How does rosemary oil for hair growth work?

Rosemary oil for hair growth is not a proven fix-all product, but some evidence has found it successful. “Studies show that rosemary oil can help micro-capillary perfusion, meaning it can support blood flow in the tiny capillaries where it’s applied,” explains Geeta Yadav, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Facet Dermatology in Toronto.

In other words, increasing the blood flow to your hair follicles can support healthier growth.

Rosemary oil also has an antioxidant characteristic that may protect hair from environmental aggressors, such as UV radiation and pollution. “Rosemary oil comes from the Rosmarinus officinalis plant, with potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects,” explains Monica Li, a Vancouver-based double board-certified dermatologist.

These anti-inflammatory components can help to foster a healthy scalp for hair growth (and keep symptoms like itchy scalp at bay).

Who can use rosemary oil?

This ingredient can be used on all hair types, whether your locks are thick or thin; colour-treated or natural. However, if you have sensitive skin, it might cause irritation, Li and Yadav warn.

To avoid a sore scalp, they advise patch testing a small area — like the wrist or behind the ears — before using it on your head. After two to three days of use, you’ll see if your skin tolerates it.

“There is no scientific data on the safety of rosemary oil on those who are pregnant or breastfeeding,” Li adds, noting that these individuals should avoid it.

How to use rosemary oil for hair growth at home

Good news: there are lots of ways to incorporate it into your routine. If you’re looking to avoid adding another step to your regimen, opt for a shampoo that uses the ingredient. And if you buy it in its purest form, be sure to mix it with a carrier oil like coconut, argon or avocado oil before applying.

Yadav suggests using about five drops mixed with at least one teaspoon of carrier oil.

“To get the best results, you should apply it directly to your scalp,” says Yadav. She advises putting it on after a shower and massaging it in for about 10 minutes. This part of the process is crucial because the massage will work to help promote blood circulation. “Regular scalp massage can also widen the hair follicles, which supports thicker hair.”

Rinsing is optional, but Li suggests doing so, as concentrated rosemary oil may irritate the scalp. To ensure you’re not rinsing the hard-working ingredients away, be sure you’ve left it in for at least 10-15 minutes. Most of all, before using any product, defer to the instructions on the packaging—every formula is unique.

How often should you use rosemary oil?

Consistency is key — especially at the beginning. “Ingredients supporting hair growth should be applied daily for best results, ideally twice a day,” says Yadav. “You could stretch it to every other day, especially after you start to see results, but the follicles need support to strengthen.”

Remember — if you don’t see results right away, that’s normal. “It takes at least five to six months of regular use of a rosemary oil-containing hair care product to see its effects,” says Li. “Be patient.”

The outfits may not slay

I love Cardi B‘s dedication to feathered frocks and Kylie Jenner’s rotation of form-fitting ’fits, but it could never be me. Every day, I’m hauling a computer bag instead of a dainty Sandy Liang purse. I rotate between lightweight ballet flats and durable Doc Martens, never once putting to use the vintage high-heeled boots I determinedly crammed into my suitcase. I’m not sporting Scandi-girl blowouts; my hair is routinely pulled back in a trustee rotation of stretchy headbands.

Deep down, as an editor, I know I do have a place here. But in an environment filled with bigwigs and glamorous nepo babies, it’s incredibly easy to feel insignificant. You have no choice but to wear it proudly! This brings me to my next point.

There are lists, lines and onlookers everywhere

Every now and again, you need to be humbled by the universe. And there’s nothing quite like the sobering sensation of walking into a show and seeing the surrounding street style photographers slowly lower their lenses and avert their eyes. Or the invisible (but very real) food chain ranking of being put in the “standing” section as opposed to having a seat at a fashion show.

More than once, I find myself reaching the front of the line, hoping to a higher power that I am in fact on the list. Each time I’m let through, I feel like I tricked the system.

Sometimes, before the shows start, there are hors d’oeuvres being offered. It might not be à la mode to indulge, but I don’t care. I am nothing if not a lover of little treats. Puffy braided breadsticks? Flavoured sparkling water? Don’t mind if I do!

The Anna Wintour effect is real

Somehow, seeing Anna Wintour throughout the week makes everything feel more momentous. I watch the infamous editor casually stroll into each venue — always sporting a flowy dress, a long trench and her signature perfect bob — and then slip out a back door as soon as the designer takes a bow.

IRL, I am stunned by the severe precision of her chin-length hair. “I heard she gets it trimmed every week so it always looks the exact same,” an editor tells me at the Proenza Schouler show. God, I love dramatic fashion lore.

Everyone is faking it till they make it

“Give us more!” photographers instruct an unnamed celebrity before the Coach show begins. The Upper East Side venue is luxurious, with a grand gilded staircase where said celeb is posing. He obeys, kicking up his legs and leaning his head back. My attention is briefly turned to the aforementioned Anna Wintour, who is walking up the other side of the stairs. I suddenly hear a thump, and turn back to see said celebrity has fallen down the steps (!) of this statement entryway. (Serving is dangerous work.)

To the crowd’s delight, he shakes it off and keeps posing. Wintour, now at the top of the spiral staircase, stops and turns to get a glimpse of this mishap. She smiles. This series of events, I realize, encapsulates the beauty of fashion week. You can make a fool of yourself in one moment, and go back to looking like you own the place the next. At New York Fashion Week 2024, it’s all in the mindset, honey.

There’s an art to approaching celebrities

A focus of my job here is trying to get famous people to talk to me. (Journalism!) And a big part of that is getting repeatedly rejected — or worse, being yelled at by an impossibly chic publicist. But just know, for every A-lister who says no, an enthusiastic It girl rendez-vous is right around the corner.

At the Michael Kors show, I see Katie Holmes walk in. She’s willowy and glowy and has kind eyes. I suddenly feel slightly inept in my stretchy slacks, but no matter. I start to ask her something and am swiftly shot down. “No questions,” a headset-wearing publicist politely says, ushering an apologetic-looking Holmes away. I guess we’ll never get the backstory on that look. Well played, Kate-o!

Then, I see the glamorous Gabrielle Union and ask her for her favourite fashion tip. “Not to take fashion tips,” she says, cool as a cucumber. Will I ever recover from posing such a dumb question? Watch this space. Blake Lively walks in, and everyone is clamouring for a glimpse of her. Wearing a giraffe print set, she looks just as stunning as you’d imagine.

Still riding that wave, I spot Rachel Zegler, who is a total delight and chats with me about her Valentine’s Day plans. I want to stop everything and ask her to hangout. But alas — duty calls!

Beware of dehydrated skin

At one high-profile presentation, I find my seat just before the show begins. While holding my phone up to videotape the models, I notice something truly horrendous. A cardinal sin to the ultra-dewy in-crowd of New York City fashionistas: dry hands!

Had I been so preoccupied with capturing content and squeezing on sanitizer that I completely neglected moisturizer? I can sense my seat-mates’ eyes on my shrivelled-looking paws — but there’s nothing I can do now. As soon as the show ends, I fish for the Vaseline on a Stick (nothing but the best) in my bag. Note to self: always hydrate your skin before entering a star-studded venue.

Appreciate the work that goes into it all

Amid all the adrenaline, it can be easy to forget the artistry at the root of the event. Earlier that week, I’d read about the steep expenses of being a designer in the city. It can reportedly cost up to $500,000 for one NYFW runway (and they’re often put on twice a year!). This comes up at one show when I’m seated next to two other Canadian editors. We begin to lament the loss of Toronto Fashion Week. It’s been almost 10 years since the fashion event was cancelled, due to lack of funding.

What does this loss say about the way we value fashion, or any creative industry, for that matter? Canadian-born success stories, like Tanya Taylor, have notably set up shop in NYC to make it in the cut-throat business. Moving through the week, this context makes me appreciate the intention of each show even more.

As media, I get backstage access for some presentations. I see how celebrity nail artist Gina Edwards crafts custom talons using Kiss press-ons for Prabal Gurung and Pat Bo. Behind the scenes at LaQuan Smith and Christian Siriano, I witness Unilever stylist Lacy Redway transform regular buns into gold-speckled updos and pencil-adorned creations. Even the smallest details have teams of professionals working to perfect them.

My takeaways

By the end of my time at New York Fashion Week 2024, I’ve attended 16 shows and backstages, and I am slightly disoriented. Poetically, the weather seems to be going rogue, too. “Advisory for your flight,” an ominous subject line from Air Canada pops up in my inbox the day before my departure. There’s a storm coming, the email teases, and your flight might be cancelled. At this point, I’m functioning on very little sleep and running out of socks. “Please, no,” I pray.

Luckily, it works out. As I settle into my seat on the scheduled plane late at night, I am struck with a feeling of lingering excitement. All in all, I am coming away from the week a little tougher — celebrity snubs will do that to you — a lot more inspired, and much less concerned about what others think.

But next time: double up on the moisturizer.

Headbands in all their varying forms have emerged as a red carpet trend — from Precious Lee and Emma Chamberlain at the Met Gala to Shay Mitchell’s doll-like look at the Barbie premiere.

One viral still in particular showed Rapp in a pair of high-waisted baggy pink pants and a sheer tie-dye corset top. It’s a stark departure from Rachel McAdams’s Regina George, who charmed and terrified the world with her low-slung miniskirts and skimpy baby tees.

Before even seeing the film, many declared that this is not Regina George. The internet’s consensus, to put it simply, was that the original queen bee would never approve of Reneé Rapp’s outfits. But I’d argue the opposite.

Because I care, I went to see this reimagination on opening night. And listen, I’m not here to say the movie is perfect. It’s not. As this Vulture review put it, the film’s main purpose is to “remind you that the original Mean Girls is fun.” It doesn’t exactly stand on its own, but it does usher in a new — dare I say iconic — era for Regina George. And that includes the outfits.

For starters, in this remake, the leader of North Shore High is gay. Reneé Rapp, who is queer herself, has been outspoken about her refreshed take on the infamous Mean Girl.

She delivers the “Get in loser!” line with unmistakably flirtatious undertones. More explicitly, she playfully shouts “Can a gay girl get an amen?” in “Not My Fault,” an original track for the movie. All things considered, of course her style should shift.

It’s long been suspected that the OG Regina George is secretly gay. Theories cite her obvious disinterest in boyfriend Aaron Samuels and her fixation on Janis Ian’s sexuality. Some have also pointed to her resolution in the final act, when she seems nicer and happier than ever after joining the Lacrosse team. (A nod at the historically queer-friendly environment of women’s sports, perchance?) With her take, Reneé Rapp simply confirms all of this.

McAdam’s Regina is subtly vicious, with a style that is deceivingly soft, girly and chock-full of pastels. In contrast, the “out” Regina George has an overall darker colour palette, she prefers pants, and this time, her meanness doesn’t hinge on the same hyper-femininity. She’s different, and so is her wardrobe.

Alongside the criticisms of her clothes, some have said she’s not scary enough. But she’s mean I tell you, mean! Mastering the art of high school bully intimidation in both a speaking voice and powerful ballad belt? That’s skill.

Not to mention, much of the backlash pertaining to the Regina George outfits was that they were “unflattering.” But it’s worth interrogating where that idea comes from, and why it’s most often said about women who are not a size zero.

While the new wardrobe might not strike die-hard fans as true to the OG Regina, it is true to this one. It’s no secret that Reneé Rapp is not a fan of skirts. So why would they make up the majority of her on-screen wardrobe? Isn’t the true key to Regina’s reign the fact that she feels good in what she wears?

This brings us to the fast-fashion accusations of it all. Watching Reneé Rapp command every scene, I felt her costumes looked right. From the button-down leather jacket to the elaborately feather-adorned Halloween dress, her ensembles weren’t serving Y2K designer, but she looked comfortable and confident.

Costume designer Tom Broecker told Elle that he in fact did source from labels like Miu Miu, The North Face, Converse, and The Frankie Shop. To those upset that she wasn’t adorned in all high-end labels, let us remember that this is not Euphoria. Regina is a popular girl at a regular high school, and her trendy-of-the-moment ‘fits make her performance more realistic. After all, even the original Regina George reportedly donned a designer dupe.

Unlike the original Regina (whom I adore), this iteration isn’t supposed to be ultra-girly. Some of her clothes are homages to the original (like the boatneck sweater she wears when hit by a bus), and some of them are entirely new.

Take her half-chain, half-pearl “R” necklace, which re-conceptualizes the dainty monogrammed accessory worn by McAdams in the original. In contrast, this hardened, chunkier version is meant to evoke a sense of androgyny, bringing in both masculine and feminine visuals.

We should all feel empowered to experiment with gender expression when it comes to getting dressed. Why can’t Regina George do it too?

TL;DR: the luxury house was in hot water after releasing two campaigns that were perceived as promoting child exploitation. At the time, the label was known for intentionally drumming up shock value, be it through simulated snow storms or eye-assaulting Croc stilettos. But this campaign, social media feeds agreed, went too far.

The internet-breaking cancellation came at a bad time for the beauty mogul, who had been sporting Balenciaga at nearly every red carpet event leading up until that point — including the 2021 Met Gala — and who had become the de facto face of the brand.

Since then, Balenciaga has been trying to repair its sullied reputation. At the top of 2023, creative director Demna pledged to abandon the gimmicks he was known for in favour of quality craftsmanship. This strategy seemed to change in recent months, however, with the brand releasing an endlessly meme-able towel skirt and partnering with luxury L.A. grocer Erewhon on exorbitant shopping totes. (The latter of which Kim K debuted at their Fall 2024 runway show.)

Fast forward to now when it seems Balenciaga is positioning itself to be back in the same spot it was pre-scandal, and Kim Kardashian is lending her hand. “For me, this long-standing relationship is built on mutual trust and a commitment to doing what’s right,” she continued in her statement. “I’m excited about this next chapter for the brand and to become their ambassador.”

Following the announcement, Kardashian appeared in the brand’s newly released Closet campaign, which took viewers inside her dressing room. Starring alongside other fashion tastemakers, including Nicola Peltz Beckham and Paloma Elsesser, Kim Kardashian is wholeheartedly embracing her status as a Balenciaga ambassador. But not everyone is sold.

“At the end of the day, Kim Kardashian, in my opinion, only cares about money in situations like this,” said Jasmine Kharazi (@jasminedarya), a fashion commentator on TikTok. “She truly will do anything for a check,” another person commented.

Say what you will about Balenciaga and its newest ambassador Kim Kardashian, but there’s no denying they both know how to garner attention. It seems these two are endgame, regardless of controversy.

The Moonlight flower, a plant native to the forests of Central America. True to its mystical name, the flower blooms but once a year at night, making it incredibly rare.

As such, it was an evening about relishing in the extraordinary, and fashion played an important part. The soirée saw a sea of dazzling style choices, from golden knee-high boots to lush leather separates. The best part? The satirical series tracks the weeks-long production of an HGTV show, starring aspiring eco-friendly developers Whitney Siegel (Stone) and her unsettlingly all-adoring husband Asher (Nathan Fielder). Is it a dry comedy, a slow-burn drama or a maniacal horror? The answer is yes.

To film their home-reno series, the moneyed millennial couple moves to the working-class city of Española, New Mexico. Whitney is passionate about her energy-efficient “passive” homes: ultra-modern properties with mirrored exteriors and beige minimalist decor. She is determined to transform this locale (ethically, she insists) into a hotspot for sustainable living, one tear-down at a time. We soon find out that her funds come from her parents, infamous landlords with questionable morals.

Tackling gentrification and power dynamics, the 10-episode series operates in its very own category of cringe, where it’s impossible to tell if anyone, and especially Whitney, is ever being genuine. When it comes to understanding this character in The Curse, the costumes worn by Emma Stone are extremely telling.

Whitney’s wares are a rotation of down-to-earth looks, comprising utilitarian jumpsuits, comfortable cardigans, and ever-so-slightly ill-fitted straight-leg jeans. Her subtly ombré-dyed hair cascades in uncomplicated waves and her practical accessories — tote bags and faded bucket hats — communicate low-maintenance living.

But there’s a discrepancy between Whitney’s camera-ready persona and her ambiguous motives. On-screen, she’s sterilely smiley, forcefully giggly and overly accommodating. It’s a performative facade that doesn’t end when the cameras stop rolling; it extends to almost every interaction she has. She is always molding herself to mirror what she thinks other people want from her, and this extends to her clothes.

Whitney presents herself as a selfless do-gooder with a dream; as someone who is not afraid to get down and dirty. At first glance, her granola style reflects this. She wears Birkenstocks, she rotates through unassuming T-shirts, and she rolls up the sleeves on her flowy button-ups. Her wardrobe is objectively unimposing and inoffensive (that is, depending on how you view the French tuck). But Whitney is desperately trying to convey an image of laid-back ease.

Thing is, these outfits — so basic and benign at first glance — are carefully curated to further the forced image of who she is. Take her relationship with her parents, who are known for imposing unsafe conditions on residents in their affordable housing units.

Whitney insists she wants no part in this, and is constantly working to publicly distance herself from their legacy. But she has no problem benefiting from it when she needs a quick loan of tens of thousands of dollars. (“Española is mine!” she screams at them during a covert rendez-vous.)

There’s a sense that Whitney is always pretending. This falseness emanates from her passive homes, which sound utopian on paper but don’t exactly work in practice. (Prospective buyers are routinely turned off that there’s no way to control the temperature.) And then there’s her marriage. She is in a constant cycle of manipulation with her spineless husband, wherein she oscillates between finding him amusingly charming and hating his guts when she thinks it will “work” for the show.

Worst of all, her performativity is painfully obvious when awkwardly interacting with her friend (?) Cara, an Indigenous artist who seems to merely tolerate Whitney. In all of their exchanges, Whitney is both vying for Cara’s approval while tokenizing her for cultural bonus points. In one conversation filmed for the show, Whitney shamelessly coaches Cara on what to say. (“My homes are so important as a piece of art, and you’re proud to have your work displayed inside,” she instructs Cara to repeat in her own words.)

Upon closer inspection, Whitney’s activist-adjacent outfits appear to be made by designer labels like Christy Dawn and Paul Smith. In one monumental episode, she dons a pair of colourful Collina Strada trousers — dubbed “her gentrification pants” by The Cut — that are festooned with workwear-inspired patches but are very much not intended for physical labour. It’s the perfect metaphor.

Through it all, her style is an extension of her out-of-place houses. These eco-conscious constructions are a result of her buying up the neighbourhood and flipping affordable properties into pricey mirrored structures. For as much good as they might do, they are still actively displacing the Española community. Underneath their cozy linen bedding and locally-sourced pottery, they represent something a lot more complicated. The same goes for Whitney.

Risen from TikTok’s black hole of micro-trends, the mob wife aesthetic is everything 2023 minimalism is not. It is flashy, garish, and brimming with designer logos. It welcomes heavy winged liner, nude lipstick, and dangerously long acrylic French tips. And, believe it or not, it’s here to help you fight the slog of winter ennui.

“It is our time to shine as girlies who love makeup, who love jewellery, who love faux fur…and who love to wear full glam,” says TikTok user Sarah Arcuri, an Italian American housewife who identifies as the “resident CEO” of the mob wife aesthetic. Neutrals, streamlined silhouettes and simple ballet flats might be “in,” but they can’t excite your senses like a mob wife outfit will.

Unlike the painstaking subtleties of quiet luxury, dressing like a mob wife is relatively easy. To start, all-black basics. (“If you look like you’re going to a funeral, you know you’re doing it right.”) Next, a fur jacket — preferably vintage — for that statement authoritative edge. Finally, over-accessorize with reckless abandon: pile on the gold jewellery, reach for your biggest Y2K sunnies, and grab a bag that is basically screaming a designer name.

The most crucial aspect of this equation, however, is the attitude. After all, embodying this crime-adjacent niche is about more than just fashion. Would a mob wife stress about her Instagram feed? Talk down to herself? Let others talk down to her? Hard no. A mob wife has bigger fish to fry.

While the clean girl frequents yoga classes, juices celery, and partakes in Dry January, the mob wife is happily messy. She’s a fan of the Olive Garden. She’ll indulge in martinis. She says what she’s thinking regardless of the consequences, because… do you know who she’s with?

Naturally, her clothes are an extension of this confidence. And it’s an unafraid ethos that has been permeating pop culture as of late.

Dua Lipa recently sported a gargantuan fuzzy coat atop a sheer fringe dress. Hailey Bieber has been known to traipse around in dark shades and floor-grazing furs. And most recently, the world was treated to peak mob wife behaviour by Jennifer Lawrence at the 2024 Golden Globes.

“If I don’t win, I’m leaving,” a deadpan J Law mouthed to the camera after she was announced as a nominee. Was she joking? You and I will never know — and that is the inscrutable magic of a true mafia spouse.

At an after-party hours later, Lawrence ditched her signature minimalist style in favour of a cheetah print topper. This garment, with its opulent velvet fabric and burnt orange collar, is the sartorial manifestation of “You talking’ to me?” And to that, we say, good for her.

The women who are wed to mafia members, as this deliciously silly trend suggests, deserve appreciation too. It’s no secret that the ladies of Scarface, Goodfellas and The Sopranos are icons in their own right. Their latex LBDs, tiger-print catsuits and heavily layered bangles live on as emblems of memorabilia. Though relegated to the cinematic sidelines, these wise-guy wives shine for their strength, style and individuality in a sea of hyper-masculinity.

So this winter, act as a mob wife would. Feed into your craving for authentic (?) Italian cuisine. Double down on your freakish obsession with true crime podcasts. Wear sunglasses indoors and take all your meetings in cars. Step out in your gaudiest get-up, even just once.

It may not be objectively chic or something the Olsen twins would wear. But it’s full of personality — and backbone. That’s amore.

Pike — who was nominated for Supporting Actress in the film — graced the red carpet in a fabulously morose look that mirrored her on-screen alter ego. Pulled from Dior’s 2019 couture collection, the ensemble comprised a black lace tea-length dress over a fishnet long-sleeve with floral appliqués. To top it off, she wore a voluminous matching heart-shaped fascinator.

The headpiece, by Philip Tracy, featured a theatrical bow (girl power?), which further added to the irony of this darkly elegant visual. And as it turns out, there’s an on-theme explanation for why she wore it.

Pike revealed that she had a skiing accident over the holidays, causing her face to be “entirely smashed up.” In true Elspeth fashion (imperfection = no), she rushed to cover the injury with a sartorial statement. If any look can make you feel curious, inspired and uneasy all at once, it’s this one.

Could she be headed to a funeral? Might she be on her way to a wedding? Is this just an average look for Tuesday dinner at Elspeth’s sprawling estate? All of these possibilities could be true — and that’s what makes Pike’s complex Saltburn character so alluring.

Elspeth is blissfully lacking in self-awareness and basic human empathy. In a movie filled with awful people, she truly shines for her unwavering unapologetic approach. “I’ve never wanted to know anything,” she reflects matter-of-factly at one point in the film, lounging outside her literal castle of a home in a breezy caftan. “She’d do anything for attention,” she says coldly of a friend who has died by suicide later in the film.

Her physical aversion to all that is not fun to look at speaks to the core of her beliefs. She is beautiful, and thus feels it is only fair that she surrounds herself with other equally pretty things.

Fittingly, Saltburn costume designer Sophie Canale gave Elspeth a vintage, bohemian wardrobe with flowy silhouettes and a relaxed flair. After all, she may be incredibly judgemental, but she won’t ever look uptight or stuffy.

On the contrary, she exudes peaceful ignorance as she meanders about the property’s gardens saying outrageous things with sobering seriousness. (“I was a lesbian for a while, you know…It was all a bit wet for me in the end, men are so lovely and dry.”)

Elspeth Catton is by no means a good person. She is however, shockingly shameless, intensely funny and undeniably dark. She may be morally murky, but my God, the woman can dress. And at the Golden Globes, this is exactly what Rosamund Pike delivered.

The 2024 New Year’s resolution season is here, an annually designated period to refresh one’s life and usher in some better habits. In theory, this is good. But when it comes to setting goals, I tend to bite off more than I can chew. That is why, in 2024, I am abandoning flashy, epic intentions in favour of something a lot less interesting: the low-stakes New Year’s resolution list.

These underwhelming tasks are so laughably achievable that labelling them as pillars of self-improvement feels silly. For instance, among my to-dos is the goal of reading a couple of pages of a book per night. (That’s just two to meet my quota; anything more is going above and beyond and will warrant extra self-congratulation. See how this works?)

Another big (to me) mission is cooking dinner once a week, a concept I view loosely and forgivingly. Anytime a stove is involved in the process of nourishing myself, I have achieved said goal (and yes, store-bought sauces absolutely count). Next, I aim to pick up the guitar that’s gathering dust in my room and pluck its strings for 30 minutes a week.

These goals are little. Unambitious. Some might even say pathetic! And that’s what makes them perfect. Listen, I’d love to implement sweeping lifestyle changes and stick to them. Reliably putting my phone away an hour before bed? Journaling every morning as the sun comes up? Eating three balanced meals a day? Glorious! But I know myself; I know where this idealized path leads.

I’ve found that trying to cram in a multitude of profound transformations all at once inevitably fails, setting off a domino-effect of feeling uninspired. I’m also learning that self-improvement is not linear, and no amount of brag-worthy betterments will save me from sometimes feeling lost. So, instead, I’m inching bit by bit, at the pace resembling a small snail, to make changes — nay, tweaks — that will serve me long-term.

I first used this strategy in 2023. I went to pilates just once a week, a task that first felt intimidating but is now a comforting highlight of my routine. (If you’re in Toronto or Vancouver, I can’t recommend Jaybird Studio enough.) I also resolved to care less about clothing rules, which is something I’m still working on but made progress with. (Who knew ditching pants for a day could be so enlightening?).

Instead of devoting all my energy to meeting life-altering quotas, my silly little goals allow me to feel accomplished, and leave more time to engage in frivolous pursuits; the best kind!

If you, too, feel overwhelmed by the looming New-Year-New-Me pressure, let your next 12 months be filled with menial objectives. By checking something basic off your list each day, you get the serotonin hit of a job well done — even if all you did was read three pages of a novel and sauté some onions.

The beauty here is that there is no big test; no monumental finish line that, if missed, will make all related efforts feel fruitless. Realistically, my journal will still sit on my bedside table unopened for days at a time. I will doomscroll, and regret it, and repeat. There are certainly more cobbled-together rat-snack dinners awaiting me in the future.

But as I take on the next 365 days, I am comfortably working towards being the person I want to be without forsaking who I am right now. Who knows, maybe this will be the year that I cook my way through a cookbook. Or, perhaps I will discover but one (1) great new recipe. The way I see things, that’s more than I had last year.

Sitting firmly in the realm of things nobody asked for but everyone will happily accept, the four-track project is a dedicated ode to his Grammy-nominated ballad, “I’m Just Ken.”

The cover image shows our favourite Mattel-made rascal in his finest form, staring at the camera with a dubious look in his eyes. He’s popping the collar of his denim vest, his eyebrow is arched just so and his blown-up bubble gum is on the verge of popping. He looks like he’s got something to say.

The EP — which was created in collaboration with Mark Ronson, Barbie’s soundtrack producer — opens with the aforementioned holiday tune, “I’m Just Ken (Merry Kristmas Barbie).” Accompanied by a brand new music video, this remix brings some seasonal jubilance to the famously introspective solo.

His echoey vocals feel almost otherwordly with the addition of church-like bells and festive strings. There’s a powerful chorus of background singers. At the very end, Ken’s mysteriously sexy speaking voice comes in. “Merry Christmas Barbie…Wherever you are,” he coos. Get this man a Grammy, stat!

But that’s not all. There’s “I’m Just Ken (In My Feelings Acoustic),” a mellow rendition for the sensitive girlies. We have “I’m Just Ken (Purple Disco Machine Remix),” an infectious electro-infused trip that will most likely put you in some kind of trance. And of course, it includes the classic “I’m Just Ken,” an irresistible serenade that put Kenny on the music map.

Through it all, it’s the Christmas special that feels particularly timeless. Is it basically the same song with a few seasonal-themed special touches? Yes. Have I had it playing on a non-stop loop since it was released? Also yes. After all, what better way to immortalize an artist’s body of work than by making it holiday-themed?

Such jingle-filled carols are the reason for the season. They’re designed to descend into our ears at the same time each year. They’re the only genre of music that is socially acceptable to play over and over again. As with sufficiently silly romcoms, they’re a major provider of Christmas cheer!

With Ken The EP out in the world, Ryan Gosling and Ken are now canon to holiday hullaballoo. And that’s a pretty big deal.

Thing is, writing a hit Christmas song is famously no small feat. Mariah Carey didn’t get where she is today by being just OK. Michael Bublé has cornered the market on a very specific kind of winter wonderland whimsy. Frank Sinatra may no longer be with us, but his verified TikTok account regularly goes viral sharing decades-old “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” performances.

You’ve likely seen the evidence. Taylor Swift and Beyoncé are ubiquitous. Everyone is eating “girl dinner” and doing “girl math.” The summer was spent witnessing a sea of hot-pink-clad Barbies dominating screens. Regardless of what you choose to believe, you can probably be grouped into some type of food-adjacent girl category — from the tomato to strawberry to vanilla variation.

On the internet, it seems that everyone is a girl once again. I, for one, am drunk with power in claiming this label for myself. “I’m just a girl!” is a common refrain I pull out when I wish not to deal with something, like doing the dishes or calling the electrician. It doesn’t have any tangible impact, but saying it feels cathartic.

Similar to many of my contemporaries, I am simply a 20-something-year-old teenager — and no, I will not be taking questions at this time. You see, this mindset extends far beyond the algorithm.

As we close out the year, an unequivocal embrace of girlish garments has firmly infiltrated the style zeitgeist. The most obvious indication? Bows. Associated with saccharine schoolgirl uniforms and wholesome dress-up-game rituals, neatly tied ribbons are one of the clearest codes of girlhood. And these days, they’re everywhere.

Look no further than the rise of New York City designer Sandy Liang, whose runways have long been a fête of fanciful ribbons. Establishing the bow as one of her house signatures, she constantly finds ways to reinvent it — most recently, her Spring 2024 show did so via belts and bags.

Beyond Liang, many 2023 catwalks saw a flurry of ribbon accoutrements. Simone Rocha introduced bows as eye makeup; bows were tied onto suits at Tanner Fletcher; supersized bows were presented as outfit focal points at legacy labels Balmain and Valentino.

Today, bows have become a not-so-secret dialect of internet speak; a way of signalling that one is reverting to their more sensitive, ingénue self. These clips are often labelled with moody messages (“This is me if you even care”) that capture the melancholic essence of growing up and feeling misunderstood. Sure, a feed full of bow-shaped bacon may be perplexing out of context — but at its core, this trend is about filling aspects of the everyday with visual callbacks to childhood.

Anyone who partook in the stereotypical delights of girlhood knows how they are commonly villainized. But public opinion operates in a cycle; liking Twilight was once embarrassingly low-brow, and now, it dominates a growing subculture of IYKYK coolness. The same goes for many a “girlie” emblem.

Of course, revelling in the beauty of girlhood is not without its critics. In a world adamantly afraid of aging, what does it mean to be openly obsessed with tokens of juvenescence? All things considered, it makes sense that some see 2023’s glorification of girlie style as infantilizing.

For me though, it’s a way of reconnecting with a past version of myself. I don’t remember when I “lost” the beauty of girlhood; maybe it was the first time I felt insecure about my appearance or harboured a heart-aching crush. The things is, growing out of girlhood is often rushed and frantic and propelled by an urgent yearning to be taken seriously.

In contrast, indulging in girlish emblems — affixing bows to everything, blasting Taylor Swift and unapologetically loving Barbie — is not so much about holding onto youth. It’s about rediscovering a version of me that I probably pushed away far too soon.

Or at least, that was an overarching sentiment for the better part of the year, when everyone was transported to Mattel’s plastic universe. Surrounding the release of Greta Gerwig’s live-action adaptation, Margot Robbie brought the make-believe land to life by embodying the titular toy.

We had 1959 swimsuit Barbie. We had 1984 ‘Day to Night’ Barbie. We had ‘60s-inspired haute couture Schiaparelli Barbie! It was a meaningful fashion fête for those of us who never grew out of loving dolls.

In the words of TikTok, try explaining the above image to a Victorian child. You simply couldn’t. Serving as a snapshot of how advanced (and uncanny) technology has become, the internet nearly imploded in March when a photo began circulating of Pope Francis in an extremely oversized puffer jacket.

Doctored by artificial intelligence, the life-like details and precise composition made it difficult to differentiate between real and fake. After all, the past year has seen fashion get inflated to new sizes — so why can’t the Pope take part? Real or not, you can’t deny that he looks effortlessly cool in a trend that is notoriously tough to pull off. #Swag.

Breastplates were big

These days, clothes are emulating breasts, and we have Rihanna to thank. At the Superbowl, the world-famous multi-hyphenate revealed she was expecting baby #2 in a Loewe armour-like bandeau. Ever since, the breastplate — in all its bold symbolism — has been a fixture of 2023 viral moments in celebrity style, sported by stars like Ellie Goulding, Lupita Nyong’o and Jennifer Lopez.

With a hardened shell and an inherently feminine silhouette, it’s imbued with bodily agency. If you squint, it looks just like a regular going-out top. If you look closely, it mimics one of the most sensitive parts of the human body. Breastplates are contentious, unique, and seeping with intrigue — and that’s what makes them so fitting for 2023.

The Margiela Tabi heist haunted us all

In August of this year, a new threat was unveiled for fashion girlies and Tinder users alike. One morning, New York City resident Alexis Dougé realized her Margiela Mary-Jane Tabis — the famed footwear featuring a cleft-toe design — had been stolen from her apartment by Josh, her dating app one-night-stand. Le gasp! What’s worse? It seemed to have been a premeditated hit job, with Josh later gifting the snatched-up boots to his girlfriend. (?!)

Naturally, this sent shock-waves through the very niche corners of the internet, before becoming one of the most memorable 2023 viral moments, restoring justice and allowing Dougé to recover the shoes. The Tabi Swiper, as he’s now known, will live on as a reminder that all’s fair in love and war — except taking hoof-like chaussures.

Mschf’s Big Red Boots broke the internet

Once the Mschf Big Red boots infiltrated fashion in February, nobody could hide. True to their name, these stompers are gigantic in size and incessantly vibrant in colour, making them visually unavoidable. As far as 2023 viral moments go, they may be the loudest yet. Of course, the cartoonish release prompted many questions, like “What?” and “Why?” and “Is this a joke?” It certainly was not. They retailed for $350 USD and sold out in minutes.

Gwyneth Paltrow served in court

Gwyneth Paltrow is an expert at looking like the most put-together person at any given moment. The Goop CEO is no stranger to controversy, and yet, her style is always that of someone with unwavering inner peace. Case in point: during her highly publicized Utah skiing lawsuit trial earlier this year, she made sure that justice was served in the style department.

Going to court is famously a stressful experience, but you wouldn’t be able to tell from Paltrow’s wealthy wardrobe, a rotation of buttery soft knits, oversized blazers and polished separates. Not only did it set off a new obsession with “courtcore,” but it added a layer of context to this year’s lavish lore of quiet luxury. After all, it really is a privilege to look this good all the time.

Taylor Swift invented football

Just kidding! (Sort of.) Thing is, for those of us who see sports as more of a distant concept than a day-to-day practice, Swift’s sudden interest was a turning point. After going public with her NFL-star boyfriend Travis Kelce, the singer has been sporting a series of sporty gal get-ups to watch her beau perform (err, play).

Seeing her crack open a cold one and enjoy football became a welcome entry point to game day — and the fashion that comes with it. Vintage sweater from Toronto-based boutique Ellie Mae? Swishy retro zip-ups? Nineties-era Chiefs-branded merch? Who knew sports could be so stylish?

Fashion pests prevailed

Fashion is famously a tough industry to break into. That is, unless you’re a bug. Indeed, two of this year’s biggest sartorial soirées were infiltrated by insects. First, there was the Met Gala, where a cockroach walked the red carpet to onlookers’ fearful delight.

Next, we had the beg bug infestation of Paris Fashion Week, where industry heavy-hitters were joined by a crop of critters. Does it make your skin crawl? Slightly. But is it also kinda funny? Of course. Perhaps it serves as a metaphor for breaking down barriers; a message that anyone (or thing) can weasel its way to the top of the fashion heap.

Hailey & Justin Bieber confidently clashed

What better way to wield the power of being a celebrity than by confusing the world with your clothes? This seems to be the motto of one of the most famous couples du jour. The Biebers are known for having polar opposite street styles, but in the summer, they took this reputation to new heights.

While promoting a new launch for Rhode, Hailey Bieber donned a bright red mini dress alongside Justin, who opted for an Adam Sandler-esque sweatsuit. Was he snubbing her big event? Was he staying lowkey to let her shine? Was this simply his way of declaring his love of loungewear? We may never know — but we’ll always have the memes.

Runway crashers reigned supreme

To close out the 2023 runway season, we were treated to a series of catwalk kerfuffles. There were crashers at big brands in nearly every prominent fashion city during the Spring 2024 shows: Coach in New York; Burberry in London; Gucci in Milan; and Hermès in Paris. Such chaotic disruptions at a time when fashion is at its most exclusive? Quelle horreure!

Animal-inspired fashion took off

There was an animalistic air to 2023 viral style moments. The year was off to a wild start when Schiaparelli debuted models with life-like heads on their ensembles designs at Paris Couture Week. Even though they were hand-crafted creations made of materials like foam and resin, some accused the brand of glorifying trophy hunting.

Mere months later, Doja Cat embodied a feline for the Met Gala. And to close off the year, Rita Ora leaned into dinosaur drama with a prosthetic spine at the Fashion Awards. Whether it’s glorifying using animals as accessories or ushering in a humane future away from fur, pet-inspired fashion is here — and it’s likely continuing into 2024. Brace for the cheetah print.

The Toronto-based not-for-profit charity exists to challenge perspectives through the promotion, production and exhibition of films made by and about LGBTQ+ people in 2023 and beyond. For over three decades, it has worked to build connections by celebrating queer films in Canada and around the world. In today’s fraught cultural landscape, fostering these relationships is more important than ever.

This is why, on December 7, the organization hosted Outbid, a silent auction and party to support its cause. Beyond filmmaker initiatives, youth engagement work and year-round screenings, Inside Out’s most paramount work comes from its annual film festivals. Held in Toronto and Ottawa, these events not only showcase movies but craft a tangible touchpoint of queer art in Canada.

Hosted by the impossibly glamorous drag queen Minhi Wang in a bedazzled purple ballgown, it was a festive affair with the goal of ensuring the future of LGBTQ+ films in 2023. Guests gathered in Toronto’s East Room — an airy restored warehouse tucked away in the Riverside neighbourhood — where they could sip signature cocktails, nibble on hors d’oeuvres and enjoy live entertainment while perusing silent auction offerings.

By bidding on items donated by local businesses and artists, attendees were helping Inside Out raise critical funds for its festival.“It’s hard to find the words after the last few years that we’ve had,” a speaker said before bidding began on Outbid’s centrepiece selection, a rare Salvador Dalí relic. “Being here together is really special for us… You’re here, you’re bidding, you’re spending money and investing in our next generation of queer filmmakers and queer creators.”

The fête was a much needed balm of warmth, support and safety in a time when so much feels precarious. Bringing together some of the most artistically inclined folks from around the city, the night was about giving back in style while celebrating the stories that bring us together.

Adored by both Blair Waldorf and Mr. Incredible, red tights can range from appropriately kitsch to downright silly to, in my opinion, incredibly chic. ICYMI, red is the colour of the season, and as a result, scarlet stockings are quickly becoming a hot-ticket item for accessorizing.

Look no further than the Spring 2023 runways. Proenza Schouler and Burberry presented sexy sheer pantyhose. Attico and Ferragamo (above) opted for opaque hosiery statements. Kylie Jenner, Dua Lipa, and Anya Taylor-Joy have all dipped their toes into the look (get it?). If my famous contemporaries can do it, I figured, surely I can too — so I spent a week in these babies.

Because I’m not working with a designer budget, I got my hands on a $10 pair from Amazon, which I found to be perfect in colour and comfort. Upon slipping them on, I was pleasantly surprised to love the way they made my legs look — so much so that I was tempted to throw on a bodysuit, ditch pants and bask in my cerise-bottom glory. Can you blame me?

Red, after all, is a powerful colour. It’s been said that painting your nails in this hue can attract male suitors. It’s the archetypal femme fatale lipstick of choice. It’s a quintessentially sultry shade associated with love, passion and anger. Traipsing around town with your legs dyed vermillion? That’s a statement whether you want it to be or not.

Where many of today’s trends can be a window into the psyche of irreverence, red tights are the antithesis of giving up. They are, for better or worse, the materialization of trying; of caring about something enough to give it a shot! And as with any effort, there are instances when they do not work out. Many times throughout my experiment, I found myself trying on approximately every single item in my closet, making for a very stressful getting-ready process (and a mess).

Still, day one started strong. My red tights outfit comprised a black dress I thrifted years ago, my favourite tall boots by Circus NY, and a cozy winter jacket (also thrifted). It was a mostly black ensemble with a palatable sliver of red, making for what I thought was an easy entry point into the style. But when I walked into an outdoorsy brand’s press preview to find an intimate crowd of earth tones, cargo pants and puffer jackets, my red tights began to feel more childish than sophisticated.

Later that night while grocery shopping (priorities), things went downhill when my friend remarked that my outfit matched the recognizable No Frills signage. (For U.S. readers, this is an affordable supermarket chain in Canada.) Not my chicest moment. I felt the urge to inform every confused-looking passerby that “This is actually really cool and trendy!” but I decided against it.

On day two, I won’t lie, I was feeling myself. Using that same black dress as a base, I threw on a cable-knit sweater and added a crimson hair ribbon for good measure. Sure, I felt a bit like a Christmas elf. But I decided to lean into that holiday cheer, and as I commuted to work listening to Mariah Carey’s Oh Santa, all my outfit decisions made sense.

That morning at the office, a co-worker I had never seen before said she loved my ensemble. Upon informing her of this article, she replied, “To give you my honest feedback, it makes me more inclined to try to take risks with my outfit.” I’d call that a win.

For days three and four, I experimented with red accents, either by pairing the tights with jeans for a peekaboo pop (and extra insulation) or by tying in the shade with other red accessories. At a holiday party with Pandora, I opted for a black blazer with a red shoe clip by Canadian brand Maguire. I wore a pair of gold Mary Janes, which I think offset the look well. This event was held at a swanky bar with pink lighting, so my red tights outfit felt magically in-place.

To end the week, I decided to build out my outfit from a colour that was not black (groundbreaking!). I wore a thrifted beige suede skirt along with my favourite tank from Canadian label &Or Collective.

I was quite pleased with the look, which I finished with a red headband and wore to a dinner party. At this point, my tights felt less like a gimmick and more like an extension of my festive self-expression.

My learnings throughout this process? Though intimidating, a red tights outfit can be what you want it to be. At their best, these tomato-colour stockings freshen up a “meh” ensemble. They can break up a neutral palette by adding a touch of vibrant visual interest, and they can turn up the dial on an already maximalist outfit.

There were times when I did feel a kinship with cartoon characters. I also could not shake the feeling that I was perpetually on my way to a holiday party. But overall, red tights have a kitschy magnetism that just makes getting dressed fun.

Do they pair seamlessly with any outfit? No. Will they become a regular part of my wardrobe rotation? Indeed they will. And if you, too, feel a growing curiosity about crimson lower limbs, I say follow that intrusive thought. It just may give you a new outlook on fashion.

ICYMI: After last year’s viral scandal found the brand accused of promoting child pornography, creative director Demna pledged to move away from gimmicks and focus instead on craftsmanship. “It’s a serious job, you know, to make clothes. It’s not about creating image or buzz or any of those things,” he told Vogue in February 2023. This is why it raised eyebrows that his latest collection was rooted in the most unabashed form of clickbait-y buzz: celebrity culture.

A self-proclaimed ode to L.A., the Fall 2024 show took place in a sunny, mansion-filled suburban neighbourhood. The residential road-turned-runway was lined with quintessentially Californian palm trees, framing the Hollywood sign as a picturesque backdrop. To mark the occasion, Balenciaga partnered with Erewhon — the viral health-food grocer that sells $20 USD smoothies — on a specialty drink, branded aprons and luxury shopping totes. Through 77 looks, the collection crafted a wardrobe that could take its (very wealthy) wearer from pilates to premieres.

Models stomped in cartoonishly oversized sneakers and UGG-inspired boots, gripping coffee cups, water bottles and Balenciaga-branded Erewhon bags. Yoga pants and skimpy velour Juicy Couture-esque tracksuits paid homage to Y2K It girls, while trash bag gowns and hotel slippers were reminiscent of the bewildering ensembles Julia Fox might wear today.

Jackets with integrated scarves, hooded dresses and face-obstructing sunglasses served as classic symbols of overexposed celebs using clothes to conceal their identities. To top it off, many models walked with iPhones glued to their cheeks, presumably too preoccupied to care that they were gracing a high-fashion runway. The impractical proportions and outwardly aloof attitudes seemingly positioned celebrities as the butt of the joke. But all the while, this very demographic was eagerly looking on.

Sitting front and centre was Kim Kardashian, a longtime ambassador for the brand and arguably the most famous figure in Hollywood. Wearing a pair of lace-adorned pant-a-boots (pants combined with boots, that is), she posed for pictures flaunting a branded Erewhon bag with flowers peaking out, for a fresh-from-the-market visual. (That was, of course, deliberately planned.)

Other A-list attendees included Kendall Jenner, Nicole Kidman, Selma Hayek, Tracee Ellis Ross, Eva Longoria, and Cardi B, who doubled down on her support for the brand by walking the show. Celebrities, clearly, were synonymous with the collection, making the see-and-be-seen performativity of Los Angeles culture come to life.

“Often people perceive my work as ironic — actually it’s the opposite,” Demna told reporters after the show, according to WWD. “I was showing my love to the influence that I got from this city, it’s my favourite city in the world,” he continued, citing his appreciation for Hollywood music and movies. To his point, the show — in all its intentional ridiculousness — was a pretty accurate reflection of Hollywood status symbols.

Take Erewhon. This year alone, the cult-like supermarket rose to viral prominence as an emblem of anti-irony, with skeptics flocking to the store and rolling their eyes, but purchasing exorbitant smoothies just the same. Or consider how the models’ theatrical iPhone conversations speak to a real-world renaissance of staged paparazzi photo ops. Addison Rae and Julia Fox are among those whose curated candid poses and outrageous errand outfits seem intended to be seen.

Not to mention the cultural phenomena blurring the line between real and fake. AI is firmly integrated into daily life. Fashion spaces seem to have hit peak dupe. And as an increasingly online culture, we’re continually coming to terms with the fact that authenticity on the internet doesn’t really exist. What, then, does that say about real life?

Despite its goal of focusing on pared-down craftsmanship, Balenciaga’s Fall 2024 show seemed almost intentionally void of down-to-earth visuals. Using luxury branded coffee cups and flashy athleisure, it poked fun at the contradiction of a culture that is both obsessed with inner wellness and painstaking physical perfection.

It’s gimmicks like these that made Demna’s Balenciaga the hottest brand of 2021. He had models trudging through simulated snow storms as a nod to the climate crisis. He took over the New York Stock Exchange to muse on corporate greed. But this show, taking place in the epicentre of showbiz with nearly every A-lister in attendance, brings a meta element to its satirical superficiality.

In some ways, Balenciaga — in all its meme-making mysteriousness — is a microcosm of the Hollywood beast. Perhaps this crossover is the most authentic move it could make.
