If you caught the Usher concert 2024 Super Bowl last night, well, hats off to you. While it was certainly quite the game (so we heard) our eyes were on the celebs in the crowd — more specifically, the celeb beauty looks at the 2024 Super Bowl. And they did not disappoint.

Obviously we had our eyes peeled for Ms. Swift, who unsurprisingly showed up in a red lip — which isn’t just her signature lip colour, but also one of the Kansas City Chiefs’ colours. So, obviously. But she had another unexpected beauty trick up her sleeve, too. More on that below.

TayTay’s BFF, Blake Lively, attended the game in big, beautiful, bouncy curls (didn’t we tell you big hair was having a moment?), while Hailey Bieber debuted darker locks that already have a cutesy TikTok name (“chocolate syrup hair“— consider this our petition to bring back the good ol’, reliable word “brown”).

From Taylor Swift to Lady Gaga, these were our favourite celeb beauty looks at the 2024 Super Bowl.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift paired her red lipstick with a high ponytail that featured an accent braid along the side, and brow-skimming bangs. This is the singer’s second big appearance this month wearing an accent braid, so we can’t help but wonder: is this some kind of Easter egg, Swifties?

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga’s makeup artist Sarah Tanno created a beautiful rhinestone look for the star, that was a throwback to Gaga’s 2017 Super Bowl performance look. A makeup slay and a nostalgic moment? Definitely one of our fave celeb Super Bowl beauty moments this year.

Blake Lively and Ice Spice

Accompanying Taylor in her $1.8 million Super Bowl suite (!!!) were Ice Spice and Blake Lively, who both looked stunning as always in gorgeous curls and nude lipstick.

Kim Kardashian

Speaking of signature beauty looks, makeup artist Adam Burrell posted a video of Kim Kardashian getting ready to take in the big game, with her famous long, dark locks cascading down her back paired with a dark smoky eye

Beyoncé

You know what they say: the bigger the hair, the closer to god! Queen Bey’s hairstylist Neal Farinah used products from Beyoncé’s upcoming line Cécred (launching next week!!!) to create these big, bouncy waves. The stylist captioned the photos “Super Bowl Texan hair” — ultra-fitting for the release of Beyoncé’s two new country singles last night.

Winnie Harlow

Supermodel (and former FASHION cover star) Winnie Harlow debuted new choppy bangs last night, and we can’t stop thinking about them. Once again, we must ask, should we get bangs?

Hailey Bieber

Rocking her new dark hair and glossy brown lips (likely Rhode’s Peptide Lip Tint in “Espresso”), Hailey Bieber’s striking Super Bowl look was definitely one of our faves of the night.

Lana Del Rey

Donning her signature voluminous retro blowout, thick cat eye liner and matte nude lip in a mirror selfie on her Instagram Story, Lana Del Rey perfectly demonstrated that Super Bowl beauty can still be totally glam..

The Golden Globes mark the unofficial start of awards season, so for that reason alone, they’ll always have a special spot in our hearts. And then there’s everything else we love: the red carpet, the glitz, and of course, the glam. Below are some of our favourite Golden Globes 2024 beauty looks, from Hailee Steinfeld’s oh-so-’90s updo, to Florence Pugh’s always amazing hair, and Skai Jackson’s bold smoky eye.

Amanda Seyfried

Photography by Getty Images

With hairstylist Renato Campora and makeup artist Kate Lee in charge of glam, it’s no wonder Amanda Seyfried’s Golden Globes 2024 beauty look is so major. Featuring a bold purple smoky eye (to match her dress) and sleek, old Hollywood waves, Seyfried’s look is simultaneously modern yet totally timeless.

Hailee Steinfeld

Photography by Getty Images

Makeup artist to the stars Ash K Holm teamed up with hairstylist Ricky Fraser to create Hailee Steinfeld’s gorgeous look for the evening. A beautiful updo and nude lip perfectly complemented Steinfeld’s full brows and matte skin, for a finished look that screams ’90s supermodel.

Margot Robbie

Photography by Getty Images

The flowing hair, the pink lip gloss, the bronzed skin — what’s not to love about our Barbie’s Golden Globes 2024 beauty look? Celebrity colorist Jacob Schwartz used Olaplex products to keep Margot Robbie‘s blonde highlighted strands healthy and shiny. “I coined the term ‘spun with gold’ because the hair looks lit from within, where it’s all cohesively lighter,” says Schwartz. “There are still highlights and there’s still dimension, but it looks more effortless. We’ve gradually gone blonder with Margot, but we’ve been touching it up and keeping it fresh and bright.”

Skai Jackson

Photography by Getty Images

Proof that you can really never go wrong with a metallic smoky eye, loads of lashes and long, flowing waves. Thank you, Skai Jackson, for the much-needed reminder.

Florence Pugh

Leave it to our short ‘do queen Florence Pugh to show up to the Golden Globes with yet another look we want to copy immediately. Hairstylist Adir Abergel created the perfect faux hawk-meets-pompadour on Pugh, while makeup artist Alex Babsky used Valentino makeup for her flawless, natural-glam beat.

Andra Day

Photography by Getty Images

Latte makeup, anyone? Bronzed, beautiful and glowing, Andra Day’s makeup is a 10 out of 10.

Dua Lipa

Photography by Getty Images

We’re still enamoured with Dua Lipa‘s vibrant red strands, which is why we’re obsessed with this Golden Globes 2024 beauty look. The glowy, natural makeup (heavy on the blush) doesn’t hurt, either.

Greta Lee

Makeup artist Naoko Scintu used Sisley Paris makeup on Best Actress in a Limited Series nominee Greta Lee. Lee’s glam included a soft pink lip and an all-over, lit-from-within glow we’ll be thinking about for days. Hairstylist Jenny Cho finished the look with sleek retro-glam waves.

Issa Rae

Makeup artist Joanna Simkin used Charlotte Tilbury makeup and skincare products to transform Issa Rae into a glowing golden goddess. Quite fitting for the Golden Globes, non?

Pom Klementieff

Former FASHION cover star Pom Klementieff‘s brown smoky eye and nude lip combo was courtesy of celebrity makeup artist Mary Wiles, who used NARS product to achieve the timeless look. Paired with Klementieff’s chic bleached blonde pixie cut, styled by Marcia Lee, this is a beauty look we won’t soon forget.

Are we in our blonde hair era? Celebs with blonde hair, like Beyoncé, Rihanna and Selena Gomez, are proving that blondes really do have more fun, even in the chillier fall and winter months.

The colder months are traditionally when people transition their lightened locks to an ashy, icy blonde hue, or opt for a rich brunette gloss to embrace the darkness of the dreary winter season — but that isn’t entirely the case this year. Stars are instead opting for warmer hair colours as the temperatures dip, showing off freshly dyed blonde hair that leans more honey blonde than ash.

With access to the best hairstylists in the business (and the funds to support endless hair makeovers), celebrities can bounce from blonde to brunette with relative ease, either with pricey salon treatments or a roster of easily interchangeable custom wigs — and they’ve been taking full advantage of these luxuries lately.

From Bey’s winter-white platinum lengths to Kim Kardashian’s honey hue, here are all the celebs with blonde hair whose looks we’re loving lately.

Beyoncé

A post shared by R O K A E L (@rokaelbeauty)

In recent years, Beyoncé has lived in a perpetual state of being some shade of blonde. As the Break My Soul singer took her Renaissance Tour around the globe earlier this year, she stuck to her signature shade of honey bee — or, shall we say, honey Bey blonde for most shows, playing with various textures, from bone-straight to crimped and curled. And when she teased the arrival of a new hair brand earlier this year, we couldn’t help but wonder if it would cater to this colour in some way.

Though we did catch a few glimpses of brighter blonde hues at her Phoenix and Vancouver shows, her latest dye job presents the most dramatic hair transformation we’ve seen from her all year. At the Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé premiere earlier this week, Beyoncé debuted a head of sleek, ice-blonde hair styled by Neal Farinah, who is the mastermind behind her show-stopping Renaissance hair looks. No surprise, the Heated singer pulls off the ice queen look with ease.

Rihanna

This is not Rihanna’s first rodeo as a blonde, but boy, have we missed seeing the star embrace a honey hue. Be it a fire-red crop courtesy of her Loud era or a punk-ish mohawk circa 2009, this Bajan beauty is endlessly proving that no hairstyle is off-limits for her.

The Fenty Beauty founder sent fans into a frenzy earlier this month when she was papped in Los Angeles with a new hairdo featuring dark roots that flowed into a warm blonde shade for the first time in years. Rihanna has officially revived her blonde era, and we’re here for it.

Kim Kardashian

A post shared by Kim Kardashian (@kimkardashian)

Whether she’s filming a confessional clip for The Kardashians, shooting a new Skims campaign, or channelling Marilyn Monroe for the Met Gala, Kim Kardashian is always up for a momentary blonde moment. At the end of 2022, Kardashian posted a carousel of photos on Instagram of herself as a warm blonde captioned, “Thoughts on honey? Should I dye my hair platinum again or go dark?”

As we near the end of 2023, Kardashian has indeed come full circle and returned to honey bronde. Last week, she walked the GQ Man of the Year red carpet with new straight, sleek honey-toned hair, styled by her righthand hairstylist, Chris Appleton. She’s an honourary blond girlie, at this point.

Keke Palmer

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Seth Chernoff (@sethchernoff)

Earlier this month, Keke Palmer appeared on the BET Soul Train Awards purple carpet with a caramel-coloured bob full of bounce and volume. This layered look was the first of many styles Palmer sported throughout the night as the host of the show, and every single one was a slay.

Styled by Keshaun Williamson, known on Instagram as the Lace Assasin, Palmer’s blonde hairdo was a prime example of how wigs can be used to transition natural brunettes from dark to light, without needing to dye or damage their hair. All in favour of Palmer sticking with blonde, say I!

Selena Gomez

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Philipp Verheyen (@philippverheyen)

While other celebs have gone full-send blonde this winter, Selena Gomez is taking baby steps. In late November, celebrity hairstylist Philipp Verheyen posted a series of stunning snaps of the singer on Instagram, revealing that her naturally brunette hair has now been brightened up with honey highlights.

Though the Rare Beauty founder has had several stints as a blonde — and even one turn as a platinum blonde, at that — this subtle take is a headturner. Could this be the start of a slow descent into going fully light, like the rest of these celebs with blonde hair? Only time will tell.

“There’s still a stigma around the topic of AIDS,” says R&B singer Mya over the phone. “It’s best to lead with love but also information, awareness, education and community in order to achieve breakthroughs.” The Grammy Award-winning singer, who has been a long-time advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and the fight against AIDS, will be performing at the Bloor Street Entertains after-party at the Four Seasons Hotel Toronto, in support of the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research, later this week.

When Mya dials in, she’s one week away from her Toronto show and is calling from Germany, where she’s set to hit the stage before making her way to Canada. This year, the “Case Of The Ex (Whatcha Gonna Do)” singer celebrates 25 years in the music industry, and to commemorate the milestone, she launched deluxe editions of both her Mya and Moodring albums.

A post shared by MYA (@myaplanet9)

When Mya’s eponymous debut album dropped in 1998, the young artist appeared on the album cover sporting a true-to-the-’90s brown lip, with a cascade of curls peaking out beneath a brown bucket hat. When I ask if she’d always embraced her curls, she tells me her hair was once a source of insecurity, as she was often teased about her “different” curly texture.

“I worked so hard to try to figure out what products to use to ‘tame’ my hair because it was considered, at the time, unruly,” she explains. As the budding musician found a home in the arts, she says she felt “uplifted” about who she was and how her hair looked. “I eventually embraced my hair in my later teen years, when I was around healthier environments through the arts. We weren’t focused on vanity and exterior but more so a common goal,” Mya explains. “Being around healthy, positive-minded individuals that aren’t focused on vanity usually comes with less insecurity and ignorance.”

These days, Mya uses her hair as a form of self-expression. “Hair speaks volumes. Literally,” she laughs. “As an entertainer, I’m conveying art, and art is spoken in so many different ways and mediums, from colour palettes to hairstyles.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by MYA (@myaplanet9)

“The entertainment [industry] often requires you to show up as a character that you may not always be in your personal life,” says Mya. One of her favourite looks to sport on stage? A classic ponytail that keeps her hair out of her face. From loc and braid ponytails to natural and drawstring ponies in a variety of hues, lengths, and textures, Mya has mastered the art of the performance pony. “It’s my go-to, and I don’t necessarily need a hairstylist for it. It keeps the budget down,” she laughs.

Though folks often looks to celebrities for hair inspiration, Mya feels that many trends sparked by stars over the years stem from culture and reference things that have long been documented in history books and art. “Then, we see these looks show up, possibly in a music video, and we take it and make it our own.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by MYA (@myaplanet9)

As the natural hair movement has progressed, the singer says social media has sparked healthy hair conversations between women around the world. Mya says with this conversation comes increased self-awareness. “We sometimes try to achieve an unrealistic, ever-changing standard of beauty, when really, the hair that we were born with is ‘good hair’,” says Mya, who performed at Frizz Fest — a natural beauty festival designed to promote self-love through hair — this summer.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by MYA (@myaplanet9)

Mya’s concerns with hair health and overall wellness are a natural extension of her commitment to the vegan lifestyle. She first went vegan in 2014, and launched her own vegan transition guide for fans in 2018. In 2017, she walked the Grammy Awards red carpet in head-to-toe, cruelty-free attire. In the years since, she has remained vocal about her lifestyle choices via social media.

After 25 years in the spotlight, Mya continues to prove, through a plethora of philanthropic endeavours, that she is much more than just a musician.

When I meet Kyle Richards, the legendary cast member of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, I’m (quietly) shocked by how petite she is. Standing at five foot two inches tall, the actress-turned-reality-star greets me for our interview ahead of BravoCon in Las Vegas with her signature fast-talking cadence and down-to-earth charm. “One of the first things people say to me is, ‘I didn’t know you were so small!’” she later offers up. But Kyle, can you blame us?

My mistake in assuming her stature is a result of the powerful presence she commands on screen; a self-assuredness that’s made her something of a reality TV icon. “Honestly, there’s always someone coming for me,” she says matter-of-factly. So, over the course of 13 seasons, she’s crafted a lofty defence. “What brings me the most confidence is my hair. And you have to have a lot of confidence doing something like this and going into a lion’s den.”

Indeed, Kyle Richards’s hair has long been regarded as some of Bravo’s best. She famously had a salon installed into her home. She dedicated an entire chapter of her 2011 memoir to hair care. And for BravoCon 2023, she was tapped by haircare brand Nexxus, further reinforcing her luscious locks as an emblem of her staying power.

With season 13 currently airing (new episodes are available every Wednesday on Hayu), Richards is in the hot seat in real-time, with the viral news of her reported marital separation breaking just before the season premiered. She’s not new to facing private struggles in front of the world, and in fact, seems to see the silver lining. “Any time that I’ve had to stand up for myself, when people have been coming at me and saying things that weren’t true; attacking me or my family…that’s when I’ve felt my strongest,” she reflects. “[When I’m] just staying true to myself.”

At dinner later that night, this special quality shines. Engaged and friendly, Kyle Richards doesn’t shy away from getting personal with a table of eager editors. She jokes about famous rifts with her sisters and her former friend Lisa Vanderpump. Sipping a fancy mocktail, she opens up about her decision to quit drinking (a radical route in the Bravoverse). She gushes over her love for working out and rejects the reductive rumours surrounding her weight loss.

Sharing such intimate details with a group of strangers would make most of us uncomfortable, but Kyle — sitting with her hair in a perfect blowout — appears impressively at ease.

After all, being a Housewife is a case study of unbridled vulnerability. It requires you to open yourself up to the world — broadcasting messy breakups and brutal betrayals — while abiding by the unspoken standard of looking perfectly pulled together. In this realm, professional-level styling is not just a frivolous perk of the gig, it’s a flat-out necessity. “For me, it’s like my armour,” Richards says of her supremely shiny hair. (And I believe her!) Partaking in public feuds — and looking good doing it — sounds like an incredibly stressful gig. As the only current RHOBH cast member who’s been there since season 1, Kyle Richards can attest to the impact this has on your hair.

“When I first started the show, [doing] my hair was easy. Then I started styling it more and more, and that takes a toll on your hair,” she says. “It’s not what it was when I started the show. So finding a product like Nexxus — that really goes to work and helps reverse damage and protect [my hair] — makes me feel better, and [my hair] looks a lot better.”

RHOBH star Kyle Richards at BravoCon 2023.
Photography by Getty Images

Unlike her RHOBH co-stars who revel in avant-garde styling — think Dorit Kemsley’s pretzel-esque updo or Erika Jayne’s Christmas tree braid — Kyle Richards prefers to keep her hair looking natural (that is, by Housewives standards). “I like to always look and feel like myself…I don’t fall victim to [thinking] ‘Oh, I should keep up with them and their hairstyles,’” she says of her wig-wearing, barrette-bearing castmates.

Back in season 1, she fondly recalls, the cameraman would come into her closet and help her pick her outfit ahead of each confessional interview. “Now, it’s like this big thing; it’s probably changed because of Dorit and Erika’s whole over-the-top [style],” she notes, waving arms out wide. “Now, they’ll send you emails: ‘What’s your look going to be when we shoot on Tuesday?’ Like, I don’t know…anything! What do you mean? It’s so annoying that I have to think of this now.” But as the costuming gets campier, Richards’s pin-straight styles, voluminous curls and polished up-dos only add to her level-headed appeal.

“There have been times where we pull [my hair] up more and tease it to do a big thing, and it’s fun done for the day,” she admits. “But I can’t wait to get that out of my hair… I just want it to feel nice and soft and healthy.” To achieve this, she washes it every other day and sticks to products that she loves, pointing to Nexxus’ Unbreakable Care collection. “When my hair feels good and looks good, I feel good.”

With healthy hair comes a glossy glow and dramatic volume, and Kyle Richards seems to understand this power in the world of RHOBH. “I’m a Leo rising, [and hair is] part of how you present yourself. So, I feel like maybe I look like a lion; strong.” When I ask her how she might describe her hair in a quippy Housewives tagline, her answer is apt. “This is the mane event,” she says. That type of confidence stands tall.

The turn of the season marks the perfect time to debut a new hairstyle. And who better to inspire your next hairdo than Hollywood’s hottest stars?

No matter what look you’re going for, your hairstyle can only turn out as good as the preparation that goes into it—and the products you’re using along the way. Whether you need a stronghold gel, a shine-inducing serum or a frizz-fighting hairspray, brands like Tresemmé, Nexxus, and Shea Moisture offer everything you’ll need to help recreate the trendiest celebrity hair looks this season.

To help you achieve Hollywood-level hair, we’ve tapped celebrity hairstylist Kirsten Klontz, whose star-studded clientele includes famous faces like Lily-Rose Depp and Canada’s Drag Race icon Brooke Lynn Hytes. From Sofia Richie’s signature slicked-back bun to Ashley Graham’s Pamela Anderson-inspired updo, Klontz breaks down six celebrity-approved fall and winter hairstyles and how to recreate them at home.

Sofia Richie’s Slicked-Back Bun

@fashionmagazine

From Sofia Richie’s signature slicked-back bun to Ashley Graham’s Pamela Anderson–inspired updo, we tapped expert stylist Kirsten Klontz to break down 6 celebrity-approved fall and winter hairstyles and how to recreate them at home using Unilever’s iconic hair products.

♬ original sound – FASHION

Sofia Richie’s signature slicked-back bun has been one of the most sought-after looks of the year, and it’s showing no signs of going out of style. To recreate Richie’s look, prep the hair for styling with Nexxus’ Keraphix Shampoo, Conditioner and Treatment Mask. This product line, formulated with reparative black rice, will help heal and protect your hair from damage caused by frequent slicked-back styling. Post-shower, blow dry your hair from the roots to the ends to help smooth the cuticle. Next, decide between a middle or side part and gather the hair back into a low, tight ponytail using a soft bristle brush. Klontz’s pro tip for an extra chic look? Split the ponytail into two pieces and form a rope braid by taking the two strands and twisting them in the same direction around each other. As you work down the braid, saturate the hair with a generous amount of the Tressemé Ultra Define Gel and Tresemmé’s Extra Hold Hair Spray, and tie off the end with a small elastic.

“Because it’s got that humidity resistance built into it, this hair spray helps with flyaways, and it dries really quick,” explains Klontz. Since the product is also waterproof, it’ll work on curls without having the hair revert to a curly state. Lastly, you’ll twist your rope braid around the base of the ponytail until you’ve created a bun. Pin with bobby pins to secure, and your slicked-back bun is complete!

Megan Thee Stallion’s Voluminous Natural Texture

To achieve Megan Thee Stallion’s full-of-body afro, start with clean hair that has been treated with a curl enhancer like Nexxus’ Curl Define Leave-in Conditioner. Then, section the hair and follow up with either a curl-enhancing cream or a curl-defining gel. “I lean towards the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie because it has more of a cream base, which I find is easier to brush out when you want that really big look,” says Klontz.

Once the product has been evenly distributed, finger-coil each strand to help define the curls further and let them air dry—or diffuse them if you’re pressed for time. After drying, take a wide-tooth comb and begin brushing the hair. For the most voluminous result, you’ll want to brush the curls out entirely.

“I think for the holidays and parties coming up, I would definitely say to go big with it and be fearless,” says Klontz. “The beauty of curls is that you can get those kinds of beautiful shapes and textures out of the hair.”

Simone Ashley’s Rapunzel ‘S’ Waves

A post shared by Simone Ashley (@simoneashley)

The secret to Simone Ashley’s Rapunzel ‘S’ waves lies in the technique. Fresh out of the shower, apply a liberal amount of Tresemmé’s One Step 5-in-1 Wave Spray to enhance your hair’s natural waves and protect against heat. Then, from the middle to the ends of the hair, apply the Tresemmé Keratin Smooth Shine Serum before further activating your waves and curls by scrunching towards the scalp.

Once your hair has dried, start sculpting that ‘S’ shape by tapping through the hair with a flat iron. “What you’re going to do is open and close your flat iron on the hair,” explains Klontz. As you move down each section of hair while continuing to clamp the flat iron, you’ll be able to manipulate that ‘S’ shape—instead of doing a complete pass to “straighten” the hair. “My pro tip is that when you’re using the flat iron, you want to mimic the size of your natural waves,” she shares.

This season, short hair is chic—and a blunt, jaw-length bob like Hailey Bieber’s is one of the best ways to wear it. “I always say that a bob is your best accessory,” Klontz tells us.

To ensure a frizz-free style, wash your hair before styling with the Tresemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner duo. “What their technology does is it helps to smooth the hair for up to 72 hours—which is a bonus, especially if you’re like me and you like getting multiple days out of your look,” she explains. Then, focusing on the ends of your damp hair, apply the Tresemmé Keratin Smooth Shine Serum to boost softness and shine. Use a paddle brush and blow dryer with a concentrated nozzle to smooth out the hair, and finish up with a flat iron if necessary for your hair type and seal it all in with a spritz of Tresemmé’s Extra Hold Hair Spray.

Shay Mitchell’s ‘Wet’ Look

A post shared by Shay Mitchell (@shaymitchell)

Shay Mitchell’s “wet” look is a full-on mermaid-core moment. And much to our delight, Klontz tells us it’s a lot easier to achieve than it looks. Starting on wet hair, apply the Tresemmé Ultra Define Gel on the top half of the hair, and then work in the Tresemmé 5-in-1 Sleek Cream from the middle of the hair downwards.

“Once you’ve got the gel on there, you’re going to want to use a long, medium-tooth comb with lots of teeth, and then you’ll give yourself a part,” explains Klontz. “Then, because the gel has so much hold, you can kind of use your hands and the comb to shape the front of it how you want.” When you’ve achieved your desired shape, add flat clips to the hair to hold the style in place as you “blow dry” using a diffuser. To maintain that definition, avoid touching the hair or raking your fingers through it. Once fully dry, remove the clips and your style will be all set.

Ashley Graham’s Pamela Anderson Updo

A post shared by justine marjan (@justinemarjan)

Is there any style more suited for a festive soirée than a deliberately tousled updo? Ashley Graham’s Pamela Anderson-esque hairstyle will, without a doubt, be pinned to our mood board for the party season.

Recreate Graham’s look by reaching for Tresemmé’s 5-in-1 Wave Spray and spritzing it onto the hair section by section to enhance your hair’s natural texture. To create volume, flip your hair upside down and diffuse to dry. As you begin building the updo, leave out a few face-framing pieces around the hairline to mimic Graham’s look. Klontz, who has styled Graham’s hair herself, says her secret to achieving this messy updo is splitting the hair down the middle and pulling it into two high ponytails right on top of the head about an inch apart.

“Grab one-inch sections of your hair and loop it around your finger, leaving the ends out. Then, you can start pinning it in place,” says Klontz. “I start in the middle so that you don’t see the gap between the two ponytails.” Continue to create these loops all over the head until you’re satisfied, and remember that they don’t have to be perfect. The “messiness” is all part of this look’s appeal. Lastly, lock it in with a final spritz of Tresemmé’s Extra Hold Hair Spray so you can party all night long.

We never thought we’d be saying this, but here we are. After days of rumours circulating on social media and anxious fans pleading for the news not to be true, photos obtained by TMZ on November 9 confirmed many fans’ worst fear — Harry Styles has, in fact, shaved his head.

We know, we’re shocked too. If you’ve been going through the seven stages of grief due to the sudden loss of Styles’ locks, you’re not alone. Styles stans are, for the most part, not OK.

Styles was spotted sporting a fresh buzzcut while attending a U2 concert at the Las Vegas Sphere with rumoured girlfriend, Canadian actress Taylor Russell. And, although the concert was one of Styles and Russell’s most public outings to date, the singer’s new nearly bald head overshadowed his new romance.

As a celebrity whose hair has been synonymous with his superstar image over the years, it’s no surprise that fans had a strong reaction to his new haircut. And they had some pretty unique ways of expressing their *passionate* feelings about the new look.

Some used humour to cope with their shock, like one fan who captioned images of his new look with cheeky lines like “harry styles but no hair to style.”

Others weren’t handling it as well, with some expressing feelings of complete and utter despair at the sudden loss of Styles’ beloved curls.

Fans have also noticed how ironic it is that Styles chopped off his famous locks right after Taylor Swift came out with a new song from her recently released album 1989 (Taylor’s Version) that mentions one of his most memorable hairstyles. Titled “Now That We Don’t Talk,” the new tune contains lyrics that seem to be directed at how Styles grew his hair long after the pair broke up in 2013. 10 years later, it’s a funny coincidence that Styles’ hair is now the shortest it’s ever been — by far.

Despite seeing the paparazzi-style photos of his new hairstyle, one fan decided that she needed confirmation from a very trusted source — Styles’ mom, Anne. After coincidently running into her over the weekend, the fan asked Anne if she could confirm that the new look was real. Her response? She allegedly stated that “[Harry’s] on holiday and he fancied a change.” There you have it folks, confirmation straight from Harry’s mum herself!

Amid all the wild, eccentric, sequin-filled and boa-adorned outfits that Styles has sported in recent years, his famous brunette curls have remained relatively unchanged. The power of this hairstyle also extends far beyond Styles’ solo career; fans who’ve watched the singer grow up before their eyes for the past 13 years have only known him with long-ish, sometimes shaggy, brown waves.

Looking back on his early X Factor and One Direction days, Styles’ curly chestnut locks were what made him distinguishable from his bandmates. As the years went on, the singer’s hair remained one of the focal points of his image, whether it was on the shorter side or if it was grown out into his infamous Tarzan-esque mop of the mid-2010s.

As he embarked on his solo career, Styles debuted a much shorter hairdo, but the curls were still on full display. Even as he’s transformed his look over the last few years, his iconic tousled hairstyle has mostly stayed the same — except for the close-cropped looks he sported in the films Don’t Worry Darling and The Policeman.

Still, no style has ever been as drastic of a change as the shaved-head look that he’s sporting now.

Nevertheless, Harry’s mother’s explanation of her son switching up his hairstyle because he wanted a change while he takes a break from the spotlight makes total sense. Up until July 2023, the “As It Was” singer was on tour for almost two years straight, while simultaneously filming movies, developing his beauty brand, Pleasing, and putting out a new album. Since wrapping up his final stop on the worldwide Love On Tour last summer, the singer has been taking some time off and has rarely been spotted in public.

During the few instances where fans have caught a glimpse of Styles this fall, he’s often been seen with Russell, the Bones and All star who has sported her own fair share of unique hairstyles. Although neither Styles nor Russell has yet to confirm their relationship, the two have been spotted holding hands in London, Barcelona and Russell’s hometown of Vancouver.

While we wait to see what’s next for the singer, we’ll be trying to console ourselves with the hope that this won’t be our final farewell to Styles’ infamous curly locks. Because, after all, hair grows back… right?

“When I created the Rare Impact Fund [in 2020], I knew it was something I had to give my full heart to,” says Selena Gomez over a video call. She’s calling to chat about the launch of the Make a Rare Impact campaign, which officially launches today. The campaign is a partnership between Gomez’s Rare Beauty and Sephora, wherein Sephora will donate 100 per cent of Rare Beauty product sales on October 10, World Mental Health Day, to the Rare Impact Fund. “I always wanted to be a woman of my word.”

The Rare Impact Fund’s mission is to reduce the stigma associated with mental health and increase access to mental health services and education for young people globally. “The mental health crisis is one of the most serious issues facing young people today,” says Gomez. “This work would not be possible without the support of partners, like Sephora, who not only believe in this mission, but donate crucial funds to expand mental health resources to young people around the world.” 100 per cent of proceeds of Rare Beauty products sold at Sephora locations in 28 countries around the world, including Canada, Australia, the U.S. and the U.K.

Rare Beauty is so much bigger than a makeup brand,” says Gomez. Aside from changing the lives of young people around the world with the Rare Impact Fund (which the brand donates one per cent of product sales to, all year-round), Gomez says launching Rare Beauty three years ago has improved her own relationship with beauty, too. “My relationship with beauty is constantly evolving,” explains Gomez. “I’ve been learning to not put how I’m feeling physically first. Because there are days when I wake up and don’t feel the prettiest. It’s a daily struggle but I try to [remember that] what makes me happy and what makes me beautiful is being who I am.”

Gomez has long been open about her own mental health struggles and she says founding Rare Beauty and watching its impact grow has been integral to her own growth and healing. “Hearing other people’s stories [through Rare Beauty and the Rare Impact Fund] has helped me heal in my own life. It’s been pretty life-changing.” Though, she’s quick to point out, “there was never an ulterior motive. I really just wanted people to feel seen.”

If you’ve ever browsed the Rare Beauty section at Sephora (online or IRL), you’ve probably noticed the brand’s uplifting product names. An under-eye brightener called Positive Light. A bronzer stick called Warm Wishes. A lip liner named Kind Words. These little details add up to make a big impact on the way Rare Beauty exists within an industry that hasn’t always had the warmest, most inviting, inclusive reputation. As it turns out, that’s exactly why Gomez says these names are so important.

“I have a 10-year-old sister and I get to overhear her saying ‘What about [the shade] Inspire or Hope?’ when her and her friends are playing with the makeup.” For those of us who grew up in a different era of the beauty industry, like Gomez herself, the positivity is a welcome change, indeed.

“I have a responsibility as an older sister to be the best [role model for her] that I can be.”

Beyoncé’s glam is always on point, and the Renaissance Tour beauty looks she’s serving during each performance are no exception. While her out-of-this-world outfits continue to generate major buzz throughout the tour, the hair and makeup has absolutely been the cherry on top.

Thanks to the work of hairstylist Neal Farinah and makeup artist Rokael Lizama, we’ve been blessed with some of the most fantastic hair and makeup looks Bey has rocked to date. From a masterclass in bouncy hair to endless iterations of glittering shadow, it’s been an all-out beauty buffet.

Scroll on to see some of the most iconic Renaissance tour beauty looks from the current North American leg.

Toronto, Ontario

To kick things off in North America, Beyoncé wowed Toronto concert-goers with a head-to-toe sparkly look and loose mermaid waves. A wash of silver glitter on the lids matched her crystal-encrusted Fendi dress, and the sharp wing and full, fluffy lashes kept all the focus on her eyes. Makeup artist Rokael Lizama used her brand, Rokael Beauty’s individual lashes in Lunar Lites and Aurora Lites along with wing cluster lashes to create the fanned-out effect.

Chicago, Illinois

Keeping with the theme of glittering shadows, Bey’s Chicago look blended mermaidcore with space cowboy chic for one of the tour’s most attention-grabbing glam moments. The star wore a Tiffany-blue iridescent shadow on her lids and the rest of the makeup was pared-back and pretty (think hydrated skin and a touch of gloss on the lips).

We would be remiss not to mention Bey’s excellent crimped hair in Chicago, which captured the ‘70s disco vibes of the night. We never thought we’d be adding a crimping iron to our beauty wishlist in 2023, and yet here we are.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Nothing says glamour quite like a smokey eye, and Beyoncé showed us how it’s done in Philly. For the first U.S. show of the tour, the singer stunned silvery smoked-out shadow and lashes for days. Voluminous hair, matte skin and a neutral mauve lip maintained the look’s timeless appeal.

Nashville, Tennessee

A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce)

We’ve been waiting for a lip-focused look, and Queen Bey did not disappoint in Tennessee. The shiny, fire engine red lip was a stroke of monochromatic genius, and the sparkly gold lids were a perfect complement to her honey blonde locks. We stan a colour-coordinated queen.

New York City

Smooth, glossy waves had a serious moment during Bey’s NYC performance. Paired with rosy cheeks, neutral shadow and a knockout Marc Jacobs dress, the look embodied classic Hollywood starlet in all the right ways.

Detroit, Michigan

A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce)

Category is: dripping in gold in Detroit. For this gilded look, Lizama dusted Bey’s lids with plenty of shimmering gold shadow, and her skin was dewy, bronzed and generally fabulous. Combined with the already iconic sparkling hooded gown, it’s a tour look for the books. Speaking of: when are we getting a tour lookbook?

East Rutherford, New Jersey

A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce)

Bey was pretty in peach in East Rutherford, NJ, wearing the barely-there shade on her eyes, lips and cheeks. Darker shadow on the outer corners of the lids gave the look dimension, while her voluminous blowout tied everything together for an effortless effect.

Boston, Massachusetts

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Neal Farinah (@nealfarinah)

Beyoncé’s Massachusetts look consisted of big, shiny blonde hair, bold red lips and seriously over-the-top accessories, and we’re certainly not mad about it. The star rocked a glittering bronze shadow on her lids behind her incredible cat-eye sunnies, adding an extra layer of drama to the full look. This Renaissance tour beauty look screamed Old Hollywood glamour, with a camp twist.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Neal Farinah (@nealfarinah)

Don’t get us wrong, we’re head-over-heels for Bey’s luscious waves, but there’s something so captivating about the ultra-long, poker straight hair the singer rocked in Minneapolis. We can’t get over the sleek and shiny look, which she also sported in NYC and New Jersey. More hair flips, please.

A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce)

This Y2K-esque look was everything we adore when it comes to concert glamour: metallic, sparkly and over-the-top. Bey’s lips and cheeks were flushed with a touch of pink, and a razor sharp wing gave the eyes just the right amount of edge. It’s giving Renaissance Barbie, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Charlotte, North Carolina

A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce)

When the “Heated” singer told us in the lyrics of the song that her “face card never declines,” she meant every single word. Showing a little Southern love for Charlotte, Bey dazzled beneath stage lights with a gold-to-purple glitter lid look complete with a thin swipe of black winged liner and a pink pout.

Atlanta, Georgia

A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce)

To match the ethereal energy of Beyoncé’s lemon-lime hooded couture gown designed by Gaurav Gupta, MUA Lizama seized the opportunity to play with colour for the pop star’s Atlanta glam. Our eyes were instantly drawn to the lids, where glittery green eyeshadow met hints of gold. Again, Lunar Lites and Aurora Lites falsies pulled the whole look together with a bold, wispy flair.

Phoenix, Arizona

A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce)

We’ve got two words to sum up Bey’s Phoenix look: Body. Glitter. As she should, this Virgo kicked off her prime astrological season doused in golden body glitter that glistened with her every move. Lizama took a glowy, soft glam approach to the singer’s face and eye makeup, while hairstylist Farinah straightened her honey blonde strands to create that signature, sleek look once again.

Las Vegas, Nevada

They say that what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas — but we’re more than grateful that this show-stopping look made it to the Gram. Miss Carter pulled out all the stops for Sin City, where she wore a regal red number by Atelier Zuhra with a cape that doubled as the ultimate hair accessory, and jewel-toned makeup to match. They don’t call her Queen Bey for nothing.

This article was originally published on March 28, 2023 and has been updated.

As Hailey Bieber’s face pops onto my screen at the beginning of our Zoom call, I find myself going through a mental checklist of the details that make up her signature beauty look. Bare eyes? Check. Glowing skin? Check. Brown bob slicked down into a middle part? Check. Almond-shaped nails and ultra-glossy lips? Check and check. She has nailed the “model off duty” look. The 26-year-old model-turned-brand founder (and former FASHION cover star) is nine months into the launch of her brand Rhode Skin, her first foray into skincare. With a waitlist of over one million across its products (of which there are only a handful), it’s safe to say that the brand has, by all accounts, been a smashing success. Today, Rhode begins shipping to Canada, its first expansion outside of the U.S. market.

RELATED: Hailey Bieber Says It’s Time to Make the Hair Change You’ve Been Considering

Proving that her commitment to minimalism is more than just an aesthetic choice, Bieber launched Rhode with only three products (five, if you count all three flavours of the Peptide Lip Treatment: Salted Caramel, Watermelon Slice and Unscented). “The beauty industry is very crowded,” says Bieber. “There are so many amazing brands [out there]. I wanted Rhode to be a brand that could put out that one really good moisturizer or that one really good lip treatment. We’re also conscious of not putting excess into the environment. These are things that are topics of conversation every single time we meet about a new product.”

Plus, through her years in the modelling industry, Bieber has learned the hard way that less is definitely more when it comes to skincare. “When your skin barrier is healthy and happy, your skin is healthy. But so many things can disturb your barrier, like travelling, the environment, and using harsh products. When I was a teenager, if I was having any sort of breakout, I thought throwing salicylic acid on it would fix it. You just want to get rid of it so you try to burn it off.” (Teen celebrities: they’re just like us.) “That’s why Rhode is so focused on hydration and a [healthy] barrier,” says Bieber.

Photography by Stevie Dance

Rhode Skin launched with a Peptide Glazing Fluid ($44), an instantly plumping and hydrating gel serum, Barrier Restore Cream ($44), a barrier-supporting cream moisturizer, and three Lip Peptide Treatments ($24 each). The entire lineup can also be purchased via The Rhode Kit ($142). “The idea behind the launch was, ‘What are the three things I couldn’t survive a flight without?” Bieber explains. “Or if I was stranded on a desert island and could only have three things with me, what would they be? That was the mentality for me.”

The clean, ultra-minimal look that Hailey Bieber has become known for is Rhode’s aesthetic as well, right down to the brand’s muted grey and white packaging. “My technical title at the brand is founder and creative director,” says Bieber. “Coming from the fashion industry, I’m obsessed with imagery, so things like [packaging and branding] took a lot of time because I’m so specific about the little details.”

So what’s Rhode’s secret to standing out in the ever-so-saturated beauty industry? “I feel like I’m in sync with my audience,” says Bieber. “Most of the products that are being developed or are in the pipeline for the next couple years are what people are asking for [right now]. So I’m like, ‘We must be in a good place.’ It makes me really happy because that’s such a big part of creating a brand for people who look to you for your style, or your skincare routine, or your aesthetic.”

A post shared by rhode skin (@rhode)

So what’s next for the ultra-minimalist brand? Growth and expansion, of course — into new markets (Rhode launched in the United Kingdom this past spring) and new categories. The brand’s latest launch is Glazing Milk ($44), a silky ceramide-rich facial essence that boosts barrier function and leaves skin hydrated and glowy. But don’t expect a sudden explosion of product offerings from Rhode. “I think a 10-step routine is unnecessary,” says Bieber. “But that’s just me.”

Below, Hailey Bieber shares her tried-and-true beauty essentials.

“I’ve been working since I was eight years old. I’ve just pushed through life,” says Sarah Jessica Parker over the phone. “I’ve had wonderful experiences and I’ve had hard experiences. And I didn’t want to focus on the things that were painful. I gave them the time they needed, but for me, being sad — or disappointed or frustrated or angry or bitter — just didn’t seem to move me forward.”

The And Just Like That… actor has partnered with RoC Skincare for the second year in a row on the #LookForwardProject in collaboration with non-profit organization SeekHer, which aims to bridge the gender gap of mental health in the U.S. through advocacy and research. The project’s mission is to support a more optimistic future via access to mental health advocacy and resources for teens and their parents. She’s also curated a limited edition skincare kit with the science-backed brand, with profits going to SeekHer.

The brand has shared some data about the role of optimism, especially as it impacts teens and their caregivers, finding that 69 per cent of moms are concerned their negativity about the future could impact their child’s outlook and 97 per cent of moms believe there should be more resources and support to ensure our children learn how to incorporate optimism into their lives. During our call, I realize that natural optimist Parker is the perfect person for the role.

“I think I’ve developed, through experience, a desire to carry on and move forward,” she says. “I try not to get too trapped in things that are painful. It’s not productive.” As for how her outlook impacts her parenting (Parker has three kids; son James, 20, and twin daughters Tabitha and Marion, 13), she says, “I want them to feel good about the things that are interesting to them. And I want them to feel excited about the future, even though the world is incredibly complicated and they will eventually be exposed to social media and all the landmines that exist there. I want them to find comfort in individuality.”

Parker says she has chosen to work with RoC Skincare again because the brand’s messaging “is about taking the focus off looks, and the idea of ‘aging.’ The focus is living and the optimism that can come with experience, time and perspective. What RoC really wants is for women to feel good when they leave their homes and feel like they’re like themselves, not like their neighbour, not like the other mothers at school drop-off, not like the other teachers. Like themselves.” As for her own perspective on aging, she says, “I really don’t think about it. And I don’t think that makes me evolved. I just don’t think it’s registered in a way that’s been dominant. I haven’t worked hard to not think about it. I just don’t think about it.”

I ask Parker if she partakes in any practices that help fuel her optimism, such as meditation or journaling. “Nope, nope, nope. None of that,” she laughs. “And I don’t do self-care days. I just pick myself up and get back to work. That’s the way I’ve always lived my life.”

L’Oréal Paris spent the past few days teasing the arrival of a new face on the brand’s Instagram, so there’s only been one question on the minds of beauty enthusiasts worldwide this week: who is she?

You’ve seen her on the runway. You’ve seen her on billboards. You’ve seen her on TV. And beginning this fall, you’ll be seeing her front and centre in L’Oréal Paris makeup campaigns. She’s Kendall Jenner, and she’s just been unveiled as the beauty brand’s newest global ambassador!

In retrospect, our first hint that L’Oréal Paris’ new it girl could be the fifth member of the Kar-Jenner clan was practically hiding in plain sight. It was only a couple of months ago when Jenner’s makeup artist Mary Phillips revealed on Instagram that the model wore an exclusively L’Oréal Paris makeup look to this year’s Karl Lagerfeld-themed Met Gala, after all.

As one of the biggest names in the modelling industry and one of the most famous faces of our generation (she’s only got a cool 350 million followers across her social media accounts), nothing less than a partnership with one of beauty’s biggest brands is to be expected. Where makeup is concerned, we’re used to seeing little sister Kylie Jenner — who solidified her position as a mega beauty mogul with the launch of Kylie Cosmetics in 2015 — or big sis Kim Kardashian — whose revamped KKW beauty line is due to make a comeback later this year — in the spotlight. Yet, here comes Kendall ushering in a new era of L’Oréal Paris.

“At any other time, Kendall Jenner might have been as successful as she is now, but her worth and her choices and her image might have been defined or even controlled by others. But nobody defines Kendall Jenner. She is the embodiment of everything Gen-Z stands for, owning her image, proudly growing in her self-worth, and inspiring others to do the same,” shares Delphine Viguier-Hovasse, L’Oréal Paris global president in a press release.

As a multi-hyphenate model and entrepreneur, Jenner has spent recent years developing an image outside of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, the television show that first introduced Jenner to the world at age 11. “Being in charge of my image is such a blessing. I have had so much fun, especially in the last two years since launching a brand of my own,” says Jenner in a statement announcing the collab. “I feel I am coming into my own womanhood more and more. I get my confidence in knowing my worth. And working hard for what I deserve.” With their synchronized embodiment of sisterhood, women’s empowerment and the brand’s self-worth ethos, this alignment feels like a seamless fit.

From high-fashion campaign imagery to laidback vacation snaps, Jenner’s Instagram is bursting with It girl energy, and one thing we can glean from the glam shots she shares is that she takes a minimal approach when it comes to beauty. Chiselled cheeks, a nude pout, and a sultry eye are always built up over a fresh-faced base that reads like second skin. It’s no wonder then, that her current favourite L’Oréal Paris product provides that skin-like finish she seems to love.

“I have to say I love L’Oréal Paris makeup, especially the foundations. I think my favourite is Infallible Freshwear,” she shares. “It’s great to find makeup you can put on, that fits your skin, and that you don’t have to worry about — you can just face your day because you know it’s going to resist everything.”

Though Jenner may take a less-is-more approach to beauty, we’re sure that years of work in the modelling industry behind the scenes of runway shows and high-fashion campaigns are bound to have taught this model a lesson or two about makeup, straight from the very best sources in the business of beauty. Jenner’s catwalk career began at the age of 13, and now, at the age of 27, she is recognized as a modern “super” in the modelling world. Having walked in high fashion shows from Versace to Prada, this runway regular earned herself the title of 2018’s highest-paid model of the year at the age of 23 — a title she still maintained just last year. With countless moments in the makeup chair at the hands of makeup legends, what could’ve been better preparation for a role like this?

Jenner joins other beauty icons like Viola Davis, Andie Macdowell, Jane Fonda, Elle Fanning and Kate Winslet as the newest member of the L’Oréal Paris Global Ambassador sisterhood, where we’re sure she’ll thrive under this appointment. We’ll get our first look at Jenner in action in this new role this September, when she’s set to front a new makeup campaign.

Since the release of her debut single in 2014, singer-songwriter Kelsea Ballerini has earned herself several musical accolades, such as Country Music Awards, Grammy nominations and multiple #1 singles. But in a phone interview with FASHION, the singer revealed that one of her biggest dreams just came true last year, when she signed on to be the newest face of CoverGirl.

At the age of 14, Ballerini wrote in a journal that she dreamed of becoming a CoverGirl. Now, one year into her role as the face of the brand, Ballerini is living proof that manifestation is real. Though she’s a frequent (and hilarious) TikTok user, the country-pop star says she hasn’t yet come across #manifestationtok — the side of TikTok flooded with manifestation mantras and affirmations — but truth be told, she doesn’t seem to need it.

Photography Courtesy of CoverGirl

This CoverGirl has always been firm in her belief that she’d be a makeup artist if she weren’t a musician, and now she’s doing it all. From living her makeup artist fantasy as her own makeup artist on tour to becoming a CoverGirl and country music icon, Ballerini is as intuitive as she is talented.

Before signing off to go get glammed up (or to go “Hannah Montana” as she calls it) for her next performance, Ballerini caught up with FASHION to chat all things makeup and manifestation.

You’ve said in the past that you’d be a makeup artist if you weren’t a singer. Why is that?

“I just always found it to be a creative outlet, even when I was super young and before I was technically allowed to wear it outside of the house. My mom would let me play in her makeup bag and it was always a form of expressing myself. And then when I got older, before prom, dances, homecoming games and stuff like that, I’d do my friends’ makeup and it just became one of my love languages, really.”

What is your “desert island” makeup product that you can’t live without?

“Mascara! It always makes me look awake. It’s like coffee for your eyeballs, you know? For the longest time I would experiment with different mascaras and I did eyelash extensions but then I was like, this is not great for my lashes. I want to find something that really works. I grew up with CoverGirl mascara. As I got older and learned how to do my own makeup (I do it on tour now and everything), it’s just become my staple, especially Cleantopia [mascara].”

We’ve heard you manifested becoming a CoverGirl by writing about it in a journal as a teenager. Have you manifested anything else in your life?

“Before I really knew what the term manifesting was, I’ve just always believed in being really intentional about your dreams, what you want to align with, and just working towards it. Obviously, that takes work but it also takes actively calling to you and for you. Since I was a little kid, I’ve always wanted to be a country singer. I’ve always wanted to be a CoverGirl. I’ve always wanted to drive a Jeep. I’ve always wanted to have a dog. Things like that I’ve always just put out there and worked towards.”

You only used CoverGirl products at the 2023 Grammy Awards. Why is it important for you to show young fans that great makeup products can be accessible and affordable?

“I like being able to show that CoverGirl makeup can go from being out and about, having a day of running errands, to being onstage. It can live throughout any part of your life.”

What was it like working with the legendary Dolly Parton?

“We rehearsed in Nashville before we went to Vegas for the show, and it was 9AM on the dot — she walked in wearing full Dolly Parton glam, band ready, greeted everyone by name and led the charge for that rehearsal. [It was amazing] watching the amount of respect she commanded from her team and how comfortable she was. She was Dolly from the second she walked in the door. She’s someone who could be late and could be whatever she wanted to be, but still is just everything you’d want her to be. Lovely, kind, smart, thoughtful, mindful.”

Speaking of early mornings: are you a morning or nighttime routine person?

“I am a gremlin in the mornings! Like genuinely until I have coffee and wash my face, I don’t classify myself as a person. It’s coffee first and then a very cold face wash. That will slowly help me come to life. So I don’t think I really enjoy [the routine] until it’s post-show, end of the day, taking off the glitter, foundation, and everything then really taking care of my skin. So the next day when I put it back on, I don’t have to cover anything up. It’s just time to play.”

“In my 20s, if I had $40 in my bank account but I was out of shampoo and conditioner, I would overdraft the shit out of my bank account,” says Jonathan Van Ness over a Zoom call. “Instead of getting food, I would get hair products.” Sound familiar? The hairstylist, Queer Eye star and founder of JVN Hair, sounds like an IRL Carrie Bradshaw, who famously said in Sex and the City‘s fourth season: “When I first moved to New York I was totally broke. Sometimes I would buy Vogue instead of dinner. I just felt it fed me more.”

RELATED: Did Sofia Richie Grainge Just Bring Back the Side Part?

During our call, the grooming guru and fan favourite from Netflix’s Queer Eye illuminates my screen with their megawatt smile, abundance of curls, a pop of green eyeshadow, and a bubbly nature that radiates all the way from across the pond — and my laptop screen. Since FASHION last spoke with Van Ness, they’ve embarked on a new leg of his comedy tour, Queer Eye has returned for its seventh season, and JVN Hair has launched a Pride haircare set in collaboration with GLSEN. (Van Ness is non-binary and uses the pronouns “they,” “he,” and “she” interchangeably. We’re using “they” in this article.)

Needless to say, there was a lot to catch up on. Ahead, Van Ness spills it all.

On finding self-confidence through hair and hairstyling

“I’ve been behind the chair since I was 18. I’ve seen the transformation in clients when they make a change. I see that in the most reason season of Queer Eye, too. It’s like, wanting to change your hair in some way, asking for help, having the courage to try something new, saving your money to do it—there’s a lot of risk. I think when we take risks and it works out for us, that is a confidence-building exercise.”

On the genderless approach to creating JVN products

“I always felt really ostracized from beauty growing up because I was assigned male at birth and so I always had the idea that beauty, or expressing your beauty, was more of a female thing and not really for males. Also when it comes to my girlfriends, queer friends, non-binary friends, whether they’re really into beauty or not into it at all, they’re shamed either way. It’s like either you’re not femme enough or you’re too femme, or you’re too highly sexualized or not enough. There’s always this commentary on the way that you’re presenting yourself. I hate that. And I also hate the idea that men don’t feel comfortable enough to express their beauty or ask questions.”

A post shared by JVN Hair (@jvnhair)

“But when it comes to gender, men’s and women’s hair is pretty similar. Like, you put it under a microscope, you can’t tell if it’s a man’s hair or a woman’s hair. So I want people to not be afraid to express themselves and have the tools to achieve whatever look they want. That’s why I try to take gender out of haircare, because it’s already too much a part of everything else. I think that hair is for everyone.”

On balancing being a brand founder and not needing products to feel beautiful

“If you ever look at my Instagram stories you’ll see how I don’t mind being on camera with my hair not done, no makeup on. I feel really beautiful whether I’m fully camera-ready or not. I know that my beauty and my worth isn’t dependent upon how I look on the outside. That’s what I mean when I say, ‘You’re already beautiful and you’re already worth celebrating,’ whether or not you’re choosing to style your hair.”

A post shared by Jonathan Van Ness (@jvn)

“So if you are going to style your hair I want you to do it because you want to do it and because this is how you choose to express yourself. I think that’s where JVN hair comes in. I want to give you tools for you to express yourself.”

On what makes JVN Hair stand out

“I felt like there was an opportunity for me to make stuff that was inclusive of all hair types, works really well, and wasn’t like $500 by the time you got all the products you needed. And I know there are other products that are not as expensive as mine, but they don’t work as well. We really are proud of the price point that we were able to create and the variety of looks that you can achieve.”

“I do hope that transparency and positivity and inclusivity has helped the brand stand out, of course, but because I am kind of a snobby hairdresser in my heart, I hope it’s also because our formulas work really well. The way that we do everything is really about achieving your hair goal versus what your hair type is because, truthfully, so many things work on many hair types. I just want people to achieve their hair goals.”

On their current psoriasis scalp struggles

“I have a lot of dry flakes coming from my scalp which actually makes me feel insecure. It also is the itchiest on my scalp when I get psoriasis. My Pre Wash Scalp Oil really helps hydrate, gets the flakes out, and allows me to rub something soothing onto my head.”

Jonathan Van Ness hair oil

“Just because I’ve been more confident and understand how to style my hair better doesn’t mean that there are not times where I still don’t feel 100% about my hair.”

On embracing wearing their hair down

“All the men in my family lost their hair at some point between the ages of 18 and 30. I don’t know how much longer I’m going to have my hair, so as long as I have my hairline, and as long as this Propecia is working — Imma have this hair long!”

On how beauty helped them explore their sexuality

“I remember dating guys and hiding my heels in a closet. Like I had all my heels, my wigs, and all my hair stuff in a hidden part of the closet because I didn’t want someone who I was dating to see that I always loved to wear heels and I liked to style my hair and I had all these mannequins because I wanted to style their hair. Beauty really helped me ultimately realize that it was more important to be true to myself than to have the validation of potential people who I was attracted to. I think it also helped me realize that anyone who’s going to love me or want to be with me should do it because they’re into the fullness of who I am — not this one shell of who I think you want me to be.”

On the importance of role models and getting into politics

“I think possibility models are really important for us, to see people like us and recognize aspects of ourselves and other people that are older than us. It gives you a possibility model of something that you could achieve. I had Rudy Galindo when I was little. He was the 1996 US men’s figure skating champion, he won nationals, and he was openly gay and openly HIV-positive. He was fearless, open, expressive and incredible. I loved him. I still love him now.”

“At the same time, I wish that we held our politicians to the same standard that we hold our public figures to. As soon as I get my bag together, I’m going to run for office, honey. I really am.”

On the idea of hair holding memories

“That is totally accurate. I know for me, if I’m going through something or I go through a loss or significant trauma, I remember everything that was going on at that time. I remember how I would style my hair and what I was doing clothing-wise. Everything reminds you of those sorts of eras and everything can become a reminder. So I think hair can totally hold onto memories and having a physical change to your look totally resets your relationship with the world. You feel different, and your hair hits you different. When you change the physical sensations that you have, I just feel like it shakes things up. Sometimes it’s more exciting to feel those differences than it is to sit with your grief, pain or whatever.”

With her sophisticated style and ability to turn just about anything she does into the latest trend, there’s no doubt about Sofia Richie Grainge’s It girl status. And the American socialite has proven her influence yet again by wordlessly reviving a bygone (and somewhat controversial) hair trend — the side part.

RELATED: It’s the Summer of Sofia Richie Grainge

In a playful TikTok of Richie Grainge and her friend, comedian Jake Shane, lip-synching to Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice and Aqua’s new collaboration for the Barbie movie soundtrack, the newlywed casually debuted her hair styled with a deep side part that left viewers reeling.

@sofiarichiegraingebarbie world♬ original sound – Young Money

“No side parts are not back you guys don’t look like her,” wrote one commenter. “This is not a drill side parts are back in,” wrote another user. And perhaps no other response captured what thousands were thinking more than this one: “PS. On behalf of all millennials, thank you for giving the side part the justice it deserves. It’s been hard out here!”

But why is the return of this once-beloved hairstyle so divisive?

If you were on TikTok back in the summer of 2020, you’ll surely remember the playful feud that broke out between some Gen Zs and millennials when user @missladygleep said, “Prove me wrong, but I don’t think there is a single person who looks better with a side part than they do a middle part.”

Since then, debate over the once extremely popular hairstyle has continued on social media, but it wasn’t until Richie Grainge’s latest video that people seem to be reconsidering the look — and attempting to emulate it.

For many millennials, side parts (often featuring distinctly swoop-y bangs — think Rihanna in her Pon de Replay era) were a defining aspect of their style identity during their teen and early adult years in the late ’90s and early 2000s. This is directly opposed to many of Gen Z’ers preferred hairstyles, who typically opt for a middle-part these days, often slicked back into “clean girl” buns.

Side parts have their place in beauty history, too. Icons such as Marilyn Monroe and even Jessica Rabbit, for example, were known for their deep, dramatic side parts and pinned-up curls, which are still the standard of vintage glamour today.

According to Pew Research Centre’s definition of the generations, Richie Grainge herself is part of Gen Z, which is especially interesting when you consider how historically unpopular side parts are with the generation. But, as she paired the hairdo with a chic all black outfit and classic Chanel accessories, Richie Grainge proved yet again that her personal sense of style transcends modern trends, fads and even popular opinion.

The hairstyle seems to be a risk that’s already paid off, too. Despite the initial shock from some people, tons of the socialite’s followers are already embracing the new look and trying Richie Grainge’s new side part for themselves.

And, if this trend is anything like others that Richie Grainge has set, side parts may just be here to stay — whether we’re ready or not.

Disney’s new live-action adaptation of the beloved 1989 animated classic The Little Mermaid has been making major waves both on social media and at the box office. After its theatrical premiere on May 26, the film, which stars singer-songwriter and Beyoncé’s protégé Halle Bailey as Ariel, earned approximately $117.5 million at the box office in the days immediately following its release, making it the fifth most successful movie release over Memorial Day weekend in history.

RELATED: Halle Bailey, The Little Mermaid, and the Art of Method Dressing

From the movie’s refreshed score to its iconic fairytale storyline, it’s no wonder it’s been such a success so far. And one of the most stunning aspects of this adaptation is Bailey’s embodiment of the “little mermaid” herself. Playing such an adored Disney princess is no easy task and, according to many fans and film critics, Bailey rose to the occasion, capturing Ariel’s desire to be part of the human world with her compelling acting and breathtaking vocals.

Beyond her talents, Bailey captured the essence of Ariel because of the physical transformation she underwent to look like the mermaid. From costuming to hair and makeup, here’s everything we know about how Halle Bailey transformed into Ariel for the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid

Creating Halle Bailey’s mermaid glow

Just how did Bailey’s makeup capture that mermaid glow in the movie? Bailey’s makeup artist, Kat Ali, revealed some of the products and rituals used while filming on her Instagram.

For face makeup, Ali went with MAC’s Face and Body foundation and Uoma Beauty’s Stay Woke Concealer. She then used Milk Makeup’s Cream Blush Stick in Quickie and Dior Beauty’s Backstage Universal highlighter for an extra dose of leading-lady shine. Ali created Bailey’s mermaid pout by pairing MAC’s classic lip pencil in the muted, golden-nude shade Cork with Chanel Beauty’s Rouge Allure lipstick in the shade 174 Rouge Angèlique.

For eyes, Ali used Tom Ford eyeshadows to create the shimmery lid that Bailey wore for most of the film. For her perfectly-placed eyelashes, Ali and Bailey opted for eyelash extensions instead of falsies or mascara, which made the most sense for “under the sea” filming. But beauty really is pain sometimes, even for a Disney princess. Bailey revealed in a recent interview that the eyelash extensions would sometimes interfere with her work. Since they were on a strict filming schedule, Bailey would have no choice but to get her freshly-filled eyelashes wet before the 24-hour waiting period during which you’re supposed to keep a new set dry. As a result, she had to endure days where her eyes were burning in between takes — ouch!

A post shared by Kat Ali (@katalicreative)

And last but not least, we couldn’t take our eyes off the glittery mermaid scales that covered Bailey’s skin during her underwater scenes, but, according to Ali, those were actually all CGI-generated. That same scaly effect was also digitally edited onto Bailey’s cast mates, like Javier Bardem who played King Triton, to enhance the oceanic illusion. Ali shared that she did products such as Glossier’s Priming Mostiruizer and Kate Somerville Skincare’s Factor 50 Uncomplikated Makeup Setting Spray to keep Bailey’s skin glowy and healthy while they were filming in the hot summer heat.

Tailoring her mermaid tail

One of the most recognizable aspects of the animated Ariel’s look is her iconic sea green mermaid tale and the live-action adaptation paid tribute to the classic look with its own unique spin for Bailey’s version of Ariel.

Costume designer Colleen Atwood created a life-like mermaid tail that was perfectly fitted to Bailey in order to give the appearance that the aquatic appendage was simply an extension of her body. To do this, Atwood, who has won four Academy Awards for costume design during her decades-long career, constructed the tail using 3D screening and carefully placed layers of silk to create the illusion of iridescent, shimmering scales whenever Ariel swam around. This wasn’t the final product that we see in the movie, though, and Bailey didn’t actually wear the tail for any of the scenes that took place entirely underwater. Instead, Bailey wore a motion-capture suit while filming and the movie’s visual effects team later used CGI to digitally edit the tail onto her body. The post-production technology scanned the hand-made tail that Atwood and her team created and later added additional layers of dimension and colour to create a final, more “realistic,” mermaid tail that now appears in the movie. Whoa.

Ariel’s new hairdo

It’s no secret that CGI played a huge role in the making of the movie, and that extended into the animation of Bailey’s iconic red Ariel hairstyle. Director Rob Marshall revealed that most of the movie’s underwater scenes were filmed with Bailey wearing a large wig cap that was covered in technological “markers.” Later, with the help of blue screen technology in post-production, the flowing combination of dreadlocks and loose pieces of hair were digitally attached to Bailey’s scalp to create the illusion of them floating through the water.

During the land scenes, Bailey wore extensions and her natural hair, which is styled in long dreadlocks that reach past her waist, a choice that was surely by design. Bailey shared in a recent interview that she’s had her dreadlocks since she was five-years-old, saying her hairstyle is part of the “essence” of who she is. As such, keeping her natural hair as part of her version of Ariel was extremely important to her. The film’s creative team agreed and hair designer Camille Friend devised a plan to maintain the health of Bailey’s locs while also creating a modern version of the classic red hairstyle that Ariel is known for. To do so, Friend explained that only the roots of Bailey’s hair were dyed the ginger-red colour she sports in the film and each of her individual locs were wrapped in the same colour. To preserve the health of Bailey’s natural hair, and for continuity reasons while filming, Friend said that the hair-wrapping process took about 12 to 14 hours and that the film probably spent approximately $150,000 on Bailey’s hair in total.

The specific shade of her hair sparked some controversy on social media, with some moviegoers saying that the look should’ve been a brighter red more similar to the animated Ariel’s hair. While there were many options for how the live-action Ariel’s hair would look, Friend ultimately went with the more subdued ginger shade not only because it looked more realistic than a bright red, but also because it suited Bailey’s complexion better.

Regardless of peoples’ personal feelings, these aesthetic choices were made to honour the original animated Ariel while creating an modernized version of the princess for new Little Mermaid fans to admire and, more importantly, see themselves in — and if that doesn’t capture the true meaning of Disney magic, we don’t know what does.

Jane Fonda needs no introduction, but just for fun, here’s my attempt at one: The multi-talented icon is an Oscar-winning actress, activist, author, philanthropist, executive producer, L’Oréal Paris spokesperson, and my personal life coach. OK, the latter is not entirely true, but it certainly felt that way as we chatted on a video call.

“What I’ve learned over the years is that what really makes you look good is if you’re curious and happy,” says Fonda, who’s calling from the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. “If you’re interested and happy, that shows in your face.” She says that when she looks back at photos of her that were taken during not-so-happy times in her life, she can immediately see that reflected in the way she looked. “Often it would mean I was wearing too much makeup.” These days, Fonda is much more concerned with caring for her skin than she is with piling on makeup. It’s also why she’s the face of L’Oréal Paris’ Age Perfect Rosy Tone Skincare line. Fonda has been working with the brand for 15 years, something that she says continues to amaze her. “I’m still working for L’Oréal Paris, at my age. I have to pinch myself sometimes.”

A post shared by Jane Fonda (@janefonda)

Speaking of pinching (stay with me for a second), Fonda shares that she only began paying attention to her looks after starring alongside Katharine Hepburn in 1981’s On Golden Pond. “She made it very clear to me that she did not like the fact that I didn’t pay much attention to how I looked. She came up behind me one day and took my cheek between her fingers and said, ‘This is what you present to the world.’ She wanted me to be more self-aware about how I presented myself. And I think I’ve followed her advice and I do pay more attention now. It’s why I let my hair go grey, to match my face. Not because my face is grey,” she laughs. “But you know, I’m 85 now.”

Fonda’s advice for overall good health, good skin and good vibes? (My words, not hers.) Praying, exercising, meditating, and living intentionally. But what does that mean, I ask? “OK, here’s the metaphor. You’re in a canoe on a river and you have no oar or paddle, right?” (Right.) “So the tide takes you wherever it wants to take you and you have no control.” Fonda says living intentionally is putting your oar in the water and steering. “It took me quite a long time in my life to learn to put an oar in the water and steer myself. But I did learn to do it, and I think that’s why I feel pretty good now at my age.”

Before we wrap our call, I confess to my new life coach that I’m a hopeless meditator, having repeatedly tried and failed to pick up the good-for-you practice. “You need a good mantra,” says Fonda. I ask what hers is, in the hope that it’ll provide inspiration for my own. “Oh, once you have one, you can never share it,” she says. “You can’t repeat it to anyone.”

You learn something new (from Jane Fonda) every day.

“I’ve always loved a red carpet moment,” says Elle Fanning over a video call from Cannes. “Since I was little!” The 25-year-old actress, producer and L’Oréal Paris spokesperson has indeed been a fixture in Hollywood since she was a toddler. She kicked off her already two-decades-long acting career by playing the younger version of her sister Dakota’s characters in the miniseries Taken and the film I Am Sam, and at age four landed her first independent role, in the comedy film Daddy Day Care. So she knows a thing or two about a red carpet.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Elle Fanning (@ellefanning)

Today, she’s calling in from her fifth Cannes Film Festival, where she opened the annual two-week-long event in a stunning Alexander McQueen design by Sarah Burton. “It was kind of the ultimate Elle dress,” she says of the romantic custom look, which is inspired by a deconstructed orchid. “I went to my first Alexander McQueen show in March and I saw the bodice of this dress on the runway.” It was love at first sight. “Seeing it in person, I was like, ‘This is the best dress I’ve ever seen!’,” she laughs. “It was like wearing art. It was so me and Cannes is the only place to wear a dress like this. It’s such a big carpet, it needs a big dress. And sparkles never hurt.”

A culmination of Fanning’s signature romantic, ethereal style, which we’ve watched evolve and grow alongside the young actress for over two decades, the McQueen dress by Sarah Burton is indeed so very her—mature yet still whimsical and playful. “You never want to take fashion too seriously,” says Fanning. “Then it starts not being fun.” Fanning says that fashion has long been a happy, welcoming place for her, giving her space to play and experiment. “The fashion community has always been a place that’s accepted me,” she says. “When I was in high school, a bold fashion sense wasn’t as celebrated. I’d wear my wacky Rodarte pants or my vintage finds to school and they just weren’t accepted in the era of skinny jeans and t-shirts. I always felt at home in the fashion industry, because I could experiment and try new things.” Fanning credits style giants like Sofia Coppola and Marc Jacobs for taking her under their wing and helping to shape her ability to put a look together.

Photography by Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images

The actress brings that sense of play to her beauty looks, too, of course. “I’m in my eye makeup era,” says Fanning. “I’m getting creative and experimenting with my eyes.” I ask if this is a post-Euphoria effect. “Oh yeah, maybe! The rhinestones!” While Fanning uses makeup as a creative outlet, she also views getting un-ready at the end of a day as a moment of self-care. “It’s important to take time for yourself to decompress at the end of the night with your skincare. For me, hair wash day is a big deal because I have very curly hair [Editor’s note: say what?!], which people actually don’t know because I straighten it a lot,” she laughs. “But detangling it is a whole process. And I think loving yourself and being able to take time to look in the mirror and breathe is very important.”

As a young woman in Hollywood who’s been in the industry since she was really young, Fanning says she’s proud to work with L’Oréal Paris, who launched the Lights on Women initiative in 2021, a yearly award program for promising female short filmmakers. The winner of each year’s award will collect a grant, and receive support from the brand throughout the year at other festivals. “It’s so important to uplift young female artists and create space for them,” says Fanning, who has a production company with her sister, Dakota, called Lewellen Pictures. “I’ve been fortunate to have worked with a lot of female directors from a very young age,” she says. “So I will always continue to look for new female directors to work with.”

Photography via L’Oreal Paris

The same goes for the writers of the films and shows she works on. “As a woman, I want to feel like all of my complexities and layers are on screen,” says Fanning. “I think sometimes male writers will write a part where a woman walks into a room and she’s just strong and badass. And of course, there’s a time and place for that. But I’m like, ‘Where are her weaknesses? Where is she faltering and finding her strength?'”

Fanning is outspoken about the importance of increased diversity and representation in every facet of the industry, As one of the faces of L’Oréal Paris’ True Match Foundation, which is available in 45 shades and was recently reformulated with up to six pigments, allowing for its most precise shade-matching ever, the brand’s commitment to providing a wide range of makeup shades (and at accessible price points) is certainly not lost on Fanning. “It’s always so inspiring to be on set for True Match commercials and be with all of the girls,” she says. The most recent commercial stars Fanning alongside H.E.R, Kate Winslet and Nyma Tang. “It’s incredibly important that people feel like they are seen. The worst thing in the world is to feel like you’re not being listened to and not being seen. I’m happy that we can provide a little bit of that through beauty. Everyone deserves to feel beautiful.”

In his latest leading man role, Timothée Chalamet has been announced as the new face of the Bleu de Chanel fragrance for men — a partnership that’s a stylish fit for both the Oscar-nominated actor and the classic Parisian brand.

RELATED: Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet Just Destroyed Yet Another Red Carpet

Though he’s been known for sporting high-fashion looks for years now, this collaboration is Chalamet’s first partnership with a fashion house. Chanel picked the Dune star, who they call “one of the most alluring and audacious actors of his generation,” to be the face of the men’s fragrance partially due to his edgy persona and often daring style choices, according to an official release from the brand.

Not one to shy away from bold colours, unique silhouettes and unexpected textures, Chalamet has made a name for himself for his creative and gender-fluid red carpet style, frequently working with designers like Louis Vuitton and Haider Ackermann. Back in September of 2022 at the Venice Film Festival, the actor made headlines as onlookers were blown away by his show-stopping backless red jumpsuit, which was designed by the aforementioned Ackermann. You know what goes great with a fashion-forward gender-bending jumpsuit? A woody aromatic scent.

Without even trying, his off-duty style is just as cool. The star is often seen sporting his favourite Prada jacket and loves to layer with streetwear staples like windbreakers and sweaters (like the iconic Glossier hoodie Timmy wore back in 2019, and no, he wasn’t an ambassador, just a fan) when he’s out and about. Fans are so enamoured with his street style that there’s even an Instagram account called @readytimmywear, which has over 30K followers, that chronicles Chalamet’s looks both on and off the red carpet.

Chalamet’s meteoric rise to fame after starring in the 2017 coming-of-age film, Call Me By Your Name, has been nothing short of neck-breaking. Since his big break, Chalamet has starred in movies such as Lady Bird, Little Women and Beautiful Boy. Fans of the 27-year-old actor are also waiting on his next projects to hit the big screen, which includes the titular role in Wonka, the prequel to the 1964 Ronald Dahl novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the next instalment of the Dune series, Dune: Part Two. And how could die-hard Chalamet fans forget last year’s cannibal love story Bones and All, co-starring Canadian (and fellow fashion darling) Taylor Russell?

In a conversation with Chanel about his new beauty gig, Chalamet discussed how working with the brand felt like a “no-brainer” and explained, “As someone who is passionate about movie making and acting,” the significance of “collaborating with a fashion and beauty house that has a vast, substantive history with cinema.” That history continues with this campaign — a campaign film, directed by Martin Scorsese, be be released this coming fall.

Photography courtesy of Chanel

So, is Chalamet an everyday scent kind of guy, or someone who uses fragrance for special moments? It would seem it’s the latter, with the actor taking as thoughtful an approach to grooming as he does style. “When you put on Bleu de Chanel, you’re emphasizing a distinct experience, or maybe a certain look, occasion, or date,” the actor says. “For me, personally, there’s a specific intention behind fragrance. I’m not someone who wears a scent all the time. When I do, it becomes emblematic of a moment, and later there’s a nostalgia for that moment and it becomes something more meaningful.”

The Bleu de Chanel campaign, shot by legendary fashion photographer Mario Sorrenti, will be released in June.

While Met Gala themes can most easily be translated and identified through dress, beauty serves as another avenue for further creative expression. With some blatantly obvious tributes and some more subtle, the hair and makeup looks worn by this year’s Met Gala attendees reflected the “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” theme beautifully.

RELATED: Who Was Missing From the Met Gala?

Having left behind a legacy that’s both controversial and celebrated, there were endless possible references to be made at an event centred around the memory of Karl Lagerfeld’s impressive career. Though this designer was best known for fashion, his creative process was also closely intertwined with beauty, giving way to some of the “Karl-isms” we spotted on the glam scene at this year’s Met Gala.

From smokey eyes to bridal beauty and, of course, nods to Lagerfeld’s beloved cat Choupette, we break down how the 2023 Met Gala beauty trends that honoured the late Karl Lagerfeld and nailed the theme.

The significance of the smokey eye

A post shared by Emily Ratajkowski (@emrata)

When Met Gala attendees including Emily Ratajkowski, Keke Palmer, Kim Kardashian, and longtime Lagerfeld muse Cara Delevingne stepped out onto the Met carpet with slept-in smokey eyeshadow, we began to sense a trend. While this sultry eye look is a certified classic, it has deeper ties with Lagerfeld and his relationship to makeup. As a multi-hyphenate dabbling in photography, illustration and design, Lagerfeld’s artistic abilities stretched far beyond strictly clothing. Among various other mediums used to communicate texture in his drawings, Lagerfeld is known to have used eyeshadow.

In addition to using shadows for the sketches themselves, he always had a vision of how each model’s makeup would tie into his designs. “Karl was building a story with every collection, and there was no [disconnect’ between the makeup and the clothes,” shared Caroline Lebar, SVP of image and communications at Karl Lagerfeld, in a Vogue interview. “He had a vision of how she dressed. How she did her makeup. How she did her hair.” With this attention to detail, the creation of several makeup collections developed with big beauty players like Sephora and L’Oréal seemed to be a fitting extension of Lagerfeld’s creativity. Eyeshadow palettes packed with midnight blacks, sultry silvers and blendable browns proved to be the common thread throughout his makeup collections, mirroring Lagerfeld’s iconic monochrome look and the signature Chanel smokey eye — a recurring look that appeared on the runways of some of Lagerfeld’s most praised shows from the ’90s to the end of his career.

Fanciful felines

From Doja Cat’s sharpened claws and prosthetic snout to more subtle feline eyeliner flicks worn by stars like J.Lo and Vanessa Hudgens, one could argue that this year’s Met Gala beauty looks honoured Karl Lagerfeld’s blue-eyed Birman cat as much as the late designer himself. She’s a cover girl. She’s an Instagram icon. She’s essentially the heir to the Lagerfeld throne (and is reportedly set to inherit some of his millions). She is Choupette! As Lagerfeld’s feline companion and perhaps most prized possession, homages to Choupette and cat-inspired beauty looks were to be expected at this year’s Met Gala — and they did not disappoint.

After cat-sitting Choupette (whose name translates to “cute girl” in French) for French model and muse Baptiste Giabiconi in 2011, Lagerfeld was so fond of the cat and their time together that he decided to keep her. “There is no marriage, yet, for human beings and animals… I never thought I would fall in love like this with a cat,” he told CNN in 2013. In the years since, this fluffy feline has become as synonymous with Lagerfeld as his signature white ponytail and black sunglasses. When Choupette revealed on Instagram that she would not be walking the Met carpet — despite her eagerly anticipated attendance — we had to rely on celebrities and the power of makeup to channel her feline energy. And they sure did.

Pearls, pearls, pearls!

A post shared by Taylour Chanel (@taylourchanel)

Channeling Lagerfeld’s Chanel era, we observed pearls galore draped over gowns and hanging from the necks of Met Gala guests — and upon close inspection, pearl details were also worked into some of the best beauty looks of the night. Alton Mason (who was the first Black male model to walk in a Chanel show) accessorized his look with a single pearl at the inner corner of each eye, Gigi Hadid opted for an undereye placement of her micro pearls, and Lil Nas X was bedecked in pearls from head to toe, all nodding to the house of Chanel where pearls remain one of the brand’s most notable symbols. Coco Chanel famously stated that “A woman should have ropes and ropes of pearls,” a mantra which Lagerfeld continued to follow when he began working at the French fashion house in the 1980s. Layered pearls were featured in Lagerfeld’s debut collection at Chanel in 1983, and this precious gemstone continued to appear throughout his collections until his final show in 2019.

The black bow

We may view hair bows as a coquettet beauty accessory now, but the black bow will forever be associated with Chanel. Like pearls, the bow was an accessory favoured by Coco Chanel that Lagerfeld continued to incorporate into his looks long after her death and right up until his own. Under Lagerfeld’s rule, the black bow was used on Chanel runways in a multitude of imaginative ways: classically tying a model’s hair back in the Fall 1986 show, as a headband during the Spring 1990 show, miniature and everywhere at the Autumn 2005 show, and as a bridal accessory on muse Cara Delevingne for the Métiers d’Art show in 2014. On the Met Gala red carpet, our FASHION’s Winter 2022 cover star Sydney Sweeney went big and bold with her black bow, while Karlie Kloss, Camilla Morrone and Billie Eilish also took on the black bow trend.

Bridal beauty

In true couture tradition, Lagerfeld was known to close his haute couture shows with a bridal look, many of which became his most beloved and best-known creations. From ’90s brides Claudia Schiffer, Linda Evangelista and Devon Aoki to modern muse brides like Lily-Rose Depp and Kendall Jenner, Lagerfeld’s nuptial looks pushed the envelope with designs that surpassed traditional notions of wedding attire. In his honour, bridal beauty was abundant on the stairs of The Met. Met Gala co-chair Penélope Cruz accessorized her hair with a dreamy bridal veil (which was part of a hooded gown plucked from the archives of Chanel’s 1998 Spring collection), Ava Max adorned a pearl-encrusted headpiece to complete her bridal look, and Alton Mason topped off his “groom” getup with a rhinestone encrusted veil overtop his cornrows.

Talk about a Met Gala to remember. From Rita Ora’s foot-long nail chains (the coolest, albeit most impractical, nail trend ever?) to Naomi Campbell giving signature Naomi at her 16th (!!!) Met Gala, to Emma Chamberlain’s blue smoky eye and extra-long extensions, the Met Gala 2023 beauty looks did not disappoint. This year’s gala, honouring the late Karl Lagerfeld, gave us equal parts classic and understated (think Irina Shayk, Kate Moss and Gisele Bündchen each donning the hair and makeup looks we know and love them for) and bold and experimental (courtesy of Doja Cat and Lil Nas X, most notably).

Below, we walk you through our favourite Met Gala 2023 beauty looks and the inspo behind them.

Rita Ora’s foot-long pearl and diamond nail chains

Beloved nail artist Naomi Yasuda is the genius behind Rita Ora’s unbelievable foot-long jewel and pearl nail chains. Using Manucurist nail polish in the shade “Licorice” to get that jet black base, Yasuda revealed on her Instagram story that she “incorporated classic Chanel elements” like deconstructed, handmade pearls to achieve a memorable nail look that we certainly won’t stop thinking about for days to come.

Suki Waterhouse’s watercolour eyeshadow

Fresh off of spring’s hottest mini-series, Daisy Jones & The Six, model, singer and actress (actually, add one of our favourite TikTok follows to the list of her accolades, too), Suki Waterhouse, who joked that she’d turn up to the Met Gala tonight thinking the theme was Karl Marx, blew us away with her glam tonight. Paired with her usual romantic bouncy blowout, courtesy of stylist Candice Birns, Waterhouse gave us watercolour paint-chic with a multi-shade pastel eyeshadow look that we’re going to try and recreate ASAP.

Lil Nas X’s pearl-encrusted…everything

In a look that can probably be seen from space, Lil Nas X arrived at the Met Gala in silver body paint, glitter, pearls, jewels, and honestly, not much else (see for yourself), right down to his pearl-encrusted nails.  Taking the naked dress trend to an extreme, Lil Nas X’s look was the masterful work of none other than Pat McGrath and her team.

Doja Cat as Choupette

Forget a simple cat eye. Doja Cat went for cat face. (Er, in addition to a not-so-simple cat eye.) In what’s sure to become one of the Met Gala’s most memorable looks ever, Doja Cat walked the carpet paying homage to Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, Choupette, complete with prosthetics and all. Her makeup was the work of Emmy-winning makeup artist Ernesto Casillas, and FX makeup artist Malina Stearns. “We paid tribute to Karl Lagerfield’s beloved cat Choupette and gave Doja a sexy, feline eye using Charlotte Tilbury’s The Feline Flick Liquid Eyeliner,” wrote Casillas on Instagram.

Jessica Chastain’s blonde wig

Sans her signature red locks, a totally unrecognizable Chastain told reporters on the Met Gala red carpet that her new blonde wig “is not forever; it’s for Karl.” Chastain paired her new ‘do with dark sunglasses (and a gorgeous dark smoky eye by makeup artist Kristofer Buckle underneath) as a nod to Lagerfeld’s signature look. Excuse us while we shed a tear.

Emma Chamberlain’s sleek ‘do and smoky eye

Courtesy of makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan Fisher, who used the Lancôme Hypnôse Eyeshadow Palette in Bleu Hypnotique to achieve the metallic-smoky look, Emma Chamberlain arrived at the Met Gala donning a smoky eye we can’t stop obsessing over. Blue smoky eyes have been poised for a proper comeback for several seasons now, but we think Ms. Chamberlain may finally be the one to officially usher the look in and do it in a modern way. As for her stunning waist-length hair (quite the departure from the star’s choppy bob), it was courtesy of hairstylist Sami Knight, who used Hairitage tools to craft the Carla Bruni-inspired ‘do. “I always like to wash my extensions before use,” says Knight. “I find it makes them blend better with the clients natural hair, as it opens the cuticle somewhat.”

Next, the stylist applied blended Luxy Hair extensions in three different shades (Dark Brown, Cool Dark brown, and a touch of Mocha Bronde Balyage, “just to account for differences in hair shade; hair is often darker in the back, and lighter in the top and front naturally”), teased it at the roots and curled the ends before finishing the look with a baby blue headband. Oh, and you guessed it, hairspray was a must every step of the way.

Lizzo is a bona fide style icon. Since she came onto the scene, the “Good As Hell” singer has never been one to shy away from innovative fashion statements, especially when the ensemble involves bearing some skin. Her most recent head-turning look was just this week, when the star stepped out in a crystal see-through dress. The glistening, sheer purple outfit is reminiscent of the famous Swarovski crystal gown that Rihanna sported to the 2014 CFDA awards — even still, it is so uniquely Lizzo. The fashion moment has (understandably) been the topic of social media praise since the first snaps hit the internet. To her fans, Lizzo’s ability to consistently turn these types of risqué looks is a testament to her unshakable self-love. Now, she’s working to help others achieve the same self-confidence. Earlier this year, the singer announced her partnership with the Dove Self-Esteem Project, which aims to address confidence issues resulting from social media use.

Part of what makes Lizzo so great is that her aura of confidence is contagious. From her lyrics of self-assurance to her refreshingly candid social media presence, she seems to have it all together. But this has not always been the case. “My self-love journey was literally for survival,” she says. Since she began to gain popularity within the notoriously critical entertainment industry, Lizzo has become an advocate for body acceptance — not out of desire, but out of necessity — in response to the fatphobia she’s often received. “I thought, ‘If I’m going to continue living in this body, I have to find a way to like myself.’” And that she did. The star has become synonymous with the concept of self-love, and now she wants to help young people struggling to attain it.

Lizzo’s partnership with the Dove Self-Esteem Project addresses how social media can worsen our feelings of self-worth. A key part of the initiative is The Selfie Talk, a guide for parents and teachers wanting to discuss digital photo altering and unrealistic beauty standards with kids and teens. One of the tools available for download is Dove’s Confidence Kit, a self-esteem resource written by experts in the field designed to help parents and teachers navigate these difficult conversations. The kit was developed as a result of shocking survey findings — like the fact that by the age of 13, 80 per cent of Canadian girls have downloaded a filter or used an app to change the way they look in photos, or that 37 per cent of girls between ages 10 and 17 say they don’t feel confident posting a picture of themselves without editing it first.

“It was much easier before Instagram and TikTok,” says Lizzo. “My heart goes out to young people growing up in a world that’s constantly showing them who they should be.” The singer notes that trends in women’s body types have fluctuated through the decades — and this contributes to falling self-confidence. “Women’s bodies have always been seen as a trend, and this is inherently an issue. It’s so important to find love and acceptance within ourselves, because then no matter what movement or trend comes along, we know that we’re good.”

As for Lizzo’s role in changing the conversation, she’s ready to move past talking about her appearance. “My body has been politicized since I stepped onto the scene wearing leotards. It was shocking to see in 2015, but now you all know what it looks like. You’ve seen it naked, in couture and at the Met Gala. Let’s stop talking about it and normalize bodies just existing.”

In case you missed the news, Sofia Richie got married this past weekend. In what many (it’s us; we’re “many”) are already calling the wedding of the year, the model and Nudestix beauty director married music producer Elliot Grainge at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cap d’Antibes in the south of France. Her star-studded wedding was a lavish four-day event that included A-list guests like Nicole Richie, Cameron Diaz, and Paris Hilton, three custom Chanel gowns, and the most beautiful, glistening custom veil in the history of veils (covered in water resin droplets! I dew?! I can’t.)

@catquinn Sofia Richie’s wedding bridal veil by Chanel featured shimmering water resin droplet crystals. What do you think compared to rhinestone and pearl veils? Love!! #sofiarichie #sofiarichiewedding #sofiarichieweddingdress #sofiarichieveil #weddingveil #bridalveil ♬ original sound – &lt3

But perhaps what was most impressive about TikTok’s royal wedding was the bride launching her own TikTok account just four days before the big day, giving fans an unprecedented, real-time, intimate look at the star’s getting ready process leading up to the wedding. The GRWM to end all GRWMs, if you will.

Which brings us to: the makeup. Keeping with the theme of giving the people what they want, makeup artist Pati Dubroff, who did Richie’s makeup at the wedding, posted a TikTok from the Nice airport (!!) divulging all of the product she used to give Richie that timeless-yet-modern clean makeup glow on her big day.

A perfect mix of high and low products (think Chanel eyeshadow with Maybelline mascara), “Sofia’s wedding makeup was all about [being] fresh, clean and glowy,” says Dubroff. Can’t argue with that.

This article was originally published in January 2023 and has been updated.

With the announcement of this year’s Met Gala theme — “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” — and its corresponding (yet complicated) dress code, “In honour of Karl,” consider the buzz for the 2023 Met Gala fully underway.

The curiosity and speculation surrounding the looks to come and how the theme will translate onto the Met red carpet in May leaves us feeling nostalgic each year as we look to the past in search of clues. In my stroll down Met Gala memory lane, I found celebrity beauty looks to be equally as captivating as their fashion choices through the years.

Be it an 18th century bouffant reimagined in 2004 or nails dripping with “gilded glamour,” there’s nothing I appreciate more than a Met Gala look that’s completely committed to the theme and brief — a.k.a. do whatever is necessary to make the outfit, hair, makeup, and manicure a moment.

In anticipation of the 2023 Met Gala, we’ve gathered 10 of our favourite Met Gala beauty moments of all time.

Cher, 1985

Undisputedly a Met Gala icon, did you think this list would exist without Cher? In 1985, the >Believe singer looked every bit a glittering beauty with carved out cheekbones and hazy lavender eyeshadow at the “Costumes of Royal India”-themed Met Gala.

Naomi Campbell, 1995

Photography by Getty Images

Nothing says ’90s quite like chunky blonde highlights, brown-lined lips, and a brightly baked under eye. And who did it better than Naomi Campbell at the 1995 Met Gala? In her peak supermodel era, Campbell complemented her dazzling Versace gown with pure ’90s glam to attend the “Haute Couture”-themed Met ball.

Amber Valletta, 2004

Photography by Getty Images

In 2004, Amber Valletta gave us a historical how-to on baroque beauty with this bleached pompadour. A modern Marie Antoinette, Valletta was precisely on theme with this “dangerously” heightened hairdo for the “Dangerous Liaisons: Fashion and Furniture in the 18th Century”-themed event.

Sarah Jessica Parker, 2013

Photography by Getty Images

We can always rely on Sarah Jessica Parker for her continual commitment to Met Gala dress codes and dedication to doing anything in the name of a look. It was 2013 and the theme was “Punk: Chaos to Couture” when she paired a complex fishtail bun-meets-braid with a fanned headdress, made by haute couture milliner Phillip Treacy.

Lupita Nyong’o, 2016

Photography by Getty Images

Lupita Nyong’o’s 2016 Met Gala look will forever be remembered by this gravity-defying updo (literally). On the “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” Met Gala red carpet, Nyong’o revealed to André Leon Talley that her towering hair sculpted by hairstylist Vernon François (who also styled her shapely afro at the 2021 Met Gala), was partly inspired by the legendary Nina Simone.

Rihanna, 2017

Photography by Getty Images

For the “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between”-themed event in 2017, Rihanna proved herself a master of the “art of the in-between” and the art of Met Gala beauty. Painted by MUA Lora Arellano, RiRi’s Met makeup was the epitome of a statement look, with fuschia-flushed cheeks that melted into metallic pink eyeshadow accented by a bold berry lip.

Lily Collins, 2018

Photography by Getty Images

A real renaissance beauty gone rogue, Lily Collins challenged the notion of “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” with her occult-inspired glamour. The look featured a gunmetal smokey eye and Swarovski crystals complete with a single red tear drop. “I’d been thinking about rubies and stigmata and these virginal tears, all the religious iconography that goes with the theme,” said celebrity MUA Fiona Styles, creator of the look, on this symbolic teardrop in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Lady Gaga, 2019

Photography by Getty Images

As host of the 2019 Met Gala with the theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” Lady Gaga’s entrance was pure camp, complete with four jaw dropping outfit changes. Yet even throughout this theatrical display of couture, we couldn’t take our eyes off of her gold foil lashes and hot pink lip. Crafted by Sarah Tanno, an up-close look at Gaga’s glam reveals black and white graphic liner with under eye jewels, too.

Barbie Ferreira, 2021

Photography by Getty Images

Though it was only her first appearance at the Met Gala, Euphoria star Barbie Ferreira’s vintage glamour-inspired makeup for the “In America: The Lexicon of Fashion”-themed event will go down as one of our favourite beauty moments in Met history. Thin brows, a pop of purple eyeshadow and pearl accents resting at her middle part punctuated the roaring ’20s makeup look by Kali Kennedy.

Cardi B, 2022

Photography by Getty Images

On a busy Met Gala red carpet, it can be difficult to spot a manicure worth mentioning. But when we do, it’s because it’s truly a work of art. With her golden talons bedecked with silver chain detailing and a wrist chock-full of gold and silver jewels, Cardi B’s manicurist @MarieNailz nailed this look for the “Gilded Glamour” theme.

When it comes to awards season, nothing quite compares to the glitz and glamour of the Oscars. Hollywood’s biggest night not only celebrates the crème de la crème in film but also serves as a runway for the most unforgettable beauty looks of the year. And the Oscars 2023 beauty looks did not disappoint.

RELATED: Rihanna Is at the Oscars — See All the Best Looks From the Red Carpet

With A-listers like Michelle Yeoh, Rihannna and Lady Gaga in attendance, it’s no surprise that this year’s crop of looks were nothing short of jaw-dropping. From sculptural hair moments spotted on Ashley Graham, Halle Bailey and Danai Gurira to Jessica Chastain and Elizabeth Olsen’s modern takes on Old Hollywood glamour, the who’s who of Tinseltown pulled out all the stops on the champagne (yes, champagne!) carpet.

Ahead, we’ve rounded up the very best hair and makeup looks from the 95th Academy Awards.

Halle Bailey’s loc updo

Photography by Getty Images

The Little Mermaid star Halle Bailey served Disney princess in the most Oscar-worthy way, pairing her floaty powder blue tulle gown with an ethereal loc updo, fluttering lashes and matte skin.

Stephanie Hsu’s Barbiecore beauty

Photography by Getty Images

In another excellent hair moment, Hsu floated across the champagne carpet in a bubblegum pink Valentino number and the loveliest side-swept curls. Oscars newcomer Tsu, who scored a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, completed the look with shimmering lids, a slick of pink lipstick and glowing skin.

Florence Pugh’s sculptural updo

Photography by Getty Images

Can we officially crown Florence Pugh the queen of the artistic updo? Absolutely we can. The British star wore her signature blonde locks in a dramatic twist that doubled as a chic micro-fringe. To finish the look, Pugh sported a tiny cat-eye flick with fluttering lashes and a subtle pink lip.

Angela Bassett’s monochromatic moment

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star and Oscar nominee Angela Bassett was the picture of regal elegance, donning an electrifying purple Moschino gown that matched her lilac lids perfectly. And of course, we would be remiss not to mention Bassett’s voluminous curls, created by celebrity hairstylist, Randy Stodghill with Olivia Garden products, which added plenty of wow factor to the look.

Ana De Armas’ glittering lids

Photography by Getty Images

Pink was truly having a moment this Oscars evening, as Best Actress nominee Ana de Armas stunned onlookers with delightfully sparkly rose-gold lids and a shimmering pink lip. De Armas finished the look with sleek center-parted hair and a dazzling metallic Louis Vuitton gown that was simply *chef’s kiss*.

Rihanna’s well…everything

Photography by Getty Images

Leave it to Rihanna to give an absolute masterclass in Academy Awards glam. The newly minted Oscar nominee and mom-to-be stole the show with a spiky-slick updo, shimmering eyelids, scarlet lips and rosy blush. Add this look to your Pinterest board, stat.

Fan Bingbing’s Hollywood glam

Photography by Getty Images

Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing oozed old school red carpet glamour with her ultra-dramatic emerald green cape and sparkly silver gown. And while we can go on forever about the ’fit, it was the hair and makeup that truly knocked it out of the park. Bingbing’s timeless finger waves, smoked-out shadow, dramatic wing and knockout red lip created a beauty moment for the books.

Jessica Chastain’s classic elegance

Photography by Getty Images

Oscar presenter Jessica Chastain brought the red carpet back to life with a swipe of Charlotte Tilbury’s Matte Revolution Lipstick in the shade (wait for it) Red Carpet Red. To add to her golden glow, MUA Kristofer Buckle used Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Glow Glide Highlighter in Moonlit Glow and a dab of the brand’s latest Matte Beauty Blush Wand in the shade Peach Pop. Perfection. For her pitch-perfect hair, celebrity Hairstylist Renato Campora used Hair Rituel by Sisley-Paris products and brushes give her red locks just the right amount of Hollywood va-va-voom.

Danai Gurira’s sky-high updo

Photography by Getty Images

There’s only one word to describe Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Danai Gurira’s Oscars updo: exquisite. The look, inspired by traditional African hairstyles, was created by hair legend Larry Sims, and is reminiscent of Lupita Nyong’o’s equally excellent beehive-esque updo created by Vernon Francois last year.

Andie MacDowell’s au naturel locks

Photography by Getty Images

If you’re looking for a sign to grow out your grey, let this be it. Red carpet regular Andie MacDowell, who brought her daughter Rainey Qualley to the event, wore her signature silver curls in a laid-back chignon that defined easy elegance. The sophisticated hairdo added a touch of softness to her edgy kohl-rimmed eyes, metallic shadow and rosy red lip.

Red carpet season is in full swing and whether you’re into soft romantic waves, flouncy blowouts or sleek updos, there’s a hairstyle to inspire everyone (and attempt from home).

When digging into the secret behind these flawless celebrity looks, we discovered that its equal parts technique and choice of styling tools—and Dyson’s hair tools are usually the first to come to mind. Their innovative and award-winning range of styling tools has drummed up a lot of attention for good reason. They’ve each been technologically engineered to create better styles, for different hair types with less heat damage.

To really get into award show season, we asked celebrity hairstylist and Dyson Global Styling Ambassador Matthew Collins for his hottest styling tips and how we can recreate six of our favourite looks from home using Dyson’s beloved tool collection, including the Dyson SupersonicTM hair dryer, the Dyson AirwrapTM multi-styler and the Dyson CorraleTM straightener.

Camila Cabello’s tousled bangs and textured waves at the Grammys

A post shared by camila (@camila_cabello)

To create this sexy style, start by wetting the roots of your fringe really well and applying a small amount of volume mousse. Next, grab a brush and the powerful Dyson Supersonic hair dryerTM. Pop on the Styling concentrator attachment and blow dry your bangs in a back-and-forth motion so they’ll eventually lay flat, instructs Collins. The wide and thin design of the Styling concentrator is great for focused styling since it creates a high-velocity blade of air.

Then, swap in the Gentle Air attachment (great for faster, cooler drying without extra heat damage), flip your head upside down and blow-dry the rest of your hair to create as much volume as possible. Add in some textured waves using the Dyson Corrale straightenerTM. Taking inch-wide sections, start slow at the roots and turn the Corrale out away from your face and then move quickly from the midshaft to the ends.

“The Corrale has flexing plates, so it gathers every hair in your section properly, so you don’t have to squeeze the straightener. What this means is you get greater control, making it much easier to style and allows you to use fewer passes, which means less heat damage,” says Collins. Finish by brushing your hair with a wide-tooth comb, spray some texture spray and bind a few pieces with a little bit of dry paste.

Lizzo’s glossy curls at the Grammys

A post shared by Lizzo (@lizzobeeating)

Lizzo stole the show with this slick look. Start with wet hair, then comb out tangles and use your fingers to help form your curls. “Apply lots of smoothing conditioning products like leave-in conditioner and oil to get that high gloss look,” says Collins. Apply hair gel throughout for hold (not too much—you don’t want stiff curls). Gently comb out any tangles with a wide-tooth comb and softly blow dry using the Dyson Supersonic hair dryerTM and the Diffuser attachment. Diffuse your hair from the side rather than cupping your curl clumps from the bottom. Finish with a shine spray to make it look even glossier.

Bebe Rexha’s disco blowout at the Grammys

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Bebe Rexha (@beberexha)

Rexha turned heads with this Farrah Fawcett-inspired ‘do. Part your hair down the middle and using the Dyson Airwrap multi-stylerTM with the 30mm Airwrap barrel, start curling your hair out and away from your face. The cool tip on the Dyson Airwrap multi-stylerTM rotates to change the direction of your curl, making it easy to mimic this style. As you curl each section, leave the Airwrap on hot for 10 to 15 seconds, then use the cold shot for five to 10 seconds to help set your curl. When you get to the front of your hair, hold the Airwrap at a 45-degree angle to create the flip. Use a lot of mousse or texture spray to add elasticity to your hair, suggests Collins. To finish, gently brush it out and apply a mist of strong hold hairspray, making sure your hair is lifting away from your face.

Brandi Carlile’s short, wavy look at the Grammys

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Brandi Carlile (@brandicarlile)

Create Carlile’s cool wavy style by first applying mousse or texture spray on damp hair. Then, use the Dyson Airwrap multi-stylerTM with the Small firm smoothing brush attachment and brush your hair back until dry. “You can also brush it a little bit forward on top to create that kick-up she has,” says Collins. Next, grab your Dyson Corrale straightenerTM and create different types of textures and curls. “It’s very sporadic, not perfect,” says Collins. Finally, apply a little bit of texture paste to create smoothness and shine. Hot tip: For an extra voluminous side part, style your hair in the opposite direction and then flip it over.

Kerry Washington’s voluminous natural ponytail at Critics Choice

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Kerry Washington (@kerrywashington)

“One of the greatest things we’ve seen in the last few years is embracing natural hair on the red carpet, which is amazing,” says Collins. To create this extra voluminous ponytail, start by getting extensions that match your natural hair colour and texture. Wet them, hang them on clothes hangers, and let them air dry or use your Dyson Supersonic hair dryerTM with the Diffuser attachment for five to 10 minutes. For your hair, create a centre part and apply a light gel, then pull it back into a lower ponytail at the occipital bone. Start clipping in your extensions throughout your hair up to behind your ears, and then blend them in. You can do this upside down to create extra volume. Use a wide tooth comb to break up the texture a little, as it’s meant to look a bit tousled.

We missed seeing Zendaya and her awe-inspiring looks on the red carpet. Luckily for us, this awards season she’s back in full force and we couldn’t be more thrilled. The NAACP Image Awards and SAG Awards red carpets at the end of February served as the backdrop for two major glam moments from the Euphoria actor that we simply adore.

RELATED: The Chanel Lipstick This Makeup Artist Uses on Margot Robbie, and Everyone

With a retro bouncy bouffant bob and a mod ’60s lash moment à la Twiggy, Zendaya exuded an air of Old Hollywood beauty that commanded our attention on both red carpets.

A post shared by Lancôme Official (@lancomeofficial)

For the 54th NAACP Image Awards held on February 25, the twice-nominated actress wore two vintage ensembles from Versace (pictured above) and Prada. And her subtle soft glam was versatile enough to keep up with the costume change. The mood for this makeup look was nude — from her polished brows and a light wash of warm eyeshadow, to her brown-lined lips blended into a powdery pink matte pout using Lancôme’s L’Absolu Rouge Drama Matte lipstick in the shade “274 French Tea.

To complement her rosette-covered duchess pink Valentino dress at the SAG Awards the following night, Z upped the ante with a sugar-pink mod makeup look. On the eyes, Lancôme’s “Pink Pearls,” and “Filigree,”  Colour Design eyeshadows created a lustrous lid look, with an iridescent pop of shimmer at the inner corner to further liven up her glam. A lower lash line full of mascara-coated and pinched lashes added a Twiggy sort of flair to tie it all together. Over the cheeks, a swipe of a statement petal pink blush matching her lipstick caught our eye from every angle.

A post shared by RAOÚL (@raoulalejandre)

Makeup mastermind Raoúl Alejandre is the artist behind both of Zendaya’s jaw-dropping recent looks, but these two have been a dynamic beauty duo for years. Yes, we do still think about that wet-lid eyeshadow look he executed on the actress in 2021. You may also recognize his work on fellow Euphoria actress Alexa Demie, or in luxury beauty campaigns for Valentino and Lancôme. Rest assured that when Alejandre is responsible for Zendaya’s makeup, there will signatures like fresh skin, a pop of metallic, or a spider lash involved.

And you didn’t think we’d forget to break down her blowout bob, did you? For both events, a side-parted glossy bouffant styled by Tai Simon using OGX products — like their Silk Blowout Spray and Coconut Curls Decadent Creamy Mousse — added to the overall Old Hollywood appeal. When the actress first debuted her bob at a Euphoria reunion back in December 2022, we couldn’t wait to see how she would continue to style her new hairdo. And while knew she would always look like a dream because, well, she’s Zendaya, this cut and colour is proving to be one of her best looks yet.

It only takes one glance at this Emmy Award winner’s archive of red carpet moments (or her Instagram feed!) to determine that she is always up for trying new beauty looks. As a result, Zendaya keeps us on our toes wondering what she’ll do next with her hair and makeup. Be it a braided updo or a graphic liner moment, count on Zendaya to bring sheer glamour with an element of surprise to every red carpet she reigns over.

With high-profile clients like Margot Robbie, Kaia Gerber and Priyanka Chopra sharing a seat in her makeup chair, Pati Dubroff knows a thing or two about painting famous faces. The Chanel makeup artist finds a desirable balance between soft yet sultry in her artistry — favouring fresh skin with a smouldering eye and a subtle pop of colour on the lip — that makes us all wonder how she does it. So when our beauty director Natasha Boateng had the chance to speak to Dubroff, FASHION sought to answer just that.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by pati dubroff (@patidubroff)

Before she even picks up her first makeup brush, Dubroff takes the time (15 to 20 minutes to be precise) to massage her client’s skin and ensure she starts with a clean slate. Suffice it to say, skincare prep is a non-negotiable for this artiste. This makes her new ambassador role with Weleda Skin Food a fitting appointment (the Swiss-German brand recently expanded on its cult-classic product with an entire face range). As for the rest of her beauty ritual, we got Dubroff to break it down for us. From her best skincare secrets and makeup kit must-haves to the unorthodox beauty hack she once used at the Met Gala — we’re spilling it all here.

RELATED: The Best Met Gala Beauty Looks Ever — Period

Pati Dubroff’s prep process:

“These days — and these days being the past few years — I’ve noticed a huge difference in prepping the skin with tools, as in actual movement and manipulation, for lack of a better word. It makes such a big difference in getting the skin enlivened so that I then don’t need as much foundation; I don’t need as much makeup to make the skin look glowy and alive because it’s been rejuvenated with the use of tools and a massage. Even though it’s more work for me, it makes them look more vibrant and feel less stress in their faces. It’s like a perk-up. That said, I’ll always make sure that someone’s skin is clean first, as that’s most important — not everybody sits down at my makeup chair with clean skin. The new Weleda Skin Food Care Nourishing Oil-to-Milk Cleanser is the perfect trick for that.”

Her favourite skincare tools:

“The one I like to use the most is by a Japanese brand called ReFa. The quality of the metal used is excellent and it’s very thoughtfully designed. It may look like just your average handle with the two roller balls, but this tools isn’t just a straight up-and-down roller. The two balls actually mimic the grip of fingertips in massage as you’re rolling. I’m always telling people, ‘Don’t buy the cheap ones on Amazon that look the same!’ They’re not. And then, I think gua sha facial tools are beautiful. I have one made of metal from Face Gym and I like to keep it in the refrigerator. After massaging with my ReFa or the microcurrent ZIIP or the NuFACE, I’ll use my cold Face Gym tool to do some more massaging with a cold blast.”

Dubroff’s favourite foundation of all time:

“I’ve been using a brand from Japan, Suqqu, pretty exclusively for, like, 15 to 18 years — maybe longer. It’s the most beautiful formula.”

On blotting:

“I use blotting papers from Chanel (I’m so extra!), but I also love the ones from Selena Gomez’s line Rare Beauty. She has this really great compact that comes with a set of blotting papers, a powder puff and a mirror. It’s my favourite thing for touch-ups because I like to add a tiny bit of loose powder to the puff. I’ll then use the blotting paper over that makeup application to pick up extra shine as the day goes on, instead of layering powder upon powder upon powder.”

The essential beauty items in Pati Dubroff’s carry-on luggage:

“If I’m travelling and don’t have at least one full day buffer before I have to work, then I’ll bring a tiny makeup kit, along with my brushes and tools, for my clients because if my checked bags don’t make it, I need to know that I’ll be able to do my job. And luckily, when I travel I [typically] know who I’m working with, so I know their shades and I can even get an idea of what they’re wearing so I can plan it out. In my personal kit, I like to put my favourite creams into smaller jars and I always have a facial mist. I make sure that I have a good lip balm and I always have eye drops, too, for when I land. I also carry remedies, like Thieves Oil and nasal spray with some iodine in it to keep the nasal passages clean and open. I’ll pack eye masks from Bioeffect and a facial sheet mask that I’ll sometimes pull out if I’m bored on longer flights, because why not!”

Her absolute favourite Chanel lipstick shade:

Chanel Rouge Coco Flash No. 53 Chicness is the perfect nude that doesn’t look too dull or too grey. I use it on everybody, including myself. It’s probably the colour I use on Margot Robbie the most.”

Dubroff’s unconventional beauty hacks:

“One time I got Priyanka Chopra ready for the Met Gala and she had these Swarovski crystals applied as a bindi and as a beauty mark. I didn’t have the professional stuff that people would use to apply face gems, so I used eyelash glue to hold those gemstones in place and it worked perfectly. I’ve also literally used berries and cherries to make blush or to stain lips before.”
