ICYMI,  the Yeehaw Agenda is back and better than ever. After a short detour into #MobWifeWinter, cowboy chic is the moment. Model Bella Hadid hard-launched her IRL cowboy boyfriend, Kacey Musgraves is officially returning to her country roots with new music, and on Super Bowl Sunday, Beyoncé announced her next album Renaissance Act II, releasing two new country songs to herald this new era in her music career.

We shouldn’t be too surprised at this latest venture for Queen Bey. Fans of the singer have long been anticipating that the icon, who grew up in Texas, would someday return to her country roots with an album. Beyoncé has made nods to the genre in the past, releasing “Daddy Lessons” off her 2016 album Lemonade (and performing with The Chicks at the Country Music Awards the same year).

In 2022, the mogul leaned into her cowboy roots with her Ivy Park x Adidas campaign, celebrating Black cowboys and cowgirls. And even her Renaissance album and tour, which largely drew inspiration from Black dance music, included a nod to country style, with the singer donning disco cowboy hats and performing atop a horse onstage. As Time writer Taylor Crumpton noted in a recent article about her upcoming album, Beyoncé has always been country. The rest of the world is just catching up.

And, because this is Beyoncé, who never does anything half-assed, her country aesthetic is infiltrating not just her sound, but her wardrobe as well. Since the beginning of February, the singer has been donning cowboy hats, boots, and bolo ties, at first a hint (the singer loves a good Easter egg) and then confirmation that she’s more than just a little bit country.

Shortly after the announcement of her upcoming album, Beyoncé popped up at the 58th Super Bowl sporting an inarguably Texan look: A custom Dolce & Gabbana minidress with thigh-high boots, a turquoise bolo tie, and teased hair. The singer’s manicure even got in on the theme, with nail artist Miho Okawara giving the star a french tip featuring turquoise gemstones typically associated with western wear

On February 13, the singer made a New York Fashion Week appearance at Luar’s Fall 2024 show. While Bey was there to support her nephew’s modelling debut, all eyes were on the singer who donned a silver suit dress from Gaurav Gupta with matching embellished thigh-high boots, an iridescent Ana briefcase bag from Luar’s collection, and an oversized cowboy hat.

And on Valentine’s Day, Ms. Carter blessed us all with yet another sexy cowboy look, rocking a Dolce & Gabbana point d’esprit tulle gown with boning, a tulle veil and gloves, and a garter belt. And, of course, the singer wore a black cowboy hat.

Unlike the attire at your local rodeo, Beyoncé’s yeehaw aesthetic clearly has a formula: A minidress + thigh-high boots + lots of embellishment. It’s not only cute, but also easy to emulate — whether you have a designer or Amazon budget. Below, find some of the best picks for channeling your inner Beyoncé-approved cowgirl.

Turquoise ring

If there’s one thing that every cowboy-chic look needs, it’s turquoise. Turquoise anything and everything. Jewellery is a great place to start when it comes to incorporating this western-beloved stone into your look; pair a bunch of stackable rings with some necklaces or a bolo tie, and you’re good to go.

Shop Now

 Statement minidress

Like Beyoncé, we love a minidress. Versatile and wearable through all four seasons, the western wear trend means it’s the perfect opportunity to pull out old minidresses you have tucked away in your closet and repurpose them. The only criteria? That you feel fabulous in it.

Shop Now

Western shirt

For the days when you just want to throw on jeans and boots, a classic western shirt is a fab option. While this look may be less Beyoncé and more Bella Hadid off-duty, one thing that’s for sure is it’s cowboy as heck.

Shop Now

Cowgirl-approved belt

We love the power of a well-placed accessory, and when it comes to the western aesthetic, a belt is the best way to go. Amazon has affordable and super cute options for those who want to dip their toes into the trend without breaking the bank. (We don’t *all* have Beyoncé money, unfortunately.)

Shop Now

Cowboy boots

Arguably the most important part of any yeehaw-chic outfit: the boots. Cowboy boots have evolved within the world of fashion, and they can be as pared-down — or as chunky — as you want them to be. We’d recommend a sleek black pair with minimal silver hardware. Easy to wear and super versatile. Plus, they’ll stand the test of time *and* the yeehaw trend.

Shop Now

Cowboy hat

As much as we’d love to don an Orville Peck-style fringed cowboy hat or one bedazzled to the heavens, realistically it’s probably not what we’re going to turn to for the day-to-day or when planning a ’fit for drinks with your besties. In that case, it’s probably best to go with a hat that’s a statement, but won’t wear you. Go for something well-made and versatile, so you can pair it with jeans or a statement mini.

This article was originally published on November 9, 2023 and has been updated.

If the first Monday of May is basically your Super Bowl, we have some very exciting news for you. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute announced the theme of the Met Gala 2024: “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”

Naturally, social media immediately began speculating about what exactly this seemingly vague theme could represent — and if attendees will actually stick to the theme. Contrary to some people’s interpretations of the title, the 2024 gala isn’t about the classic Disney fairytale or Beyoncé’s “Cozy” Renaissance Tour costume.

So what does the “Sleeping Beauties” theme mean? Here are all the details on the Met Gala 2024 so far.

What is the Met Gala 2024 theme?

As always, the Met Gala will be a celebration of the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, which acts as the foundation for the fashion event’s dress code.

According to Vogue, approximately 250 pieces spanning over a 400-year history — including at least 15 archival items deemed too fragile ever to be worn again — will be on display during the exhibit’s run in New York City from May 10 to September 2, 2024. These exceptionally rare garments are the “sleeping beauties” of the Costume Institute’s collection.

With a focus on sustainability, the exhibit will be categorized into three zones: land, sea, and sky. Each of these will include garments comprised of materials that can be traced back to their respective category, with the aim of highlighting the relationship between fashion and the environment.

One example of the kinds of designs that the exhibit will showcase is the iconic 2011 Alexander McQueen butterfly dress which was part of former creative director Sarah Burton’s first collection for the fashion house. The hourglass dress is fully embellished with meticulously crafted artificial butterflies and is said to represent the promise of “transformative renewal.” It’s an exceptional piece that has rarely been worn beyond the runway, aside from when Elizabeth Banks donned it for her portrayal of the fashion-forward Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games.

The collection will also consist of original pieces from designers such as Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent and Hubert de Givenchy — whose work will surely act as inspiration for the looks we’re bound to see at the annual gala.

On the importance of this year’s exhibit, Andrew Bolton, head curator of The Costume Institute, said, “Fashion is one of the most emotional artistic forms because of its connection to the body. It is imbued with memory and emotions, and we relate to it very much via our senses. One thing I hope this show will activate is that sensorial appreciation of fashion.”

When is the 2024 Met Gala?

The 2024 Met Gala will fall on Monday, May 6. As usual, it will be held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, with its star-studded red carpet taking place on the museum’s iconic front steps.

Who is attending the 2024 Met Gala?

The exclusive event’s guest list is never revealed before the gala, but we expect to see many familiar celebrity faces on next year’s red carpet. Several members of the Kardashian family typically attend the big night and fan favourites like Rihanna, Zendaya and Blake Lively often grace the museum’s steps as well.

In the months leading up to the big night, more information about who’s attending will likely be revealed.

Who are the 2024 Met Gala co-chairs?

On February 15, Vogue announced that Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez and Zendaya would form the official host committee along with Anna Wintour. Meanwhile, honorary chairs for the event are Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew. As Vogue notes, the co-chairs are a mix of longtime Met Gala guests (like J.Lo, who has attended a whopping 13 times) and first-timers (like Hemsworth, who has never been to the fashion event), along with Bad Bunny and Zendaya who have walked the Met Gala steps three and five times respectively.

What were past Met Gala themes?

The 2023 Met Gala was held in honour of late designer Karl Lagerfeld with the theme “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” Despite Lagerfeld’s controversial legacy, looks from the evening’s gala celebrated his decades of work at iconic fashion houses including Chanel, Fendi and Chloé.

Standouts from last year’s event included Dua Lipa, co-chair of the 2023 gala, who wore an elegant vintage Chanel tweed ballgown famously first worn by Claudia Schiffer on the runway in 1992. In addition to the variety of throwback Chanel and Chloé looks that graced the gala’s carpet, some stars opted for a more literal interpretation of Lagerfeld’s legacy. This included Doja Cat’s fully feline-inspired ensemble, which was meant to represent Lagerfeld’s beloved pet, Choupette.

The theme of the 2022 Met Gala was “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” which provided lots of “gilded glamour,” star-studded opulence.

Fashion fans will surely remember Kim Kardashian borrowing Marilyn Monroe’s famous “Happy Birthday Mr. President” dress for the evening and Blake Lively, who wore a transformative Statue of Liberty-inspired gown.

Between the years of history the annual gala holds and the exciting nature of this year’s theme, we’re sure that the 2023 Met Gala will be another big night for the fashion industry — and we’ll be keeping up with all the details until the first Monday in May 2024.

It’s Zendaya’s world and we’re all just living in it. And nowhere has that been more clear than on the red carpet. With the help of her longtime stylist Law Roach, Zendaya has become a fashion icon, often donning up-and-coming designers, and rocking silhouettes that few dare to try. But she always, always pulls them off. And the Zendaya Dune red carpet outfits we’re seeing on the press tour for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two that’s currently underway is no exception.

With a handful of looks under her belt already, it’s clear that the key is method dressing, with Z wearing outfits that could not only be straight out of Arrakis (the fictional desert planet on which the movie is set), but also emulate the look and feel of the post-apocalyptic planet itself. And to say we love it would be the understatement of the year.

Kicking off the tour in Mexico City on February 5, Zendaya stepped out in an asymmetrical look from emerging British designer Torishéju Dumi. A custom ensemble, based on the “Fire on the Mountain” look from the designer’s Spring 2024 collection, the two-piece set, in greys, black, navy and a vibrant red, seemed to be a direct nod to her character Chani and the Fremen she’s proudly a part of.

Photography by Getty Images

Fans of the film will know that the Fremen — the people indigenous to the planet of Arrakis — have a very specific aesthetic to them, wearing Stillsuits as a sort of armour that protects them from the elements. While Zendaya isn’t walking the Dune: Part Two red carpet in a literal recreation of the frankly very heavy looking Stillsuit, Dumi’s design gives the vibe of an updated Stillsuit, with the intricate wrapping, texture and padding mirroring that of a desert-friendly suit of armour. (It’s also low-key giving Sandworm vibes?! Sandworm, but make it fashion, that is.)

Just a day later, Zendaya walked the red carpet once again, this time in a structured brown wool ensemble from Bottega Veneta. While not a direct nod to her character in the structure or texture (we have a feeling wool would do terribly in the heat of Arrakis), it’s the hue of this custom look, iterated in an deep brown, that feels like a callback to the earth and sand that the fictional planet is so well-known for.

Photography by Getty Images

The Euphoria star wore two striking looks back to back on February 12 while promoting the film in Paris, France. The first, a futuristic white dress from Alaïa that looked a single piece of lush white fabric wrapping around her like a snake for a daytime photo call (above) and the second, a custom two-piece Louis Vuitton set comprised of a 3D rose jacquard sleeveless cropped hoodie with a matching pleated full skirt for the film’s Paris premiere (below).

The star took Valentine’s Day by storm in a layered maroon suit by Roksanda to attend a London photo call on February 14. Paired with a super long braid, the overall look was giving Arrakis royalty.

Then, most recently, Zendaya pulled out the mic drop of all Dune: Part Two outfits — an archival Mugler look from 1995 worn to the film’s world premiere in London on February that could be described as “robot chic.” Styled by Law Roach (who else?) in the silver cut-out catsuit, Zendaya looked like she travelled back from the future.

This type of thematic dressing may not feel like a big deal, but it kind of is. At its core, method dressing is when actors take aspects of a film — say, the plot, scenery, or characters — and translate them onto the red carpet. As FASHION writer Natalie Michie wrote in a May 2023 article about method dressing: “Simply put, it’s sartorial storytelling at its finest.”

In many ways, this type of dressing acts as further promo for the project that actors are walking the carpet for, but as Michie notes, it also acts as a high fashion and non-cheesy way to mark distinct eras in a celebrity’s career; creating standout sartorial moments fans can easily recall.

We’ve seen this tactic before. From Elle Fanning and Angelina Jolie’s promotion for Maleficent and Jenna Ortega’s commitment to black after her role in Netflix’s Wednesday, to Halle Bailey’s frothy, sea-like confections on the 2023 press tour for The Little Mermaid. And, do we even have to mention Margot Robbie and Barbie?

But probably one of the most identifiable was 2018’s A Simple Favor press tour, when lead Blake Lively leaned into the idea of method dressing hard, not only wiping her entire Instagram feed in anticipation of the press tour, but by promoting the movie wearing a parade of tailored men’s suits — and staple of her character Emily in the film.

A post shared by A Simple Favor (@asimplefavor)

The trend isn’t anything new for Zendaya and former FASHION cover star Roach, too, who have utilized the way of dressing many times throughout her career; most recently on the press tour for 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. Zendaya wore a custom Valentino gown with spiderweb embroidery and a superhero mask to the film’s premiere — to much acclaim.

Fashion has always been a way to have conversations beyond just clothes, and we love that Zendaya is using her time on the red carpet to have fun with her style and pay homage to her Dune character. Something tells us this is going to be an A+ press tour.

BEING BILLY

Against all odds, Billy Porter is a magnificent couture creation of his own making — one that has conquered the worlds of music, acting and fashion.

WORDS BY BERNADETTE MORRA

Billy Porter is a hugger. But I don’t realize this at first. He arrives at the FASHION cover shoot in a studio near New York’s Hudson Yards serving feisty realness like only Porter can. He is animated and emphatic as he bellows into his cellphone dealing with some issues around his divorce. In fact, he is so fired up that I can hear him coming from way down the hall. But when he finishes the call, he takes a deep breath and centres himself. And after that, there are cheery greetings and hugs all around — for me, for senior creative director George Antonopoulos, for the photographer, for the videographer and even for the fashion assistants. I get the feeling that if a cleaner were to come in to empty the trash bins, they would receive a hug, too.

Top, $20,595, pants, $19,950, and necklace (bottom), $970, Gucci. Boots, $295, Syro. Necklace (top), $550, and ring, $375, Dean Davidson.

Porter marches over to the makeup chair, where his beloved glam team is waiting. Makeup artist La Sonya Gunter has been working with Porter since 2013, when he was headlining the Broadway hit Kinky Boots, for which he won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. “You may see us bicker because she’s like my sister,” he tells me, waving his hand at Gunter. “From the first day,” she drawls. Later, his real half-sister MaryMartha Ford (nicknamed “M&M”), who works as one of his managers, drops by. It’s clear that Porter surrounds himself with a fun but selective mix of biological and chosen family. At one point, hairstylist Cheryl Bergamy-Rosa and Porter give me a lesson on “doodoo” or “dookie” braids — so called because they are the thickness of poop. “That’s an old-school southern term — we are lettin’ you in, woman!” Porter howls with a throaty laugh.

Letting people in seems to come naturally to the extroverted Porter, though in his 2021 memoir, Unprotected, he admits to erecting emotional walls to keep people out. And with good reason. His childhood was challenging, to say the least. At age five, he was sent to a doctor in an attempt to “fix” his love of girlie clothes and skipping rope. He was bullied and beaten (even on his first day of school), twice landing him in hospital. His stepfather sexually abused him from ages seven to 12, a violation that is even more heinous considering how he manipulated Porter into viewing him as a father figure and a source of comfort. Singing became an outlet, then a job, then a career. Things got off to a great start when he won Star Search, and US$100,000, in 1992 at age 22. But this is a world in which talent isn’t always enough. Porter has been told he sings too high and speaks too white. He’s been pigeonholed into playing Black stereotypes and passed over for being “too flamboyant.” But along the way, he learned to stand up for himself and was always certain of his talent. If you haven’t seen Porter’s confidence on display, Google his impromptu rendition of “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” at the 2019 Tony Awards.

Kinky Boots arrived at a point when he was bankrupt and homeless and sleeping on a patron’s couch. Even so, he took a chance and spoke up to convince the producers that his character should be gay and not a straight cross-dressing boxer, as originally written. They agreed. It was the first time he would see himself — a gay Black man playing a gay Black man — on Broadway.

I don’t move through the world ultra-masculine. I don’t move through the world ultra-feminine. I’m just there.

The show was a hit, but not without backlash. After a performance during the 2013 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Kinky Boots message of love and tolerance was attacked by right wingers. “I find it really odd that what I’m doing over here in my own life triggers you so much over there that you feel the need to beat me, hate me, shame me, take my rights away,” he says sharply. “Just leave me alone. Just leave us alone. Who am I hurting by expressing myself in this fabulous way? Nobody.”

More than 10 years later, Porter, at age 54, is pushing back harder than ever against hate— especially the type that comes from within. He is an outspoken role model for self-acceptance, something that is reflected in every aspect of his work. “When you are connected spiritually to all the things you embody, that’s where the healing lies,” he believes. Healing is something he talks about a lot. Of the 12 songs on Porter’s album Black Mona Lisa, released last November, almost all touch on his (sometimes rocky) road to overcoming shame, including his 2021 decision to come out as HIV positive after 14 years. His role as the ballroom emcee Pray Tell on Pose, a series set during the AIDS crisis in ’80s/’90s New York, helped with the emotional fallout from that trauma. “I lost more people by the age of 21 than my grandmother had at age 85,” Porter laments. “I used to always wonder ‘Why did I stay alive?’ Then I got that job and I’m like, ‘Oh, I survived to tell the story.’” He made history in 2019, when he became the first openly gay Black man to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. His rousing speech proclaimed “The category is love, y’all!!!” and he quoted author and civil rights activist James Baldwin: “‘It took many years of vomiting up all the filth I’d been taught about myself, and half-believed, before I was able to walk on the earth like I had a right to be here.’ I have the right. You have the right. We all have the right.”

Unfortunately, not everyone agrees. A gay man in a dress is somehow perceived as a threat, especially to children, while a straight man in a dress — be it Robin Williams as Mrs. Doubtfire or Dustin Hoffman as Dorothy Michaels in Tootsie — is considered entertaining. Whether a predator is wearing a dress or not while engaged in sexual misconduct has absolutely nothing to do with it, Porter writes in his memoir. And no one knows that better than him. Furthermore, he questions why dresses are seen as masculine in certain contexts but not in others. “I was watching a fashion show by this African designer, and every single one of those men was in traditional African dress, which is a dress,” he points out. “So it’s weird to me that I get attacked for just expressing myself that way. Preachers wear robes. Jesus wore a robe. That’s a dress, y’all. So back up and leave me alone.”

Porter bursts into a few bars of song, something he does throughout the day. Maybe it’s a way of releasing tension. Like many artists, Porter seems thoroughly guided by a combination of intuition and angst. He moves with abandon in front of the camera, alternating sudden spins with balletic stances and graceful arm gestures. But he is specific about how he wants his hair and beard to look. “I have a very feminine face and a high, raspy voice, so it doesn’t take much for me to be misgendered,” he says. “If the hair looks feminine, then people start calling me ‘ma’am.’ That’s not a problem. But I want rock ’n’ roll edgy, not feminine, and there’s a fine line. It’s non-binary, really. I think if I were younger, I would probably identify as non-binary. Because I don’t move through the world ultra-masculine. I don’t move through the world ultra-feminine. I’m just there.”

Porter’s efforts to de-gender clothing are nothing short of magnificent, most notably with the Christian Siriano tuxedo gown he wore to the 2019 Oscars. The look broke the internet, and every one of his Met Gala and red-carpet appearances since have nudged forward the concept of what a man could, and perhaps even should, wear. “Fashion exists in a really expansive space for me,” he says. “It’s spiritual and political. Every time I show up, I’m a walking piece of activist art.”

Avant-garde designers Yohji Yamamoto, Rick Owens and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons are among his go-to names. “And I love wearing Thom Browne when people need to know I’m educated and fancy at the same time,” Porter says. “He takes classic silhouettes and suits and explodes them into the fantastical. That’s me. I’m very classic, but I’m also way over the top. I think people would be surprised at my closet, because I have really simple stuff for my everyday life.” Or at least his definition of simple, like the oversized black Yohji jumpsuit with swinging silver chains that he shows up to set in. His caftans run from solid-coloured sequins to psychedelic swirls. The loose cover-ups were his uniform during the COVID shutdowns, an experience that was painfully triggering. “COVID was like being snatched right back into the AIDS crisis,” he shares.

Being fully Billy will hopefully include having his own fashion brand one day. “I’ve learned over the past few years how specific my vision is and how freeing it is to people,” he says. In the meantime, Porter continues to slay with his music and onscreen. After playing a divorcing dad locked in a custody battle in Our Son, released last December, he will turn his attention to the role of Baldwin in an upcoming biopic. And he’s spreading love, and lots of hugs no doubt, by setting up a philanthropic foundation and by playing an advisory role on The Bow, a digital hub for LGBTQIA2S+ people in the works by Toronto creative director Matthew McLaughlin. “I ain’t stopping,” Porter vows. “Like I say on the album, ‘Haven’t even started yet. Haven’t even broke a sweat,’ darlings. There’s so much work to do.”

On February 4, Miley Cyrus took to the 2024 Grammys stage to perform her award-winning song, “Flowers.” The tune, from her 2023 album Endless Summer Vacation, is a certified bop; an anthem for independent people everywhere who are embracing themselves and saying they don’t need a partner to have fun — they can do that all on their own.

Watching Cyrus, who’d taken home her first Grammy (!) earlier that night, rocking a silver 2002 vintage Bob Mackie dress from the designers “To Broadway With Love” collection with her hair teased to the gods, it was hard not to feel like we were witnessing the birth of a star — or in this case, a new certified diva.

A post shared by Miley Cyrus (@mileycyrus)

Cyrus’ latest looks, along with her musical evolution, have cemented the singer as a diva-in-training, following in the footsteps of legends like Tina Turner (a fellow Bob Mackie fan) and Cher. When it comes to her ability to reinvent herself, she is arguably this generation’s Madonna. And yes, Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga should be shaking in her boots.

To be clear, people didn’t always necessarily think “diva” when considering Cyrus. After all, she got her start on the Disney Channel at age 14, playing the role of a goofy incognito country singer on Hannah Montana. When it came to her style during this time, Cyrus dressed like most tweens in the mid-2000s, donning skirts over pants and cropped sweaters.

When the show ended in 2011, a then 19-year-old Cyrus was fresh off her first feature film, The Last Song, and in a relationship with future husband (now ex-husband) Liam Hemsworth. She was growing up, becoming a star outside of her teeny-bopper days, and her style reflected that. During this time, Cyrus leaned into old Hollywood cues on the red carpet, wearing designers like Jenny Packham. It was soft, it was sweet, it was safe — and it didn’t necessarily have a whole lot to say.

Then came the #Bangerz years. Shortly before her split from Hemsworth in 2013, the singer chopped and bleached her hair and  took to the VMAs stage with Robin Thicke and a foam finger for a performance we *all* remember. Arguably Cyrus’ most problematic era, in that she was consistently appropriating and emulating Black culture, her style during this period was defined by the shock factor, something Cyrus has said was a means to separate herself from the Disney character she’d played as a teen.

Post-Bangerz, the actor bopped around style-wise, trying dreadlocked ponytails (*shudder*) and harnesses, before reuniting with fiancé Hemsworth in January 2016. Until their final break-up in 2019, Cyrus — then 27 — had leaned into a rocker-chic aesthetic, donning the wet-look hair and tons of black and leather, mixing it up with designers like Stella McCartney and Saint Laurent.

In short, Cyrus’ style has been all over the place. But we shouldn’t be too surprised. Cyrus has spoken about the impact that being on a show like Hannah Montana at such a young age had on her identity and style. During a March 2021 interview on Spotify’s Rock This with Allison HagendorfCyrus shared that Hannah “was a character almost as often as I was myself,” saying that — like her character — she felt that when she looked like herself, without the glitz and glam of being thee Miley Cyrus, that no one cared about her.

“That’s maybe why I almost created a characterized version of myself at times,” Cyrus said. “I never created a character where it wasn’t me, but I was aware of how people saw me and I maybe played into it a little bit.”

But this new Miley Cyrus era feels different. Since her 2019 divorce from Hemsworth, and after a brief dip into a more ’80s punk rock aesthetic, the star has taken a step back from the public eye in many ways. She’s been dating relative normie drummer Maxx Morando since 2021, has focused on different acting roles (like starring in Season 5 of Black Mirror), and — after years of changing her sound — released some of the most acclaimed music of her career.

As Cyrus has entered her 30s, she’s seemingly settled into herself and is ready to embrace her power — and you can see that in her style. In a May 2023 interview with British Vogue, Bradley Kenneth (Cyrus’ stylist since 2015) said the singer typically references royals, goddesses, and divas with her looks, including Erykah Badu, Destiny’s Child, Grace Jones, Whitney Houston and Brandy.

“I’m also obsessed with ancient Egyptian queens like Nefertiti and Cleopatra, and greek goddesses like Aphrodite and Hera,” Kenneth also said of his references for styling Cyrus. That tracks. Cyrus’ Grammy looks specifically seemed to emulate 1970s-era divas of the singing world like Tina Turner and Cher in both their silhouettes and designers. And this is no coincidence. As WWD notes, Turner was a fan of Bob Mackie, calling on the designer during the 1970s and ’80s during her disco era. This was shortly after her divorce from her former musical partner Ike Turner, when the singer emerged from his shadow and reinvented herself.

Similarly, the 1970s is when Cher came into her own as a performer and TV personality, launching both the The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour as well as her own namesake show, Cher. Cyrus has worn Bob Mackie before, donning another archival dress from the same 2002 collection to perform at her 2022 NBC New Year’s Eve special. It’s clear that she turns to the designer in moments when she wants to feel strong and powerful.

Cyrus paying homage to these divas is no coincidence, signalling that, after years of being in the shadow — of the industry, men in her life, and constant criticism — Cyrus is similarly coming into her own. And we can probably expect a similar vibe fashion-wise moving forward, with Cyrus leaning into archival ’fits that honour the greats for her eardrum-shattering performances, and a more simple, streamlined look when she’s offstage.

Is it just us or did the Grammys red carpet 2024 feel a little…quiet? When it came to A-list celebrities, the likes Rihanna, Adele, Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande were nowhere to be found, and even Taylor Swift was a question mark until the very last minute. (Swift, heading to Tokyo this week before next Sunday’s Super Bowl, was rumoured to be skipping the Grammys but walked the carpet just before the ceremony commenced — in custom Schiaparelli, no less!)

There were a few fashionable bright spots on the Grammys red carpet, led by Dua Lipa in custom Courreges, Olivia Rodrigo in vintage Versace circa 1995 and Caroline Polachek in Olivier Theyskens’ Fall 1998 collection. (Hat tip to beloved Instagram account Check the Tag for the vintage intel.)

Plus, a few mega stars bypassed the red carpet and slipped into the Grammys for the ceremony only. Case in point: Canadian treasure Céline Dion who wowed the crowd in a surprise on-stage appearance. The legendary songstress, who has been privately battling a neurological condition called stiff-person syndrome for the last couple of years, drew standing ovations and looked stunning in Valentino couture. Former FASHION cover star Law Roach even reportedly came out of retirement to style her for the moving moment.

Taylor Swift is known for many things: Being a record-breaking songstress, an easter egg queen, and the saviour of famous millennial divorcées (CC Sophie Turner). Fashion doesn’t typically rank high on that list. The singer has her own sense of (kind of so-so) style, tending to not opt for edgy or trend-forward designers like many other celebs her age.

But maybe it’s time to pay a little more attention to Swift’s sartorial choices, especially what she’s been wearing on the sidelines of boyfriend Travis Kelce’s football games. The singer has been wearing a ton of small, female-owned brands lately, and the items she’s sporting have been selling out, proving that the Taylor Swift effect is very real.

Taylor Swift’s football fan style

In October of last year, Swift showed up to a Kansas City Chiefs game wearing a vintage Chiefs sweatshirt, paired with a pleated skirt and heeled loafers. She looked adorable, and even cuter was the fact that the top was sourced from Canadian, female-owned brand Ellie Mae.

Not only was Swift photographed cheering on her beau alongside sports bestie Brittany Mahomes, but she was later pictured leaving the stadium hand-in-hand with her BF — the vintage sweater front and centre. The internet went crazy for it, asking where they could find the same perfectly distressed sweater as Swift.

On January 13 of this year, Swift once again made another fashion statement when she showed up to a game in a custom, one-of-a-kind Chiefs jacket designed and created by Kristin Juszcyzk, the wife of San Francisco 49ers player Kyle Juszcyzk.

And on January 26, Swift took to the field after the Chief’s AFC Championship win in a gaggle of female-founded brands, wearing a sweater from friend Gigi Hadid’s Guests in Residence, the Heirloom Ring from Canadian brand Mejuri and a small #87 jersey ring — Kelce’s number – on her pointer finger from Kansas City brand Eb and Co.

A post shared by Mejuri (@mejuri)

The Taylor Swift effect

It may not seem like more than a cute outfit, but the reality is that, seeing stars like Taylor Swift don these brands does have a tangible impact. Weeks after Swift wore her jacket designed by Juszcyzk, the designer secured a licensing agreement with the NFL, obtaining permission to legally use NFL imagery on her apparel.

Basically, Swift’s exposure has made Juszcyzk’s designs so buzzy that the NFL — one of the most lucrative sports organizations in the world — knows that it pays off in advertising and promotion to align themselves with her. And there’s a monetary impact for these brands, too.

Much like the Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle effects — the phenomena in which whatever these two royals wear instantly sells out — the Taylor Swift effect is happening here, too. EB and Co., the makers of Swift’s #87 jersey ring, quickly sold out of the $14 USD ring, posting that they’re now taking pre-orders for the next batch.

Canadian designer Ellie Mae Waters was getting her nails done in October of last year, scrolling through TikTok, when she first realized the superstar was wearing one of the vintage Kansas City Chief sweaters sourced for her Toronto-based brand, Ellie Mae. Two weeks before, Waters had reached out via her PR to the singer’s stylist to see if Swift would  be interested in receiving some vintage pieces. She was. So Waters sent the package, not expecting much — if anything, that Swift would wear it casually around her house on a lazy day.

“I got a text that she liked [the sweater],” Waters tells FASHION, “and that was kind of where it was left; I was just so happy that she liked it, I thought that’s cool, it’ll be an inner-moment thing with me and [my team], no one else will ever know — but that was good, I loved that.”

A post shared by Ellie Mae Studios (@elliemaestudios)

Realizing Swift not only wore the sweater, but wore it on the sidelines of a game? “It’s exciting,” Waters says. “I love vintage so much because they are one-offs, they’re one of a kind, and they have so much history in them. And so the thought of Taylor Swift wearing this — she’s giving this piece this whole other story and this whole other life.”

The response online was immediate. As Waters told Toronto Life in an interview shortly after the game, by the end of that Sunday the brand had gained almost 1,000 new social followers and 12,000 visitors to the site. “It felt like any piece of collegiate vintage that we had on the site, it was gone immediately,” Waters tells FASHION. “These women didn’t care that they didn’t have the same sweater, but if they could say that they bought their vintage at the same place that Taylor Swift got it, that was enough for them.”

The impact of Taylor Swift wearing smaller, female-owned brands

Taylor Swift knows she’s that girl right now. Her every move is watched, scrutinized, and obsessed over, so it’s no coincidence that Swift — not normally known for making grand statements with her sartorial style — is choosing to do so on a stage of this size while centering smaller, female-owned brands.

This is especially significant considering all of the flak she’s received from many football fans for simply showing up to support her boyfriend, with people telling the singer that she’s “ruining football” and blaming Swift for the team’s performance (which, considering they’re going to the Super Bowl, we’d have to say is pretty good). By spotlighting these female-owned brands, it’s like Swift is intentionally giving a big middle finger to the haters and leaning into the idea that no press is bad press.

And let’s be real, this is intentional, after all she’s the *queen* of easter eggs and hidden messaging. “I don’t think that Taylor Swift does anything by mistake,” Waters agrees, “and I mean that in a good way.” Waters points to Swift showing up for — and highlighting — Juszcyzk, the wife of an opposing team member. “You don’t have to do that,” Waters says. “I feel like with Taylor Swift, if there’s a way that she can help women, she will do it.”

And for small businesses, this type of exposure is a dream come true. “When it comes to small businesses, having anybody, whether it’s Taylor Swift [or] the woman that lives next door to you, out there sharing something that you created, it will always move the needle,” Waters says, “whether that’s with followers, sales, or simply just giving that small business that little bit more of a boost they need to get up the next day and do this all over again.”

For the pop culture-obsessed, there is almost too much to keep up with these days. Barbie discourse! Celebrity lip-reading kerfuffles! Zendaya’s new bangs! One thing that we simply cannot allow to get lost in the shuffle? Kylie Jenner and her masterful fashion week looks.

ICYMI, Ms. Jenner has been going through something of a style shift as of late. After moving into minimalism in 2023 and bringing us back to the 2010s with pink hair at the top of the new year, the beauty mogul is now ubiquitous at fashion month. Taking a break from accompanying Timothée Chalamet to awards shows, the 26-year-old is currently in France, garnering gasps with every front row she graces. And there have been, as the French say, beaucoup.

Look no further than the Jacquemus show on January 29, where she sported a red fitted mini dress from the label’s new collection. Featuring a chest slit cutout and a chiffon overlay, Jenner pulled off perfect colour-coordination with her daughter Stormi.

And there is more where that came from. It appears Jenner, who reportedly works with sister styling duo Alexandra and Mackenzie Grandquist, has been on a mission to bring opulence to every outing.

The week before, she started off her stay in Europe with a (literal) bang: debuting a side-swept micro-fringe. Sported alongside an off-the-shoulder sheer skintight dress, this Parisian hairstyle served as a harbinger of OTT glamour to come.

On January 24, she attended the Jean-Paul Gaultier by Simone Rocha show in a corset dress with a gauzy overlay. Sitting next to Kelly Rutherford (Gossip Girl icon and Instagram It girl), Jenner exuded undeniable Upper East Side luxury.

Later that evening, she was once again accompanied by Stormi for her next outing. Headed to the Valentino show, the pair coordinated in black dresses with feathered detailing. For maximum diva effect, both wore dark sunglasses — despite the sun having very much set.

The following day, Jenner turned up the dial on the silver trend in a metallic dress festooned with scale-like sequins. Sporting soaking-wet hair, she drove home the otherworldly effect with a pair of ruched tulle opera gloves. Are they a stunning accoutrement? Yes. Will serve as an obstacle when it comes to scratching an itch or eating a snack? Absolutely. Slaying is thankless work!

Over the weekend, Kylie Jenner took a break from fashion week front-row duties. Instead, she went for dinner in many a jaw-dropping ensemble, from a crushed velvet vintage Alaïa set to a MM6 Maison Margiela babydoll dress with knee-high tan boots.

Say what you will about Kylie Jenner, but her fashion week outfits make waves. She debuted an animal head at Schiaparelli! She was an early adopter of the no-pants trend at Loewe! Her schedule may be packed between promoting Khy and attending Wonka screenings, but Jenner will always make time to turn heads with her style.

What’s next? The return of that one shockingly vibrant turquoise wig? We can only pray.

And just like that, Kim Kardashian and Balenciaga are back together. The business relationship between the polarizing billionaire and the controversial brand has been ostensibly on a break for the past few months. But now, they’re hard-launching their reunion in a major way: Kim Kardashian is Balenciaga’s newest ambassador.

On January 22, both parties took to social media to make it official. “For several years now, Balenciaga’s designs have been a part of my many looks — and some of my most iconic fashion moments,” Kim Kardashian said in a statement shared on Instagram Stories.

“This historic fashion house embraces modernity [and] craftsmanship and takes an innovative approach to design under Demna,” she added, referring to the brand’s creative director. If you’ve been following this relationship for the past year, this news may raise an eyebrow.

The Skims founder famously distanced herself from the brand in 2022, following its viral controversy. TL;DR: the luxury house was in hot water after releasing two campaigns that were perceived as promoting child exploitation. At the time, the label was known for intentionally drumming up shock value, be it through simulated snow storms or eye-assaulting Croc stilettos. But this campaign, social media feeds agreed, went too far.

The internet-breaking cancellation came at a bad time for the beauty mogul, who had been sporting Balenciaga at nearly every red carpet event leading up until that point — including the 2021 Met Gala — and who had become the de facto face of the brand.

Since then, Balenciaga has been trying to repair its sullied reputation. At the top of 2023, creative director Demna pledged to abandon the gimmicks he was known for in favour of quality craftsmanship. This strategy seemed to change in recent months, however, with the brand releasing an endlessly meme-able towel skirt and partnering with luxury L.A. grocer Erewhon on exorbitant shopping totes. (The latter of which Kim K debuted at their Fall 2024 runway show.)

Fast forward to now when it seems Balenciaga is positioning itself to be back in the same spot it was pre-scandal, and Kim Kardashian is lending her hand. “For me, this long-standing relationship is built on mutual trust and a commitment to doing what’s right,” she continued in her statement. “I’m excited about this next chapter for the brand and to become their ambassador.”

Following the announcement, Kardashian appeared in the brand’s newly released Closet campaign, which took viewers inside her dressing room. Starring alongside other fashion tastemakers, including Nicola Peltz Beckham and Paloma Elsesser, Kim Kardashian is wholeheartedly embracing her status as a Balenciaga ambassador. But not everyone is sold.

“At the end of the day, Kim Kardashian, in my opinion, only cares about money in situations like this,” said Jasmine Kharazi (@jasminedarya), a fashion commentator on TikTok. “She truly will do anything for a check,” another person commented.

Say what you will about Balenciaga and its newest ambassador Kim Kardashian, but there’s no denying they both know how to garner attention. It seems these two are endgame, regardless of controversy.

For better or worse, we suppose.

Fashion *officially* has a new darling, and it’s The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri. The Boston-born actress and comedian has been gracing — and slaying — red carpets since she first broke out in 2022, donning whimsical ’fits with playful patterns and cheeky embellishments from designers like Emilia Wickstead. Any designer would be lucky to dress her, but it’s Ayo Edebiri’s style choices of late that are especially worth talking about.

Taking 2024 awards season by storm for her work as chef Sydney Adamu, Edebiri has been walking the red carpet in powerful monochromatic looks from fashion houses and brands like Louis Vuitton(below), Prada, Proenza Schouler, and The Row. A departure from her previous looks, Edebiri’s recent looks have been channeling more Jackie O (literally) than Alice in Wonderland, with many of her outfits seemingly referencing or paying homage to strong women in history, like Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Whoopi Goldberg.

And we should be paying attention. Edebiri’s style change is no mistake, with her shift to strong, tonal looks coinciding with — and indicative of — her rise in power in Hollywood and on the silver screen. That’s a big deal.

To be clear, Edebiri has been a sartorial standout since she first began gracing red carpets on the regular in 2022. She favoured designers and looks that were arguably more youthful and adventurous, like a schoolgirl chic Thom Browne ensemble and a Cinderella-esque Rosie Assoulin (those gloves!) at the 2023 Golden Globes.

In many ways, these fun, fantastical looks were in line with her public persona at the time; appropriate for a quirky, mid-twenties comedic ingenue who started in improv. Of course, she was having fun with fashion through volume and decorative bows (see: the Giambattista Valli gown below) which should be celebrated. Edebiri wore the heck out of these looks, and wearing attention-grabbing outfits as a way to help herself stand out as a new kid on the block made sense.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Ayo Edebiri (@ayoedebiri)

Since then, Edebiri has shown that she’s here to stay, establishing herself as a coveted talent in the industry, breaking out in the second season of FX’s The Bear, popping up as a can’t-be-missed guest star on shows like Abbott Elementary and Black Mirror, and racking up a host of comedic roles in both big budget and indie films like Theatre Camp, Bottoms, and The Sweet East. She’s holding her own against fellow rising stars like Quinta Brunson and Jacob Elordi, and creating a name for herself outside the series — and identity — that first introduced her to the world.

In addition to her acting roles, Edebiri is also an accomplished writer, having worked on shows like Big Mouth, Dickinson, and What We Do In The Shadows. She’s a player in Hollywood, beloved by industry vets (not to mention the entire country of Ireland), and she’s clearly embracing it, as she should be — and that extends to how she portrays herself through her style.

Now, Edebiri has settled into her red carpet style, letting her work do the talking instead of her outfits, and looking to designers that are just as much of a household name as she is becoming. Since the Fall of 2023, Edebiri has been leaning on confident, sophisticated looks that compliment, but don’t overwhelm her, allowing the actress herself to truly shine in minimal strapless sheaths, solid (but fun!) colours, and structure.

For New York-based content creator and fashion analyst Tariro Makoni, after several breadcrumbs of fashion change, it was Edebiri’s buttercream Proenza Schouler dress (above) with accessories from Sophie Buhai at the 2024 Governors Awards that signalled an unmistakeable shift in the actor’s style. With both brands as fixtures of the “downtown NYC (minimalist) cool girl,” Makoni says, “I started anticipating that she was officially heading in a new direction. The look and glam just felt so intentional.”

And as people online, including Makoni, have pointed out, this shift in style aligns with Edebiri coming into her power in the industry.

“We get to see this simulation into power as this young Black woman ascending within Hollywood,” Makoni said in a January 15 TikTok video. Which is of course, worth noting, because as Makoni tells FASHION: “We are constantly signalling through our taste, which includes what we wear. The aggregation of your past experiences, your exposure, your interests, and your identity is subconsciously and consciously leveraged in constructing what we like and what we wear.” And often, dictates just how people will view and judge us and vice versa. “That makes fashion an invaluable currency in our ability to subliminally communicate our relationship to power and status,” Makoni says.

A post shared by danielle goldberg (@daniellegoldberg)

TL;DR: What we choose to put on our bodies says a lot more about us than just what colour we like.

And she’s right. From the American suffragette movement in the 1920s, which utilized a colour scheme of white, purple, and green as symbols of dignity, loyalty, and hope and conservative fashion in the name of resistance, to the donning of pinky rings throughout history as a status symbol for men (an accessory that has recently been reclaimed by women and women of colour), fashion has been — and remained — an indicator of one’s access and proximity to social and political power.

In addition to more pared down silhouettes, some of Edebiri’s more recent looks have included subtle nods to iconic women of the past. In an early January appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Edebiri showed up to the set in a chic trench coat and patterned scarf, perhaps an homage to Jackie O. And walking the red carpet at the Critics Choice Awards shortly after, Edebiri’s all-white The Row pantsuit gave First Wives Club realness and was reportedly an ode to none other than Whoopi Goldberg.

Ayo Edebiri in The Row at the Critics Choice Awards. (Photography by Getty Images)

Whether or not Edebiri and her stylist Danielle Goldberg, who also styles fellow recent red carpet standout Greta Lee, are consciously thinking of this or just playing around with the star’s fashion as many It girls are prone to do, the impact of this sartorial shift can’t be overlooked. In essence, Edebiri is taking up space; both figuratively and literally, with her 3-D leather Louis Vuitton look at the recent Emmys Awards — with its structured and voluminous boning in the skirt – leaving a physical footprint. She’s asserting herself as a major player in Hollywood, and most importantly, someone who deserves to be there, and, like Jackie O, Whoopi and the ladies of The First Wives Club, she too has staying power.

This is an especially important message given the fact that Edebiri is a young Black woman in a still predominantly white industry, and one that has been historically non-inclusive of women generally, but especially women of colour, who are still underrepresented in Hollywood — and even less represented when it comes to awards season.

Which is exactly why we need more actresses like Edebiri unabashedly taking up space and asserting their talent and power, and what makes her fashion evolution all the more exciting — and worth rooting for.

As of mid-January, we’ve already seen A-list stars on the red carpet at the Golden Globes, Governors Awards, Critics Choice Awards and most recently, the Emmys.

Postponed from September 2023, the Emmys 2024 red carpet took place on January 15 and stars from some of your favourite shows were in attendance. The case of The White Lotus was well-represented, with Aubrey Plaza standing out in a surrealist Loewe creation. Suki Waterhouse gave maternity wear a couture spin in red Valentino. And meanwhile, both Issa Rae and Jessica Chastain both wore fabulous fringed and feathered frocks that would look right at home on a dance floor.

Check out 15 stylish celebs from the Emmys 2024 red carpet below.

The 2024 Critics Choice Awards red carpet was a sea of chic black and white looks, plus some welcome pops of colour. Hot on the heels of the star-studded 2024 Golden Globes and the fashion-forward Governors Awards, celebrities flocked once again to Los Angeles on January 14 for an evening of recognizing the year’s best performances in film and television.

While attendees like Emma Stone (one of the evening’s winners!) and Kaley Cuoco opted for classic black gowns, in Louis Vuitton and Dior respectively, there were some delightful fashion surprises. Barbie herself left the pink at home, with Margot Robbie choosing a rosette-adorned red gown from Balmain. Meanwhile, May December star Julianne Moore wore a rich purple Chanel gown, a colour choice co-signed by Oprah Winfrey.

There were striking menswear moments, too, with rising style stars Ayo Edebiri and Greta Lee wearing all-white The Row and head-to-toe black Loewe menswear respectively. Both women are styled by Danielle Goldberg who has been dressing the celebrated actors in cool designers and interesting silhouettes in recent months.

Awards season is officially in full swing and the fashionable extravaganza continues on January 15 with the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. And while it’s always nice to see who takes home television’s most coveted honours, what we’re really watching is the red carpet.

Since 1949, the Emmys have celebrated the achievements of Hollywood’s television stars who, thankfully for us, turn out in their most glamorous dresses. And if the fashion from last Sunday’s Creative Emmy Awards is any indication of what we’ll be seeing on Monday, we’re in for some fashion.

Plus, after being delayed from fall 2023 due to the Hollywood writers’ strikes, not to mention the face that even the more low-key red carpets lately have been serving looks, anticipation for this year’s ceremony is even greater than usual. We’ll be keeping an eye out for stars like Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), Jennifer Coolidge (The White Lotus) and Sarah Snook (Succession) on the red carpet.

Until then, join us on a trip down memory lane as we revisit some of the best, most memorable Emmy dresses of all time.

Awards season is extremely back, my friends. Just look to star-studded and fashionable 2024 Golden Globes that took place on January 7. We’re barely recovered from the almost-painful beauty of Natalie Portman’s Dior Haute Couture (it was giving sequinned Monet) or Dua Lipa’s insane Schiaparelli (she apparently couldn’t sit it in, but worth it, IMO!), when here come to Governors Awards 2024.

This little awards show, which typically happens in the fall but was postponed due to the Hollywood writers’ strike, is more low-key than, say, the Globes or the Oscars, but celebrity stylists are working overtime this year to deliver look after look. And they weren’t sleeping on the job on January 9.

From Emily Blunt in a sleek Miu Miu gown complemented by a gargantuan Tiffany & Co. necklace (I weep) to Julianne Moore’s metallic Valentino and dainty Pandora lab-grown diamonds, the crème de la crème of Hollywood made it out for the 2024 Governors Awards — and looked chic doing it.

When Elspeth Catton is introduced in Saltburn, the aristocratic matriarch declares that she has a “complete and utter horror of ugliness.” It’s a pretty cruel thing to say, but it’s perfectly telling of her out-of-touch character (played by Rosamund Pike). At the 2024 Golden Globes, the actor brought Elspeth’s unsettling Saltburn essence to life.

Pike — who was nominated for Supporting Actress in the film — graced the red carpet in a fabulously morose look that mirrored her on-screen alter ego. Pulled from Dior’s 2019 couture collection, the ensemble comprised a black lace tea-length dress over a fishnet long-sleeve with floral appliqués. To top it off, she wore a voluminous matching heart-shaped fascinator.

The headpiece, by Philip Tracy, featured a theatrical bow (girl power?), which further added to the irony of this darkly elegant visual. And as it turns out, there’s an on-theme explanation for why she wore it.

Pike revealed that she had a skiing accident over the holidays, causing her face to be “entirely smashed up.” In true Elspeth fashion (imperfection = no), she rushed to cover the injury with a sartorial statement. If any look can make you feel curious, inspired and uneasy all at once, it’s this one.

Could she be headed to a funeral? Might she be on her way to a wedding? Is this just an average look for Tuesday dinner at Elspeth’s sprawling estate? All of these possibilities could be true — and that’s what makes Pike’s complex Saltburn character so alluring.

Elspeth is blissfully lacking in self-awareness and basic human empathy. In a movie filled with awful people, she truly shines for her unwavering unapologetic approach. “I’ve never wanted to know anything,” she reflects matter-of-factly at one point in the film, lounging outside her literal castle of a home in a breezy caftan. “She’d do anything for attention,” she says coldly of a friend who has died by suicide later in the film.

Her physical aversion to all that is not fun to look at speaks to the core of her beliefs. She is beautiful, and thus feels it is only fair that she surrounds herself with other equally pretty things.

Fittingly, Saltburn costume designer Sophie Canale gave Elspeth a vintage, bohemian wardrobe with flowy silhouettes and a relaxed flair. After all, she may be incredibly judgemental, but she won’t ever look uptight or stuffy.

On the contrary, she exudes peaceful ignorance as she meanders about the property’s gardens saying outrageous things with sobering seriousness. (“I was a lesbian for a while, you know…It was all a bit wet for me in the end, men are so lovely and dry.”)

Elspeth Catton is by no means a good person. She is however, shockingly shameless, intensely funny and undeniably dark. She may be morally murky, but my God, the woman can dress. And at the Golden Globes, this is exactly what Rosamund Pike delivered.

Being one of the internet’s boyfriends is a full time job. Just ask Pedro Pascal, who attended the 2024 Golden Globes with a broken arm.

Wearing a full look from Bottega Veneta, including a black and white turtleneck and black trousers, along with a pair of very zaddy glasses, the star of The Last of Us walked the red carpet wearing an arm sling. According to People, when asked about the injury, Pascal replied that he simply “fell” (…..k) but he didn’t let the accident stop him from having a good night. Ever the jokester, he had “ouchy” painted on his nails and made this hilarious reaction to losing the Golden Globe Award for Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series to Kieran Culkin.

Other members of the highly exclusive Internet’s Boyfriend club were also in attendance, sans a coordinating arm sling.

Andrew Scott (a.k.a. the Hot Priest) and Jonathan Bailey had an adorable twinning moment in all white.

And our pick for best menswear of the night goes to Barry Keoghan. Wearing a look fresh off the Louis Vuitton Menswear Spring 2024 runway, the Saltburn star appeared red hot in a crimson suit featuring the brand’s iconic Damier pattern.

Is it a nod to his character’s true nature? A wink to the infamous vampire scene? Is he potentially a new ambassador for Louis Vuitton? Or is he simply just giving his fans more reasons to love him? Either way, just call us Keoghanites (Keoghaners? Keoghanians? You know what we mean).

There were a few internet boyfriends missing such as Saltburn-alum, Jacob Elordi, and Paul Mescal, who starred in All of Us Strangers with Andrew Scott. But to have so many on the same red carpet, let alone the same room, was truly a gift. Minus the Pedro Pascal Golden Globes arm cast, of course!

Have you ever had that dream where you’ve gone to an important event, but your lady parts are exposed? Well on the Golden Globes 2024 red carpet, Gillian Anderson is living it and she looks absolutely fabulous.

At first glance, the Sex Education star’s look is straightforward: a white strapless dress and red bag by Gabriela Hearst, accessorized with some simple (well, as simple as diamonds can actually be!) Chopard jewels and a handbag by Aquazzura. But upon closer inspection, you’ll be sure to notice a faint pattern adorning the fabric. Not polka dots. No stripes. But vaginas. Lots and lots of vaginas.

According to the actress the gown was embroidered with the female anatomy as a way of protesting restrictions to women’s rights.”[I wore it] for so many reasons,” the actress told Deadline. “It’s brand appropriate.”

And while we LOVE a heavy dose of feminism when it comes to fashion, many fans are also speculating that it’s Anderson’s tribute to the final season of Sex Education. After all, why not kill two birds with one stone?

But if you think she was the only 50+ starlet to kill the red carpet, let us enlighten you.

Taking a similarly minimalist approach, Julianne Moore proved redheads should always coordinate their hair colour to their dress, with a custom Bottega Veneta ensemble.

Helen Mirren had us in a lavender haze with her Dolce & Gabbana matching set.

Meryl Streep was all business (show business, that is) in a sequinned skirt suit.

Hannah Waddingham looked sultry in a sheer lace mermaid gown.

And Sheryl Lee Ralph continued to prove why she’s the ultimate icon, in a black and yellow number. And there were so many more eye-catching looks!

While aging is usually a bad word in Hollywood, Gillian Anderson at the Golden Globes just proves that like a good steak, good style takes time to marinate.  And after the dozens and dozens of red carpets that these women have collectively walked, why not use your platform to make a political statement? Especially during a time where women’s rights have never been more in danger. No naked nightmares here.

Awards season is back, baby! After a 2023 Hollywood strike that lasted 148 days, 2024 is starting with a star-studded — and stylish — bang. The 81st annual Golden Globes took place on January 7 in Los Angeles and the Golden Globes 2024 red carpet didn’t disappoint. Scarlet red and creamy neutrals were the colours of the evening, and strapless gowns seem to be making a strong return, but there was no lack of interesting embellishment, proportions and accessories among the looks.

Talent from television and movies are honoured at the Golden Globe awards, and despite almost half of 2023 having been impacted by the Hollywood strike, the pool of nominees was impressive with cult-favourite shows like Succession, and films including Barbie and Oppenheimer, raking in the most nominations.

A-list celebrities from Selena Gomez to Jennifer Lawrence strutted the red carpet in designs from Armani Privé and Dior Haute Couture respectively, while internet boyfriends like Saltburn anti-hero Barry Keoghan went bold with their menswear choices. The Irish breakout star looked impossibly cool in crimson Louis Vuitton, and Pedro Pascal wore a patterned Bottega Veneta turtleneck accessorized with an arm sling.

Rising stars like Priscilla’s Cailee Spaeny and The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri wore strapless Miu Miu and Prada creations, with the former opting for a sweetheart neckline and a full skirt and the latter going ’90s minimal in a column gown with a sleek mini-train (which looked chic, incidentally, when she collected the Golden Globe award for best actress in a TV musical or comedy).

Meanwhile, ladies of a certain age (that’s to say, 55 and over) slayed the red carpet, with stars like Gillian Anderson and Angela Bassett stunning in curve-hugging gowns from designers like Gabriela Hearst and Dolce & Gabbana.

Hello, 2024! As we welcome a new year that’ll hopefully bring as many attention-grabbing style moments as 2023, let’s take a moment to check out what stars wore to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

Naturally, New Year’s Eve celebrations are an ideal occasion for wearing your glitziest outfit, and celebs didn’t disappoint in the sparkle department. Whether they were performing in Times Square or watching the ball drop at home in some subtle shimmer, the rich and famous were dressed to impress as they ushered in 2024. (Did you watch the ball drop in sweats and two-day old hair? Same.)

Check out our round-up of celebs on New Year’s Eve 2024 and see how they spent their countdowns to midnight — and what they wore — below.

Megan Thee Stallion

To take the stage during Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin Eve celebration in NYC, Megan Thee Stallion wore a purple custom two-piece set by Nike and House of JMC. When sharing photos of the performance look, which included custom sneakers with “Hottie” written on the sole, the rapper also teased an upcoming collab between her and the sportswear brand.

Meg later slipped into a post-performance ensemble consisting of a glamorous floor-length, gemstone-encrusted gown also by House of JMC. She completed the look with a matching choker, sleek hair and a makeup look by Revlon.

Taylor Swift

To close out one of the biggest years of her career, Taylor Swift spent NYE supporting her boyfriend Travis Kelce by attending the December 31 Chiefs game at Arrowhead Stadium. In her usual game day style, Swift sported a Chiefs letterman jacket (that happened to match the one Kelce wore just the week before) with her signature red lip.

Later in the evening, Swift rang in 2024 in a bejewelled minidress and a festive updo decorated with Jennifer Behr barrettes at a party with Kelce, fellow Chiefs’ player Patrick Mahomes, his wife Brittany Mahomes and more.

Sabrina Carpenter

While performing her hit song “Feather” in Times Square, Sabrina Carpenter showcased her signature girly style in an all-white corset look that was giving vintage Madonna. After removing the fluffy shrug she began the performance in, the singer danced onstage in a mini-dress, white lace opera gloves and sky-high platform boots.

Beyoncé

In a series of photos shared on January 1, Beyoncé gave us a glimpse into her holiday celebrations. The carousel featured Queen Bey in a preppy tweed jacket and skirt set which she wore over a white corset top. Although the look was surprisingly absent of metallics (a 2023 trend that she played a major role in popularizing thanks to her Renaissance Tour), Beyoncé devoted one photo to showcasing a large diamond raindrop necklace. Casual!

Dua Lipa

No one vacationed quite like Dua Lipa in 2023 and the singer kept her endless summer vacation going well into winter with an NYE trip to Jaipur, India. While celebrating alongside family and friends, Dua donned a dark brown halterneck gown by Tom Ford.

Blake Lively

While other celebs were out partying on New Year’s Eve, Blake Lively kept her festivities low-key, celebrating at home (relatable!). In an Instagram Story, Lively shared that her evening was filled with smeared lipstick, martini earrings, sparkly Pat McGrath eyeshadow and a sweater that she didn’t realize she was wearing inside out (also relatable!).

Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj welcomed 2024 dressed as a self-proclaimed “Alaïa Barbie,” wearing extra-long crimped blonde hair, an Alaïa off-the-shoulder crochet bodysuit and shiny Alaïa ankle booties. The crowd went crazy as Minaj performed her iconic songs at E11EVEN Miami — but just don’t ask her to perform “Starships.”

Victoria and David Beckham

The Beckhams were dressed to the nines while celebrating the 2024 at home with their children. Ever the pros at wearing subtly matching outfits, Victoria opted for an elegant emerald green, long-sleeve gown, while David donned a rich navy blue suit and spiffy brown dress shoes that complemented the jewel tone of his wife’s dress.

Julia Fox

To celebrate alongside countless other celebs at E11EVEN Miami’s New Year’s Eve party, Julia Fox took the metallics trend into 2024 with a gunmetal grey, star-adorned cut-out dress, platform heels and a very NYE shiny top hat.

May we all feel as confident to step out of our comfort zones in 2024 as Ms. Mariah did for this photo.

There are few celebrities who have modern fashion girlies in a chokehold quite like Hailey Bieber. Between the elevated simplicity of her street style looks and her glam red carpet moments to her knack for turning just about anything into a beauty trend, Bieber continues to be a blueprint for copycat-worthy style.

The model and Rhode brand founder has had quite the public style evolution. From sporting skinny leather pants and high-top sneakers during the 2010s to her often sophisticated looks of today, Bieber’s style has hit its stride.

And, despite being labelled as a “double nepo baby” by New York Magazine because of her famous father and husband, Bieber has managed to carve out her own fashion forward personal brand for herself that sets her apart — and she’s had fun while doing it.

In honour of her luxurious yet seemingly attainable style, we’re rounding up some of Hailey Bieber’s best looks of 2023.

December 2023

The slightly chillier weather in L.A. didn’t stop Bieber from donning the no-pants trend.

While out running errands with her husband, the model paired an oversized red sweatshirt with a loose-fitting camel coat from The Row, Mary Jane flats from Sandy Liang with preppy white socks, a top-handle Saint Laurent duffle bag and a vintage Nike baseball cap.

November 2023

Photography by Getty Images

The month prior, the A-lister also rocked the pantsless look — or so it seemed.

For this NYC outing, Bieber is actually wearing a barely-there leather miniskirt from Cultnaked, which she paired with Calzedonia sheer black tights, heeled Mary Janes from Proenza Schouler and a maroon Chanel Boston bag. She opted for lots of layers on top to balance out the outfit with a loose-fitting black sweatshirt and a rich eggplant-coloured oversized coat.

Photography by Getty Images

It’s no surprise that the seasoned model knows how to adapt her wardrobe to the changing seasons, and she proved that she’s a pro at transitional fashion with this all-black evening ensemble she wore in NYC.

Bieber showed off her abs in a black bra top and a midi-skirt with a ruched waistband that dipped just below her belly button. She mixed in traditionally autumnal elements, including a trench coat, mid-calf heeled leather boots and a leather shoulder bag.

August 2023

Bieber wore a series of red ensembles to promote the launch of her Strawberry Glaze flavoured Lip Peptide Treatment in NYC, including this sweet scarlet mini-dress. She paired the strapless number with strawberry earrings and matching red mules.

Photography by Getty Images

Earlier that same day, Bieber sported fall’s hottest colour in head-to-toe red for an appearance on Good Morning America. The monochromatic look exuded old Hollywood glamour with Bieber pairing the romantic off-the-shoulder Vivienne Westwood tea-length dress with matching Maison Ernest stilettos and a chic patent leather handbag by Ferragamo. Staying on theme, the model’s iconic bob was styled into a deep side part and she further accessorized the look with elegant jewellery, including gold hoops, a wristwatch and a collection of rings.

Photography by Getty Images

For dinner with fellow supermodel BFFs Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid in Los Angeles, Bieber wore a vintage white Versace mini-dress covered in trippy yellow and orange dots. She paired the citrus-inspired dress with a matching orange Bottega Veneta clutch, white heeled sandals and a “B” pendant necklace for a very end-of-summer look.

July 2023

The off-duty model sported this denim-on-denim look while out and about in L.A. By pairing the quintessential white crop top and baggy jorts combination with a dark denim Calvin Klein jacket and pair of classic gold Brinker + Eliza earrings, Bieber elevated the outfit beyond just errand-running attire. She kept it casual by sporting a pair of trendy black Adidas Samba sneakers and crew-length white socks.

June 2023

A Hailey Bieber style round-up would be incomplete without this head-turning look. The A-lister spent a night out in NYC in full-on Barbiecore, stepped out in this glittery rose-coloured Vivienne Westwood bustier mini-dress. To accessorize, Bieber opted for a slicked-back hairstyle, glowy pink makeup, dainty Tiffany & Co. diamond necklace and earrings, transparent Gianvito Rossi heels and a matching sparkly purse.

Photography by Getty Images

Has any other celeb been a bigger advocate for jorts this summer than Mrs.Bieber? The model went full-on dad mode with this white monochromatic look, paired her baggy jorts from Loulou Studio with a skinny belt, her go-to micro-sunnies an a sock and sandal combination that defied all known fashion rules. With the help of a stylish Bottega Veneta bag and her signature brown bob, Bieber elevated the outfit from dad-chic to just plain chic.

May 2023

Photography by Getty Images

Tonal dressing? Check. Oversized coat? Check. White crew socks and loafers? Check! For one of the most stylish coffee runs ever attempted, Bieber paired a dramatic camel coat with a matching belted miniskirt, a simple black top, preppy black loafers and white socks.

March 2023

Strolling hand-in-hand after a brunch date with her husband in L.A., Hailey wore an interesting ‘fit with several elements that shouldn’t have necessarily worked together but totally did. The model wore yellow corduroy pants and a white top with Jil Sander heeled mules, a fuzzy orange-red coat and a red Yankees baseball cap. Despite the seemingly clashing pieces, the outfit was brought together by Bieber’s mini shearling Bottega Veneta bag that complimented the coat’s texture while matching her pants and mules perfectly.

In a cooler weather look that many of us Canadians can appreciate, Bieber stepped out for a coffee date with singer Justine Skye wearing a black bomber-style jacket and her usual black sunglasses, simple gold earrings and slick-backed bun. But, in a move that would only work during an *L.A.* winter, she juxtaposed the oversized coat with a pair of black biker shorts.

After a wildly successful year of breaking industry records, Taylor Swift has left the world wondering if there’s anything she can’t do. Predictably, the internet has a slightly out-of-pocket answer: Fashion is her flaw. According to many Swifties and non-Swifties alike, she can write “Style” and “Dress,” but she cannot style a dress. Or a skirt. Or a blouse. Or anything.

Some have even taken it as far as formally diagnosing her with an inability to serve. But before we pick apart every pleated skirt or misguided belt, let’s put ourselves in her inappropriately-styled Aquazzura heels (you know, the one’s she paired with a denim mini-dress, below): Maybe Taylor’s lacklustre fashion sense is a masterclass in branding and maintaining relatability.

As mentioned, Taylor Swift has had a really good year. In 2023, she released two re-recorded albums, produced the highest grossing tour of all time, became a billionaire, and was even named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year. This latest achievement had everyone discussing the photoshoot where the blonde superstar donned a Bardot bodysuit, a red lip, and her ragdoll cat, Benjamin Button.

While some took the opportunity to offer praise, others declared her boring and unfashionable. In fact, even the most devout stans can’t help but fantasize about a more fashion-forward Taylor, with this Swiftie photoshopping better outfits onto the star for an audience of ten thousand followers, and growing.

But Taylor Swift doesn’t need to be fashion-forward or trendy to make her mark on the world — that’s what her music and business acumen is for. And as she rises to new heights in popularity and economic status, nothing would be worse for her relatable image than a hard pivot towards a more polished, high fashion aesthetic.

To most fans, Taylor’s appeal lies in her ability to capture the heart of girlhood, a silly, playful space where one is invited to “try on” everything. We try on relationships and ideals, careers and ambitions, and, yes, we try on clothes. Lots and lots of clothes. And what could be more relatable than an outfit that doesn’t quite work?

Touring, awards, and other social engagements have made for a variety of cute yet, underwhelming, and — at times — shockingly affordable Taylor ’fits in 2023. Points were made when she: paired a cool coat with a truly basic outfit in the form of the denim trench coat over a long-sleeved russet dress; mixed aesthetics with biker shorts and frilly socks (above); and played it safe in a black bodysuit with baggy, mid-rise trousers (below).

Her fashion sense is unambiguously simple, neither minimalist nor fitting into any of the “cores” online. This didn’t change where new beau, Travis Kelce, is concerned, as shown through Taylor’s adorable Kansas City Chiefs sweatshirt paired with a pleated skirt.

Most of us can relate to this desire to both make a statement and fit in at the same time. And most of us can also relate to sometimes missing the mark. This belted Aritzia dress, for example, seemed to be the last straw for a Tiktoker who used the image to gently question Taylor’s styling capability.

But this is simply the other side of her relatable appeal.

Fans are comfortable guiding Taylor’s fashion sense in addition to seeing their own potential in her choices. Whether it’s criticizing her birthday look by listing off better options or lightly roasting her outfits with comparisons to the Ikea monkey, Taylor’s fans humble her with humour.

Alternatively, her usually affordable style allows them to recreate her outfits and purchase the same pieces she’s pictured with, like this Aupen handbag (above) and her affinity for Reformation boots. Even Travis has been pulled into the mythology of relatability, with fans likening their combined aesthetics to Luke and Lorelai of Gilmore Girls. And don’t get me started on the literal copycat styling techniques popular on TikTok right now where users mimic her Time Magazine shoot by wearing their house cats around their necks.

Through her fashion choices, Taylor Swift remains aspirational yet attainable without ever coming across as “above” the average fan. Her unpretentious nature combined with a few bold swings and misses like her Eras Tour movie premiere look make her more relatable than any polished and perfect celebrity could ever dream of being. And maybe that’s the point.

If cold-weather dressing is a special skill, Kendall Jenner is a master of the trade. The model has long been marking the start of winter weather with a fashion-filled trip to Aspen, and this year — amid rumours of her split from Bad Bunny — she upped the ante on luxe snow attire.

What does one wear when visiting a ski town known for its heated sidewalks, breathtaking scenery and refreshingly crisp air? For this street style pro, it’s an array of ensembles that reflect the cozy-meets-chic vibe of the Colorado community.

Snapped alongside her besties the Biebers, Jenner had an appropriately wide-ranging wardrobe for her packed schedule. Between hitting the hills and heading to dinner, the creative director of Fwrd also stopped by the boutique’s Aspen pop-up shop to promote the luxury pieces she’s curated.

Through it all, she once again made the case for having fun with fashion amid frostier temps. Below, see Jenner’s best Aspen 2023 getaway looks.

Keeping up with Kylie

While attending the launch of Fwrd’s Aspen pop-up shop, Jenner sported a sleek leather look that felt reminiscent of her sister Kylie’s Khy collection.

The all-black Rick Owens ensemble, which consisted of a belted leather coat and complementary split-hem trousers, perfectly fit the vibe of the new store’s luxurious winter staples. To finish off her look, Jenner wore simple black heels and her long brown hair in effortless loose waves. Perfection!

Sleek pre-slope style

As she strolled through the rocky mountain resort town on Friday afternoon, Kendall Jenner once again showcased the range of her Aspen street style prowess.

The model stayed warm in a cropped glossy Saint Laurent puffer jacket with leggings and fuzzy earmuffs. But the real star of the show? The belted leather splint boots from Rick Owens’ Fall 2023 collection, which emitted straight-from-the-ski-lift coolness.

A luxe oversized fur

For a nighttime outing, Jenner bundled up in an opulent shearling coat from Phoebe Philo’s new highly coveted brand. Coated in a glossy brown hue, the belted fur featured hand-painted black panel detailing throughout.

The model paired the piece (which retails at $27,000 USD, NBD) with a grey-black high-neck top, sheer black tights, glossy dark flats, gold hoop earrings and a leather handbag.

A snow queen serve

On a Saturday dinner outing, Kendall Jenner showed off her quintessential Aspen style with a glamorous long white teddy trench atop an all-black outfit. She finished the look with a festive leather purse covered in silver embellishments. (‘Tis the season!)

Justin and Hailey Bieber tagged along for the evening in their signature head-turning styles. Hailey wore a gargantuan grey shearling coat by Ferragamo with a black fuzzy handbag, leather boots and Matrix-esque shades. For his look, Justin matched his wife’s dark palette in a leather blazer with black loose pants. In true Mr. Bieber style, he threw things off just a touch with the addition of a trucker hat.

Festive and comfortable

A themed holiday sweater never gets old, just ask Kendall Jenner. Before hitting the slopes Aspen style on Sunday, Jenner sported a festive model-off-duty look comprising a patterned winter sweater, cargo ski pants and Ugg boots (a cozy girl must-have).

With her hair pulled into pigtails and her trusty skinny shades on, Jenner looked ready to fly down Aspen’s snowy slopes. More importantly, she successfully got us excited for winter.

Who was the best-dressed person of 2023? In a year filled with viral sartorial moments, the options feel nearly endless. Were you into the “Goth Girl” aesthetic? What did you make of Barbiecore? Did you revel in the constant stream of quiet luxury looks? It’s tough to pick a favourite fashion figure — but that’s why we’re here.

As December comes to a close, FASHION editors are looking back at the snazziest stars of the past 12 months. Below, we’ve listed our picks for the chicest celebs of the year.

Michelle Yeoh

I have so much admiration for Michelle Yeoh. At 61, she is still open to new ideas and taking fashion risks. She understands that the red carpet demands a fashion “moment” but she remains true to her own chic style. The Dior capelet pantsuit that she wore to the 2023 Bafta Awards in London is a perfect example of that. Bernadette Morra, Editor-in-Chef

Jeremy Pope

Jeremy Pope is always pushing boundaries and redefining the red carpet. I first noticed Jeremy back in 2021 when he wore an off-the-shoulder white pant look with Margiela Tabi boots.

He’s since evolved into a fearless fashion warrior! For his tribute to Karl Lagerfeld at the Met Gala, Pope wore a 30-foot-long Balmain cape embroidered with the late designer’s face. George Antonopoulos, Creative and Fashion Director

Margot Robbie

Barbie was one of my earliest fashion influences so to see her come to life in the form of the most gorgeous woman alive (a.k.a. Margot Robbie) fulfilled so many of my childhood dreams.

While it’s hard to choose between all of the amazing looks she wore during the Barbie movie press tour, this iconic black sparkle dress had me audibly gasping when I saw it on Instagram. Ken, who? Annika Lautens, Fashion News Director

Gabbriette

Mentally I’m still here, so you can imagine how thrilling it’s been for me to witness Gabbriette Bechtel’s star rise over the last few years. The model, singer and food content creator has been one of my favourite TikTok accounts to follow since I downloaded the video app, thanks to her ideal (to me) combination of recipes, fashion and beauty content.

She also happens to be one of the faces of 2023’s “Goth Girl” aesthetic and her beauty influence cannot be understated. I will worship at the altar of pencil-thin brows, a brown ’90s lip and smudged black eyeliner forever.

My favourite look of hers this past year was the black mesh corset dress she wore to the Versace Fall 2023 show, which she paired with old Hollywood waves. Heavenly! (Or do goth girls prefer ‘hellish’?) Souzan Michael Galway, Acting Beauty Director

Hunter Schafer

Hunter Schafer, best dressed 2023

It all started with a feather. The single-plume bandeau Hunter Schafer wore to the 2023 Oscars After Party quickly went viral, and has since lived in my head rent-free. I’ve long been a fan of the way Schafer mixes risqué and avant-garde aesthetics for a perfectly weird red-carpet result.

She ended the year with a daring rotation of method-dressing looks while promoting The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Her standout ensembles — ranging from a surrealist floral Marni number to paper-maché reminiscent Schiaparelli couture — sit at the top of my list of best-dressed 2023 moments. And in a year with Halle Bailey’s The Little Mermaid, that’s saying something. Natalie Michie, Social Media/Market Editor

Jasmine Tookes

A post shared by Jasmine Tookes (@jastookes)

I am nothing if not a lover of neutral-toned, minimalist pieces, and Jasmine Tookes was the best dressed in this category in 2023. Always polished with a slight edge — whether that be an all-black ensemble or a plunging neckline — this former Victoria’s Secret Angel is a true embodiment of both the model-off-duty and quiet luxury aesthetics.

Instead of playing with colour, Tookes’s fashion was all about shape. An ab revealing cutout? Ultra-wide trousers? A waist-cinching blazer? She was practically a shape-shifter. Though I’m constantly in awe of her ability to reinvent the little black dress for red-carpet appearances, the look I can’t seem to get over from this year is a simple, floor-grazing silk number that draped over her modelesque frame exquisitely during the summer. There are few things we love more than a fashion-filled press tour for a new film, and Timothée Chalamet is currently feeding into our obsession with his Wonka promotional style.

In the new retelling of the classic Ronald Dahl story, Chalamet plays a young Willy Wonka who’s modelled after Gene Wilder’s eccentric and outgoing Wonka from the original 1971 Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. In keeping with the method dressing approach that many actors have been taking on recent red carpets (which is when an actor channels their character from the project they’re promoting through their fashion), it makes sense that many of Timmy’s Wonka press tour looks are seemingly inspired by the iconic chocolatier.

And tbh, we’d expect nothing less from Timothée, seeing as the actor has never been one to shy away from a daring fashion moment. Who could forget his head-turning bright red backless halter-neck ensemble from the 2022 Venice Film Festival or the many times that he’s made headlines for donning womenswear to black-tie events?

Plus, the actor recently cited none other than his Dune co-star Zendaya as inspiration for his Wonka style. In an interview with Access Hollywood, Chalamet called Zendaya a “great example” for how actors should be dressing as they promote their latest projects. He went on to say, “In this day and age, you can sort of lean into what the vibe of a movie is in the promotional stuff you do” and described Wonka as “cheerful, fun and colourful.”

With Zendaya as his inspiration and a seemingly endless supply of creativity to draw from, it’s no surprise that each of Timmy’s Wonka looks (so far) has outdone the last.

Without further ado, come with us to see a world of pure Timothée Chalamet Wonka style imagination as we round up the actor’s best looks from the Wonka press tour thus far.

While attending Toronto’s very own Yorkdale Shopping Centre for a special Wonka screening, Timmy put a fanciful twist on the classic all-black suit.

As he posed for selfies and signed autographs, the actor looked dapper in a double-breasted blazer that faded from retro grey into a classic black hue. He paired the ombré overcoat with sleek tailored trousers, shiny dress shoes and an eye-catching sparkly necklace and bracelet combo.

Shimmery womenswear moments

For the Paris premiere of Wonka on December 1, Timmy sported a beaded top from Tom Ford’s Spring 2024 womenswear collection, taking “jeans and a nice top” to new fashionable heights. He paired the shimmery look with simple black slacks and boots, allowing the tank’s thousands of beads to truly shine. Plus, fans were extra impressed that the actor managed to still look “so naturally hot” in the sleeveless shirt while it was allegedly only -3°C that evening. Anything for the look, right?

While promoting Wonka in London on November 29, Chalamet rocked another glittery top from the same Tom Ford womenswear collection. Similarly to his Paris premiere look, the actor wore classic black slacks and Chelsea boots to contrast the shimmery opulence of his gold mesh shirt.

Willy Wonka 2.0

Making an appearance at The Game Awards in Los Angeles on December 7, the actor channelled Gene Wilder’s Wonka in a surprisingly traditional, yet timeless, head-to-toe Celine suit.

Chalamet still made the spiffy ensemble his own by focusing on subtle details, including flared trousers in a barely-there pinstriped design that matched his four-button vest. Plus, instead of a traditional tie, he left his white-collared shirt slightly unbuttoned for a more relaxed look. As expected, he accessorized the outfit with his signature Chelsea boots and an elegant silver necklace.

While attending the Los Angeles premiere on December 10, Chalamet chose to sport another adventurous look from one of his favourite designers, Tom Ford.

The custom ombre suit featured a croco-embossed single-breasted jacket with matching trousers in a deep chocolate hue — very fitting considering he’s playing one of the world’s most well-known chocolatiers. Then, he finished the look with Chelsea boots (also by the designer) and his signature jewels.

And, although they weren’t pictured together, his rumoured girlfriend, Kylie Jenner and her mother, Kris, were also allegedly in attendance to support the actor on his big night — how sweet!

At the world premiere of Wonka in London on November 28, the actor wore yet another look from the Tom Ford Spring 2024 collection (we’re sensing a pattern here). For this look, Chalamet chose a head-to-toe velvet suit in a striking plum colour that was reminiscent of the iconic purple jacket Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka wears in the original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Timmy added a slightly scandalous touch by foregoing a shirt, letting his custom Cartier candy-inspired necklace, on which he worked closely with the jeweller, take centre stage.

During an outdoor press stop in London on November 27, Timothée Chalamet displayed his Wonka style once again a pinstriped suit from Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2024 menswear collection. The suit featured an interesting layered design with a subtle peplum jutting out from the actor’s hips and falling into a short train, a unique and playful silhouette that felt like something Gene Wilder’s Wonka would wear to a black-tie event. He kept the rest of the look simple with lace-up boots and his classic Cartier jewels.

In one of his most colourful looks to date, Chalamet wore a custom lavender patent leather set from Prada for the Tokyo premiere of Wonka on November 20. The actor paired the eye-catching look with sleek white boots and Cartier jewels (he’s an ambassador for the house). Not only does the glossy purple look act as a callback to the original Wonka’s memorable purple jacket, but the outfit’s shiny finish can’t help but remind us of some of our favourite candies. Laffy Taffy anyone?

The Kylie effect

Arriving in Tokyo on November 18, Chalamet wore an all-black look topped by a statement leather maxi-coat and chunky boots. Though we’d once label this look as “Matrixcore,” we can’t help but see the similarities between Timmy’s leather jacket and several pieces from his rumoured girlfriend Kylie Jenner’s debut Khy collection. We’re not sure if this ensemble is hinting at any future coordinated couple looks from the duo, but we’ll be sure to keep an eye out.

The golden ticket

Timmy kicked off his Wonka promotional tour with a bang, hosting Saturday Night Live on November 11 in a gold medallion-embellished Celine Fall 2023 jacket. As he sang a parody of the iconic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory tune “Pure Imagination,” his jacket sparkled under the studio lights so brightly, he looked a bit like a lucky golden ticket himself.

Happy birthday, Taylor Swift! The singer turned 34 on December 13, and this year, she has plenty to celebrate. From her endless street-style moments to her consistently viral hits, the artist is certainly living out her Wildest Dreams right now (get it?). Arguably the most defining aspect of this past turn around the sun has been her record-breaking, fashion-filled Eras tour.

In true superstar style, Swift has been consistently outdoing herself with her outfits for every show. With an over three-hour-long setlist of more than 40 songs, Swift has at least one themed outfit for each of her eras — and some eras have multiple costume changes, both on- and off-stage.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift)

From bedazzled power suits and ballgowns to embellished bodysuits and T-shirts, each look conceptualizes the feeling of its era through its silhouette, colours, and materials, with some even paying homage to her specific past tour looks.

In honour of her special day, we’re taking a look at some of the best Taylor Swift outfits from the Eras Tour so far.

The Lover era: A bedazzled pastel Atelier Versace bodysuit

Swift kicks off each of her Eras Tour concerts by opening with songs from her sixth studio album, Lover, and hitting the stage in this custom bedazzled Versace bodysuit with matching glittery Christian Louboutin boots. While she has two other versions of this super-sparkly bodysuit (one is mostly gold and the other is mostly purple), this costume perfectly encapsulates the Lover album as its light pink and blue jewels emulate the ethereal sky in the album’s cover art.

The Fearless era: A gold fringe Roberto Cavalli dress

A post shared by Roberto Cavalli (@roberto_cavalli)

To perform hits such as “You Belong With Me” and “Love Story” from her second studio album, Fearless, she’ll often don this gold, shimmery fringe custom Roberto Cavalli dress that’s very similar to another look the designer created for her Speak Now Tour back in 2011. For this part of the show, Swift continues to sport the glittery Louboutin boots from the Lover era and accessorizes with a rhinestone-covered guitar that her parents DIY-ed for her before the first show of the tour.

The Speak Now era: A purple Nicole + Felicia gown

Swift has a few gowns that she rotates through for this era, but this bespoke Nicole + Felicia ballgown, which she debuted the weekend that Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) was released, stands out from the rest. This dress features a simple v-neck bodice which transitions into a voluminous three-tiered sparkly ombré skirt, no doubt a nod to this album’s violet cover art. The spectacle of this dress is fitting for this portion of the show as Swift remains mostly in one spot as she performs nostalgic hits such as “Enchanted” and “Long Live.”

The Folklore era: A green Alberta Ferretti dress

A post shared by Alberta Ferretti (@albertaferretti)

To transition into one of the longest sets of the show and performs songs from her Folklore album, Swift sometimes opts to wear this flowy, light green custom Alberta Ferretti dress that’s full of texture and movement. The intricate details of the kiwi-hued dress, such as the carefully embroidered leaves around its neckline and midriff cutout, encapsulate the imaginative nature of this era.

The 1989 era: A magenta Roberto Cavalli set

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Roberto Cavalli (@roberto_cavalli)

Swift opts for fringe once again with this bespoke pink Roberto Cavalli top and skirt set that’s perfect moving around the stage as she performs upbeat hits like “Shake It Off” and “Blank Space.” The look also pays tribute to another similar two-piece set that the singer wore on her 1989 World Tour back in 2015. By replicating some of her most iconic looks, Swift is embracing an old adage that’s often true when it comes to fashion — if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

The Reputation era: A one-legged Roberto Cavalli snake-embroidered bodysuit

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Roberto Cavalli (@roberto_cavalli)

As the only look for the Reputation portion of her show, Swift wears a sequined, one-legged Roberto Cavalli bodysuit with red snakes crawling up her leg and over her torso. The snake motif is an important symbol associated with Swift’s 2017 Reputation album and subsequent 2018 Reputation Stadium Tour. And now, she uses the animal to re-claim an era of her career where she underwent intense public scrutiny. This is in reference to a period of time in 2016 when Swift was being called a “snake” for revealing that she co-wrote her then-boyfriend Calvin Harris’ popular song “This Is What You Came For,” and when Kim Kardashian effectively called Swift a snake during her infamous feud with Kanye West. Ever since, Swift has used snake symbolism to represent that time period, and any Reputatione-ra outfit just wouldn’t be complete without the motif.

The Evermore era: A whimsical Etro gown

Photography by Getty Images

In keeping with the cottagecore feel of her 2021 Evermore album, Swift wears a custom Etro dress by Marco de Vincenzo to perform some of her most emotive songs. The deep burgundy dress features a tiered skirt and an empire waist. Of course, it wouldn’t be an Eras Tour outfit without some sparkle and this look certainly doesn’t disappoint in that department.

What’s this? Style icon and perennial It girl Alexa Chung doesn’t own a full-length mirror? How does she know her look is working if she can’t see more than her head and shoulders in her bathroom mirror?

“You have to vibe it out. Do what feels right,” she shared after Chanel’s Metiers d’Art show in Manchester on December 7. Chung was kitted out in a tweed Chanel coat, black leather shorts, (non-Chanel) thermal vest, and black patent knee boots that, she moaned, are completely sold out (she was wearing borrowed samples).

A post shared by Alexa Chung (@alexachung)

Chung described how her style is shifting since her birthday in November. “I’m really into a power shoulder and leaning more ’80s than ’60s since turning 40,” she says. “Kind of like Sharon Stone in Casino or Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface and it’s cocktail hour and I’m with a gang.”

She also says that what people see on social media isn’t a totally accurate depiction of her style. “I don’t think my friends would recognize that person because day to day I mostly wear jeans, jumpers (sweaters) and menswear,” she lists. Because she doesn’t have a full-length mirror she can’t shoot her reflection, so what gets shared are her event and going out looks which are captured by others.

So why doesn’t Chung invest in a full-length mirror? Up until now she’s been living in tight quarters, she explains. But that’s about to change. “My new house in East London which is almost ready will have a full dressing room with mirrored sliding doors. That was a prerequisite for the entire design.”

Have you been missing the over-the-top fashion of movie premieres and awards season red carpets? With the Hollywood strike forcing stars off of most red carpets throughout the late summer and fall, we’ve been starved for high-octane glamour. And we can’t be the only ones: Now that a tentative deal has been struck and promotion has picked back up, celebrities have been jumping at the chance to serve looks. Just look at Zendaya in fresh-off-the-runway Schiaparelli at a comic convention in Brazil, Timothée Chalamet giving Wonka, or the scores of high fashion at the 2023 Academy Museum Gala on December 3? From Jodie Turner-Smith in Christopher John Rogers to Kaia Gerber in Celine, we’re being spoiled and for that, we’re grateful.

The British Fashion Awards 2023 looks that walked the December 4 red carpet continued to deliver some of the most fun fashion we’ve seen in a minute. Eternal British style muse Alexa Chung was holiday-ready in 16Arlington, Anne Hathaway was resplendent in vintage Valentino and Canadian fashion darling Taylor Russell made a 3D Loewe creation look effortless. FASHION’s own winter cover star Lucien Laviscount of Emily in Paris fame proved that dudes can have just as much fun on the red carpet in a double-breasted Dolce & Gabbana vest look, while Pamela Anderson (also a recent FASHION cover star!) continued her commitment to embracing her natural beauty by going makeup-free.

Here, we round up some of the most exciting 2023 British Fashion Awards looks that walked the red carpet.

One of this year’s most-anticipated and fashion-filled concert movies, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, had two star-studded premieres in Los Angeles and London ahead of the film’s global release and, of course, both events were full of shimmery opulence and high drama.

For the fashionable U.K. premiere, Beyoncé wowed in not one but two dazzling looks.

The “Break My Soul” singer’s first outfit consisted of a custom Thom Browne couture gown with a peekaboo bodysuit fitted with a long, flowing train. She accessorized the hand-embroidered crystal look with black platform booties, fingerless gloves and dangly crystal earrings.

The sparkly gown complemented Taylor Swift’s shimmery silver dress, as the two stars posed together on the carpet.

Just as Beyoncé showed her support for Swift by attending her Eras Tour film premiere in October, Swift hit the Renaissance movie’s London carpet for another sweet legends-supporting-legends moment.

Swift followed the event’s silver theme, wearing a high-slit sequinned Balmain gown with Anita Ko jewels and Giuseppe Zanotti peep-toe heels.

Later in the evening, Bey changed into her second look of the night, which also happened to be designed by Balmain.

The singer’s bejewelled after-party look featured an artful, structured mini-dress embellished with countless embroidered pearls, crystals, and silver sequins. A dramatic blue gem was the focus of the look, sitting in the middle of Bey’s torso, a draped sequin hemline finishing off the ensemble. In usual Queen Bey fashion, she tied the look together with elegant black opera gloves.

Among the A-listers who hit the chrome carpet for the November 25 Los Angeles premiere included Issa Rae, Lupita Nyong’o and, of course, Beyoncé herself, who arrived fashionably late in a show-stopping, head-to-toe silver look.

As the guest of honour, Beyoncé shone in a custom strapless Versace dress constructed with the brand’s signature chainmail design. With its statement neckline and matching metallic gloves, the dress nodded to many of the couture outfits the singer wore throughout the Renaissance Tour’s five-month run. To finish off her futuristic premiere outfit, Bey sported a straight, hip-length platinum blonde hairdo and soft glam makeup.

In addition to the droves of stars who came out for the exciting occasion, Beyoncé’s former Destiny’s Child group members Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams, LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett all made a special appearance to support their (a moment that Beyoncé’s mom Tina Knowles shared in a sweet Instagram post). And, of course, each of the girls followed the unofficial theme of the evening with their head-turning looks.

In a subtle nod to Madonna, whom Beyoncé has cited as her inspiration on numerous occasions, Rowland donned a silver mermaid-style dress with an accented cone bra from Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fall 2023 couture collection. She complimented the dazzling dress with matching metallic heels and blindingly sparkly jewels.

Taking a more dramatic approach, the rest of the Destiny’s Child ladies opted for sleek, all-black looks. Williams embraced the no-pants trend by wearing a bodysuit with an exaggerated collar and a sheer skirt fitted with a tulle train by Bishme Cromartie. Roberson went for an asymmetrical look in a black velvet gown with a diamond-shaped cutout detail. Lastly, Luckett wore a black long-sleeved leather gown, accessorizing with a clutch and heels in Bey’s signature silver.

After the hundreds of custom designer looks that Queen Bey sported throughout the Renaissance tour, it’s no surprise that some of the evening’s A-list attendees wanted to pay homage to Beyoncé’s iconic on-stage presence with their premiere outfits.

Singer Victoria Monét did just that with a bright red hooded custom Theophilio ensemble, which featured a flowing train and matching mesh red opera gloves. This outfit emulated a hooded crimson mini-dress by Carolina Herrera that Beyoncé wore during the Hamburg, Germany stop of the tour.

Other special chrome carpet guests, such as the Alien Superstar themself, made references to more unforgettable moments of the tour.

In addition to showcasing Bey’s high-energy, superstar-level performances (not to mention tour looks), Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé delivers intimate, behind-the-scenes details on the making of the tour. Plus, the movie dives into Bey’s own personal journey of putting the world tour together, which reportedly helped her transform from a self-proclaimed “people pleaser” to the bona fide superstar she is today.

Check out more of the dazzling looks — including Blake Lively in a black and silver moment — from the Renaissance film London and L.A. premieres below.
