Alix Earle is the first global face of Hero Cosmetics

This week on Instagram, Hero Cosmetics announced that their newest global brand ambassador is none other than TikTok’s resident it-girl, Alix Earle. If you know Earle, then you’ll know that her transparency about acne on the clock app has helped her to amass a colossal following of over six million to date. It’s no surprise, then, that this partnership with Hero Cosmetics (behind the viral Mighty Patch pimple patches) is Earle’s latest beauty and business venture.

“As someone who has openly struggled with acne since middle school, I know how emotionally frustrating and defeating it can feel when you can’t find a product that works,” shares the TikTok star in a press statement. “I’m so proud to work with a brand like Hero that promotes skin positivity and confidence.”

Annabelle launches a super hydrating concealer

Two surefire ways to ruin an hour’s worth of applying makeup? Using a face-base that dries out the skin and a concealer that creases and cracks under the eye. With the launch of Annabelle’s Perfect Fit Ultra-Hydrating Tint and Concealer, it’s time to wave goodbye to dry under eyes and a dry base!

Formulated with 1% hyaluronic acid, the products are designed to drench the skin with hydration and leave behind a natural, second-skin-like finish. Where fragrance is concerned, 2023 will be a tough year to top with its senses-delighting launches, but 2024 is already shaping up to be another big year for perfumes, colognes and everything in between.

Last year, vanilla perfumes went viral, niche scents were on the rise and old fave fragrances were reimagined. So far this year, perfumers like YSL and Ellis Brooklyn have translated fashion trends to fragrance, bottling up the colours du jour (read: red and peach) and presenting new ways to wear them. Others like Armani and Viktor & Rolf have revamped their signature scents. Suffice it to say, we’ll be spoiled by choice with an influx of new fragrances to shop from as the months roll on.

Follow along as we break down the best new perfumes that’ll define 2024.

Dior New Look

best new perfumes 2024

New year, New Look! Inspired by Christian’s Dior iconic New Look silhouette from 1947, this amber-scented, unisex eau de parfum finds the perfect balance between freshness and sensuality. Featuring enigmatic notes of aldehyde and frankincense, this scent redefines what it means to smell like amber.

“True to Christian Dior who wanted his fragrances to be an olfactory mirror of his couture, I strove to retain this perfect symbiosis between fashion and fragrance with incredible daring,” says Francis Kurkdjian, creative director of parfums Dior on the brand’s website. “I wanted to create a fragrance that echoes the spirit, nuances and essence of the New Look today.”

This Valentine’s Day, look to makeup in seasonal shades of pink and red worn in both classic and experimental ways. Think: va-va-voom eyeliner and heart eyeshadow art. Prepping for a serious night on the town? Pair your full beat with hair that’s unabashedly sexy. ’Tis the season of grand gestures, after all — so why not go all out on your glam?

While the notion of love is central to the February 14 holiday, it can be honoured and celebrated in many different ways, whether you’re having a girls night out, headed to a romantic rendezvous in the city, or taking yourself on a solo date. Here, we’ve rounded up eight Valentine’s Day makeup and hair looks fit for any occasion. We predict it’ll be love at first sight.

For a solo date

Who said you can’t get all glammed up for yourself? Taking inspiration from this lip look by Marika D’Auteil, a bold neon pout will give you the confidence to finally take yourself out on that solo date you’ve been considering. In true love day fashion, opt for a megawatt shade of fuchsia on the lips and subdued swipes of pink over the cheeks so the lip can have its moment.

For a girls’ night out

With your gals by your side and the whole night ahead of you, this ladies’ night is your opportunity to go wild with full-on glitter glam. Sure, we love our reds and pinks at this time of year, but purple is the underrated V-Day shade that’ll instantly elevate your beat. Emphasizing glittery lilac lids, dewy cheeks and a glossy rose lip, use this shimmery shadow look by Sofia Tilbury as your guide. It’s G.N.O, baby!

For a blind date

A post shared by MIA CONNOR (@miaconnor)

If you’re booked for a blind date (exciting!), soft peach glam is the safe bet that reads effortlessly flawless. Not only does this easy-to-wear shade flatter every skin tone, but it just so happens to be Pantone’s 2024 Colour of the Year, too. Swipe it on your lids, cheeks, and lips for a monochromatic look that feels flirty and on-trend. When it comes to glam this subtle, the bigger the hair, the better.

For Galentine’s brunch

What would Valentine’s Day be without a few hearts? Break out your best eyeshadow palette and tap into your creative side with a heart-shaped eyeshadow look, like this one by makeup artist Samantha Harvey, over mimosas with your girls. A sleek style that keeps your hair out of your face will let your heart eyes do all the talking. Cheers to you, ladies.

For staying in

A post shared by Bobby Eliot (@bobbyeliot)

If spending the night at home and ordering in with your S.O. is more your vibe, we’ve got you covered. A messy updo of tousled curls like Whitney Peak’s is the low effort look with high payoff to try for an at-home Valentine’s Day date. Add a healthy helping of highlighter and a matte nude lip and you’re all set. Just because you may be staying in doesn’t mean you can’t get a little dolled up!

For a late-night date

Whether you’ve got a candlelit dinner booked or a night of spontaneous bar hopping planned, consider the alluring combination of sharp-winged liner and a romantic red lip for a night out with your partner. Let this look by @meyloetta on Instagram be your guide to glamour that oozes sex appeal and sets the tone for a night of flirtatious exchanges. Classic? Yes. Cliché? Maybe. Either way, effective. Best served with a bombshell blowout.

For that exciting third date

A post shared by Leunita Murtezi (@leunitamurtezi)

Redefine what constitutes Valentine’s Day makeup with an electrifying liner look this year. Your inspo? This glam by Leunita Murtezi. Reach for a violet-hued pencil liner and fill in your waterline (and lower lash line) for a makeup moment that adds a hint of fun to your look — but doesn’t give it all away. This beauty moment is all about the eyes, so sweep your hair up into a slicked-back pony.

For a day date

A post shared by Nikki_Makeup (@nikki_makeup)

For a V-day walk or picnic in the park, might we suggest thinking pink? Not only does soft pink glam emit a playful aura well-suited to a daytime date, but its light pigment allows for multi-use on the eyes, cheeks and lips to create a monochromatic look that is both cost and time efficient — because you’ve got a date to get to! Pair the monochromatic Valentine’s Day makeup look with your hair centre-parted and smoothed into a ponytail to let your gorgeous face take centre stage.

Attention: Dyson’s newest hair innovation has arrived! The Supersonic r™, available exclusively for hair stylists, is a cutting-edge tool is Dyson’s smallest, lightest and most precise launch yet.

The arrival of the ergonomically designed Supersonic r™ seeks to resolve an industry-wide issue observed in a years-long Dyson survey — stylists developing strain-related injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome as a result of styling up to 16 clients a day, constantly adapting the angle of their wrists and arms as they style. Sized down by 30 per cent in size and 20 per cent in weight, this little wonder allows for styles that can dry faster, smoother, and free of frizz without causing heat damage to the client’s hair, or injuries to the stylist themselves.

Equipped with three airflow settings, four heat modes (including a cold shot!), and an assortment of attachments, there’s no style that can’t be pulled off with this dryer.

Nivea’s Luminous630 line is live

Good news, Canada — Nivea’s internationally beloved Luminous360 collection has finally hit Canadian shelves. A game-changer for stubborn dark spots, we promise this one was worth the wait.

Throughout 10 years of research and development, Nivea’s team of experts was able to sift through over 50,000 ingredients in search of the right molecule to help address and prevent the look of dark spots. It was molecule #630 (hence the name) that led to the discovery of the patented Luminous630 ingredient that lives within this skincare collection. The magic of this ingredient lies within its ability to regulate tyrosinase (an enzyme in the skin that causes melanin production), therefore balancing pigmentation and reducing the appearance of dark spots.

Whether you pick up the Advanced Serum, Even Tone Cream or Anti-Dark Circles Eye Cream, prepare to be blown away by the results.

Move over, minimalists. Big hair is on its way back — and it’ll be better (and bigger!) than ever.

Though slicked-back buns have been all the rage for some time, we can’t help but wonder if more va-va-voom volume is on the way. If you look to the gravity-defying styles recently worn by A-listers like Miley Cyrus and Julia Roberts, plus a runway full of Marc Jacobs models, the answer is a powerful “yes.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Bob Recine (@bobrecine)

At this month’s 2024 Grammys, Miley Cyrus took to the stage flaunting a larger-than-life mullet like only she can. The pop diva’s brunette tresses, lightened up by heavy-handed highlights, were back-combed and tousled into a full-of-body hairdo, bringing to mind visions of her godmother and country legend Dolly Parton and her signature peroxide blonde bouffant. It would appear that Parton’s rumoured “the higher the hair, the closer to God” philosophy runs deep in this family, indeed.

Bob Recine, Cyrus’ hairstylist of eight years, cited “a punk, Raquel Welch from the ’70s” as his inspiration for the look in an interview with Byrdie. “We wanted it dry and big through teasing, but not like the old way where it would be coiffed. We wanted it to be a little messy where you could see some of the teasing,” he shared.

On Instagram, Recine broke down the technique and products used to create the Flowers singer’s “sexy bounce” look, crediting the Nexus XXL Volume Hairspray as the product that held the look together through her red carpet walk, a rockstar performance and multiple costume changes

A post shared by Serge Normant (@sergenormant)

For British Vogue’s February issue, Julia Roberts appeared on the cover with a flawlessly executed blowout that gives body. The Pretty Woman star’s natural ringlets were stretched and shaped into big-barrelled curls full of volume, taking us back to the ’80s when the star caught her first big break in Mystic Pizza (1988).

In the high fashion realm, Marc Jacobs sent models sauntering down his Spring 2024 runway with puffed-up, full-lace human hair wigs sourced by renowned hairstylist Duffy. “The shape is a suggestion of that late ’60s, early ’70s disco moment,” shared the stylist with Coveteur. Pinned to the mood board backstage were images of Diana Ross and fellow members of The Supremes, who, like many other Black women, serve as icons of these era-defining updos.

A post shared by Marc Jacobs (@marcjacobs)

One flip through a history book and you’ll find illustrations of men and women from the 16th and 17th centuries in particular wearing sky-high wigs as status symbols that could hardly fit through a doorframe today. And even further back, depictions of Ancient Egyptians adorned with wigs that exuded major volume. More recently in the 20th century, styles like the beehive and the bouffant of the ’60s and ’70s also favoured volume.

During the 1960s, the rise of big hair emerged from years of pared-back wartime styles, alongside the invention of the roller and lacquer spray. In the following decade, the 1970s saw freedom of expression via hair — partly thanks to the women’s rights movement — which led to styles that grew exponentially in size, from blowouts to afros.

A post shared by Donna Summer (@officialdonnasummer)

No matter the decade, celebrities have proved time after time that big hair can be interpreted in myriad ways. Just look to Jane Fonda as Barbarella, Priscilla Presley, Donna Summer or Tina Turner for vintage variations of the style. Stars like SZA and Solange serve as present-day big-haired icons with their unapologetically voluminous cascades of curls, with Cyrus and Roberts joining the “bigger is better” ranks.

As for how we non-celebs can tackle the trend, many of us were born with naturally “big” hair that takes up space and volume all on our own, and we can carry on flaunting it business as usual (if we so choose to), and call on the aid of hot tools and hair spray when we really want to pump up the volume.

@daniellemarcan #beauty #hair @marcjacobs ♬ lilacs – ☆

Though it’s making a comeback now, having big hair hasn’t always been viewed as trendy or desirable, and it’s a delight to witness the “big hair, don’t care” attitude catch on en masse once again. Fortunately, TikTok is also brimming with tutorials on how to achieve huge hair no matter your natural texture, including videos directly inspired by the hair seen on the Marc Jacobs runway.

So, what does the return of big hair mean in 2024? Is this just the cyclical nature of trends? Or is there something more to it? Much like the revival of messy mob wife makeup in place of the “clean girl” look, perhaps the renaissance of the bouffant marks a rebellion against slicked-backed styles and more polished manes. On the other hand, it could be as simple as a mass suffering from, dare we say, flat hair fatigue — and a yearning to be more out there with our hair choices.

With Julia, Miley and Marc Jacobs leading the way, we’ll all be onto bigger and better (hair) in no time.

Guerlain unveils a new fragrance guerlain neroli fragrance

“Picture kilometers of orange tree fields,” says perfumer Delphine Jelk over a video call. “The sky is blue, the sun is shining, and there’s a freshness in the air.” Jelk is describing the inspiration behind her latest creation, Guerlain’s Neroli Plein Sud. “One second, let me get something.” She reemerges on-screen with a travel diary from her time in Morocco. The notebook is filled with dried plants, sketches, and fabric swatches that inspired the luxe new fragrance. “I went to fashion design school before getting into perfumery, so I design fragrances exactly like I’d design clothes, starting with mood boards filled with colors, words, and pictures.

Néroli Plein Sud is born out of a collaboration with Antone de Saint Exupéry Youth Foundation, in honour of the beloved author of The Little Prince and Southern Mail (the latter which directly inspired the fragrance). To bring the latest addition to Guerlain’s L’Art & La Matière collection to life, Jelk combined neroli—an essential oil produced from the blossom of an orange tree–with turmeric, ginger, and cinnamon. At once crisp, spicy, and warm, she describes the scent as a “fresh breeze blowing over the hot sand of the Sahara [desert].”

If you ask us, it’s never too soon to start sourcing inspiration for your next mani. And with New Year’s Eve behind us and the countdown to Love Day officially underway, it’s time to start planning your Valentine’s Day manicures.

From velvet-textured and heart-shaped nail designs to flashy chrome tips, we present five Valentine’s Day manicures you’re bound to fall head over heels for. Plus, the products you’ll need to recreate them at home.

Scroll away to your heart’s content.

Try a pink velvet manicure

Velvet nails ooze luxury, and once you catch a glimpse of their shimmering allure, it’s hard to look away. This heart-shaped, candy-pink manicure puts a Valentine’s Day spin on the velvet texture trend that is 100 percent worth recreating ahead of the big day on February 14th.

The trick that makes these multi-dimensional nails so attractive (literally!) is using a magnet over magnetic nail polish to create that textured illusion. Taking the look one step further, nail artist Aiste Haas uses a twisted paperclip attached to a magnet to create heart shapes on the sides of each nail. Ooh la la!

OPI’s “La Paz-itively Hot” polish is bursting with microscopic flecks of glitter that’ll channel velvet vibes without the need for a magnet. What’s more, this Long-Wear Lacquer allows for up to 11 days of gel-like wear with a high gloss finish.

Crunched for time? Play with press-ons! These velvet-textured, sugar pink-shaded nails by Kiss in the “West Coast” design are exactly what this look calls for.

Wear heart-shaped French tips

Why wear your heart on your sleeve this V-Day when you can wear them on your fingertips? We adore the way this ombré manicure reimagines French tips and stays true to the lovey-dovey colour codes of the season.

Taking your French tip up three-quarters of the nail, create two rounded half-circle shapes at the top of your design to form the “heart” shape. For the ombré effect, opt for a different polish on each nail that ranges from lightest to darkest within the same colour family. If you can’t decide between wearing soft pink, flirty fuchsia or deep magenta polish, why not wear them all at once?

For the lightest shade in this nail look, seek out a pastel shade of pink. With its subtle yet sweet appeal, Sally Hansen’s “Tickled Pink” polish will surely do the trick.

For your darkest polish, try Essie’s “Bahama Mama.” Somewhere between purple and magenta, this glossy shade will make the perfect finishing touch on your pinky nail.

Paint a red jelly set

A post shared by Alison • nailsbyalsn (@nailsbyalsn)

You can always rely on a romantic red manicure to set the Valentine’s Day mood — but this year, it may be time to try a new way to wear this on-trend colour. Our suggestion? A jelly-textured set of rouge tips.

You can shop an already-made jelly-textured polish if you like, or you can get experimental by mixing a standard red polish and a clear top coat — which are great products to keep in your nail polish stash for other looks, too — to make a DIY jelly concoction. All you’ll need to do is mix a drop of your top coat in with a few drops of your red polish, and there you have it!

A highly pigmented, eye-catching shade of rouge is essential for a DIY red jelly polish. Essie Expressie’s “Seize the Minute” is just what you’ll need. And it’s as easy on the wallet as it is on the eyes.

To give your red polish more of a translucent finish, reach for a clear-coloured top coat like this one by OPI. It’ll also help lock in your lacquer with a protective coating so it won’t chip.

Opt for micro hearts

A post shared by Syd • nailsbysmf (@nailsbysmf)

Cliché as they may be, hearts will forever be on trend come Valetine’s Day. This year, try a manicure that features micro-sized hearts around the perimeter of your nails for a dainty look.

With their scaled-down size and scattered placement, these mini hearts remind us of handwritten love notes speckled with cutesy doodles you may have once drawn for a crush (or hoped to receive).  Adoreable!

Pick up this sheet of mini nail stickers to avoid the hassle of hand drawing your micro hearts yourself. Love notes, roses, pink hearts, red hearts, it’s all here.

Do lavender chrome

Pinks and reds make up classic Valentine’s Day colour palettes — but purple is not to be overlooked! Case in point: the shimmery lavender manicure above.

Though we’ve just entered 2024, the chrome craze seems to be showing no signs of slowing down just yet. When paired with a pastel purple polish, this trendy lacquer topper gives off an iridescent hue that’ll have your V-Day date totally mesmerized.

Eliminating the need to purchase a lavender polish and a chrome powder separately, this “Violet Voltage” polish by Essence is a two-in-one steal. Plus, it’s under five dollars!

With the countdown to February 14 officially underway, there’s much to think about. Reservations need to be booked. Outfits must be finalized, makeup looks must be tried. And there’s a plethora of Valentine’s Day nail colours to be considered for V-Day manicures.

Come date night, the colour of your nails can say a lot about how you feel without the need for words. Flirtatious feelings are ripe for pink. A playful mood calls for purple, while sexy vibes mean classic red. Think of painting your nails as a fun way to drop subtle hints for your date this Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day nail colour trends to try in 2024

You can truly never go wrong with sugary pink shades, romantic reds, and even pastel purples for V-Day manicures. That said, opting for unorthodox shades of these traditional Valentine’s Day colours — say, a vibrant magenta in place of a pastel pink, or a deep burgundy instead of a true red — allows for a little more experimentation, while still being on theme.

Consider shape and length as well. Almond nails are the style of the moment, but stiletto and coffin-shaped nails have a sexier edge that may feel better suited to this time of year.

Glossy is always gorgeous, but we’d be remiss not to mention the chrome craze still going on since Hailey Bieber popularized the trend in 2022. More recently, jelly nails with translucent finishes and a sheer coat of colour are a coveted look. Lest we forget glitter, which is always a good idea for special occasions like Valentine’s Day.

Update: After living a bare skin life for months, Pamela Anderson has acquired vegan skincare brand, Sonsie. Along with her sons Brandon and Dylan, the former FASHION cover star is now the proud owner of the cruelty-free line that was first founded in June by influencer Marie von Behrens-Felip. “Pamela has a deep passion for inner-wellbeing, a unique perspective on beauty, and is one of the earliest advocates for vegan & cruelty free formulations around the world,” shared the brand in an Instagram post announcing the news. We love this journey for Pam!

Forget the beauty and style trends forecasted for the 2024 year at Paris Fashion Week — FASHION’s October 2023 cover star Pamela Anderson is making headlines for going fresh-faced and makeup-free at the season’s biggest runway shows.

“I didn’t come to Paris Fashion Week and think, ‘Oh I’m not going to wear any makeup!'” shared Anderson in a Vogue France get-ready-with-me video ahead of the Vivienne Westwood Spring 2024 show where she used a base of DIY rose oil in place of foundation. “I don’t know, something just kind of came over me and I was dressing in these beautiful clothes and I thought, ‘I don’t want to compete with the clothes,” she told the publication. “I’m not trying to be the prettiest girl in the room.’ I feel like it’s just freedom. It’s like a relief.”

A newfound sense of self-assurance is something Pamela Anderson discussed in her October 2023 interview with FASHION. “For me, this is a period to get to know who I am,” she told fashion news director Annika Lautens. “It’s a powerful time, and I feel really good in my own skin.”

The empowerment of feeling comfortable in her own skin no doubt translated to her time on set; the Canadian icon was photographed for FASHION’s pages wearing subtle makeup, allowing her natural beauty to shine.

Paris Fashion Week — the last of the big four weeks, following New York City, London, and Milan—is considered to be the crème de la crème of fashion month. It churns out the grandest displays of opulence. The street style is impeccable. The glam is top-notch, and it’s the perfect excuse to indulge in over-the-top makeup and hairstyles.

For Anderson, it instead ended up serving as the ultimate stage to make a major no-makeup statement as she embarked on what she described on Instagram as “an adventure in Paris with fresh eyes.” From The Row to Isabel Marant and Victoria Beckham, the Canadian queen was a radiant beauty as she took on the City of Lights in a public display of makeup-free self-love, miles from her signature ’90s glam.

Since the release of the Pam & Tommy mini-series in 2022 and Anderson’s own tell-all Pamela, A Love Story documentary on Netflix earlier this year, we’ve been living in the era of the “Pam-aissance.” Having Anderson back on our screens has inspired a wave of kohl-rimmed eyes adorned with smokey eyeshadow and pencil-thin brows. And the beauty community is still longing to perfect that nude-lipped Pamela pout.

When asked about vintage Pam beauty looks going viral on TikTok, Anderson told FASHION: “I think it’s funny,” revealing that her sons, Brandon Thomas and Dylan Jagger Lee, first brought the trend to her attention. “When you start hearing that your image is on different mood boards, it’s pretty surreal. But it also shows that I marched to the beat of my own drum.”

The aforementioned nude lipstick look was a signature Anderson beauty look that emerged during the ’90s under the creative guidance and mastery of the late Alexis Vogel, her go-to makeup artist at the time.

Vogel, who passed away from breast cancer in 2019, both birthed Anderson’s iconic glam and is now part of the reason that the actress began to embrace going makeup-free. “She was the best. And since then, I just felt, without Alexis, it’s just been better for me not to wear makeup,” Anderson told Elle in an interview this summer.

A post shared by Jamie Lee Curtis (@jamieleecurtis)

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis took to Instagram to share her support for Anderson and praise her new look, which she described as an act of courage and rebellion. “The natural beauty revolution has officially begun!” she writes in the caption of her post. “@Pamelaanderson in the middle of fashion week with so many pressures and postures […] and this woman showed up and claimed her seat at the table with nothing on her face.”

Challenging Curtis’ caption, the top-liked comment of the post reads, “I think that rather than applauding women wearing no makeup, we should be applauding that she seems to have found her comfort zone and seems to be embracing what that is for her age.”

Like other celebrities, like Alicia Keys who decided to ditch makeup altogether in 2016 and Kim Kardashian who attended Balenciaga’s Spring 2017 show bare-faced during Paris Fashion Week that same year, Anderson’s makeup-free outings have contributed to a movement with a more mature perspective that brings the beauty industry’s fixation on youth into the conversation. “I like to say the word ‘life-ing’ instead of ‘age-ing’. Chasing youth is just futile,” she told i-D outside of the Victoria Beckham Spring 2024 show.

A post shared by Pamela Anderson (@pamelaanderson)

In today’s digital age, we also have to consider the no-makeup movement that has long existed on Instagram via the make-up-free selfie. As recently as last month, Selena Gomez shared a bare-faced snap with her 430 million followers. A makeup-free selfie also holds the power to make a bold beauty statement, especially when it comes from celebrities we’re used to seeing all dolled up. Not to mention the ongoing battle against faceless hate comments that may come along with it.

To quote Anderson from her Vogue France segment: “You kind of have to challenge beauty sometimes, you know. If we all chase youth or we’re chasing our idea of what beauty is in fashion magazines and everything, we’re only going to be disappointed or maybe a little bit sad. So, I feel like this is it.”

Watch below for more on why Anderson’s makeup-free moments at Paris Fashion Week were so powerful.

Reviving dry, lacklustre strands with nearly-magical hair oils. While heat protectants shield and hair masks repair damage, the best hair oil can do both — with an added dose of shine.

With just a few drops, hair oil has the power to transform even the thirstiest tresses. And don’t worry if the words “hair” and “oil” in the same sentence cause a little trepidation; we’re sharing why everyone needs a good hair oil on their bathroom shelf, regardless of hair type.

What to look for in the best hair oil

Like most hair products, finding the right hair oil for you is an entirely personal process that depends on your goal. This ranges based on your hair type. The one thing we can agree on across the board? The use of a hair oil is a surefire way to elevate the average hair routine — but don’t just take our word for it.

“With over two decades of experience as a hairstylist, I have personally witnessed how consistently using a high-quality hair oil can drastically improve your hair’s health,” says Toronto salon owner and founder of haircare brand THIC, Morgan Tully. “It prevents breakage caused by heat styling, harsh chemical processes and environmental factors which often lead to issues like dryness, frizz and breakage.”

Tully reminds us that a “one size fits all” approach does not apply to choosing hair oils. To begin your quest for the right hair oil, she suggests narrowing down what you’d like your oil to do for your hair. For example, if you’re seeking an oil that specifically boosts moisture and shine, that may differ from an oil with featured heat-protectant qualities.

Start small if you’ve been steering clear of hair oils for fear of making your hair look greasy or weighed down.

“Take a few drops and massage through the mid to ends of your hair first. If it makes a noticeable difference right away but doesn’t feel heavy, add a few more drops and work your way up.”

Tully’s final pro tip? Always test new products on wash day! (Before you suds up, of course.) That way, if you’re not loving the results, you can restart your routine with a head of freshly washed hair. And if you’re fighting an oily scalp on a non-wash day, there’s nothing a little dry shampoo can’t fix, she assures.

How we chose the best hair oils

We looked at a variety of factors when choosing the best hair oil options for every type of hair. We considered ingredients (and their ability to nourish hair without harming or weighing it down), overall value and ease of use. Availability was also important for us, because finding a great hair oil is only as good as your ability to access it.

Evaluation criteria

We sought out hair oils with active antioxidants, easy-to-use pump dispensers or droppers and velvety formulas. We excluded anything that felt too heavy, sticky or cumbersome. If the oil had us running for a shower, it didn’t make the list.

Our preference went to lightweight formulas that nourished strands without clogging follicles or leaving a greasy texture behind.

Is there a stunt more superior than dramatically flipping your hair and leaving behind an irresistible trail of hair mist perfume in your wake? Truly, it’s a tough flex to follow.

Though typical pulse points for body sprays and perfumes include the wrists, neck and even behind the knees, who doesn’t want hair that also smells delicious?

As many of us can likely recall from memory (you never forget the scent of Victoria’s Secret or Bath and Body Works body mists), body sprays were everything in the late ’90s and early aughts. Much like other Y2K trends having a resurgence (lookin’ at you, indie sleaze), we’re thrilled to report that these lightweight sprays are making a comeback, and hair mists are coming along with them.

With a lower concentration of fragrance oils than perfume, body mists are light enough to layer, so they can be used to create unique-to-you scent concoctions. And they’re more affordable, which allows consumers to purchase more scents to play with. Modern hair mist perfumes often double as body sprays, and they’re beloved for many of the same reasons. What’s more, they’ve got the added benefit of ingredients that treat hair concerns, like dryness and dullness, with each spray.

Even if we have to squeeze our way through a sea of “10-year-olds at Sephora” looking for the Sol de Janeiro shelf, many of us are craving a nostalgic hit (er, spritz) of fragranced body and hair mists. Ahead, six of the best-smelling hair mist perfumes and where to buy them. Good luck out there.

Rare Beauty Find Comfort Body and Hair Fragrance Mist

hair mist perfume rare beauty

With revitalizing notes of lemon zest, violet and vetiver, this newly launched hair mist from Rare Beauty’s Find Comfort collection is like a pick-me-up in a bottle.

Though it can also be used as a body mist, the reparative niacinamide and biotin ingredients within its formula target hair strands, to keep your tresses looking softer, shinier, and stronger.

Dermalogica unveils a collagen-preserving serum

As we age, the level of collagen (the protein responsible for skin elasticity and support) production in our skin naturally decreases, and external factors like pollution and sun exposure can also contribute to collagen degradation. Fortunately for us, Dermalogica’s latest skincare innovation, the Pro-Collagen Banking Serum, is here to save the day.

Fuelled by amino acids, which are known as the building blocks of protein, this lightweight serum visibly plumps up the skin while keeping it protected. In addition, it encourages collagen production and helps preserve this powerful protein in our skin at the same time.

Take cover, there’s a mob wife makeup revolution on the rise.

Succinctly put by FASHION’s Natalie Michie, the mob wife aesthetic is “everything 2023 minimalism is not.” Sartorially, it’s defined by floor-length faux furs, bold animal prints, and oversized sunglasses that cover most of the face — because a mafia wife never knows who’s watching. Naturally, there’s an equally extra makeup look to match. And given the rise of trends like “indie sleaze,” it’s actually not that surprising.

The very antithesis of the fresh-faced, “clean girl” look that dominated 2023, characterized by Hailey Bieber-esque glossy lips, a rosy flush and slicked-back buns, grunge-inspired makeup looks are poised to overthrow minimalist makeup trends in 2024. With a mutual appreciation for excessive strokes of eyeliner and hair with body, both the mob wife and indie sleaze aesthetics are decidedly darker, with an admirable air of carelessness that mainstream beauty hasn’t embraced in a while.

Let’s examine the women of The Sopranos — who are the quintessential mafia wife models — for telltale signs of the mob wife beauty aesthetic. French manicures à la Carmela Soprano (Edie Falco) with tips so long they click and clack with every gesture. Brown-lined lips, sultry smoked-out eyes and overly coiffed hair in the style of Adriana La Cerva (Drea de Matteo). There’s a certain sense of, “don’t f**ck with me, or I’ll call my husband,” about it all.

These women would roll their eyes at the mere thought of stepping out sans eyeliner, or a wash of grey eyeshadow, at the very least. They’re probably convinced that the first drag of a cigarette feels better if they’ve got a “lip” (likely a moody mauve or a deep rouge) on. They’re always put together and wouldn’t be caught dead with limp hair that lacked volume, but they don’t take themselves as seriously as a clean girl makeup devotee might.

A post shared by Sharon Stone (@sharonstone)

Elsewhere in the cinematic universe of mob wives, you can draw inspiration from Casino’s Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone) and her full-on lashes, Elvira Hancock’s (Michelle Pfeiffer) ultra-thin brows in Scarface, or Karen Hill’s (Lorraine Bracco) always-big brunette bouffant in Goodfellas. Modern “mob wives” may modernize the trend with almond-shaped French tips, hair curled with high-tech Dyson machines, or of-the-moment makeup like winged liner, but the overarching “IDGAF” attitude persists.

A post shared by Indie Sleaze (@indiesleaze)

Also on the grunge-glam spectrum lies the indie sleaze aesthetic. In 2021, TikTok’s resident trend forecaster, Mandy Lee, predicted the return of this trend, noting that some of the key characteristics of the era (which ran roughly from the early 2000s to early 2010s) were  “provocative advertisements,” “amateur style flash photography,” and “opulent displays of clubbing.” No TikTok, just Tumblr.

The @indiesleaze Instagram account (above) brilliantly sums up the era with photos of real-life club goers — including icons of the day like Katy Perry and Ke$ha — as well as snapshots from raunchy American Apparel ads and stills of Brittany Murphy in Spun. “Documenting the decadence of the mid-late aughts and the indie sleaze party scene that died in 2021,” reads the account’s Instagram bio.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Gabbriette B (@gabbriette)

As for makeup, indie sleaze glam is characterized by deliberately dishevelled hair, traces of glitter here and there, and smudgy kohl-rimmed eyes. Appearance-wise, these would be your Gabbriettes. Your Effy Stonems from Skins. Your Venetia Cattons from Saltburn. A party animal meets rockstar groupie, if you will.

And while we’re on the subject of Saltburn, we may have the 2023 film to thank for speeding up the revival of this mid-aughts aesthetic. Throughout the movie, Venetia remains in a perpetual state of day-after glam, which is precisely what the indie sleaze aesthetic calls for. Her undone, dark roots peak through a head full of bottle-blonde hair, and her blackest black liner appears well lived in.

In real life, falling asleep with your makeup on or failing to execute a flawless smokey eye can indeed result in peak indie sleaze glam. The more carelessly your makeup is applied, the better.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Saltburn (@saltburnfilm)

While the mob wife and indie sleaze looks are distinct aesthetics, they are united in their departure from the sleek, minimalist makeup that has dominated in recent year. Between them, there’s a shared admiration for almost deliberate messiness that’s frankly refreshing after years of pursuing perfection (read: clean girl glam and quiet luxury). A person can only take so much barely-there makeup before they reach for ultra-black pencil liners and overdo their glam in a fit of rebellious rage.

Though minimalist makeup gives the illusion of being low-effort, slicked-back buns and glassy skin require far more maintenance than you may assume. Sometimes, it’s easier to embrace chaos and lean into a little grunge. Don’t let mean mugged scowls from mobsters and their wives fool you, you might even have fun. (Just don’t sleep in your makeup.)

As we brace ourselves for a frigid winter, we look to our nails for an extra source of joy and creative expression.

Summer brought us saccharine-shaded pastel polishes, fall channelled vampy vibes, and winter is simply playing it cool. The trendiest colours of the season both embrace the icy mood of the moment and go against the grain with dashes of vibrant colour (hint: red is going nowhere).

Ahead, we round up seven of the coolest colours to wear on your winter nails, plus where to shop nail polishes to get the look.

Go for gold

If you’re more of a gold gal than silver, opt for an aureate-hued manicure to help warm up the winter months. Just as chrome was on trend all 2023 long, we suspect gold nails may be on the rise in 2024.

Any polish that can match all your jewellery, whether it be gold or silver, is a total plus. We’re not afraid of mixing metals around here, and you shouldn’t be either! Who can resist the pull of glittery, golden fingertips?

Is there anything more chic than saying, “It’s ‘Phénix’ by Chanel,” when onlookers ask what sparkling gold polish you’re wearing on your nails? Doubt it.

Brrr! It’s cold in here. Or is it just these frosted blue fingertips? For the long winter ahead, we encourage you to take the ice-blue plunge and sport a set of wintry azure nails.

Not to be confused with summer’s blueberry milk nails, this glacial hue is a little darker in shade and not quite as vibrant. Think winter blues, but the good kind.

Gucci’s “Lucy Baby Blue” nail polish is positively cool and ultra-glossy. With a single swipe, you’ll already be impressed by this polish’s colour payoff and ability to smooth out imperfections and ridges on your nails.

Going grey

A post shared by Anahi Victoria (@avrnailswatches)

If you can’t escape the winter chill, embrace it by painting your nails a chic shade of grey. With its icy, edgy undertone, wintertime calls for subdued shades like this one.

Though it may seem dull or drab to some, the possibilities for grey-hued polishes alone are endless. Your grey can read anywhere from a near-blue hue to a warmer-toned “greige” — each shade is more elevated than the last.

Velvety, sugar plum shades of polish are the perfect way to mimic the moody atmosphere of winter without going all the way to the dark side. Consider these deep-hued berry tones winter’s more sophisticated answer to the blueberry milk nails that dominated nail trends this summer.

Perhaps they’re our sign that food-inspired beauty trends (hello, latte makeup and glazed donut nails!) will continue to live on in the new year.

Bright and light neutrals

Reflect the glow of the snow sure to come this winter with a set of soft nails. Much like the neutral clothing hanging in our closets, a neutral manicure can easily be dressed up or toned down.

A solid neutral polish makes an immaculate base for ornamental rhinestones as we countdown to the holidays, and New Year’s Eve party-approved shimmer and glitter shades. Or, if you like to keep things simple, it’s a tried and true hue that looks elevated all on its own. Ranging anywhere from milky pinks to sheer wintry whites, the keyword to keep in mind here is: bright!

Photography Courtesy of Essie

For a soft, sheer hint of colour that finds the perfect medium between pink and white, opt for Essie’s “Marshmallow.” Keep it sheer with one to two coats, or build it up to an opaque shade by adding more layers.

Where sheer pink shades are concerned, there’s hardly a polish more coveted than OPI’s “Bubble Bath.” After all, it’s one half of the formula popularized by #beautytok that combines with the brand’s “Funny Bunny” polish to create the *ultimate* neutral nail colour.

Chrome is where the heart is

From futuristic silver shades to soft vanilla chrome, this colour trend popularized by Hailey Bieber’s glazed donut nails of last summer shows no signs of stopping during the winter months.

With its glistening, icy appeal, the metallic hue of silver chrome polish feels festive enough for soirée season, yet cool and understated enough to last the length of winter while still being wearable.

A chrome powder is typically required for this widely sought-after chrome look, but Londontown’s Lackur Enhanced Colour polish in the shade “Dishy Splendour” allows you to cheat your way to silver chrome. With its highly pigmented and long-lasting formula, it’s the only product you’ll need to recreate this colour.

This winter, the red renaissance lives on! Unlike the moody rouge shades we embraced during the fall, we’ll be favouring vivacious bursts of bright red hues to liven up the cool months.

Lucky for us, this colour trend doubles as truly timeless and right on-trend — having been spotted, well, everywhere from the runways to red carpets this year.

How many ways can you wear a bob? If the cropped haircuts spotted on celebrities so far this year are any indication, it appears the limit does not exist. Settling anywhere between chin and shoulder lengths, bob haircuts for women are the hairstyle du jour.

Blunt cut, shaggy, micro-cropped, we don’t discriminate! This timeless hairstyle is shaping up (get it?) to be the biggest haircut trend of the year. Just look to the 2024 Golden Globes where the red carpet was illuminated with film and television stars rocking bob after bob. From Emma Stone’s red-hot retro lob to Ayo Edibiri’s flipped-out ends, who knew there were so many ways to work this short and chic style?

Read on as we break down the best ways to wear bob cuts, and how to style them.

The retro lob

A post shared by Rachel Goodwin (@rachelgoodwinmakeup)

Much like flared pants remind us of the ’70s, a longer bob (lob) haircut complete with flipped-out ends has a retro feel that anyone with shorter hair should be running to replicate.

Take Emma Stone for example, who accepted her Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture award at the 2024 Golden Globes flaunting a blunt copper crop with flipped-out ends. Stone’s stylist Mara Roszak used products from her haircare line, Rōz, to give the Poor Things actress lifted roots and a long-lasting hold to ensure her flared ends didn’t fall flat during the show.

The side-parted micro-bob

Never underestimate how switching up your part can give you a whole new look. Case in point: Cailee Spaeny’s side-parted micro bob at the 2024 Golden Globes was quite the departure from the bouffant wigs she wore as the leading lady in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla.

With a side-swept soft curl and the remainder of her hair tucked behind her ear, the Golden Globe-nominated actress looked elegant as ever with this hairdo sculpted by Kiley Fitzgerald.

The “Rachel” 2.0

Remember Rachel Green’s layered lob from Friends? At this month’s Golden Globes, Jennifer Aniston revived her character’s signature haircut with a “Rachel 2.0” crop.

If you want your stylist to recreate this ’90s-esque cut, take notes from Aniston’s stylist Chris McMillan, who described the look as having a “soft blunt perimeter for the length and invisible layers throughout” on Instagram. He then went on to list the products used to prep for this style, which included a shampoo, conditioner, hair paste and oil from Lolavie — the haircare line Aniston launched in 2021.

Flipped-out ends

A post shared by Miles Jeffries (@milesjeffrieshair)

Think super-cropped bobs are too short to be styled? Think again! Pair this length with flicked ends for chic, cool-girl vibes.

On the 2024 Golden Globes red carpet, Golden Globe winner Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) sported a middle-parted nano-bob styled by Miles Jeffries with flipped-out ends. To test this look out for yourself, all you’ll need to do is straighten your hair with a flat iron as usual — but flip the outwards, instead of making one completely straight pass.

The Roaring ’20s crop

Adding a little curvature to your bob cut with soft finger waves and C-curls is a surefire way to instantly elevate your look. Past Lives actress Greta Lee’s 2024 Golden Globes hairdo, styled by Jenny Cho, was fully giving Roaring ’20s Gatsby girl, and we adored it. Not one hair was out of place, and it was an absolute high-gloss masterpiece.

If you ask us, this Jazz age-inspired style will forever stand the test of time.

The lived-in bob

A post shared by Aviva Jansen Perea (@hairbyaviva)

Keeping up with a bob can feel like a lot of maintenance at times, but if worn the right way, you can use the slept-in, tousled look to your advantage. Just ask America Ferrera!

In an interview with Byrdiehairstylist Aviva Perea revealed that her goal for the Barbie actress’s 2024 Golden Globes look was something that appeared “a little more lived in,” as though Ferrera had styled her hair the previous day. To achieve this effortless-looking style, Perea went in with a flat iron and created slight flicks and bends.

The full-of-body bob

A post shared by SherriAnn Cole (@therealritabee)

Bobs can be big, bouncy, and full of body, too. At Sunday’s Golden Globes, Sheryl Lee Ralph perfectly demonstrated how to give a bob a boost of volume.

Ralph opted for a dramatic side part and a cascade of lush curls styled by SherriAnn Cole for her red carpet look. For a sultry touch, the Abbott Elementary star’s bang was swept just over her eye.

The middle part crop

A post shared by Jenny Cho (@jennychohair)

Partial to a sharp middle part? Try emulating Maestro actress Carey Mulligan’s chic hairdo from this year’s Golden Globes. Also styled by Jenny Cho, it’s a hairdo minimalists will love.

To get this look, Mulligan’s bob was styled using an assortment of Briogeo products and tools, such as the Don’t Despair, Repair! leave-in treatment and the Vegan Boar Bristle Brush. To incorporate that classic glamour feel (which matched her 1949-inspired Schiaparelli dress), her chin-length hair was flipped under at the ends.

The old Hollywood lob

When your hair hits lob length, you may be at a loss for which look to try next. May we suggest going for an old Hollywood style? It should have a deep side part and an exaggerated S-wave to emphasize that silver screen-worthy vibe.

True to her signature look, Naomi Watts was a vision of timeless beauty at the 2024 Golden Globes with her own vintage-inspired lob, which playfully incorporated a mixture of both curled and straightened strands. Marki Shkreli, who has also styled Charlize Theron and Lily Collins’ hair, was the artist behind the look. What’s a red carpet without at least one nod to old Hollywood?

Some say “New year, new you!” We say: new year, new beauty resolutions! The flipping of the calendar means it’s officially time to refresh and reset our beauty regimens, so why not commit to a couple of beauty resolutions in the name of forming better habits this year?

Whether you’re looking to kick your nail-biting habit to the curb, determine your true undertone for better makeup matches, or find your signature scent, here are seven beauty resolutions to stick to for a prosperous year rich in self-care.

Happy New Year, and happy scrolling!

1. Find your true undertone, once and for all

Gone are the days of wearing makeup that doesn’t match your skin tone. 2024 will be the year you find your true shade by really knowing your undertone! TikToker @princessraquelle has summed up four simple tests—the vein test, the paper test, the sun test, and the jewelry test—to help you best determine your undertone.

For the vein test, you’ll check the veins in your face, neck and wrist to see what colour they are. Blue-toned veins suggest a cool undertone, green veers warm, and a combination of both leans neutral. For the paper test, observe whether your skin appears pink (cool-toned) or yellow (warm-toned) when holding up a piece of paper next to your face in natural light. The sun test will reveal your undertone by considering whether you burn or tan in the sun (burning indicating a cooler undertone, and tanning suggesting a warmer one).

Lastly, take a look at your jewellery preferences. If you think gold looks better on you, then you may have a warm undertone. If you love the look of silver, your undertone may be cooler. This, of course, could also just be a matter of personal opinion, so be sure to run through all four tests for the best results!

With over 50 shades that cover every undertone from peach to golden, Haus Labs’ viral Triclone Skin Tech Medium Coverage Foundation with Fermented Arnica is truly inclusive. Once you’ve determined your undertone, we’re sure you’ll meet your makeup match here. Everyone say ‘thank you, Lady Gaga!’

2. Find your signature scent

There’s something incredibly chic about finding a signature scent that you can eternally rely on, but how do you find it? Taking notes from Asia Grant on TikTok, you’ll want to begin by knowing what your goal is. Ask yourself questions like: “How do I want to feel? How do I want to be remembered? How long do I want it to last?” And of course, keep your budget in mind.

Your next step will be to research scent families to determine if you’re more of a floral, fresh, woody or citrusy-scent sort of person (just to name a few). Once you’ve nailed that down, it’s time to secure a few samples and take those fragrances for a test drive! “When you’re looking for your signature scent, you really want to take that time to feel the scent on you, to live within the scent,” says Grant in her post. “See if you’re really identifying it with who you are as a person.”

Perfume discovery sets are the best way to sample a wide array of fragrances without committing to buying full-size bottles. With offerings from Burberry, Marc Jacobs, and Chloé, we love the look of this Sephora Favourites Deluxe Perfume Sampler set.

3. Stop biting your nails!

@signetbeauty Replying to @katiehecker07 How to stop nail biting & cuticle picking💅🚫😖🩸#nailcare #nailtutorial #nailvideos #nailbiting #cuticlecare ♬ original sound – Signet Beauty

There’s no better time than the start of a new year to break bad habits, and one of them should be biting your nails! “Doing your nails and taking care of your hands is one of those things that we really do for ourselves, and it’s something so small but it makes you feel so put together instantly,” shares the Signet Beauty account on TikTok.

In the months ahead, keeping your nails well-manicured by pushing back, trimming and oiling up your cuticles will result in nicer-looking fingertips that will be harder to pick at, and will make you less likely to chew your nails off. Treating yourself to a manicure or a trendy set of DIY press-on nails will also help, because no one wants to waste money on a mani that’ll only be bitten off soon after, and press-ons will keep your natural nails out of sight and out of mind. Just think of all the manicures you’ll be able to pull off by the end of the year…

Press-on nails are cost-effective, easy to use, and just as gorgeous as manis crafted at a salon. These Bare but Better press-ons by imPRESS are a must-have for nail-biters looking to leave that habit behind in 2023.

4. Keep your makeup brushes clean with a simple routine

If you can’t remember the last time you washed your makeup brushes, consider this your sign to do it more frequently in 2024. We know it is a pain, but once you find a simple routine — like this one posted by @by.emmaleah — it’ll become a total breeze and your skin will thank you for it.

For the deepest clean, start by soaking your brushes for a few minutes in a bowl full of water and micellar water. Then, reach for a bar of Dove soap and swirl your brushes around the soap under running water until clean. “These [soaps] are so cheap and affordable but they work so well at removing the makeup from brushes it’s honestly insane, and I’ve tried so many expensive makeup brush cleaners before,” explains the TikToker. Quick, easy to do, and easy on the pockets!

As per the recommendation from the TikTok above, you’ll want to keep Dove bar soap on deck for makeup brush cleaning. Plus, if you’ve got sensitive skin, you can shop these beauty bars in a fragrance-free, sensitive-skin-safe version.

5. Treat your hair with masks frequently

Prioritize your hair’s health this year by committing to the frequent use of hair masks for healthier, stronger, more glossy-looking locks. To achieve the best results, be sure to buy a mask that suits your hair type best.

According to this TikTok posted by @vidalabsau, fine hair types should stick to lightweight masks inclusive of ingredients like aloe vera and argan oil that’ll hydrate the hair without weighing it down. Thicker hair will require more “heavy duty” ingredients like shea butter and coconut oil, while those with curly hair should look out for labels that read “deep moisture” to help keep curls defined and moisturized. Lastly, anyone with an oily hair type should reach for “clarifying” masks, and colour-treated hair types will need reparative masks to help nurse your hair back to health after intense dye jobs.

If you need a total reset from holiday party hairstyling, kick off the new year with an intensely hydrating hair mask like this one by Moroccanoil. In just five minutes, the main argan oil ingredient works to nourish the hair for improved texture, hydration, and manageability.

6. Swap pimple popping for pimple patching

Pimple popping is so last year. Make 2024 the year you stop popping your zits, and start treating them with pimple patches instead. “Popping your pimple will not actually get rid of the problem, it actually might push pus and bacteria deeper into the skin,” explains general practitioner and aesthetic doctor Raj Arora on TikTok. “This can result in more swelling and redness, and actually makes the pimple more visible.

Not to mention, as she shares, it can also lead to the development of scabs, redness, scarring and hyperpigmentation. In addition to preventing you from picking, pimple patches can also work to heal your blemishes at the same time. Fight the urge to pop your pimples for the betterment of your skin and cover them up instead! You won’t regret it.

These cult-loved pimple patches arrived in Canada last fall, and we’ve been happy to have them ever since. Made with medical-grade hydrocolloid, these Mighty Patch patches are designed to extract impurities, while protecting the skin from picking in the process. As the brand says, “Don’t pop it, patch it!”

7. Commit to SPF all year round — even during the winter

@dermalogicacanada

Is SPF necessary during the winter months? Absolutely! Winter doesn’t mean you’re safe from the sun’s UV rays. Surprisingly, snow can reflect a whopping 80% of these rays, elevating your risk of sunburn and skin damage. So, even in the cold, don’t skip that sunscreen! #spf #winterskincare #dermalogicacanada #sunscreen

♬ original sound – Dermalogica Canada – Dermalogica Canada

Be honest, did you wear SPF all year long in 2023? We won’t call you out if you didn’t, but moving forward, it’s always important to include this step in your beauty routine. Yes, even in the dead of winter. In a TikTok posted by Dermalogica Canada, we learn why. “Did you know that snow can reflect up to 80% of UV rays?” asks the Dermalogica rep in the post. Needless to say, in order to keep our skin protected from potential premature aging and skin cancer brought on by UV rays, make sure you’re applying sunscreen all year-round.

As seen in the above TikTok, Dermalogica’s Dynamic Skin Recovery moisturizer is packed with SPF 50 to help keep our skin safe and protected. Doubling as a sunscreen and a moisturizer, it’s knocking out two important skincare steps in one go.

As we reflect on the beauty trends that defined the year, one thing is abundantly clear: There was an insatiable appetite for food-themed makeup and manicures. On the menu this year were nails inspired by colourful summer fruits and makeup that mimicked our favourite autumnal beverages (not to mention fashion!). Everywhere we looked, it was a total feast for the eyes.

When Pantone announced its 2024 Colour of the Year, we wondered if beauty’s fixation with food-inspired looks may have informed the decision. Meet “Peach Fuzz,” the soft, pinky-orange hue that you’ll be seeing everywhere in 2024.

As for the endless menu that was 2023 beauty trends, we can’t deny that some of these looks have serious staying power. Ahead, five of the most delicious 2023 beauty trends that satisfied our sweetest cravings this past year.

Cherry mocha tips

A post shared by Anahi Victoria (@avrnailswatches)

Whether it was our scarlet stockings, the colour of our lips, or the hue adorning our fingertips, no one seemed to be exempt from the reign of red that ruled colour trends this year. With their deep rouge colour balanced out by a hint of chocolate brown, “cherry mocha” nails were in perfect alignment.

Once autumn arrived, we could hardly scroll through our Instagram feeds or TikTok FYPs without spotting cherry mocha-coloured tips. As festive soirée season approached, this sultry shade felt fittingly festive. If you’re not typically one for more fiery shades of red, this vampy alternative may be up your alley in 2024.

Latte makeup

Thanks to its chic bronze vibe and a stamp of approval from trendsetter Hailey Bieber, “latte makeup” went viral over the summer and is still going strong. The monochromatic makeup look encapsulates the cozy comfort of the creamy beverage with layers of warm brown eyeshadow and a bronze contour overtop a glowy base.

The virality of this trend is thanks to the fact that its neutral palette makes it subtle enough for everyday wear, and it’s pretty easy to pull off. Not to mention it’s universally flattering on all skin tones and looks stunning on absolutely everyone. What makes a trend more appealing than that?

Blueberry milk nails

A post shared by essie (@essie)

Pastels will forever be a beauty staple during the spring and summer months, but this year one delicate shade of blue was more popular amongst manicure trends than the rest. You knew this was coming: blueberry milk nails! Powdery blue nail polish proved to be surprisingly wearable thanks to its “milky” hue, and incredibly trendy because, well, it’s just plain cute.

As seen on Sofia Richie, Dua Lipa and Zendaya, this manicure trend was one you simply couldn’t miss in 2023. Though we’re sure we’ll eventually drop the “blueberry milk” from its name and revert to simply asking for “baby blue” at the salon, we suspect this colour trend is one that will never be too far away when the warm weather hits.

Strawberry girl makeup

A post shared by Jillian Lansky (@theaugustdiaries)

Hailey Bieber strikes again. What started as a marketing strategy for Rhode’s Strawberry Glaze Peptide Lip Treatment turned into a full-fledged beauty trend in, like, an afternoon. A beautiful blend of the biggest 2023 beauty trends (rosy cheeks, coquette beauty and balletcore), this pink, flushed, sweet, dewy trend had us blushing.

Featuring brushed up, fluffy brows, faux freckles, glowy skin and of course, cheeks and lips — and even eyelids — coloured with a natural looking pink sheen, strawberry girl makeup involved a finished look that made us appear like we’d spent the day frolicking through a field of berries. What’s not to love?

Tomato girl makeup

@megsircar perfect summer look 🍅 #tomatogirlsummer #tomatogirlmakeup #tomatogirl #makeuptrends #browngirlmakeup #browngirlmakeuptutorial #tomatogirls #saiebeauty #saiebeautyblush #supergoop #supergoopglowscreen #supergoopsunscreen #olioeossobalm ♬ Somethin’ Stupid – Frank Sinatra & Nancy Sinatra

We know what you’re thinking: How is this any different than strawberry girl makeup? The truth is, it’s technically not. But in vibes, it *totally* is. While strawberry girl frolics through a field, tomato girl is busy ordering her third negroni and slurping pasta pomodoro (tomatoes, hello?!) at her favourite restaurant in Positano.

Like we said earlier this summer, the tomato girl aesthetic is “inspired by the juicy produce on the coast of Italy; the style encapsulates the laid-back energy that comes from summering in Europe. It’s about dressing not for the life you have, but the life you want.” Buon appetito!

In the world of skincare ingredients, retinol is like a miracle worker. With its ability to refine skin texture, treat acne, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, it’s no wonder there’s been a boom in retinol-powered products in recent years.

First Aid Beauty’s new 0.3% Retinol Complex Serum with Peptides bottles up everything we love about this game-changing ingredient without leaving behind the flakiness and redness that traditional retinol can cause. While a sensitive skin-safe concoction of retinol and retinyl propionate gets to work and keeps the skin hydrated for up to 24 hours, the peptides within this formula support a strong skin barrier.

Whether you’ve got naturally curly hair or you’ll be recreating this corkscrew look with an ultra-thin curling wand, soirée season is prime time to put your best head of curls forward.

To achieve this mane-like look styled by Irinel de León on Madison Pettis, split your hair down the middle to create a centre part. Then, incorporate a little party-ready sparkle by adding bedazzled hair clips or bobby pins on either side of your head.

Slick it with glitter

During the Julien Macdonald Fall/Winter 2023 show, models sashayed down the catwalk with sleek buns and slick backs spattered with glitter — and the look has lived rent-free in our minds ever since.

What begins with a simple hairstyle you’ve likely been wearing all year long is instantly upgraded with a spritz of glitter that requires next to no effort to pull off. Try a retro ponytail

2023 was unofficially the year of Barbie, and there’s no better way to close it out than by paying homage to the blonde icon one last time. Channel a vintage iteration of the doll with this retro pony, as seen on Barbie star Margot Robbie at the 2023 Gotham Awards.

Like Robbie, whose pony was crafted by her go-to hairstylist Bryce Scarlett, opt for a side-parted bang that swoops across the face, and is then tucked behind your ear. To best capture that vintage feel, flip the ends of your pony with a flat iron to achieve a doll-like flick.

Opt for an infinity bun

Anyone who shows up to a New Year’s celebration with an infinity bun like this one by celebrity hairstylist Hayley Logan is sure to impress party-goers and leave them wondering, How did you do that?

What they won’t know is that this seemingly intricate chignon is easier to recreate than it looks. Once you’ve secured a sleek, low pony, begin to twist it. Wrap the hair clockwise around your base, as you would a traditional bun, and then pin it in place. Then, with the remainder of your twisted ponytail, create a loop around your index finger and pin it in place above your bun. Très chic, non?

You can never have too many bobby pins—especially when going for experimental styles like this one. Goody’s slide-proof bobby pins have never let us down, and we love that this value pack comes with 60 of them.

As stars rolled up to the premiere of Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland caught our eye with this Marilyn Monroe-inspired bob styled by Devante Turnbull. As much as we loved her chrome ensemble complete with a built-in cone bra, we couldn’t take our eyes off her full-of-body bob.

From old-fashioned roller sets and pin curls to big-barrelled curling wands, there is no one particular way to achieve this look. As long as it’s full of volume with an air of old Hollywood glamour, you’re doing it right. If you went the bob route this year, take it to another level by recreating this look.

Bubble ponytails like this one are already a step above your average pony, but the pièce de résistance here is a show-stopping hair accessory — or three. We adorn our ears, necks, and hands with dainty gold and silver treasures, so why not our hair?

Who doesn’t need a little brightness boost once winter strikes? We sure do. Like an answered prayer, Glow Recipe’s Cloudberry Bright Essence Toner arrived this week to revive our dull, dehydrated skin and keep it glowing for the long winter ahead.

The star of the formula is cloudberry concentrate ingredient, which is rich in vitamins C and E and allows for better absorption into the skin while working to brighten and hydrate. Plus, CoQ10 and rice water team up to support collagen production, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and soothe skin.

This multi-tasking toner can be worked into your routine right after cleansing for maximum results, as it also functions as a serum booster. The result? Radiant, even-toned skin that’ll drink this product right up.

The art of applying eyeshadow is one that, like most things, requires practice to perfect. Fortunately, if you’re looking to up your glam game, the internet is brimming with in-depth eyeshadow tutorials designed to guide us through the process of pulling off intricate lid looks like a professional.

So whether you’re an amateur artist or you actually are a pro looking to polish your craft and get some inspo for new looks, we’ve sourced five easy-to-follow tutorials that detail the coolest techniques to try out there. From the cut crease to the halo eye, here are the eyeshadow looks we’ve been loving, and the products you’ll need to replicate them.

Try halo eyes

The “halo eye” technique gives off an ethereal aura that professional makeup artists turn to often, and for good reason. Though it’s fairly simple to accomplish, the result is a mesmerizing ombré effect of matte and glitter shades. And it looks masterfully crafted every time.

On TikTok, makeup artist Jonathon Thorpe walks us through his take on the halo eye technique. For the base of the look, Thorpe recommends laying down either a dark-coloured liquid, pencil, or cream matte shade to the inner and outer corners of the eye in a dome-like shape—avoiding the centre of the lid. “This works well in two ways,” he explains. “One is that it’s gonna create something slightly tacky on the lid that the eyeshadow is going to stick to, and it also puts down a lot of pigment quite quickly so you don’t need to blend and add as much eyeshadow.” Next, buff out your base with a fluffy brush and apply a similarly shaded eyeshadow over top of the outer and inner corners.

When you’re ready to incorporate your middle shade—which is typically a glitter but can also just be a much lighter colour—dip into your desired pigment with your finger and apply to the centre of the lid. Follow up with an eyeshadow a few shades lighter than your base colour along the inner and outer corners of the eye for a seamless finish. If you’re prone to swiping one glittery shade all across your lids, this look will take your artistry to the next step.

Going for a glittery halo eye like Thorpe? Infused with light-reflecting pearls and refined micro-glitter, Hourglass’ Scattered Light Glitter Eye Shadow in the shade “Vivid” was made for this technique.

Wear a soft cut crease

@aminaplease

Replying to @Wumi | Life & Style perfect alternative to sharp cut-creases, a soft diffused one! #eyeshadowtutorial #blackgirlmakeuptutorial #softglam #beginnermakeup

If you’ve been exposed to the world of glam for long enough, you’ve probably heard the term “cut crease” being thrown around here and there. With its sharp “cut” of light-coloured eyeshadow over the lid contrasted by a darker, flared-out shade in the crease, we’ve all been intimidated by this striking eye look. The good news? It’s not just reserved for the pros. With a little bit of eyeshadow and concealer you can pull off this optical illusion eye.

Sephora Squad 2023 inductee and TikTok influencer @aminaplease is known on the app for her dramatic cut crease and flawless glam, so we knew we could rely on her beginner-friendly eyeshadow tutorial for this technique. Start off by reaching for a neutral-toned eyeshadow palette, and pick up a shade that isn’t quite as dark as black, but still contrasts against your skin tone. Buff this out all over the lid and work it up to your eye socket.

For the pièce de résistance, take one of your lightest shades of concealer and begin to apply a small amount of the product over the lid to start creating that “cut” effect. “The key is not to pack on the product. I’m really trying to dispense it as much as I can using as little product as possible so it doesn’t get cakey,” the influencer explains in her video. Reaching for your eyeshadow palette once more, opt for an off-white shade mixed with a dab of your concealer and pack it onto the lid over your base. As you work the shadow in, you’ll begin to see that dramatic “cut” in your crease take shape. Lastly, use a mid-brown toned eyeshadow as a transitional shade to diffuse the outer corner and refine the dark edge of your crease. Congratulations, you’ve officially cut your crease like a pro!

Though you can complete a cut crease usually virtually any eyeshadow shades you’d like, neutrals are always a safe bet. The newly reformulated NYX Professional Makeup Ultimate Shadow Palette in “Warm Neutrals” boasts 16 easy-to-wear shades you’re bound to reach for when recreating this look.

Experiment with abstract artwork

@meicrosoft

@esantoinette taught me this eyeshadow technique and I haven’t been the same ever since #eyeshadowtutorial #makeup #beauty

♬ original sound – maeve – ciri.ae

The most intricate eyeshadow looks out there may require the use of precisely shaped brushes, but some of the coolest ones can be created using only your hands. Take Toronto-based makeup mastermind Mei Pang, for example, who created this shimmering swirl of abstract art on her eyelids using her fingertips as the main tool.

To recreate Pang’s look, begin by picking up a light shimmery shade on the tip of your finger. The warmth of your finger will allow for the pigment to be easily dispersed over your lids, and can also allow for more unique placement and shapes to be formed on the eye. Dive right in and begin to swipe your glitter over the lid, near the inner corner, and beneath your brow bone. Then, going in with a makeup brush, trace the outer edges of your shimmer shades with a darker eyeshadow to add depth and dimension.

If you’re looking to get even more experimental, you can take these shadows beyond the limitations of your eyelid, extending them above your brow, down your nose, and underneath the eye. What we love about looks like this is that you can truly rely on your own creativity to inform the look, making it fully foolproof.

When Danessa Myricks launched the Lightwork V: I Am Palette for Eyes and Face earlier this year, we knew it’d be one glitter lovers couldn’t live without. Aquatic blue shades “Strong” and “Brave” will be your go-tos as you follow along Pang’s eyeshadow tutorial.

How to: eyeshadow for hooded eyes

@elenarachitskaya

Let me start by saying that hooded eyes are not bad eyes 👀 They just need a bit of a different technique of makeup Can you see the difference at the end? My biggest tip for hooded eyes is “LOOK STRAIGHT INTO YOUR MIRROR” 😅✍🏻 Product Lineup @toofaced: 📌 cosmic crush eye shadow palette 📌 lip injection maximum plump extra strength lip plumper gloss (yummy bear) 📌 mascara better than sex doll lashes #hoodedeyes #hoodedeyesmakeup #eyeshadow #eyemakeuptutorial #eyeshadowtips #howtomakeup #eyesmakeup #makeuphacks #sephorasrbija

♬ GASLIGHT – INJI

Having hooded eyelids means getting creative with how you apply shadow. Don’t just take our word for it, BeautyToker Elena Rachitskaya’s hooded eyeshadow tutorial went viral reaching over one million views—with a comment section full of satisfied viewers with hooded lids.

First, Rachitskaya recommends taking a warm, mid-toned eyeshadow shade on a fluffy brush that is the right size for your eyes over your lids as you look straight into the mirror. This way, you can see whether or not the shadow is visible from a head-on view, or if you need to bring it up higher. Continuing on, you can add depth to the look using darker shades and smaller brushes along the outer corner, undereye, and lash line.

For the final eyeshadow step, use a darker eyeshadow to create a softly diffused “new crease” slightly above where your natural crease is, and apply a light shadow to the inner corner of the lid where it’s visible. If you’re feeling fancy, pop a glittery shade onto the inner corners. The before and after results of Rachitskaya’s left us stunned and assured that having hooded eyes is not the problem. It’s all about application, and being sure to check how things are looking straight on as you move forward with your routine.

To ensure you’re all equipped for an eyeshadow look that requires the use of multiple brushes, you should always have your own collection on hand. From angled shapes for sharp lines and fluffy blushes to help blend products all over the lid, this 5-piece Ultimate Eyes set by e.l.f Cosmetics has got you covered.

Lift your look with a light-coloured eyeshadow

LEVEL UP your makeup with this quick & easy step! 🪄 This will lift the cheekbone, clean up the eye makeup, and give an overall polished effect 🥰 #makeup #eyeshadow #tutorial #makeuphacks #hack #paintedbyspencer

♬ original sound – SPENCER

One of our favourite eyeshadow techniques doesn’t involve a wash of glitter on the eyelids or a cut crease, rather, it’s all about what happens when you’ve completed the main look. This eyeshadow tutorial, posted Painted by Spencer on TikTok, has garnered over 10 million views since it was posted earlier this year, and it’s the finishing touch you didn’t know your glam has been missing all this while. In just a few seconds, this method creates the illusion of lifted cheekbones and pulls everything together with a more polished finish.

Taking an eyeshadow several shades lighter than your natural skin tone on a flat-ended brow brush, you’ll want to stamp it just beneath your winged liner (if you’re wearing it) or the outer edge of your eyeshadow look. “You’ll notice I’m taking that lower lash line and following it straight outwards,” says Spencer in his post. “I really like doing this because it lifts the cheekbone and highlights it but also cleans up the eye makeup.” Use your fingertips to soften up the edges to make sure its all blended out smoothly, and you’re all set.

The Anastasia Beverly Hills Soft Glam palette is one every glam gal should have on deck. Whether you’re a newbie looking to start easy or a pro who needs to travel light, this half-size Soft Glam II palette will make a divine addition to your collection. Plus, the shade “Tempura” is exactly what this lifting technique calls for.

As predicted by Pantone’s highly anticipated Colour of the Year announcement, 2024 will be the year of “Peach Fuzz.” “A warm and cozy shade highlighting our desire for togetherness with others and the feelings this creates, Pantone 12-1023 Peach Fuzz presents a fresh approach to a new softness,” reads the announcement in an Instagram caption posted by Pantone. “Highly suggestive of good taste, Pantone 13-2023 Peach Fuzz is a gift to the sense, creating a symbiotic relationship between our sense of taste, sight, touch, and scent.” Following this announcement, we imagine a collective sigh of relief from beauty enthusiasts around the world, as this colour trend translates much easier to glam than, say, 2010’s “Turquoise” or 2022’s “Very Peri.” The Peach Fuzz hue proves to be a universally gorgeous and easily wearable shade that can work its way into our beauty regimes with relative ease.

As we near the end of the year, it’s safe to say that some of the best beauty tips we picked up over the past 12 months have come from TikTok. Do we now get to say that the hours we spent scrolling on TikTok were all worth it? Perhaps not. But we can say that we’ll be heading into 2024 with a wealth of #beautytok knowledge that has improved our pamper routines for the better, from learning Pat McGrath‘s perfect lipstick trick to Erin Parson’s black eyeliner hack this month.

Ahead, we’re ending the year off with a well-rounded quintet of makeup and hair tips and tricks including, but not limited to, fighting frizz during sweater weather using a satin scarf, and learning how to “prime your brush” for foundation the Katie Jane Hughes way.

Try Erin Parsons’ clever black eyeliner hack

@erinparsonsmakeup

To be a fan of makeup artist and vintage cosmetics collector Erin Parsons is to know that her glam is most often accompanied by flawlessly drawn-on eyeliner that appears ultra-black. Thankfully this month on TikTok, one follower on the app asked Parsons the question we’ve all been dying to know the answer to. “Erin, how is your eyeliner SO black? Is it multiple layered products?” they commented on one of her videos. In response, Parsons posted an entire tutorial detailing her black eyeliner hack — which has already gone viral with two million views so far.

“Layering is key to ultra black eyeliner,” reads the title of the tutorial. And after watching the clip, which involves three layers of eyeliner, this certainly appears to be true. First, Parsons draws on her desired liner shape around the rim of her eye with a Westman Atelier pencil liner, leaving a little gap at the outer corner to elongate the eye before using a thin brush to help shape it further. She follows this step up by blotting over the eyeliner, and setting it with powder, using what she refers to as the “wet-dry” technique. For the second layer of eyeliner, she reaches for a waterproof pencil and traces over her first layer.

“The reason I don’t start with a waterproof pencil is because it’s really hard to manipulate. If you make a mistake, you’re kind of stuck with it,” says Parsons in her post. Lastly, she suggests using either a water-activated paint or a gel liner to set everything and solidify that ultra-dark finish of this black eyeliner hack. Should you encounter any slip-ups along the way as you attempt to recreate Parsons’ look, know that it’s nothing a little micellar water and a pointed Q-tip can’t fix!

As seen in Parsons’ tutorial, this Westman Atelier Eye Love You Clean Kôhl Eyeliner pencil, or one like it, is the first and most important product needed for this technique. “Because it is not a waterproof pencil, it’s really easy to manipulate,” says Parsons in her TikTok post. Using an eyeliner that can be blended out is key for nailing the base of this black eyeliner hack.

Preserve your curls when getting dressed with this headscarf trick

Curly girls (and really, anyone who spends more than a minute styling their hair) all know the dreaded moment when your makeup is finally complete, your hair has been styled, and it’s time to throw on a sweater during the winter months. You can almost guarantee that once your clothes have been tugged over your head, you’ll be left with unwanted frizz, a disrupted curl pattern, and makeup marks around the rim of your sweater. To this dishevelled hair dilemma, I say, ‘No more!’

To pull off this hair-saving hack posted by @hermela_solomon, you’ll first need to grab a satin scarf — which you’ll likely already have if you’ve got textured hair. The satin material will ensure the scarf can glide over your hair with less friction, and help to prevent frizz. All you’ll need to do is rest the scarf over your freshly styled hair and pull your sweater on over top. In the end, your hair stays intact and so does your makeup. How’s that for a win-win situation?

Whether you want to wear it as a bandana, scarf, headband or bonnet, this Multi-way Sleep Scarf by Kitsch is a staple for anyone with curly hair. Its 100 percent satin charmeuse material makes it our top pick for this trick.

Remedy dry, creasing concealer with this technique

@daceycash

some tips on application to help prevent under eye concealer from creasing #undereyeconcealer #concealercracking #concealertutorial #concealerhack

♬ original sound – DACEY CASH

The colder it gets outside, the drier your skin can become. This is particularly irritating when you discover that after having gone through the trouble of completing a full face of makeup, the dryness of your under-eye area is causing your concealer to crease, settle into fine lines, or crumble. To remedy these dry under-eye disasters, I’m taking notes from Dacey Cash on TikTok. “It really comes down to prep,” she explains in her post.

First, Cash begins by warming up a small amount of moisturizing eye cream between her fingers, before dabbing it underneath the eye and pressing it into the skin. Then, she gives her skin a moment to absorb the product before going in with the next product. “A lot of these issues [that arise] when you find your makeup kind of migrating around the under-eye space or even kind of settling into lines is honestly [caused by] a little bit too much product,” explains Cash. If you’re trying this technique, follow up these steps with your foundation of choice, avoiding the under-eye area.

Next, you’ll want to mix an eyeshadow primer and your favourite concealer between your fingers and apply the mixture under the eye. “The primer is really going to help the concealer set on its own, therefore you’re going to need less powder,” she says. “And, it’s also going to help create a little bit of a barrier between the oils in your skin from breaking down the concealer throughout the day.” To smooth out any creasing that may have occurred, look upwards and blend your concealer out with a brush. Lastly, lock it all in with a bit of powder using a fluffy brush as you continue to look up.

Our pick is Nivea’s Q10 Power Anti-Wrinkle and Firming Eye Cream. The Q10 coenzyme ingredient paired with creatine within its formula team up to keep skin looking smooth and nourished ahead of makeup application.

Achieve holiday party hair in seconds with this trick

Where holiday party hair is concerned, few styles are as chic as the French twist. Truly timeless and elegant, this style is a safe bet for any social gathering this yuletide season, and we’ve found a hack that makes it easier than ever to achieve. In a TikTok posted by Carrie Muir, which is now approaching one million views, the hairstylist demonstrates how a simple ponytail can be transformed into this classic French updo in less than a minute.

Once you’ve secured a ponytail at the back of your head, loosen your hair tie a couple of inches, as though you were going to take it off. Then, create a gap in the hair between your scalp and your hair tie so that you can loop your ponytail through. Tie off the end of your ponytail, and begin to roll it inwards toward the base of the pony to create that “twist” look. Pin your twist in place with a couple of decorative bobby pins, et voilà!

While you could use any old bobby pin for this hair hack, these glittery pins by Goody will take the look to another level during soirée season. Did we mention they’re slide-proof?

Get a flawless face base, the Katie Jane Hughes way

@katiejanehughes

You’re putting your foundation on wrong try priming the brush!!! #fyp#foundation#kjhtaughtme

♬ original sound – Katiejanehughes

When a professional makeup artist like Katie Jane Hughes talks, I listen. Hughes — who does glam for stars like Hailey Bieber and just launched her own makeup brand — appeared on my TikTok feed last month sharing this flawless face base hack, and I instantly knew I needed to share it in this month’s edition of TikTok beauty hacks. Her tutorial, which explains how to “prime your brush,” kicked off with a warning that caught my attention.

“Don’t put your foundation on like this,” she says in her post as she swipes a brush along her jawline in long, cakey strokes. “Put it on like this,” she suggests as she demonstrates swirling the brush around her palm in rapid circular motions. “By getting the product into the brush thoroughly and then saturating the face with what’s in this brush, you don’t have to fight to blend all of that product,” she explains.

As we all prep for party-approved glam, this hack couldn’t have come at a better time. “You will find that you get better wear out of it, your makeup looks even more natural, and it will look like you got your makeup done by a professional makeup artist,” says Hughes. Consider me convinced!

Made for blending and buffing, this foundation brush by Vieve is the same one used by Hughes in her TikTok video. Thanks to its super soft bristles, any product you apply using this brush will go on flawlessly and streak-free.

Sparkle season is upon us! While we’ll no doubt be slipping into sequin-encrusted dresses, tying our hair up into chic chignons and sporting crimson lips, extra attention must be paid to the eyes, which deserve to be dolled up with holiday-approved eye makeup looks.

You see, as one of the most expressive features on the human body, the eyes serve as an unparalleled canvas for glittery eyeliner, frosty eyeshadow, and festive appliqués to thrive. Come holiday party season, let your eyes do the talking in a room filled with holly-jolly party-goers.

To inspire your next holiday eye makeup look, we rounded up eight show-stopping and shimmer-packed lid looks, with appearances from your favourite stars like Hailey Bieber, Simone Ashley, and Vanessa Hudgens. Plus, the must-have beauty buys you’ll need to test out these eye makeup looks yourself.

Sugar plum fairy eyeshadow

The beauty community has had quite an appetite for food-inspired glam lately, and apparently, so has Hailey Bieber. Just look to her glazed donut nails and latte makeup for proof! Her latest contribution to the trend, though, is one of our favourites so far. Enter: sugar plum fairy makeup.

Perfectly timed to party season, her sugar plum eyeshadow is satisfying all of our sugar and shine cravings. Following Bieber’s TikTok tutorial, this eye look layers bubblegum pink blush, shimmery shadows, and gloss on the lids for a multi-dimensional final result that is too sweet to resist.

Ready to recreate Bieber’s sugar plum fairy shadow look? Shop a glittery eyeshadow, like this one by Maybelline in the shade “I am Inspired” to ensure you nail the shimmer step.

Red ribbon graphic eyeliner

Bringing two of 2023’s biggest trends — red and ribbons — together, this graphic liner look is an ode to the past year of beauty. Ribbons are naturally evocative of the holiday season in all its gift-giving glory, and opting for a crimson-coloured liner is a chic way to try a festive eye look.

To replicate this look, draw on two “loops” and two “strings” just beneath the tail of your eyebrow to create your bow-tied ribbon. Then, connect it to a swipe of eyeliner on the lid, drawn on as you would a traditional winged eyeliner. For an extra dose of holiday spirit, pop a red rhinestone right over the centre of your ribbon.

Fenty Beauty’s Longwear Pencil Eyeliner in “Cherry Punk” is the one product you’ll need for your red ribbon liner. Creamy, long-wearing and smudge-resistant, this pencil is totally party-proof.

Twinkling stars may look impressive atop a Christmas tree, but they’ll look even better on your eyelids during festive soirée season.  Keeping with classic holiday colour codes for this look, a pine green eyeshadow base will ensure that your stars pop.

If you’re up for a challenge (or if you’re an advanced artiste), you can go ahead and freehand your stars using a white eyeliner. Or, if you need a little extra guidance, head to your local craft store in search of star-shaped stencils that you can fill in overtop the green eyeshadow.

For your base eyeshadow shade, opt for a highly pigmented forest-green hue. Make Up For Ever’s Artist Color Eye Shadow in the shade “ME-302” is a peacock metallic pigment with a single-swipe colour payoff, and we love it for this look.

Once you’ve got a base of bright red shadow on the lids, up the ante with a swipe of gloss for a fresh-from-the-runway feel. It’s cool girl-approved. Just add red tights.

Solidify your ruby red shadow base with a wash of Danessa Myricks’ Colorfix Liquid Pigment in “Primary Red.” When you’re not using this product on your eyelids, it can also be used on the lips and cheeks.

Put your artistry to the test with this crisp graphic liner look. Instead of drawing your eyeliner along the upper lashline as usual, take it up and over the eyelid just beneath the brow for a more experimental feel. Play with brush strokes of different lengths and thicknesses, topping it all off with miniature pearl and rhinestone accents for more of a high-glam look.

To recreate this look, you’ll need a highly pigmented, bright white eyeliner with a thin-tipped blush for flexibility and ease of use. NYX’s Vivid Matte Liquid Liner will get the job done.

If it’s subtle glam that you seek, replicating Vanessa Hudgens’ neutral eye with rhinestone accents carried out by Tonya Brewer is the way to go. Start with a classic cut crease using matte eyeshadow shades, then darken up the look with a midnight black eyeliner along the waterline and a dramatic wing that extends to the tail end of your brow.

For the final touch, pack a cluster of mini rhinestone appliqués into the inner corner of the eye, and just above your winged liner, ’Tis the season to shimmer and shine.

When working with embellishments, nothing makes things easier than going the self-adhesive route. Amazon is filled with rhinestone options like these that’ll stick to your lids with no glue, and no hassle.

This is Texture Talk, our long-running column that deep dives into the dynamic world of curly hair, from crowns of curls that are free flowing to strands that are tucked away in a protective style.

Worried about how your strands will handle the cold season ahead? Set aside your winter woes and invest in a hair-care routine that will not only protect your curls through blizzards and sub-zero temperatures but also ensure healthier, stronger hair once you emerge from your cocoon in the spring.

SheaMoisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Moisturizing Shampoo

SheaMoisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Moisturizing Shampoo

Extracted from the nuts harvested from West Africa’s shea trees, shea butter is a widely beloved ingredient that can bring moisture back into thirsty curls. Packed with vitamins A and E plus good-for-you fatty acids, it can remedy dryness fast. That’s because it seals moisture in and keeps dry winter air out. The powerhouse ingredient is at the core of textured-hair brand SheaMoisture, which was founded in 1991 by Richelieu Dennis as a tribute to his grandmother, Sofi Tucker. “Tucker sold shea butter in Sierra Leone in 1912, and we honour her vision by continuing to formulate with shea butter handcrafted by women in West Africa,” says Taydra Mitchell-Jackson, the brand’s CMO. SheaMoisture’s recently reformulated Raw Shea Butter collection features even more of the ingredient than its original formula, boosting its already impressive hydrating properties and making it a top contender for use during the winter months, when hair — especially curly hair — needs a little more love.

For centuries, the aloe vera plant has been sought out for a multitude of both cosmetic and medicinal purposes. From soothing sunburns to speeding up the healing time of cuts and scrapes, the gel of this powerful plant works like a charm on skin. It also happens to work wonders on curls. Celebrity hairstylist Alexander Armand describes aloe vera as an “untapped superstar ingredient” thanks to its hydrating and anti-frizz benefits for both hair and scalp. “Aloe vera is especially important during the winter months because hair tends to get brittle,” says Armand. While the moisturizing properties of this ingredient help keep brittleness at bay, it’s also lightweight enough to ensure that your curls stay bouncy. “It’s long-lasting, impactful and moisturizing, but it’s not going to weigh the hair down,” he says. “Your curls are still going to move.”

The Body Shop Jamaican Black Castor Oil Intense Moisture Mask

The Body Shop Jamaican Black Castor Oil Intense Moisture Mask, winter hair

Jamaican black castor oil is not your average castor oil. It’s an intensely nourishing ingredient that ensures your curls are safe from potential damage caused by the lack of hydration they may experience during winter. Sarah Adjepong-Duodu, co-creator of The Body Shop’s Jamaican Black Castor Oil range, says that while the process of extracting standard castor oil typically involves cold-pressing castor seeds, extracting Jamaican black castor oil involves roasting, muddling and mashing the seeds into a paste and then boiling it down into a thick, luxurious dark oil. This method allows the oil to deeply penetrate the hair and coat each curl from root to tip. “Curly hair doesn’t always get the benefit of excess oil from the scalp making its way down each strand because there are lots of kinks and grooves that it needs to make its way through,” she says. Because of how deeply Jamaican black castor oil is able to penetrate the hair shaft, each curl actually gets the nourishment it needs.

Black caviar can do a lot for an hors d’oeuvre spread, but it can do even more for curls. When celebrity hairstylist Jason Tavares was in the research stage of his first hair-care brand, BCavi, he chose black caviar as the hero ingredient of its first launch, Black Caviar Lux Serum. “Black caviar is the most nutritious of all the caviars,” he says. “It has an extra-potent boost of A, B, C and D vitamins.” When used in hair products, black-caviar extract has the ability to smooth the hair shaft and prevent breakage while locking in curly styles, eliminating the need to constantly wet and restyle hair. “In the summer, it’s easier to wash or wet your hair every single day,” says Tavares. But a wet head of hair isn’t something anybody wants to deal with in sub-zero temperatures. Black caviar eliminates that need entirely.
