The past year has been a gold mine for new concealers. While the beloved beauty product helps when you lack sleep and are dealing with morning puffiness, that’s only half of the battle. Figuring out how to apply concealer greatly matters. Have you experienced creased concealer or noticed it gets patchy on your skin throughout the day? (Same.)

Luckily, we have the solution. Investing in one of the best concealer brushes can prevent the aforementioned scenarios. Below, we’ve rounded up our faves, based on shape, size and composition.

With the right one, you’ll have the confidence to sport a new foundation with your flawless concealer.

What to look for in the best concealer brushes

Remember when certain beauty products would include a brush? Yeah, those days are gone. And so, the hunt for the perfect concealer brush begins. “Usually for concealer, a synthetic bristle brush is best for blending and applying cream products,” says makeup artist Sabrina Rinaldi. “Something that is the size of the tip of your finger is a general guide for [brush] size.”

Before we get into the nitty gritty of concealer brushes, to ensure your concealer stays in place, Rinaldi suggests setting it with a loose powder. The type of concealer brush depends on the look you’re going for.

For a night out, using “a soft fluffy brush lightly [will] set concealer,” says Rinaldi. However, if you’re headed into your 9-5, “a flat stiff synthetic brush helps [concealer] set longer as it presses the powder into the skin.”

That said, for some beauty pros, using their fingers to apply concealer is the way to go. “My preferred method is to use my fingers. I find the heat from the fingers helps blend the product into the skin,” explains Rinaldi. “Using your fourth finger is perfect as it will apply the least amount of pressure.”

From pastel makeup dominating the runways to the cream blush renaissance, beauty is all about having fun! If you suffer from dry skin, you know that having a good base layer is a key first step.

Finding a foundation that doesn’t emphasize flakiness or texture can be tricky. After all, walking around with a patchy layer of makeup is not cute. Prevent that ever-annoying scenario by knowing which foundation to use. We’ve found the best foundation for dry skin, evaluating each one on ingredients, finish and shade range.

With the right fit, you’ll have the courage to sport your beautiful base with an easy-to-follow eyeshadow tutorial.

What to look for in the best foundation for dry skin

Before you put any makeup for dry skin on your pretty little face, it’s important to take steps to ensure you find the right one for your skin. “Customers with dry skin should be shopping for foundations that contain humectants,” explains Stacey Heintzman, owner of Gingery Esthetic in Sola Salons.

“These ingredients help draw more moisture to the skin, so it maintains hydration. Look for are hyaluronic acid and aloe vera.”

When applying foundation, avoid formulas that settle into fine lines. “If your skin isn’t properly hydrated before application and you’ve picked the wrong foundation, it will look flakey and give the effect of looking older,” says Heintzman.

“When you moisturize before your makeup application, you’re plumping the skin with emollients and ceramides to smooth out the skin for a perfect makeup application.”

For best results, Heintzman suggests a solid skincare routine before applying foundation. “Hydrate your skin and allow the products to penetrate before makeup application and when applying your liquid-based foundations use a wet beauty sponge, this helps your skin to look dewy.”

Update: After living a bare skin life for months, Pamela Anderson has acquired vegan skincare brand, Sonsie. Along with her sons Brandon and Dylan, the former FASHION cover star is now the proud owner of the cruelty-free line that was first founded in June by influencer Marie von Behrens-Felip. “Pamela has a deep passion for inner-wellbeing, a unique perspective on beauty, and is one of the earliest advocates for vegan & cruelty free formulations around the world,” shared the brand in an Instagram post announcing the news. We love this journey for Pam!

Forget the beauty and style trends forecasted for the 2024 year at Paris Fashion Week — FASHION’s October 2023 cover star Pamela Anderson is making headlines for going fresh-faced and makeup-free at the season’s biggest runway shows.

“I didn’t come to Paris Fashion Week and think, ‘Oh I’m not going to wear any makeup!'” shared Anderson in a Vogue France get-ready-with-me video ahead of the Vivienne Westwood Spring 2024 show where she used a base of DIY rose oil in place of foundation. “I don’t know, something just kind of came over me and I was dressing in these beautiful clothes and I thought, ‘I don’t want to compete with the clothes,” she told the publication. “I’m not trying to be the prettiest girl in the room.’ I feel like it’s just freedom. It’s like a relief.”

A newfound sense of self-assurance is something Pamela Anderson discussed in her October 2023 interview with FASHION. “For me, this is a period to get to know who I am,” she told fashion news director Annika Lautens. “It’s a powerful time, and I feel really good in my own skin.”

The empowerment of feeling comfortable in her own skin no doubt translated to her time on set; the Canadian icon was photographed for FASHION’s pages wearing subtle makeup, allowing her natural beauty to shine.

Paris Fashion Week — the last of the big four weeks, following New York City, London, and Milan—is considered to be the crème de la crème of fashion month. It churns out the grandest displays of opulence. The street style is impeccable. The glam is top-notch, and it’s the perfect excuse to indulge in over-the-top makeup and hairstyles.

For Anderson, it instead ended up serving as the ultimate stage to make a major no-makeup statement as she embarked on what she described on Instagram as “an adventure in Paris with fresh eyes.” From The Row to Isabel Marant and Victoria Beckham, the Canadian queen was a radiant beauty as she took on the City of Lights in a public display of makeup-free self-love, miles from her signature ’90s glam.

Since the release of the Pam & Tommy mini-series in 2022 and Anderson’s own tell-all Pamela, A Love Story documentary on Netflix earlier this year, we’ve been living in the era of the “Pam-aissance.” Having Anderson back on our screens has inspired a wave of kohl-rimmed eyes adorned with smokey eyeshadow and pencil-thin brows. And the beauty community is still longing to perfect that nude-lipped Pamela pout.

When asked about vintage Pam beauty looks going viral on TikTok, Anderson told FASHION: “I think it’s funny,” revealing that her sons, Brandon Thomas and Dylan Jagger Lee, first brought the trend to her attention. “When you start hearing that your image is on different mood boards, it’s pretty surreal. But it also shows that I marched to the beat of my own drum.”

The aforementioned nude lipstick look was a signature Anderson beauty look that emerged during the ’90s under the creative guidance and mastery of the late Alexis Vogel, her go-to makeup artist at the time.

Vogel, who passed away from breast cancer in 2019, both birthed Anderson’s iconic glam and is now part of the reason that the actress began to embrace going makeup-free. “She was the best. And since then, I just felt, without Alexis, it’s just been better for me not to wear makeup,” Anderson told Elle in an interview this summer.

A post shared by Jamie Lee Curtis (@jamieleecurtis)

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis took to Instagram to share her support for Anderson and praise her new look, which she described as an act of courage and rebellion. “The natural beauty revolution has officially begun!” she writes in the caption of her post. “@Pamelaanderson in the middle of fashion week with so many pressures and postures […] and this woman showed up and claimed her seat at the table with nothing on her face.”

Challenging Curtis’ caption, the top-liked comment of the post reads, “I think that rather than applauding women wearing no makeup, we should be applauding that she seems to have found her comfort zone and seems to be embracing what that is for her age.”

Like other celebrities, like Alicia Keys who decided to ditch makeup altogether in 2016 and Kim Kardashian who attended Balenciaga’s Spring 2017 show bare-faced during Paris Fashion Week that same year, Anderson’s makeup-free outings have contributed to a movement with a more mature perspective that brings the beauty industry’s fixation on youth into the conversation. “I like to say the word ‘life-ing’ instead of ‘age-ing’. Chasing youth is just futile,” she told i-D outside of the Victoria Beckham Spring 2024 show.

In today’s digital age, we also have to consider the no-makeup movement that has long existed on Instagram via the make-up-free selfie. As recently as last month, Selena Gomez shared a bare-faced snap with her 430 million followers. A makeup-free selfie also holds the power to make a bold beauty statement, especially when it comes from celebrities we’re used to seeing all dolled up. Not to mention the ongoing battle against faceless hate comments that may come along with it.

To quote Anderson from her Vogue France segment: “You kind of have to challenge beauty sometimes, you know. If we all chase youth or we’re chasing our idea of what beauty is in fashion magazines and everything, we’re only going to be disappointed or maybe a little bit sad. So, I feel like this is it.”

Watch below for more on why Anderson’s makeup-free moments at Paris Fashion Week were so powerful.

Take cover, there’s a mob wife makeup revolution on the rise.

Succinctly put by FASHION’s Natalie Michie, the mob wife aesthetic is “everything 2023 minimalism is not.” Sartorially, it’s defined by floor-length faux furs, bold animal prints, and oversized sunglasses that cover most of the face — because a mafia wife never knows who’s watching. Naturally, there’s an equally extra makeup look to match. And given the rise of trends like “indie sleaze,” it’s actually not that surprising.

The very antithesis of the fresh-faced, “clean girl” look that dominated 2023, characterized by Hailey Bieber-esque glossy lips, a rosy flush and slicked-back buns, grunge-inspired makeup looks are poised to overthrow minimalist makeup trends in 2024. With a mutual appreciation for excessive strokes of eyeliner and hair with body, both the mob wife and indie sleaze aesthetics are decidedly darker, with an admirable air of carelessness that mainstream beauty hasn’t embraced in a while.

Let’s examine the women of The Sopranos — who are the quintessential mafia wife models — for telltale signs of the mob wife beauty aesthetic. French manicures à la Carmela Soprano (Edie Falco) with tips so long they click and clack with every gesture. Brown-lined lips, sultry smoked-out eyes and overly coiffed hair in the style of Adriana La Cerva (Drea de Matteo). There’s a certain sense of, “don’t f**ck with me, or I’ll call my husband,” about it all.

These women would roll their eyes at the mere thought of stepping out sans eyeliner, or a wash of grey eyeshadow, at the very least. They’re probably convinced that the first drag of a cigarette feels better if they’ve got a “lip” (likely a moody mauve or a deep rouge) on. They’re always put together and wouldn’t be caught dead with limp hair that lacked volume, but they don’t take themselves as seriously as a clean girl makeup devotee might.

Elsewhere in the cinematic universe of mob wives, you can draw inspiration from Casino’s Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone) and her full-on lashes, Elvira Hancock’s (Michelle Pfeiffer) ultra-thin brows in Scarface, or Karen Hill’s (Lorraine Bracco) always-big brunette bouffant in Goodfellas. Modern “mob wives” may modernize the trend with almond-shaped French tips, hair curled with high-tech Dyson machines, or of-the-moment makeup like winged liner, but the overarching “IDGAF” attitude persists.

A post shared by Indie Sleaze (@indiesleaze)

Also on the grunge-glam spectrum lies the indie sleaze aesthetic. In 2021, TikTok’s resident trend forecaster, Mandy Lee, predicted the return of this trend, noting that some of the key characteristics of the era (which ran roughly from the early 2000s to early 2010s) were “provocative advertisements,” “amateur style flash photography,” and “opulent displays of clubbing.” No TikTok, just Tumblr.

The @indiesleaze Instagram account (above) brilliantly sums up the era with photos of real-life club goers — including icons of the day like Katy Perry and Ke$ha — as well as snapshots from raunchy American Apparel ads and stills of Brittany Murphy in Spun. “Documenting the decadence of the mid-late aughts and the indie sleaze party scene that died in 2021,” reads the account’s Instagram bio.

A post shared by Gabbriette B (@gabbriette)

As for makeup, indie sleaze glam is characterized by deliberately dishevelled hair, traces of glitter here and there, and smudgy kohl-rimmed eyes. Appearance-wise, these would be your Gabbriettes. Your Effy Stonems from Skins. Your Venetia Cattons from Saltburn. A party animal meets rockstar groupie, if you will.

And while we’re on the subject of Saltburn, we may have the 2023 film to thank for speeding up the revival of this mid-aughts aesthetic. Throughout the movie, Venetia remains in a perpetual state of day-after glam, which is precisely what the indie sleaze aesthetic calls for. Her undone, dark roots peak through a head full of bottle-blonde hair, and her blackest black liner appears well lived in.

In real life, falling asleep with your makeup on or failing to execute a flawless smokey eye can indeed result in peak indie sleaze glam. The more carelessly your makeup is applied, the better.

A post shared by Saltburn (@saltburnfilm)

While the mob wife and indie sleaze looks are distinct aesthetics, they are united in their departure from the sleek, minimalist makeup that has dominated in recent year. Between them, there’s a shared admiration for almost deliberate messiness that’s frankly refreshing after years of pursuing perfection (read: clean girl glam and quiet luxury). A person can only take so much barely-there makeup before they reach for ultra-black pencil liners and overdo their glam in a fit of rebellious rage.

Though minimalist makeup gives the illusion of being low-effort, slicked-back buns and glassy skin require far more maintenance than you may assume. Sometimes, it’s easier to embrace chaos and lean into a little grunge. Don’t let mean mugged scowls from mobsters and their wives fool you, you might even have fun. (Just don’t sleep in your makeup.)

The past year has been a gold mine for new foundations. But if you have oily skin, you know the drill: You apply your “long-lasting” foundation, only for it to melt off your face in an hour or two.

Luckily, you can prevent that ever-annoying scenario if you know which foundation to use. We’ve found the best foundation for oily skin, based on ingredients, finish and shade range. With the right fit, you’ll have the confidence to sport the best black lipstick with your flawless base!

What to look for in the best foundation for oily skin

Before you put any foundation on your pretty little face, it’s important to take steps to ensure you don’t end up looking greasy. “Understanding your skin is the first step to choosing the right foundation shade,” explains Gisaura Laporte, owner of Hair and Makeup By Gisaura in Sola Salons.

“If you have oily skin, use a powder foundation or an oil-free liquid one. These contain powders that absorb oil, leaving a smooth, matte finish. Mineral foundations work well on oily skin because the dry particles absorb moisture, preventing shine.”

Laporte takes extra steps when applying foundation for people with oily skin. “Use a matte primer before the foundation,” she says. “This creates a layer that keeps the oil from breaking through.”

In the end, a solid skincare routine does wonders for makeup application. “If you have oily skin, following a daily skincare routine is the best way to reduce breakouts and control shine. Cleansing, toning and moisturizing both morning and night are key ingredients to your daily skincare routine.”

From the softness of pastel makeup to the grunge vibes of black lipstick, beauty is all about having fun and experimenting. And what makes a true beauty lewk is a good mascara. For those of us who want length, dimension and run-free colour, waterproof mascara is a go-to.

While smudge-proof formulas require a lot of scrubbing to remove — which is harsh on the eyes and even more harsh on the lashes — the best tubing mascara can amp up your makeup game without irritation.

What is tubing mascara, anyway?

Smudging and flaking are two words you don’t want to be associated with your mascara. While regular mascaras are made with waxes and silicones, tubing mascaras are made with water-soluble polymers that create flexible tubes around each lash.

Instead of coating your lashes with thick layers of waterproof mascara, tubing mascara easily wraps each lash in water-resistant, tube-like polymers (almost like a little cap that washes off). It sounds weird, but these tubes make your lashes look good and stay that way for hours.

The result? A flawless finish that’s easy to remove!

What to look for in the best tubing mascara

The phenomenon of tubing mascara has dominated social media, and rightfully so. “Tubing mascara forms a water-resistant shield around your lashes. No more panda eyes even if you break a sweat, cry, or even run in the rain,” explains Gisaura Laporte, owner of Hair and Makeup By Gisaura in Sola Salons.

“The fascination is in the removal process. You don’t need a makeup remover, just warm water. It’s smudge-proof, long-lasting, no clumping and gentle on lashes.”

But, what’s the difference between traditional and tubing mascara? “Look at the ingredients and if they mention anything like propanediol, 10 dimethicone, polysilicon-11, cera alba, or glyceryl stearate, those are polymers, and that indeed is a tubing mascara,” says Laporte.

She recommends using tubing mascara in combination with a lash primer because it contains fibres that wrap around every single lash. This helps to disguise the whiteness of the primer formula, but it will add extra length, too. Hot tip: Tubing mascaras also tend to be longer lasting than traditional mascaras.

“If you are looking for a mascara that can provide long wear, smudge resistance, and easy application, I highly suggest trying a tubing formula. I get so many compliments. People think that they are false lashes!”

The art of applying eyeshadow is one that, like most things, requires practice to perfect. Fortunately, if you’re looking to up your glam game, the internet is brimming with in-depth eyeshadow tutorials designed to guide us through the process of pulling off intricate lid looks like a professional.

So whether you’re an amateur artist or you actually are a pro looking to polish your craft and get some inspo for new looks, we’ve sourced five easy-to-follow tutorials that detail the coolest techniques to try out there. From the cut crease to the halo eye, here are the eyeshadow looks we’ve been loving, and the products you’ll need to replicate them.

Try halo eyes

The “halo eye” technique gives off an ethereal aura that professional makeup artists turn to often, and for good reason. Though it’s fairly simple to accomplish, the result is a mesmerizing ombré effect of matte and glitter shades. And it looks masterfully crafted every time.

On TikTok, makeup artist Jonathon Thorpe walks us through his take on the halo eye technique. For the base of the look, Thorpe recommends laying down either a dark-coloured liquid, pencil, or cream matte shade to the inner and outer corners of the eye in a dome-like shape—avoiding the centre of the lid. “This works well in two ways,” he explains. “One is that it’s gonna create something slightly tacky on the lid that the eyeshadow is going to stick to, and it also puts down a lot of pigment quite quickly so you don’t need to blend and add as much eyeshadow.” Next, buff out your base with a fluffy brush and apply a similarly shaded eyeshadow over top of the outer and inner corners.

When you’re ready to incorporate your middle shade—which is typically a glitter but can also just be a much lighter colour—dip into your desired pigment with your finger and apply to the centre of the lid. Follow up with an eyeshadow a few shades lighter than your base colour along the inner and outer corners of the eye for a seamless finish. If you’re prone to swiping one glittery shade all across your lids, this look will take your artistry to the next step.

Going for a glittery halo eye like Thorpe? Infused with light-reflecting pearls and refined micro-glitter, Hourglass’ Scattered Light Glitter Eye Shadow in the shade “Vivid” was made for this technique.

Wear a soft cut crease

If you’ve been exposed to the world of glam for long enough, you’ve probably heard the term “cut crease” being thrown around here and there. With its sharp “cut” of light-coloured eyeshadow over the lid contrasted by a darker, flared-out shade in the crease, we’ve all been intimidated by this striking eye look. The good news? It’s not just reserved for the pros. With a little bit of eyeshadow and concealer you can pull off this optical illusion eye.

Sephora Squad 2023 inductee and TikTok influencer @aminaplease is known on the app for her dramatic cut crease and flawless glam, so we knew we could rely on her beginner-friendly eyeshadow tutorial for this technique. Start off by reaching for a neutral-toned eyeshadow palette, and pick up a shade that isn’t quite as dark as black, but still contrasts against your skin tone. Buff this out all over the lid and work it up to your eye socket.

For the pièce de résistance, take one of your lightest shades of concealer and begin to apply a small amount of the product over the lid to start creating that “cut” effect. “The key is not to pack on the product. I’m really trying to dispense it as much as I can using as little product as possible so it doesn’t get cakey,” the influencer explains in her video. Reaching for your eyeshadow palette once more, opt for an off-white shade mixed with a dab of your concealer and pack it onto the lid over your base. As you work the shadow in, you’ll begin to see that dramatic “cut” in your crease take shape. Lastly, use a mid-brown toned eyeshadow as a transitional shade to diffuse the outer corner and refine the dark edge of your crease. Congratulations, you’ve officially cut your crease like a pro!

Though you can complete a cut crease usually virtually any eyeshadow shades you’d like, neutrals are always a safe bet. The newly reformulated NYX Professional Makeup Ultimate Shadow Palette in “Warm Neutrals” boasts 16 easy-to-wear shades you’re bound to reach for when recreating this look.

Experiment with abstract artwork

@meicrosoft

@esantoinette taught me this eyeshadow technique and I haven’t been the same ever since #eyeshadowtutorial #makeup #beauty

♬ original sound – maeve – ciri.ae

The most intricate eyeshadow looks out there may require the use of precisely shaped brushes, but some of the coolest ones can be created using only your hands. Take Toronto-based makeup mastermind Mei Pang, for example, who created this shimmering swirl of abstract art on her eyelids using her fingertips as the main tool.

To recreate Pang’s look, begin by picking up a light shimmery shade on the tip of your finger. The warmth of your finger will allow for the pigment to be easily dispersed over your lids, and can also allow for more unique placement and shapes to be formed on the eye. Dive right in and begin to swipe your glitter over the lid, near the inner corner, and beneath your brow bone. Then, going in with a makeup brush, trace the outer edges of your shimmer shades with a darker eyeshadow to add depth and dimension.

If you’re looking to get even more experimental, you can take these shadows beyond the limitations of your eyelid, extending them above your brow, down your nose, and underneath the eye. What we love about looks like this is that you can truly rely on your own creativity to inform the look, making it fully foolproof.

When Danessa Myricks launched the Lightwork V: I Am Palette for Eyes and Face earlier this year, we knew it’d be one glitter lovers couldn’t live without. Aquatic blue shades “Strong” and “Brave” will be your go-tos as you follow along Pang’s eyeshadow tutorial.

How to: eyeshadow for hooded eyes

@elenarachitskaya

Let me start by saying that hooded eyes are not bad eyes 👀 They just need a bit of a different technique of makeup Can you see the difference at the end? My biggest tip for hooded eyes is “LOOK STRAIGHT INTO YOUR MIRROR” 😅✍🏻 Product Lineup @toofaced: 📌 cosmic crush eye shadow palette 📌 lip injection maximum plump extra strength lip plumper gloss (yummy bear) 📌 mascara better than sex doll lashes #hoodedeyes #hoodedeyesmakeup #eyeshadow #eyemakeuptutorial #eyeshadowtips #howtomakeup #eyesmakeup #makeuphacks #sephorasrbija

♬ GASLIGHT – INJI

Having hooded eyelids means getting creative with how you apply shadow. Don’t just take our word for it, BeautyToker Elena Rachitskaya’s hooded eyeshadow tutorial went viral reaching over one million views—with a comment section full of satisfied viewers with hooded lids.

First, Rachitskaya recommends taking a warm, mid-toned eyeshadow shade on a fluffy brush that is the right size for your eyes over your lids as you look straight into the mirror. This way, you can see whether or not the shadow is visible from a head-on view, or if you need to bring it up higher. Continuing on, you can add depth to the look using darker shades and smaller brushes along the outer corner, undereye, and lash line.

For the final eyeshadow step, use a darker eyeshadow to create a softly diffused “new crease” slightly above where your natural crease is, and apply a light shadow to the inner corner of the lid where it’s visible. If you’re feeling fancy, pop a glittery shade onto the inner corners. The before and after results of Rachitskaya’s left us stunned and assured that having hooded eyes is not the problem. It’s all about application, and being sure to check how things are looking straight on as you move forward with your routine.

To ensure you’re all equipped for an eyeshadow look that requires the use of multiple brushes, you should always have your own collection on hand. From angled shapes for sharp lines and fluffy blushes to help blend products all over the lid, this 5-piece Ultimate Eyes set by e.l.f Cosmetics has got you covered.

LEVEL UP your makeup with this quick & easy step! 🪄 This will lift the cheekbone, clean up the eye makeup, and give an overall polished effect 🥰 #makeup #eyeshadow #tutorial #makeuphacks #hack #paintedbyspencer

♬ original sound – SPENCER

One of our favourite eyeshadow techniques doesn’t involve a wash of glitter on the eyelids or a cut crease, rather, it’s all about what happens when you’ve completed the main look. This eyeshadow tutorial, posted Painted by Spencer on TikTok, has garnered over 10 million views since it was posted earlier this year, and it’s the finishing touch you didn’t know your glam has been missing all this while. In just a few seconds, this method creates the illusion of lifted cheekbones and pulls everything together with a more polished finish.

Taking an eyeshadow several shades lighter than your natural skin tone on a flat-ended brow brush, you’ll want to stamp it just beneath your winged liner (if you’re wearing it) or the outer edge of your eyeshadow look. “You’ll notice I’m taking that lower lash line and following it straight outwards,” says Spencer in his post. “I really like doing this because it lifts the cheekbone and highlights it but also cleans up the eye makeup.” Use your fingertips to soften up the edges to make sure its all blended out smoothly, and you’re all set.

The Anastasia Beverly Hills Soft Glam palette is one every glam gal should have on deck. Whether you’re a newbie looking to start easy or a pro who needs to travel light, this half-size Soft Glam II palette will make a divine addition to your collection. Plus, the shade “Tempura” is exactly what this lifting technique calls for.

How to Choose the Perfect Shade of Red Lipstick This Holiday Season https://fashionmagazine.com/sponsored-content/red-lipstick-holiday-revlon/ Fri, 08 Dec 2023 12:00:21 +0000 https://fashionmagazine.com/?p=483042 No matter your skin tone, hair colour or style, Revlon Canada has you covered with a huge range of red Super Lustrous Lipsticks. Here’s how to find the one for you.

The post How to Choose the Perfect Shade of Red Lipstick This Holiday Season appeared first on FASHION Magazine.

]]>

If there’s ever a time that calls for a red lip, it’s the holidays. Not only is red an appropriately festive colour, but it can also dress up just about any outfit—ideal when you’re heading from work to a party with no time to change.

But how do you find the right red lipstick for you? Not all are created equal, particularly when it comes to your skin tone, your hair colour and the lipstick’s finish. Luckily, Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick is available in 60 different shades with a wide selection of holiday-ready reds, from classic crimson to deep wine. Read on to find the one for you this holiday season.

Know your complexion and your undertones

If you’ve struggled to find a red lipstick you love, it might be because you haven’t yet found the right one for not only your skin tone but your undertones as well. To identify your undertones, look at the veins in your wrist. If they’re more blue or purple, your undertones are cool. If they look more green, your undertones are warm.

For deep skin with warm undertones, try a deep red hue with undertones that match yours, like Revlon Super Lustrous The Luscious Matte Lipstick in Show Off. If your skin has cool undertones, look for a classic red with a blue base like Super Red. Again, the undertones will match yours, and a bonus for everyone: blue-based red will make your teeth look extra white.

If you have medium-toned skin with warm undertones, most red lipsticks will flatter, from orange reds to true reds and deep wines. If you have medium-toned skin with cool undertones, try a red that veers slightly into pink territory, like Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Cherries in the Snow.

Olive complexions tend to have warmer undertones, so look for red lipstick that doesn’t fight with those undertones. That means yellow or orange-based reds are best. Try Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Fire and Ice.

For pale skin with cool undertones, a true-red lipstick with a blue base is the way to go. Revlon Super Lustrous The Luscious Matte Lipstick in Crushed Rubies is the perfect pick. You can also opt for a bolder, berry red like Wine With Everything (Creme) or Berry Rich. For pale skin with warm undertones, an orange-red is another bold choice that will pay off.

Don’t forget about your hair

When you’re choosing the best shade of red lipstick for you, the colour of your hair matters too. If your hair is dark brown or black and your complexion is warm, go for reds with brown bases like Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Spicy Cinnamon, which is pearlized, or Getting Serious, which has a matte finish. Shades with orange or coral in their names will also likely fit the bill. If your complexion is cool, try a berry-hued red like Berry Rich.

For blondes with warmer complexions, coral shades, orange-reds and copper reds, such as Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Fire and Ice or Kiss Me Coral, are ideal. Dusty pinks, plums and lighter reds with blue bases such as Wine With Everything (Pearl) are great for blondes with cool undertones. If your hair is red and you have a warm complexion, try an orange-red or any bright red shade like On Fire (matte) or Love That Red. For redheads with cool complexions, a blue-based red will look amazing, as will a dark berry or brick red like Ride or Die (matte) or Vampire Love.

Choose the right formula and finish

In the winter, the air tends to be drier thanks to the cranked-up heating. If your lips are dry, it’s important to choose a red lipstick that not only delivers on colour but also hydration. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick is infused with Vitamin E and avocado oil to nourish your lips. It is formulated with 80 per cent conditioning ingredients for a creamy, moisturized feel.

When it comes to the finish, you have options. If you love a velvety look, try one of the 19 matte finishes in the Super Lustrous The Luscious Mattes collection. Or, if you like a slight shimmer, go with one of the collection’s pearlescent red shades. If you want something right in the middle, this collection also has a variety of shades with a crème finish. To amp up the shine and sparkle, you can even add a gloss from the Revlon Super Lustrous The Gloss collection.

Can’t decide on just one shade? Now is the perfect time to give yourself the gift of variety with the Revlon Super Lustrous Holiday Kits which include three Super Lustrous Lipsticks or three Super Lustrous The Gloss lip glosses.

Whichever red lipstick you choose, make sure you feel like yourself, and you love the way you look. That confidence will carry you right through to 2024.

Click here to shop the Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick collection and use their virtual try-on feature to find your new favourite shade.

Bringing two of 2023’s biggest trends — red and ribbons — together, this graphic liner look is an ode to the past year of beauty. Ribbons are naturally evocative of the holiday season in all its gift-giving glory, and opting for a crimson-coloured liner is a chic way to try a festive eye look.

To replicate this look, draw on two “loops” and two “strings” just beneath the tail of your eyebrow to create your bow-tied ribbon. Then, connect it to a swipe of eyeliner on the lid, drawn on as you would a traditional winged eyeliner. For an extra dose of holiday spirit, pop a red rhinestone right over the centre of your ribbon.

Fenty Beauty’s Longwear Pencil Eyeliner in “Cherry Punk” is the one product you’ll need for your red ribbon liner. Creamy, long-wearing and smudge-resistant, this pencil is totally party-proof.

Twinkling stars may look impressive atop a Christmas tree, but they’ll look even better on your eyelids during festive soirée season. Keeping with classic holiday colour codes for this look, a pine green eyeshadow base will ensure that your stars pop.

If you’re up for a challenge (or if you’re an advanced artiste), you can go ahead and freehand your stars using a white eyeliner. Or, if you need a little extra guidance, head to your local craft store in search of star-shaped stencils that you can fill in overtop the green eyeshadow.

For your base eyeshadow shade, opt for a highly pigmented forest-green hue. Make Up For Ever’s Artist Color Eye Shadow in the shade “ME-302” is a peacock metallic pigment with a single-swipe colour payoff, and we love it for this look.

Put your artistry to the test with this crisp graphic liner look. Instead of drawing your eyeliner along the upper lashline as usual, take it up and over the eyelid just beneath the brow for a more experimental feel. Play with brush strokes of different lengths and thicknesses, topping it all off with miniature pearl and rhinestone accents for more of a high-glam look.

To recreate this look, you’ll need a highly pigmented, bright white eyeliner with a thin-tipped blush for flexibility and ease of use. NYX’s Vivid Matte Liquid Liner will get the job done.

Jewel tones? For the holidays? Groundbreaking. No, but really, we couldn’t resist the allure of this sultry eye look painted by Nikki Makeup on Bridgerton’s Simone Ashley.

So, how do you upgrade a signature smokey eye for a festive fete? You add a splash of emerald green eyeliner along the upper and lower lashlines for an eye-catching contrast against blackest-black eyeliner worn on the waterline.

Revlon’s “Jade” ColorStay Eyeliner Pencil is just what you’ll need to try this look. With up to 24 hours of glistening green wear, this baby won’t budge.

If it’s subtle glam that you seek, replicating Vanessa Hudgens’ neutral eye with rhinestone accents carried out by Tonya Brewer is the way to go. Start with a classic cut crease using matte eyeshadow shades, then darken up the look with a midnight black eyeliner along the waterline and a dramatic wing that extends to the tail end of your brow.

For the final touch, pack a cluster of mini rhinestone appliqués into the inner corner of the eye, and just above your winged liner, ’Tis the season to shimmer and shine.

When working with embellishments, nothing makes things easier than going the self-adhesive route. Amazon is filled with rhinestone options like these that’ll stick to your lids with no glue, and no hassle.

“I’ve realized that education is my sweet spot. People seem to like the way I break things down,” says makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes. “I make it easy for them to wrap their heads around concepts so they can be successful with the makeup look they’re doing.” Indeed, the England-born, New York-raised makeup artist is clear, concise, and almost impossibly helpful in the way she explains makeup tips.

Hughes is calling from her home in Brooklyn, and her face appears on my screen while she’s mid-makeup application, applying the finishing touches to her radiant skin (courtesy of her very first product launch, KJH.Brand’s Hyper Shine High Lite Kit, made up of an illuminating pigment available in four shades, a clear serum and a brush) first thing on a cold Monday morning.

We chat about makeup (duh) and I tell her I’m having trouble with the lasting power of the cream and sheer tint products in my routine. “I need to ask some questions,” she says. “First, what concealer are you using?” I tell her and after a second of rustling sounds behind the camera, Hughes holds up a handful of products, including the very concealer I’ve just named.

And we’re off. Suddenly she is swatching and blending, demonstrating each step on her face and on the back of her hands as she goes.

A post shared by KATIE JANE HUGHES (@katiejanehughes)

“The reason I wanted to create a brand in the first place was because not a lot of brands are actually educating consumers on how to use their products,” says Hughes. “There are so many nuances to why makeup works and doesn’t work. Every brand is like, ‘Here’s a mascara. You already know how to put this on, don’t you?’ But do people really know? Like, if someone’s mascara is transferring under their eyes, is it the mascara that’s the problem? Or is it the eye cream they’re using?”

Ironically, Hughes says her “lightbulb moment” occurred when someone sent her a DM asking for a tutorial on how to put mascara on. “I replied and said, ‘Wait, what do you mean?’” laughs Hughes. “They were like, ‘You know, how to really put mascara on. How do you get to the root of the lash? How do you make them fan out?’”

The encounter was a reminder that when it comes to makeup (and most other things) there truly are no dumb questions. Her willingness to roll up her sleeves and really meet people where they are in their makeup routines and knowledge level — so that she can help them determine their best course of action — has undoubtedly contributed to her impressive social media following (884,000 on Instagram and 180,000 on TikTok).

Hughes’ approach to showcasing even the most editorial makeup looks and techniques is refreshingly patient and informative. Remember your favourite high school math teacher who somehow explained calculus in a way that made it just click, after no one else could? Hughes is that teacher in the world of makeup. “It’s really humbling that people have a certain level of comfort with me,” says Hughes. “I think education and helping people really understand how to use a product is advocating for them.”

A post shared by KATIE JANE HUGHES (@katiejanehughes)

And if you’ve come to Hughes’ page for the makeup tutorials, you’ve probably stayed for the playfulness and overall positive vibes. This is at least in part because, like many beauty industry pros, Hughes’ own history with makeup began with her mother. A stay-at-home mom during the week and a singer on weekends, Hughes’ mom would transform every Thursday night.

“Watching that transformation from her being mom, into this glamazon wearing a beautiful bold red lip — perfectly applied without a mirror, by the way — loads of bronzer, and the blackest, thickest mascara… it was just very iconic,” she says. “I understood from a young age how makeup can transform and completely change your mood, your energy, everything.”

Cloud skin. Balletcore makeup. Coquette beauty. Today’s biggest beauty trends feature blurred edges and cotton-candy hues. They swap the eclectic for ethereal, the defined for dreamy. The end result? Looks that could have been plucked straight from a Sofia Coppola film. And at the centre of this romance renaissance is pastel makeup — think mint green, baby pink, lavender and powder blue. But after a decade of refining our razor-sharp winged-liner application and nailing sculpted contour, perhaps our soft-pastel technique could use some perfecting. After all, we’re not talking about an annual spring fling with pink blush. Pastels for winter? Groundbreaking.

“We’re seeing a shift away from makeup defined by seasons and structure,” says makeup artist Veronica Chu. “When it comes to wearing pastels, look for products that are long-lasting. Because these are softer shades, you want them to last and not fade throughout the day. Eyeshadow primers are a great way to ensure this.” To pull off the look, Chu suggests sticking to one or two pastel eyeshadows at a time. “These soft shades can easily blend together and turn into a different colour entirely.”

A common concern with pastel makeup is how quickly and easily it can go from soft to juvenile. (Remember your first makeup kit from the toy store? Pastels galore.) To ensure that the look is elevated, not elementary, opt for matte finishes, says Violette Serrat, a makeup artist and Guerlain’s creative director of makeup. “A shimmery pastel can veer toward childish territory, while a matte finish looks more mature.” For some contrast in textures, opt for ultra-dewy skin. And Serrat recommends finishing any pastel eye makeup look with mascara. “Otherwise, you can erase your features,” she says. “So, black mascara — always.”

Chu cautions that “pastels with shimmer can accentuate fine lines or wrinkles and may actually make your eyes appear smaller or create a shape you may not desire. Poppier pastels with no shimmer will look cleaner and more modern.” And because no makeup look is complete without blush, both pros suggest (what else?) pink blush as the cherry on top of your sweet-as-pie look. “I love pink blush and pastel eyeshadow together,” says Chu. “There’s something very angelic about the pairing.”

Shop these pastel-hued eyeshadows and eyeliners to add some softness to your look this winter.

For makeup enthusiasts, Halloween is like the Olympics. It’s like that quote from Mean Girls as told by Cady Heron (a.k.a Lindsay Lohan) where she describes Halloween night as the one night a year that girls can dress however they want to, and no one else can say anything about it. And that applies to makeup, too. It’s a time to flex your creative muscles and be as experimental as possible—free of judgment.

These artistic masterpieces can range from all-out gore to all-out glam, and both can be equally as impressive. This year, we’ve scoured Instagram and TikTok to find Halloween makeup looks that both pros and beginners can take a swing at. From pop culture nods to Beyoncé and Wednesday Addams to elevated spins on classic villains, we present to you ten of the best Halloween makeup looks you’ll want to recreate this year.

Who said ghosts have to be scary? This Halloween, up your glam game with a pearl-encrusted ghoulish look. If it’s been a while since you’ve experimented with makeup beyond the basics, here’s your chance to put your artistry to the test.

Once you’ve sketched out the base of your ghost on top of your eyelid and underneath the eye, elevate plain face paint by topping it off with miniature pearls to help fill in the figure of your phantom. For the eyes and mouth of your ghost, add on black rhinestones to double down on your commitment to creating a glamorous ghoul.

Here’s a Halloween hack for you: eliminate the stress of individually gluing on face gems by shopping *self-adhesive* options! These flat black pearl stickers from Amazon will make recreating this glam ghost look a breeze.

Vintage Barbie

It’s safe to say that 2023 was the year of Barbie. That said, we have no doubt that classic Barbie costumes paired with hot-pink pouts will be in abundance come Halloween night, but we’re feeling something a little more retro for the occasion. Vintage Barbie, perhaps?

Inspired by the original “No. 1” Barbie doll from 1959, this look replicates the glam of the era with a wash of blue eyeshadow over the lids and a timeless red lip. If you’re not one for Halloween glam that’s too spooky or abstract, retro Barbie is your gal.

This just-dropped multi-stick by Sephora Collection in the shade “Baby Blue Matte” is exactly what you’ll need to recreate vintage Barbie’s ’60s-inspired blue eyeshadow look. While this product can be used as a water- and transfer-proof eyeliner, it also blends out seamlessly into a long-lasting eyeshadow.

We’re all about this cutesy clown glam that still serves Halloween, but keeps it chic. Pops of purple on the eyelids, green in the centre and orange in the inner corner maintain the classic colour palette of the season, while a rim of hot pink around the eye adds a feminine touch.

Taking things one step further, star details are added and the lip is ever-so-slightly exaggerated to top off that clown-esque look. If “Circus” by Britney Spears was a makeup look, we think this would be it.

Going the vampire route? This look gives a whole new meaning to the term “just bitten.” Swapping out fake blood for rhinestones, this glam still maintains a “bloody” illusion while presenting more of an editorial edge.

While it may take a little (or a lot!) more time than others to perfect, the satisfaction of pulling off an artistically intricate look like this one will be totally rewarding. And we’ll let you in on a little secret: it doesn’t have to be perfect! We’re sure real vampires don’t have a method to their madness when hunger strikes.

Julia Fox

If you’ve just finished reading Down the Drain and you’ve comteplated going as Julia Fox for Halloween, consider this your sign to do so. It’s always fun to merge pop culture with makeup, especially when recreating a look as easily identifiable as Fox’s iconic “fox eye.”

Fox may have dialled down her signature inky eyeliner look in favour of razor-thin brows lately, but we’ll forever remember her by this blocky liner look. The best part? You’ll only need one or two makeup products to recreate it, and anyone can do it!

Photography Courtesy of Byredo

Outline your “fox eye” with eyeliner to create a crisp, clean edge. Using a thick jumbo-sized eyeliner like Byredo’s Kajal Pencil in “Kali Kali Black” (as seen in the TikTok above!) will make it easier to colour in your eyelid once your outline has been drawn.

A beauty hack and a Halloween makeup hack in one? That’s what we like to see. Freehanding graphic designs can already be difficult as is, but the stakes are even higher on Halloween night— or so we thought!

Earlier this year, we were all obsessing over Disney’s remake of The Little Mermaid and headed into the summer with the mermaidcore trend in mind. For Halloween, might we suggest a slightly darker aquatic alternative?

Able to lure in listeners with the sweet sounds of their voices, mythical sirens are Halloween’s answer to the mermaid-core trend. Best paired with the “wet look” hairstyle, this glam incorporates pearls, rhinestones, drawn-on scales and heaps of glitter. Pro tip: use fishnet tights to help mimic that fish scale look!

Though it’s been nearly a year since the release of Netflix’s Wednesday series, this brooding youngster is still proving to be everyone’s favourite member of the Addams family. Consider the Wednesday makeup look an even smokier, more deliberately dishevelled version of the already messy smokey eye. In Wednesday’s world, dark circles are encouraged. In fact, they’re enhanced with eyeshadow. And a moody mauve lip is essential.

Similar to the siren, this makeup look involves the use of fishnets to enhance that “scaly” illusion and adds extra dimension to the perimeter of the face. Glimmers of green and gold shine on the lids, while an emerald lip ties the look together.

Every so often, a select makeup item goes from buzzy product to a full-blown beauty sensation, hailed for its mass appeal and groundbreaking wearability. Such is the case for the Clinique Black Honey lipstick, a softer and more wearable take on the best black lipsticks. It has transcended the barriers of #BeautyTok and completely entranced the internet over the past year.

As a self-proclaimed makeup skeptic, I set out to find out why.

What is Clinique Black Honey?

Lauded for its ability to complement all skin tones, the cult-favourite lipstick stands out for its universal appeal. Though it has a deep purple colour in the tube, it looks entirely unique once you put it on.

With a glossy lightweight consistency, it’s less like a lipstick and more like a layer-friendly balm that, as the brand claims, looks different (but great) on everyone. Ingredients like castor oil and carnauba waxes leave the lips feeling moisturized, and its ultra-sheer finish can be worn alone or layered with any colour of your choice.

How to wear Clinique Black Honey

Thanks to its chameleon-like colour application, there’s no “right” way to wear Clinique Black Honey lipstick, and that’s part of its appeal. Upon first swipe, it offers a subtle deep mauve and deliciously shiny finish.

During the day, a single layer keeps lips hydrated and adds a hue of autumnal warmth. Apply it more generously for a vampier effect at night. If you really want to drive home the dark theme, try pairing it with the Clinique Black Honey Pop gloss.

My Clinique Black Honey review

The first thing I noticed about this lipstick is how truly easy it is to use. With a transparent pigment, it glides on seamlessly, creating a subtle tinted burgundy gloss. Because it’s so sheer and buildable, there are fewer chances of creating a smudgy mess that spills onto your skin.

As someone who is very pale, not all lip colours work on me (nudes are a no-no; I learned that the hard way). But I was surprised to see that this pretty plum lipstick accentuated my features instead of clashing with them. And based off the reviews from those with darker complexions, this assessment is shared across varying skin tones.

It wasn’t long before I started treating this as a lip balm and putting it on with reckless abandon. From public transit to work events, I consistently re-applied the Clinique Black Honey lipstick without needing a mirror — and it looked great every time. Through it all, I found the hydration to be deep and long-lasting, with my lips feeling nourished for hours, even after the colour itself waned.

If you love it, you can find all the nourishing ingredients and buildable wearability in Clinique’s other offering, a light blush hue called Pink Honey. But really, we like the lipstick in Black Honey the best.

Pros

 • Deeply moisturizing
 • Easy to apply on-the-go
 • Wear its own or layered with any other colour
 • Sleek silver packaging
 • Allergy-tested and fragrance-free for those with sensitivities

Cons

 • It’s worth noting that because it’s designed to look different on all skin tones, it may not look exactly how you’re expecting it to after you apply it onto your lips
 • It’s very transparent, so you’ll need to keep re-applying pretty consistently for a darker look

Where to buy Clinique Black Honey lipstick

Clinique Black Honey regularly sells out, so I recommend acting fast. (Pro tip: To try it for yourself, head to Clinique’s website and select the virtual “try it on” feature.)

For the price of a lipstick with the nutrient-rich properties of a lip treatment, I’d say that all in all, this viral product lives up to the hype.

Every corner of social media has key players who have mastered the art of the shock factor. On #BeautyTok, no one does it better than Meredith Duxbury.

Her videos are hard to miss, even harder to scroll past, and are centred on her signature makeup-application technique: a very heavy-handed approach — and that’s putting it lightly — that has helped her rack up over 18.5 million followers on TikTok (and three million on Instagram and YouTube combined).

She applies no fewer than 10 pumps of foundation all over her face (including her eyelids and lips) and then, using a circular motion, rubs in the thick coat of makeup with her hands as if it were the most hydrating moisturizer in the world. And then comes concealer, contour, brow gel, blush, eyeshadow and mascara — the works. She often lip-synchs to a popular song throughout the video. Even if you’re not on #BeautyTok, this is probably starting to ring a bell.

“I probably use 25 to 30 products each time,” says Duxbury over the phone from New York City. “It depends on how intricate the look is.” Ah, yes, the look — the final result after a small mountain of products have been applied and blended. After all is said and done, Duxbury’s makeup looks, well, normal. In fact, it looks great.

Does it look like a full face of makeup? Sure. But it’s certainly no more extreme than the full beat that’s popular on TikTok.

So why the dozens of steps if the final product could probably be achieved with far less? Duxbury insists she’s been doing her makeup like this for years; she began wearing heavy, full-coverage foundation to cover her freckles, a former insecurity of hers. “I started noticing that my beauty sponge was absorbing a lot of product,” she says. “When I’d use my hands, the foundation would melt really nicely into my skin.”

The technique got her noticed on TikTok, and she quickly skyrocketed. By December 2020, she had built up a following of one million. That month, she started #TheFoundationChallenge, inviting others on TikTok to try her technique. By January 2021, she had grown her following to a whopping seven million. Today, she is the second-most-followed TikTok beauty content creator, and her most-watched video currently has more than 135 million views.

Photography by Stepan Filenko

With this overnight virality came an obsession with creating her next hit. “At the time, I was really stressed,” Duxbury confesses. “I put so much pressure on myself, and I’d be so upset if I made a video that didn’t get, like, 30 million views. I’d be up all night checking my numbers; I couldn’t sleep.”

These days, she says, she doesn’t get sucked into the cycle: “The key to going viral is not doing something just because you think it’s gonna go viral; you have to really love it. The great thing about TikTok’s algorithm is that it gives everybody a fair chance. You don’t have to have connections or a ton of existing followers to go viral.”

Another reason she prefers the video app over others is because it aligns with her style of working and communicating. “I have ADHD, and the way I work is very fast-paced,” she says. “I lose interest in things unless they’re quick and to the point, so with TikTok being such short-form content, it allows me to get out what I need to say in 15 to 30 seconds.”

Duxbury’s most recent project is a limited-edition collaboration with Morphe (featuring two palettes, a multi-purpose gloss, a lip liner and lip glaze duo and a brow gel and brush), although she hopes to launch her own stand-alone brand one day and become a permanent fixture in the beauty world — an industry she says has been “very welcoming” to her and her controversial technique.

“That’s the beauty of makeup and why I think people get into the industry — there are no rules or limits; everyone feels free to do what they want,” she says. But when that day comes, don’t expect a minimalist no-makeup makeup offering. Duxbury says that doing natural makeup doesn’t challenge her brain. “With these complex, intricate looks, you need a steady hand, the lines have to be crisp and there’s blending — there’s just a lot to think about,” she explains. “I could do natural makeup with my eyes closed, but with full glam, you have to really pay attention.”

After decades of being pushed aside for other cheek enhancers like contour cream, highlighter and bronzer, blush is back in its rightful spot in a makeup routine: front and centre. “Gen Z has fully embraced glowing skin and makeup that enhances natural features,” says makeup artist Lilly Keys, whose client roster includes A-listers Olivia Rodrigo, Addison Rae, Jenna Ortega and Emma Chamberlain. “Blush is the easiest way to achieve a healthy, youthful glow.”

RELATED: 14 Lipstick Shades Our Editors Can’t Live Without

This isn’t the makeup category’s first rodeo, though. Back in the ’80s, blush reigned supreme. The decade was known for a certain “just ran an entire marathon” flush, and It girls like Grace Jones and Debbie Harry were famous for their overly rouged cheeks. But once the over-the-top decadence of the ’80s passed, the ’90s and aughts ushered in more neutral tones. Our rose-coloured glasses came off, and beauty trends were all about Kardashian contouring and cheekbones so defined it seemed like they might be visible from outer space. During the rise of Instagram, blush was reduced to an afterthought, as more dramatic makeup looks (like sharp winged liner, bold brows and, of course, a face full of contour) became king. And their seemingly unrelenting reign lasted for more than a decade.

But with the beginning of the pandemic came an understandable desire to bring colour and radiance back into our faces. Forget the chalky-grey undertones of contour creams; daily Zoom calls required rosy, glowing cheeks. Then in September 2020, Selena Gomez launched her cosmetics line, Rare Beauty, and released the now-viral Soft Pinch Liquid Blush. The ultra-pigmented products started making waves almost immediately. “I was working at Sephora when Rare Beauty launched,” says digital creator and makeup artist Sean Anthony (@Seananthonyv), who now shares makeup tutorials with his over 900,000 TikTok followers. “It was like nothing we’d ever seen before.” Shades were flying off the shelves and selling out for long stretches of time — in stark contrast to just a few years prior. “When I started working at Sephora in 2016, many cream blushes were being phased out,” presumably due to a lack of consumer interest, says Anthony.

A post shared by Sean Anthony (@seananthonyv)

Today, blush is a must-have makeup product, with brands like Charlotte Tilbury, Nudestix and Saie seeing huge success with cream and liquid formulas over the past two years. According to the global payment and shopping service app Klarna, there was a 161 per cent increase in Canadian sales of liquid blush between November 2022 and April 2023. More specifically, there was a whopping 1,408 per cent increase in pink-blush sales in Canada between April 2022 and April 2023. And who can deny the chokehold the colour pink has had on us for the past several years? From Glossier’s millennial pink a handful of years ago to Barbie pink today, the fashion and beauty industries’ colour of the decade is still going strong. La vie en rose, indeed.

Cream and liquid blushes deliver healthy-looking, luminous skin that’s beloved by makeup-savvy Gen Z, the driving force behind many of today’s big makeup trends. And unlike their powder-blush predecessor, these creamy formulas are loved for their foolproof application and youthful glow. Powder formulas have no place in the recipe for radiant “glazed doughnut” skin. Keys stockpiles versatile creams in her kit because they can be applied on the fly, using just her fingers. “When you warm up the product, it sinks into the skin for a dewy, sexy, flushed appearance,” she says.

For the generation that values authenticity and individuality above all else, another reason blush is enticing is that its purpose isn’t to cover up, conceal or carve out angles and shapes that aren’t naturally there. It’s your natural flush — but better. “Blush encourages people to embrace their own unique beauty,” says Keys. “And it’s a confidence booster.” For Anthony, part of the appeal of cream blush is its popularity within the Korean and Japanese beauty communities, both of which have a major influence on North American trends. He recalls that when he was growing up in the Philippines, blush was a makeup product everyone wore, even during the contouring craze in the West. “The routine in the Philippines has long been blush and lip tint — that’s it.”

Meanwhile, TikTok is spearheading North America’s blush comeback. Creators who feature traffic-generating products like Rare Beauty’s Soft Pinch blushes and Charlotte Tilbury’s Beauty Light Wand are seeing big numbers as a result. Currently, the hashtag #blush has a staggering 4.8 billion views on the video platform, with #RareBeautyBlush clocking in 1.5 billion eyeballs. In fact, many of the makeup trends that have taken hold thanks to TikTok have been blush-centric. (Think of the recent “sunburn makeup” and “cold girl makeup.”)

“I love cream blushes because they give skin a more natural look,” says beauty and lifestyle creator Jawaria Khalid, who boasts over 1.2 million followers on her TikTok account, @Jawarshere. Blush has always played a key role in Khalid’s content, including her popular “Get Ready With Me” videos.

“I always include a clip where I’m putting on blush because it’s the most hyped part of my makeup routine,” she says. “People know me as a blush girl and look forward to seeing different types of blush on my skin tone.” Anthony says he also sees a noticeable boost in views when he posts about blush, specifically the Rare Beauty formulas, even though the product is no longer a new launch. “I find that featuring those blushes is a no-brainer if I need a boost in views,” he says. “People get so invested when they see that packaging.”

Now that it has conquered contouring and taken over TikTok, what’s next for cream blush? Hopefully more inclusivity and shade offerings for deeper skin tones. “For the longest time, it was hard for people with melanated skin tones to find blush that showed up on their skin,” says Anthony. Earlier this year, makeup brand Juvia’s Place launched an ultra-pigmented cream formula in deep shades, like burgundy and burnt red, that quickly went viral on TikTok, signalling that the appetite for cream blush is still growing. And even though the beauty industry is famously fast-paced and fickle when it comes to trends, it appears that blush has some serious staying power this time around.

Decades of questionable makeup trends have come and gone, but at the end of it all — lipstick has never failed us. Whether it be a tried-and-true shade of classic red or an understated nude hue, a single tube of lipstick holds the power to transform your entire attitude. With National Lipstick Day swiftly approaching (on July 29th), we can think of no better time to show some love to our ride-or-dies. Plucked from the purses and vanities of FASHION‘s very own editors, scroll on to shop a curated selection of our favourite lipsticks — bare, bold, and all.

“I keep a lot of moisturizing neutrals in various rooms around the house because I hate the feeling of dry lips. One of my faves is Brun Yachting, a limited edition shade from the Rouge Hermes spring ’23 collection. It’s just a hint of colour — like my own lips, only shinier.”

With the matching liner, it really gives the ‘your lips but poutier’ look that TikTok says it does.”

“By a conservative estimate, I own 70 red lipsticks. I get at least 10 compliments every time I wear this luscious medium-red shade by Givenchy, with a satin finish that isn’t the least bit drying. So naturally, I continue to reach for it — it’s just math.”

“Normally my (totally arbitrary and based solely on preference) rule about lip products is to reach for a matte finish when I’m wearing red lipstick and go for a gloss when I’m wearing a nude shade. However, when the Armani Beauty Lip Maestro Satin Lipstick shades came out this past spring, all rules went out the window. I’m obsessed with shade Weekend Getaway, a really pretty and easy-to-wear nude/beige. The formula is described as a ‘watery vibrant lip colour inspired by the skin-on-skin satin feel.’ It’s a pretty wash of colour with a satin finish—so not quite matte but definitely not glossy, either—and the comfort of a balm. Perfect for everyday wear.”

I love the sleek black packaging, the sturdiness of the cap (it won’t fall off in your bag and ruin your purse lining — promise), and the finish, wear, and feel of the lipstick. I often reach for the shade Classic, a true red with blue undertones. These days, it seems like every product is described as buildable, but this one truly delivers. When you dab it on, you get a bright, sheer, popsicle-like stain. If you swipe it on, you’re left with a perfect red with a matte finish. And if you swipe it on some more (see: buildable!) you get a stunning burgundy shade that’s just as comfortable as it was two or three swipes ago. And while the colour isn’t completely smudge-proof, it fades evenly, so as the hours pass, the lipstick gradually transforms back into previous stages (burgundy>red>satin) rather than leaving you with a patchy mess.”

“My lips are naturally quite a bit darker than the rest of my complexion, so typical ‘nude’ shades tend to look a little chalky on me. Instead, I try to neutralize the natural shade of my lips (and make them cohesive with the rest of my makeup) by applying my cheek product to my lips as well, using a product like Milk Makeup’s Lip + Cheek Cream Blush. It’s subtle, but it prevents my lips from overpowering the rest of the look.”

“As a reformed matte-lipstick lover, my first question when trying any new lipstick is, ‘How will this make my lips feel?’ I’m no longer impressed by claims of waterproofness or hours of wear time — I’m looking for something that will make my lips look and feel happy, healthy, and hydrated, like this Lancôme Liquid Lipstick in the shade Rose Fugace.”

“As a committed nude lipstick wearer through and through, my purse is home to anywhere from approximately two to five nude lip products at any given moment. And although they may all look the ‘same’ to the naked eye (they’re not!), I’ve got my go-tos. My ideal nude lipstick is soft beige in tone and pairs well with a brown liner — but also glides over lips like a balm while delivering a swipe of long-wearing colour like a classic lipstick. In other words, it’s Chanel’s Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in the shade 206 Illusion.”

“On the rare occasion that I do depart from my beloved nude lipsticks, I take it all the way to the dark side and opt for a vampy shade of deep, chocolate brown. As far as lipstick is concerned, MAC Cosmetics has never done me wrong with their creamy, full-coverage formulas and high colour payoff — which is why I love this matte Antique Velvet shade. And can we just take a moment for that iconic MAC vanilla lipstick scent?”

UPDATE: On June 16, Doja Cat released “Attention,” a new track that leans into the singer’s reputation for viral beauty transformations. The lyrics quip at those who call her “ugly,” and the music video shows her covered in red paint, one of her most shocking looks yet. With this release, Doja Cat cryptically announced on Twitter that “Scarlet is here,” which is speculated to be a new alter ego. On Instagram, her latest beauty look shows her with blood-shot eyes, facial piercings and a decidedly edgier aesthetic. With her fourth studio album slated for later this year, Doja Cat’s penchant for transformation remains front and centre of her artistry.

A post shared by Doja Cat (@dojacat)

When it comes to makeup, Doja Cat is a woman of the world. She had her E-girl phase. She long embraced an alien aesthetic. Now, after shaving her head and eyebrows, she has entered an “I’ll try anything” era. And we’re all better for it.

To mark the start of Paris haute couture fashion week on January 23, the pop star further cemented herself as a boundary-breaking beauty icon — no catwalk necessary. Sitting front row at the Schiaparelli Spring 2023 show, Doja Cat was adorned head to toe in ruby-red Swarovski crystals. The look — which reportedly took nearly five hours to complete and involved 30,000 hand-applied gems — was created by famed makeup artist Pat McGrath, and speaks to the Planet Her singer’s multidimensional beauty prowess.

Just two days later, Doja Cat attended Viktor & Rolf show in Paris on January 25, wearing an androgynous look with false eyelashes as facial hair. Later the same day, she arrived at the Valentino show with a completely new aesthetic.

This is not the first time Doja Cat has made the front row of fashion week her creative playground. If history is any indication, it also certainly won’t be the last.

Recall, back in September 2022, when Doja Cat (quite literally) went out shining to commemorate the end of Fashion Month. At the Awake Mode show on October 4, the 27-year-old stepped out with her skin covered in a glimmering layer of gold thanks to makeup artist Laurel Charleston.

In fact, while attending events across the city, Doja Cat sported variations of sculptural eyebrows, body paint and intergalactic illustrations. To attend the Mônot show on October 1, her face was coated in white, with dark blue contouring and bright red lipstick. On her forearms, black designs mimicked the look of opera gloves.

Earlier that same day, she attended the Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood show with a completely different ensemble — because, of course. Thin spikes sat in place of eyebrows and dark lightning-bolt eyeliner crept onto her nose.

As the week went on, her looks got more shocking — hence the aforementioned gold finale. For the Givenchy show, makeup artist Sophia Sinot gave her smudged black checkerboard-design lips with studs for eyebrows. To attend a party hosted by Beyoncé, the singer’s whole face became an optical illusion thanks to an expertly-placed swirling line. “After I was finished she asked me if I could sign her neck like an artist signs their work when they’re finished,” Charleston wrote on Twitter. Herein lies the genius of Doja Cat’s maquillage mantra.

Think about it: for the Grammy-winning singer, makeup is yet another way to perform. And lately, she’s been leaning heavily into this aspect of her artistry. After shaving her head and eyebrows on Instagram Live over the summer, Doja Cat has used her face as an unrestricted canvas. More and more, the singer goes against the beauty grain — from painting her own detailed facial designs to sporting a cow pattern on her head. With each new wonderfully weird look, she advocates for beauty as a means of art instead of a boring background feature.

These days, show-stopping style statements are hard to come by. With minimalist makeup routines reigning supreme and red-carpet looks often blandly replicating the runway, there’s a lack of risk-taking among celebrity beauty. Doja Cat, on the other hand, uses makeup as an accessory that’s up for interpretation and meant to garner a reaction.

Case in point: for the Balenciaga show back in October, she sported an eyeshadow look that resembled a black eye and split lip. “I think people are going to love it,” she told Vogue. “And I think that, as they do, people are also not going to love it.” But either way, Doja Cat doesn’t seem to care. The thing is, this subversive style isn’t supposed to appeal to everyone. Who can forget when Lady Gaga wore her meat dress to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards? She was ridiculed at the time, but it’s since gone down as one of the biggest moments in recent fashion history.

Of course, an important element of any memorable ensemble is the personality behind it. Doja Cat stands out not only because of the masterful creations on her skin, but the passionate energy that she carries with each design.

As we head into a new Fashion Month, we can surely expect even more surprising surrealist Doja Cat statements. By pushing against beauty boundaries and sporting thought-provoking paintings on her face, the star’s makeup aesthetic continues to be unapologetically unique. And isn’t that what art is all about? In the immortal words of TikTok: I don’t want to be pretty, I want to be iconic. If that’s Doja Cat’s mission, consider it accomplished.

As beauty trends ebb and flow, we put our beloved brows through a lot.

They’ve endured being overplucked, brushed up for maximum fullness, and bleached to a barely-there state. But our latest obsession is somehow even more extra than the rest. Enter: brow gems.

RELATED: The Beauty Hacks I’ve Learned on TikTok This Month

Consider this brow look (which has appeared everywhere from Peter Do and Chanel runways to Lady Gaga’s Instagram feed) a more editorial extension of “browscaping” — the trend in which brows serve as the foundation for creative expression, making them the focal point of a makeup look. And as far as experimentation goes, an eyebrow chock-full of brow gems surely says something.

Whether you’re preparing for Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour, a Pride party, or you’re still in your Euphoria era, here are four ways to bling out your brows using rhinestones (and perhaps a steady hand).

Fake a bleached brow

@katiefarhood

♬ Banana Shake – aamiira

Not willing to take the bleached brow plunge? Skip the commitment and mimic that bleach-blonde look by using champagne-coloured rhinestones, like these ones you can pick up on Amazon or at your local craft store. First, create a barrier between your real brows and the gemstones by spackling on a thick layer of stick glue. Next, use a coat of your favourite brush-on lash glue to act as an adhesive before you apply the gems on top of your brows. Taking advice from makeup artist Katie Farhood who posted this look on TikTok, fill in any remaining gaps with a brush of fine gold glitter.

Try Renaissance-tour-ready diamanté brows

@charhairchar

Replying to @Martha Jane Tierney rhinestone eyebrow info in 1 min 13 seconds 😇 🪩 #renaissancetour

♬ original sound – char 💋

It’s an unspoken rule that silver chrome is part of Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour dress code, and this diamanté brow look by TikTok user @charhairchar is sure to elevate your futuristic ensembles. Once you’ve completed your brow routine as usual, @charhairchar recommends using a rhinestone picker to help pick up your gems, so that your placement can be as precise as possible. Grab your silver rhinestones using the tool and apply a light dab of lash glue to the bottom of the gem. Allow the glue to get tacky and then proceed to place each brow gem wherever you’d like. If this look isn’t giving Alien Superstar, we don’t know what is.

Build a new brow

Why go through the hassle of trimming, sculpting, or filling in your precious brows to achieve a new shape when you can simply fake it with gems? On TikTok, professional makeup artist @laramiemakeup began this look with a blocked-out brow base so that a new brow shape can be drawn on. The shape in question? An ultra-thin, blinged-out 90s brow made up of multicoloured rhinestones in varying shapes and sizes.

Add a rainbow tail

This Pride month, upgrade your glam with this rainbow brow tail look posted by TikToker Craig Hamilton. Using a thick concealer (like Tarte’s Shape Tape) and glue to carry out the aforementioned brow-blocking technique, you’ll want to conceal the tail end of your brow so you’ve got a blank canvas to apply your rhinestones. Use a pair of tweezers (or your rhinestone picker!) to help apply your miniature brow gems in a rainbow-coloured sequence and you’re all set.

1970s, ’80s and ’90s kids will recall that there was nothing more electrifying than the novelty of slipping on their mood ring each morning and watching its stone change hues before their very eyes. Today, Gen Z has discovered the wonder of colour-changing products via makeup — an extension of the customization trend that has permeated the beauty industry over the past several years. Colour-changing makeup products (typically lipstick and blush) are pH-activated and powered by a chemical reaction between the product’s ingredients and the wearer’s skin. What could be more customized than that?

RELATED: The Spring 2023 Beauty Trends to Wear Now

“pH is the measure of how acidic an environment is,” explains Alessandro Mendes, vice-president of research and innovation at Cosmetica Laboratories Inc. in Toronto. The level of acidity in anything, from our skin to a swimming pool, can be determined using the scientific scale of pH, which ranges from 0 to 14 (with 0 being the most acidic and 14 being the most basic). Healthy skin naturally stabilizes around the 5 to 5.5 mark.

What causes the colour-changing phenomenon in makeup products is the interaction between skin and an ingredient called bromo acid dye, a type of pigment commonly used in these products. The pH level of the skin that this dye is exposed to upon application determines the shade.

What causes the colour-changing phenomenon in makeup products is the interaction between skin and an ingredient called bromo acid dye.

“When you have a product that looks transparent or translucent in its packaging, for instance, it means that the level of pigment we can see with our eyes is very low,” says Mendes. “The reason we don’t see it until it’s applied is that the pH of the product is higher than the skin’s level of 5.5.” When the two come into contact, the pH levels react to each other, forming a shade that’s unique to the wearer.

Since the pH of everyone’s skin is generally around the same level, getting different hues from person to person relies on a few other factors, too. These include complexion shade, where on the face the product is applied (for example, the pH of the skin on our lips is higher than on the rest of our face) and even how dry or hydrated the skin is. While the differences in the shades and intensity of pH-adapting makeup from person to person may be subtle to the naked eye, as far as unique-to-each-wearer makeup goes, colour-changing products may just be customizable beauty’s final frontier.

Below, discover some of the hottest shade-changing lip products to join in on the fun.

We’re finally emerging from the depths of a long, grey winter, folks. And with hints of spring in the air, that means we can dream of warmer, more colourful times ahead. With the Spring 2023 fashion shows in our rearview and photo galleries full of inspo at our fingertips, it’s time to start dipping our toes into sunnier looks — starting with our makeup. Because if we can’t store our fuzzy hats just yet, why not complement them with a flush of rosy blush or a swipe of colourful eyeliner?

RELATED: The Beauty Hacks I’ve Learned on TikTok and Instagram This Month

From pops of colour to sparkling bedazzlements, the top spring 2023 beauty trends are fresh and fun. Discover them all.

Draped blush

Blush draping, whereby you swathe your temples and cheeks in bright and beautiful shades of pink or red, first became popular in the ’70s. Since then, it’s been worn by everyone from Rihanna at the 2017 Met Gala to Arianna Grande this past summer. Thanks to Aliétte, Christian Cowan and Etro, the beauty trend will continue right on into 2023.

The wet look

Would it even be Fashion Month without models who look like they walked off the set of Flashdance? This season at Atlein, Giambattista Valli, Balmain and Dries Van Noten (not to mention Marni, Proenza Schouler and Molly Goddard), dry hair was out in favour of slicked-back knots, damp finger waves and straight-up stringy manes.

Embellishment

Glitter: it’s the ultimate pick-me-up — and this season’s key makeup artist’s all agree. From the sparkly brows at Peter Do to the metallic-and-sequin lids at Giorgio Armani, a little bit of embellishment is always a good idea.

Bright mattes

Tuck your nude eyeshadow palette back in your makeup bag, because Spring 2023 is all about brights. Purple, green, orange, yellow and blue are all up for grabs, as are colourful wings, blocked shadow and delicate accenting. Do it your way! Just make sure the finish is matte — à la Stella Jean, Prabal Gurung, Paul & Joe and DSquared2 — and the colour is Day-Glo.

Clean skin

This season’s skin looks just like… skin. There’s no heavy coverage, no dewy shine or flat matte texture. If we didn’t know better, we’d think the models at Erdem, Missoni, Brandon Maxwell and Altuzarra weren’t wearing any makeup at all.

Sprays of colour

Fearless makeup lovers, your face is your canvas — and it’s time to let it steal the spotlight. At Spring 2023 shows like Marni, Etro, Stella Jean and Act N°1, vibrant colour was sprayed over foreheads, brows and temples, shrugging off the notion that bright hues are just for the lids, cheeks and lips. “There aren’t any rules,” this look says. And it’s true.

From new products launching daily to the fast-paced comings and goings of TikTok-led makeup trends, there’s always something going on in the beauty universe. The object of the cosmetic industry’s desire this week? Mascara. Three coming-soon mascaras have now been put on our radar, and two viral ways to wear this lash-coating makeup staple have caught our attention.

RELATED: The Most Striking Fall 2023 Runway Beauty Trends

Simply put, mascara is having a moment — and there is much to be discussed. Allow us to bring you up to speed.

Major new launches from Fenty Beauty and Kylie Cosmetics

We kicked off the week with news from Fenty Beauty and Kylie Cosmetics that both brands will be dropping their own respective mascaras in the very near future. We’ll be able to get our hands on Fenty’s Hella Thicc long-wearing mascara first — with an online release date of March 28 (and March 31 in-store). Upon its arrival, it promises to deliver a high dose of volume in a creamy ultra-black formula. And it’s a total makeup bag must-have for the spring and summer seasons since it’s sweat-, humidity-, and transfer-proof. Launching soon after, on April 6, is Kylie Cosmetics’ first-ever foray into the world of mascara dubbed Kylash (ha!). It packs a lash-lifting punch into a chic powder pink tube that is super on-brand for Miss Jenner. Its claims? A flake-, smudge-, and clump-free product that provides multidimensional definition in a single swipe. That being said, we’ll take them both. Thanks!

A win for sustainability

In another exciting announcement that came mid-week, we learned of the first-ever post-consumer recycled fiber filaments used in mascara and eyebrow brushes. The innovation is coming down the pipeline by way of a new collection of sustainable brushes made by Medmix’s beauty brand, Geka. This debut is a thrilling development on the sustainability front, with brushes in the new range now made of 65% recycled polyethylene terephtalate (a common synthetic fibre used for product packaging) or polybutylene terephthalate (a similar type of synthetic resin used in the making of electrical and small machine parts).

Cocktails, anyone?

Switching apps now, two mascara trends are circulating on #beautytok. The first is an application technique labeled “mascara cocktailing” — but there’s no alcohol required here. Instead, the process involves layering a custom concoction of mascaras with varying formulations (think: curling, thickening, lengthening) and brush types to create a lash look that ticks all your boxes. Even Jessica Alba‘s a fan of the technique!

Lighten up

If your lash preferences are more laidback and subdued, then TikTok’s brown mascara trend may be more to your taste. Content creators on the app are exchanging their classic black mascaras for the softer appeal of chocolate brown-coated lashes. This rich hue is universally stunning on all eye colours, brightening up light green and blue irises while making the darkness of brown eyes appear deeper and more alluring. TikTok’s trendiest brown mascaras? YSL Beauty’s “Uninhibited Brown” Lash Clash and Too Faced’s Better Than Sex Mascara in the “Chocolate Brown” shade, which both lend themselves to beauty’s endless quest for the very best minimalist makeup products to satisfy its current obsession with barely-there beauty.

So, here’s what we’ve learned this week: there’s no one way to wear mascara — or to make it. In fact, it appears we’ve been spoiled for choice. The only question left to be answered now is, how do you like yours? And where will you be shopping for it?

Let’s get a little nostalgic, shall we? Imagine it’s the year 2016. Your brows are blocky and meticulously drawn on. Everything from your foundation to your liquid lipstick (Kylie Lip Kit, of course—your most prized possession at the time) is matte. You had no idea that a few years later, beauty would go through its “glazed donut” era. How were you to know that your makeup drawer full of ultra-matte products would soon be replaced with a much more minimal regimen?

Fast forward to present day and the skin finish trend du jour is a halfway point between matte glam from yesteryear and a modern, glowy complexion. Enter: “cloud skin,” the viral trend bringing soft matte makeup back. Sort of.

@victorialyn Cloud Skin Makeup!☁️ Loving these soft matte looks @hungvanngo 😍 Would you try this spring trend? #makeup #beauty #foundation #cloudskin ♬ Lo-fi hip hop – NAO-K

The term “cloud skin” was coined by MAC Cosmetics UK’s Director Of Makeup Artistry Dominic Skinner. Its name speaks to the soft-focus finish that this look seeks to achieve. “It’s velvety, blurred — it’s like dewy skin and matte skin had a baby and it’s gonna be trending so hard for Spring,” explains TikToker @victorialyn in a makeup tutorial.

From OG beauty gurus to the next generation of BeautyTok creators, cloud skin has been co-signed by makeup artists and lovers alike. In fact, the hashtag #cloudskin currently has 35 million views on TikTok. As the look circulates through the beauty community with tons of tutorials and interpretations to sift through, there are a couple of fundamental tips to keep in mind.

@dominic_mua #CloudSkin #MakeupTrend ☁️#MACCreator #MACCosmetics #MAC @maccosmetics ♬ Flowers – Miley Cyrus

The first step toward achieving cloud skin is in its name. Before you reach for your primer and foundation, prep and hydrate your skin with a base of moisturizing skincare. Then, mix a couple pumps of luminous matte foundation with a mattifying primer. As you blend, you’ll reveal a fluffy concoction of cloud skin foundation, with just the right amount of sheen. “When this dries down, the finish of it is like the perfect soft matte and that’s basically what cloud skin is — a reintroduction to soft matte makeup,” shares @victorialyn in her tutorial.

As you carry on with the rest of your routine, stick with a matte concealer and top off any cream blushes or bronzers with your ol’ faithful powder products. This will give you the right balance of radiant but matte skin. Tap into a blurring powder with a powder puff to set your skin, spritz with a matte setting spray to make it last all day, et voila!

@purenavamakeup Replying to @Makayla Cooper Cloud skin tutorial for dry skin, part 1 – The base! #cloudskintutorial #cloudskin #makeupfordryskin ♬ original sound – Makeup Tips For Everyday Women

“Us dry skin girlies can’t do matte,” commented one user on @purenavamakeup’s viral cloud skin tutorial (above). The MUA responded with two tutorials on how to achieve this look, even if your skin is on the drier side.

The main takeaways? Load up on hydrating skincare products first. Then, apply luminous foundation by pressing it into your skin with a damp sponge. Lastly, use cream products, such as blush and bronzer, and go over them with a setting powder (rather than choosing matte products from the get-go). Remember, cloud skin is not entirely matte; it’s more of a soft matte with hints of underlying dewiness. So you can absolutely work hydration into your routine without compromising the look.

So, is cloud skin the dream solution that meets 2016’s matte makeup and 2023’s glowy skin in the middle? If so, we welcome it with open arms.

As another fashion month wraps up, we find ourselves more inspired than ever by the beauty looks seen on the runways. If you’ve been searching for fresh new hair and makeup ideas, look no further than the the Fall 2023 runway beauty trends.

From hair that was both over-styled with excess amounts of gel and backcombed with reckless abandon, to playful makeup that experimented with pastels and glitter, the vibe this season was: anything goes. And it’s this rebellious creative expression that leaves us feeling inspired to approach our makeup in new ways as the year goes on.

Below, we’ve rounded up six Fall 2023 runway beauty trends that sum up the season.

Bow Beauty

With the meteoric rise of coquette beauty, seeing bows everywhere is to be expected. And the runway was no exception. So what was the high fashion approach to bow beauty this season? Miniature ribbon appliqué adorning models’ hair and cheeks, and hair manipulated into intricate bow shapes.

Pure Pastels

Autumnal beauty rules be gone! The Fall 2023 shows proved that playing with pastel makeup isn’t exclusive to spring and summer. In fact, butter-yellow blends of eyeshadow, abstract swipes of mint green, and powder pink lower lashes are encouraged for the upcoming fall season this year.

Oil-Slick Hair

Somewhere between the wet look and a clean slicked back bun is the oil-slick hair trend. Whether it’s combed away from the face, swept aside, or left down, the one requirement for this lacquered look was that hair must appear styled with thick globs of gel and ultra-shiny oil — and only then can this super-glossy texture be achieved.

All That Glitters

Using glitter in makeup is notoriously messy and difficult to remove, but that didn’t deter the makeup team at shows like Diesel and Giambattista Valli from adding the glitzy texture to their glam. From full-on hair and body glitter to shimmering mosaic eyelids and statement lips, apparently, all that glitters isn’t just gold — but blue, green and orange, too.

Bedhead Hair

Not one for oil-slick hair? Perhaps you’ll prefer bedhead hair — the deliberately disheveled look that made an appearance at shows like Miu Miu and Yohji Yamamoto. Making a purposeful mess of beauty, flyaways were accentuated and hair was teased out and tousled to create this realistic take on “I woke up like this” beauty.

The Gothaissance Goes On

Matte black lipstick, dramatic graphic liner, and deconstructed black shadow defined the current state of gothic beauty in 2023, and each look was striking in its own right. Thought we’d left goth glam in 2022? Think again. Gothic beauty lives on through the Fall 2023 runways.

By definition, the coquette (“a woman who flirts”) aesthetic channels an angelic sort of old-school beauty that draws upon notions of hyper-femininity and flirtation. According to Beauty Daily by Clarins, coquette beauty is the number one rising beauty trend on TikTok so far this year, with 1.7 billion views (and counting) on the app. Once TikTok’s algorithm has decided you’re a candidate for consuming coquette glamour content, prepare for an influx of inspiration that feels like it was plucked from a Sofia Coppola film or a live adaptation of a Jane Austen novel.

As told by TikTok and its in-the-know makeup artists and creators, true coquette beauty is not complete without a high concentration of pink products distributed between eyeshadow, blush, and lipstick. Skin is kept soft, simple, and set with powder. Because what feels more coquette than dabbing away at our cheeks with a powder puff? Next, the eyes come alive with doll-like lashes, a swipe of liquid liner, or a brightening burst of white eyeliner on the waterline for a doe-eyed effect. And finally, pearl finishes are added via iridescent highlighters to the high points of the face, like the brow bone and cheeks, for an ethereal glow.

If you’re fully committed to adopting this aesthetic, consider stocking your makeup station with brands packaged in pastel pink like Too Faced and Rare Beauty, or complete with bow details like Dior to take this trend all the way.

Hairstyles and accessories are essential to building a coquette beauty look. A head full of bows, a free-flowing cascade of bouncy curls, or a wispy set of curtain bangs will do — so long as that soft whimsical feeling and wink of playfulness is still present. Conveniently, this season’s fashion month shows have been all about the bow. Sandy Liang sent models down the runway with miniature bows adorning their crowns in New York, while Yuhan Wang tied bows of lace and ribbon into models’ braids in London. Lest we forget the Simone Rocha Fall 2023 show, where models’ cheeks were decorated with dainty bow appliqués.

From the runway to the red carpet, celebrities like Emily Ratajkowski have, perhaps unknowingly, contributed to the trend with recent coquettish hair moments. Earlier this month, the model posed before photographers at a Viktor & Rolf event with a curly disco hairdo that could easily translate on TikTok as a coquette hairstyle. Curls do make a lovely canvas for bows, after all. And while Em Rata’s spirals may be the work of a perm, natural curls are coquette material, too. Whether they’re being manipulated into a braided style or picked to afro perfection, curls can take on any coquette hair transformation.

We’ll be keeping our eye on the coquette beauty trend as the year goes on to see who embraces it and what sub-genres come out of it (we’re watching you, dark coquette!). To the craft store for mini-bows, we go!

The makeup industry’s newest beauty secret is out — Korean beauty spatulas are the key to achieving a glass skin-like foundation finish. We could swipe for hours on end through TikTok’s #makeupspatula hashtag — whose flawless foundation results has amassed over nine million views. The viral tool behind this technique is Korean beauty brand Picasso’s makeup spatula, made in collaboration with makeup artist Ham Kyung-sik.

Canadian MUA Tami El Sombati tells FASHION that the K-beauty spatula uses a much thinner application than other makeup applicator tools, which is what creates that “your skin but better” finish. “The spatula allows you to apply sheer, even layers, without the tool absorbing any of the product or leaving streaks like a brush can,”she explains. It should be noted, though, that the viral videos that have tempted us to try this trend often begin with a base of skin that already appears smooth and free of texture — which adds to the final outcome, of course.

El Sombati credits Korean makeup artists as the masters of the beauty spatula, and talked us through how anyone, from beauty amateurs to makeup pros, can try the technique.

First and foremost, you’ll need a liquid foundation for optimal results. On either a clean makeup palette or the back of your hand, apply the foundation and then run the thin edge of your spatula through it before applying the product to your face in smaller sections — rather than those satisfying long swipes you’ve seen online, El Sombati suggests. “This will definitely take some practice, but the idea is for it to create a sheer, even layer, and of course you can build by adding more layers to gradually increase coverage if needed.” You’ll also want to use a light hand during application to avoid picking up other layers with your spatula tool. “Once your foundation is on in one section, you can then blend it to perfection with a damp sponge as you go — that way you’re blending the sections before they set by themselves since they’re so thin,” shares El Sombati.

If you’re looking for an all-in-one tool to create a full face base with (say, foundation, concealer, contour andblush), you may want to skip using makeup spatulas beyond your foundation step. “I’m sure you could use them to apply other liquid products, but you may run the risk of using too much pressure and removing the base you’ve laid down [if you’re adding other makeup on top of the foundation you already applied],” says El Sombati. “The key is to use a liquid product, and be able to control the application, which would need to be a bit more precise in terms of placement with something other than foundation.”

It seems simple enough in theory, but as is the case with most art forms, practice makes perfect. “You’ll have some trial and error in the beginning for sure, so seeing what works for you, and having all kinds of tutorials online to help guide you is such a great tool,” says El Sombati.

You know what we’re letting go of this year? Eyebrows, apparently.

No, we’re not shaving them off, but with some bleach and even more guts you can get the space alien meets Bella Hadid face that has taken over TikTok. Not convinced? Let me explain.

Thanks to social media, the ultra-minimalist DIY is becoming as common as eyeliner. And even though bleached eyebrows have long been used to make a statement on runways and red carpets, the look isn’t new.

In fact, during the Elizabethan era, eyebrows were regularly bleached or plucked to achieve a bare forehead, per the period’s beauty standards. And in the ‘90s, blonde brows gained major prominence on the faces of Linda Evangelista, Madonna and Kate Moss. During this time, New York City “club kids” (aka pre-internet influencers) also endorsed the style with their extreme after-hours looks.

While the trend continued into the early aughts thanks to fashion “It” girls like Chloë Sevigny and Gwen Stefani, the 2010s saw a strong pivot away from minimalist foreheads. The decade brought about an eyebrow growth spurt, welcoming bushy, fuzzy arches back en vogue.

But in recent years, lightened brows have become a rebellious pandemic trend. Case in point: it was by far the most popular beauty choice at the 2022 Met Gala, and the look has recently been seen on celebs like Julia Fox, Amelia Gray, Bella Hadid, Lady Gaga and most recently, Kylie Jenner.

The difference this time is that bleached eyebrows are no longer only sported by the Madonnas and models of the world. In the age of TikTok self-expression, a look that was once synonymous with high fashion is being democratized. And it’s not hard to see why.

Eyebrows have long been viewed as one of the most important facial features, and we spend a lot of money trying to perfect them, from cosmetic procedures like micro-blading to brow styling products. And as a result, we’ve probably all been burned by brow experimentation mishaps. Therein lies the beauty of the bleaching trend: no eyebrows, no problem. But besides that, a brow-less face is undoubtedly magnetic.

Elongated foreheads create a bigger canvas for face art. Depending on how you style them, light brows can give an ethereal, soft aesthetic, or allow for more elaborate eye makeup.

The look is the welcome antithesis of TikTok’s viral “clean girl” aesthetic, which places no-makeup makeup and “natural” perfection as the ultimate beauty standard. A cousin to the messy Euphoria glitter-infused maquillage, the no-brow trend is perfect for the grungy maximalist.

Plus, with a look you can create at home, lightened eyebrows tap into the DIY culture that has taken over in recent years. But if you’re not ready to commit to bleach, applying concealer and purple corrector will give your arches a temporary taste of the coveted style.

Say it with me: dyeing your brows is arts and crafts! It’s no coincidence that the trend is returning as unconventional and “weird” fashion becomes more popular. With their extraterrestrial allure, bleached brows are not supposed to look conventionally attractive, per se. As the ultimate anti-beauty beauty trend, *anyone* can pull off the look.

This year, runway makeup trends 2022 were two things: expressive and extra. Metallics lined models’ eyelids, brows were bleached to a barely-there state, and faux lashes and kohl black eyeliner were taken to gothic extremes.

As far as runway makeup trends are concerned, designers and makeup artists are the vanguards of what beauty looks are considered “in” or “out” for the upcoming season. With each look sent down a catwalk, there’s the potential to birth the next beauty trend du jour. So when face gems appear at both Peter Do and Halpern — or statement blush debuts at both Gucci and Christian Cowan — we take note of a makeup trend on the rise.

To sum up 2022 in beauty looks, we’ve rounded up the top five runway makeup trends of the year below.

Glam goes goth

Will goth ever die? This year’s runways say not any time soon. Faux curtain lashes fit for a horror movie, witch-length black talon nails, black lacquered lips and of course — the quintessential icon of gothic grunge — black liner smudged smokey eyes signalled that gothic beauty was back (again). In a year where the runways forecasted funeral fashion and Wednesday Addams is having a moment, the resurgence of gothic beauty was all part of the trend cycle.

Ultra-embellished

Nothing says “extra” like a face bedazzled with chunky gemstones, iridescent pearls and OTT glitter. By this definition, 2022 catwalks were a high-class case study in how to achieve maximalist makeup at the highest degree. Move over, TikTok. If you’re not dressed in Schiaparelli haute couture and dripping rhinestone tears, you’re not doing “crying makeup” right.

Mega-bleached brows

Both on and off the runway, bleached brows shifted the beauty paradigm. This subversive beauty trend pushed back against the barely-brushed fluffy brow phenomenon, and broke out in full force at the biggest fashion shows of the year. Love it or hate it, it’s still a major makeup moment.

Statement blush

High-octane pinks and strategic product placement characterized high fashion’s take on statement blush. For these Spring 2023 shows, the standard rules of blush application did not apply. Instead, chiselled cheeks doused in bubblegum powder that blended upwards to frame the forehead were more than welcome.

Major metallics

Copper-coloured hair and chrome textured nails punctuated the 2022 beauty trend space, so runway models painted in foiled metallic finishings are well deserving of a mention on this list. From Dries Van Noten to Giambattista Valli, frosted metal makeup was swept over eyelids for maximum impact.
