for a reason and how integral Schlumberger’s legacy is to the brand. It’s unexpected, surprising and delightful, but it’s what makes the jewellery so good.”

Our apologies to the people who have made coffee their whole personality — turns out you were right (well, at least when it comes to fashion!). Latte dressing is the newest micro trend to hold the internet’s attention and it’s all about capturing that cozy cup feeling.

Like its beauty counterpart, latte makeup, latte dressing embraces the warmth and sophistication of the colour brown. Caramels, chocolates, espressos, as long as you can consume it, consider it an inspiration.

Besides taking over the streets during fashion week, the monochromatic look has recently been seen on Meghan Markle, Jennifer Lawrence, Hailey Bieber and more. So how do you rock latte dressing without looking like a coffee gone wrong? We’ve rounded up a few suggestions.

This article was originally published in July 2021 and has been updated.

Celine fans rejoice — former creative director Phoebe Philo’s long-awaited comeback is around the corner. More than two years after announcing that she’d be launching a clothing and accessories label under her own name, Philo’s eponymous (and mysterious) brand is set to be unveiled on October 30. And for Philophiles, the debut can’t come soon enough.

After parting ways with Celine in late 2017, Philo took a three-year hiatus prior to announcing her own label, which will have a minority backing from French luxury group LVMH (who also owns Celine).

“Being in my studio and making once again has been both exciting and incredibly fulfilling,” said Philo in a short statement shared with The Business of Fashion in 2021. “I am very much looking forward to being back in touch with my audience and people everywhere. To be independent, to govern and experiment on my own terms is hugely significant to me.”

At the time, Philo didn’t reveal when her new label would debut, but did mention that more details would be made available soon. That time came in July when a brief message on her website invited shoppers to register for a mailing list. Philo loyalists expected a September release, perhaps coinciding with Paris Fashion Week, yet when the Spring 2024 calendar was released, Philo’s name was nowhere to be found. And despite being a no-show, Philo was arguably the most talked about designer at PFW.

At long last, in the final days of Paris Fashion Week, Philo announced to her website subscribers that her namesake brand would be revealed on October 30. What will the clothes look like? Will there be some kind of presentation or just a drop on Philo’s website? Both mysteries, still.

With financial support from the most prominent luxury fashion corporation, LVMH no doubt sees the power and potential of a Phoebe Philo brand, and it’s no surprise why. Few designers have had a more significant impact on modern-day fashion: Philo turned Celine into a must-have brand during her tenure, introducing a streamlined wardrobe of effortless classics and refined sportswear.

A favourite among the fashion elite, Philo pioneered the minimalist design aesthetic that ruled the early 2010s and cancelled the overtly sexy looks that defined the previous decade. Philo subverted the male gaze in her collections and empowered the women wearing them. Yes, her new brand of sexy included slip dresses and short leather skirts, but it also included thick wool coats and turtlenecks — showing skin didn’t make the outfit alluring, the woman wearing it did.

Dearly missed by her fans and the fashion industry as a whole, Philo’s return to fashion has long been a topic of interest. Soon after the designer left Celine in late 2017, the Instagram account @oldceline started gaining traction, its content devoured by Philo’s devotees, known as the “Philophiles.” Since she was replaced by Hedi Slimane at Celine, the label has adopted a very different aesthetic. After a rocky debut of almost exclusively black party dresses, Slimane’s latest inspiration has been the brand’s bourgeois aesthetic of the ’70s. As Celine has ventured into new design territory, Philophiles have been waiting for a brand that would act as a worthy replacement. While some retailers gambled on other minimalist labels such as The Row and Jil Sander taking Celine’s place, no brand has had quite the same impact on Celine stans.

While it’s easy to wish for a Celine 2.0, Philo is not one to repeat herself. During her five years at Chloé in the early 2000s, her vision became synonymous with “boho chic.” The baby doll dresses, wooden wedges and banana print that stormed the Chloé runways were a far cry from the elevated classics she later presented when she arrived at Celine, but her time at the helm of both fashion houses makes one thing clear: Philo knows how to deliver for the present moment.

While we anxiously await the launch of the new Phoebe Philo brand, here’s a look back at some of the designer’s best fashion moments at Celine.

Andie J is a cowgirl at her core — minus the riding horses part. “I like petting and looking at them, but I’ve never loved riding,” she confesses somewhat sheepishly. Instead, the content creator (@andoej) prefers to pay homage to horses through her clothing: a collection of 70+ Western-inspired pieces that would make Dale Evans herself jealous. “Cowgirl is an attitude, really,” she says, quoting the star of 1940s Western musicals. “The cowgirl faces life head-on, lives by her own lights and makes no excuses.” And neither does Andie.

Born and raised in Calgary, she was always interested in fashion but didn’t realize it was a viable career until a couple of years into her PR degree at Mount Royal University. After a brief stint in Toronto as an intern at Joe Fresh, she returned home and joined TikTok on a whim. A year later, she started a video series about what she would wear to the front row of certain fashion shows, and she went viral. She decided to pursue TikTok full-time (while designing websites on the side) and now calls it her “accidental dream career.” “There aren’t a lot of jobs where your number one goal is to connect with people,” she explains. “I just love having that driving force every day.”

@andoej

the movie obsession except make it me in a western store lmao 🤠🐄 #cowboyboots #cowboybootcollection #cowboybootsoutfit #girlmath

♬ original sound – Walking L

Andie says she owes her style to her mother — the duo used to have 12-hour shopping marathons at thrift stores — but jokingly blames her father for her initial resistance to Westernwear. “I used to hate it when my dad would dress up in his cowboy boots, hat and shirt,” she laughs. “It wasn’t until I was in my late teens that I realized it was actually cool.”

Nearly a decade later, she now refers to her closet as “The Country Music Hall of Fame” because she has amassed so many Wild West wares, including 43 pairs of cowboy boots. “I’m urban, city, Hollywood, cowgirl,” Andie says, describing her style. “I’ve always been really into music, so I’ve definitely been influenced by Dolly Parton, Shania Twain, Cher and Harry Styles.”

As you can imagine, minimalism is not in Andie’s vocabulary. Colour, sequins, glitter and fringe abound as shiny lime-green boots mix with ornate leather jackets. Belts are big, and their buckles are even bigger. And cow print is considered a neutral. “It’s kind of like when you put on a matching pantsuit,” Andie reveals. “I get the same energy wearing a cowgirl outfit. I feel confident and strong.”

@andoej

my anxiety is high but i made it !!!! driving sucks!!!!! 🤠🤠 #stampede2023 #stampedefitcheck #stampedefashion

♬ original sound – Andie

Part of that confidence for Andie can also be attributed to Westernwear’s massive makeover in recent years. What was once an emblem of lone rangers and toxic masculinity has transformed into a flamboyant fashion that had a starring role in the Barbie movie. “The juxtaposition is very powerful to me,” shares Andie. “Westernwear was developed to be functional. It wasn’t seen as feminine until some really iconic women, like Dolly Parton, stepped in and added glitter to chaps.”

But, ultimately, the connection to her home keeps Andie coming back for more. “Growing up, a lot of people try to leave Calgary, including myself,” she begins. “But in the past four or five years, there’s been a real thrifting surge. It’s a very interesting scene, so wearing my pieces makes me feel proud of where I’m from.” Home on the range, indeed.

When I was 13, I told my parents I was going to work in the fashion industry — nay, I declared it. What inspired such an announcement, besides being an overly dramatic youngster? Grace Kelly in 1954’s Rear Window. More specifically, the black and white hourglass gown designed by legendary costume designer Edith Head.

It’s a quintessential 1950s design: the tight midnight black bodice, the mountainous layers of fluffy white tulle, the strand of pearls, and the vine embroidery that emphasizes Kelly’s waist. To quote an old Barbie-related meme: This was my Joker, and I’m not the only one still obsessed with the hourglass style.

Circle skirts and hourglass blazers were arguably the newest and freshest trend to hit the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 runways. It started last winter when Prada, Versace, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga and more made cinched torsos and midi-length full skirts mainstays in their Fall 2023 collections. The trend was then further cemented this past September, with Prada preserving the silhouette in its Spring 2024 show and Max Mara, Balmain and others joining the conversation. But what does the return of this restrictive silhouette say about the culture at large? That’s up for discussion.

For context, Christian Dior introduced the revolutionary silhouette — hourglass blazers paired with full skirts, coined the “New Look” — in 1947. Its over-the-top femininity and excess (one skirt used an estimated 20 yards of fabric) was a reaction to the austerity and practicality of the fashion during war times. The design was about decadence and hope for a post-war era; returning to the new normal.

The 2023 landscape obviously looks a little different but that’s not to say we aren’t experiencing echoes of the above. As Kimberly Wahl, professor of Fashioning Feminism at Toronto Metropolitan University, told FASHION, “we can’t rule out the current post-pandemic context.” She adds that enforced casual wear, economic concerns and overall conservatism have had a huge impact on the fashion industry. It was only a matter of time before the pendulum swung the other direction and lockdown loungewear was replaced with more tailored styles, like corsets, quiet luxury businesscore and hourglass blazers.

Canadian designer Matthew Gallagher clocks another reason for the resurgence: a craving for structure in both our lives and closets. “Our world is so chaotic that there is something about the control and refinement of the silhouette that feels safe,” he says, referencing his brand, House of Gallagher, whose designs are heavily influenced by the ’50s and ’60s. “There is a ‘perfection’ to the aesthetic that can make us feel like we have stability despite all the noise around us.”

That said, the 2023 revival of the hourglass silhouettes has some unfortunate “coincidences.” While the ’50s are more than seven decades behind us, there are some eerie echoes of the problematic culture. According to UN Women, gender disparities are worsening. Domestic violence, and overall violence towards women, has increased. Women’s reproductive rights have never been more in danger with the overturning of Roe v. Wade. And conservative politicians are encouraging a false nostalgia for a time when anyone who wasn’t a white, heterosexual, middle-class man was ostracized.

But Gallagher argues that this time around, the trend is different. Rather than being emblematic of enforced femininity, hourglass blazers and the 1950s silhouette are about reclaiming the narrative and finding freedom in a style that used to be literally and figuratively suffocating. “We can now wear the look without altering a woman’s body,” he reflects. “The clothes may look the same, but the wearer has a stronger voice.” It’s their choice if they want to adopt this style — society isn’t forcing it on them.

Wahl agrees, adding she doesn’t believe the shape is “inherently regressive,” however, in order for it to be progressive it needs to be inclusive to diverse body types and genders. “Clothing that ‘blooms’ allows the wearer to be expressive in ways that are not limited to finite (and standardized) notions of what a fashionable body should be. For me, this offers a proactive space for those who identify as women (as well an non-binary) to feel empowered by their clothing.”

Conclusion: Context matters. “I would say that now, more than ever, our understanding of what ‘feminism’ is through dress is as varied and complex as it ever was,” shares Wahl. “While some women view an expressive sexuality through their clothing as empowering, others continue to assert that mobility and comfort are the key to power. Ultimately, I do think many ‘feminists’ agree that the ultimate signifier of agency in fashion is the ability to choose how you dress to express your personal perspectives, aesthetics and even politics.”

If you feel powerful and confident wearing a black bodice and white tulle skirt à la Grace Kelly, go for it. If it makes you feel too much like a ’50s housewife, opt for something else instead. What matters is you are in control of your own narrative. But, as with most things in life, variety is vital. Layer your references to avoid doing a Sandy from Grease impression (pre-moto makeover). Mix in The Frankie Shop Colette hourglass blazer with a pair of straight-leg jeans. Wear a Prada circle skirt with a slouchy crewneck. And kitten heels go with everything.

Canadian scarf brand Life Liveth in Me was created by accident. Founder Yaw Tony was born in Ghana and raised in Toronto. While he has always loved to draw, instead of pursuing art, he went to school for architecture and kept his sketching on the sidelines. One pivotal day in 2014, a group from Germany’s Vitra Design Museum found Tony’s art online and asked if they could feature it in their latest exhibition. As it was a travelling installation, they suggested he print his pattern on canvas for easier transportation, and thus the idea behind Life Liveth in Me was born.

“The brand’s philosophy is that there’s a beautiful life living inside you,” Tony explains. “It’s about awakening the goodness within us so we can impact the world in a very meaningful way.” This translates into hypnotic silk scarves with hidden messages that would look as at home hanging in a gallery as they do around your neck.

Each colourful Life Liveth in Me piece has its own folkloric story that’s told through Adinkra symbols — a series of Ghanaian motifs with various spiritual connotations. Sometimes the designs are pretty literal, as seen on “Love Birds,” which features two feathery creatures perched on a branch. But more often than not, the scarves are more abstract and meditate on the meaning of life, like “A Pursuit of an Unknown 2Mor= (Tomorrow).” “I gravitate to stories that are universal and focus on human behaviour,” Tony shares. “I want to remind people of their inner potential, purpose and gifts.”

Here, Tony talks about finding inspiration in the every day and how growing up with Ghanaian music made him a lifelong storyteller.

Ghanaian music

“My father used to play a lot of traditional Ghanaian music in our house, and the singers were always telling stories, so I think subconsciously this had a big influence on me.”

Adinkra symbols

“Adinkra symbols represent the proverbs, philosophies and values of the Akans of Ghana. They’re so interesting because each icon is a full sentence, so you can take, say, five and have a complete paragraph.”

Everyday life

Photography by Carlyle Routh

“I get most of my inspiration from my surroundings. I can just bump into someone wearing a very funky pair of shoes and they will influence me that day.”

Salvador Dalí

“I admire how he tells stories: They look very surreal. My work uses the same style because I get stuck in these imaginary worlds and find it a bit difficult to come out of them.”

Hermès scarves

“I love Hermès scarves because they’re art-driven and the brand is not afraid to use colour. Also, I like that the animals in the designs look anthropomorphic, which is a style I use in my sketches.”

“The uniform for the layered life”— that’s the Veronica Beard motto. As two working moms, Veronica Miele Beard and Veronica Swanson Beard (the sister-in-law creative directors) recognize that women have a lot going on. From going to the office to cheering from the sidelines of a soccer game and everything in-between, your wardrobe has to be built for your life, and not the other way around. Here, the designer duo behind the American brand Veronica Beard chats about how a chance encounter at a wedding turned into a contemporary clothing company.

Welcome to Canada! What sparked the decision to open your first store in Toronto?

Veronica Miele Beard: “The Canadian market has been huge for us since the beginning — it’s jacket weather here all year round!”

Veronica Swanson Beard: “It’s been amazing since we opened the store in the spring! The success and welcome we’ve had here have been so nice.”

So, starting at the beginning, a chance encounter at a wedding in 2002 changed both of your lives. Did you meet each other or your husbands first?

VSB: “Husbands. We were seated at the same table. Veronica and Anson Beard were married, and I was sitting across from Anson’s brother, Jamie. Veronica and Anson were trying to set us up, and my now-husband was being super flirty. I was like, ‘There’s no way this is going anywhere — there can’t be two Veronica Beards!’ And then Jamie and I ended up getting married.”

Then where did the idea to start the brand Veronica Beard come from?

VSB: “There were years of bad ideas before the Dickey Jacket. We would get together at family gatherings and compare notes on the fashion industry. We both have an entrepreneurial spirit and a love of fashion, so it seemed natural. The Dickey and Dickey Jacket arose, and that was it!”

When you launched the Dickey Jacket in 2010, it quickly became a must-have item. Why do you think it struck a chord with so many people?

VMB: “It checked many boxes. We loved the idea of the dickie from menswear, but we realized that there wasn’t anything similar on the womenswear front. Our customers love a layered-blazer look but not the bulk of all the layers. The Dickey Jacket creates a polished look in seconds — and as women, we know we need all the extra time in the world.”

How do you balance being both in-laws and business partners?

VSB: “At this point, we have known each other for 22 years and been in business together for 13. I mean, we have the same name, share the same office and are basically joined at the hip.” [Laughs]

VMB: “We have to agree before we move forward. We might fight or disagree, but it’s got to work. There is no other option.”

VSB: “And a massive part of our success has been that there are two of us and we can off-load and share responsibilities. We have somebody to call and commiserate with about the fears or the failures and then celebrate the successes with. That’s the greatest thing in the world.”

Part of Veronica Beard’s DNA is believing in enduring personal style. Can you elaborate on that?

VSB: “I think it’s when you see a woman with a unique signature, like she always wears all black or has amazing silver hair. And it’s really about confidence. We always say that when you look good, you feel good — so when you’re wearing something that you feel great in, you walk into a room with that energy.”

So how do you keep the brand current while also honouring this motto?

VSB: “We always say that the best businesses are the ones that both change and stay the same because that’s how a brand maintains its DNA. For us, Veronica Beard delivers classics with a twist. You can wear our blue blazer today or 10 years from now — it’s a forever style.”

VMB: “If you were to witness a design meeting with us, you’d see that it’s not us sitting around going ‘This is the trend and we’re gonna set it.’ It’s more like ‘These are the trends that are coming, and this style is missing from the market.’ It’s also us going ‘Is it long enough so that when she hails a cab, there’s no skin showing?’ and ‘Are the butt pockets in a place where they make her ass look higher?’ You know what I mean?”
