If you caught the Usher concert 2024 Super Bowl last night, well, hats off to you. While it was certainly quite the game (so we heard) our eyes were on the celebs in the crowd — more specifically, the celeb beauty looks at the 2024 Super Bowl. And they did not disappoint.

Obviously we had our eyes peeled for Ms. Swift, who unsurprisingly showed up in a red lip — which isn’t just her signature lip colour, but also one of the Kansas City Chiefs’ colours. So, obviously. But she had another unexpected beauty trick up her sleeve, too. More on that below.

TayTay’s BFF, Blake Lively, attended the game in big, beautiful, bouncy curls (didn’t we tell you big hair was having a moment?), while Hailey Bieber debuted darker locks that already have a cutesy TikTok name (“chocolate syrup hair“— consider this our petition to bring back the good ol’, reliable word “brown”).

From Taylor Swift to Lady Gaga, these were our favourite celeb beauty looks at the 2024 Super Bowl.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift paired her red lipstick with a high ponytail that featured an accent braid along the side, and brow-skimming bangs. This is the singer’s second big appearance this month wearing an accent braid, so we can’t help but wonder: is this some kind of Easter egg, Swifties?

Lady Gaga

Photography via Getty Images

Lady Gaga’s makeup artist Sarah Tanno created a beautiful rhinestone look for the star, that was a throwback to Gaga’s 2017 Super Bowl performance look. A makeup slay and a nostalgic moment? Definitely one of our fave celeb Super Bowl beauty moments this year.

Blake Lively and Ice Spice

Accompanying Taylor in her $1.8 million Super Bowl suite (!!!) were Ice Spice and Blake Lively, who both looked stunning as always in gorgeous curls and nude lipstick.

Kim Kardashian

Speaking of signature beauty looks, makeup artist Adam Burrell posted a video of Kim Kardashian getting ready to take in the big game, with her famous long, dark locks cascading down her back paired with a dark smoky eye

Beyoncé

You know what they say: the bigger the hair, the closer to god! Queen Bey’s hairstylist Neal Farinah used products from Beyoncé’s upcoming line Cécred (launching next week!!!) to create these big, bouncy waves. The stylist captioned the photos “Super Bowl Texan hair” — ultra-fitting for the release of Beyoncé’s two new country singles last night.

Winnie Harlow

Supermodel (and former FASHION cover star) Winnie Harlow debuted new choppy bangs last night, and we can’t stop thinking about them. Once again, we must ask, should we get bangs?

Hailey Bieber

Rocking her new dark hair and glossy brown lips (likely Rhode’s Peptide Lip Tint in “Espresso”), Hailey Bieber’s striking Super Bowl look was definitely one of our faves of the night.

Lana Del Rey

Donning her signature voluminous retro blowout, thick cat eye liner and matte nude lip in a mirror selfie on her Instagram Story, Lana Del Rey perfectly demonstrated that Super Bowl beauty can still be totally glam..

Recently, I was at a party with several fellow beauty editors and the topic of sleep and nighttime routines came up. The group I was chatting with all agreed that their preferred regimen involves a thorough and complete skincare routine (naturally) prior to getting under the covers by 8 or 9pm to read in bed before hitting the lights. When it was my turn to share, I panicked and lied (I know, I know), saying I’m usually snoozing by 10pm. The truth? Time is just a number.

Back in 2018, I actually wrote a story for FASHION about the cultural obsession surrounding sleep — or more precisely, getting the most and best sleep possible. I didn’t get it. “Like a child passionately avoiding nap time,” I wrote (side note: this is suddenly a triggering analogy because I now have my own toddler and the thought of a skipped nap is bone-chilling), “I will happily be awakened any time, anyplace […] I welcome any interruptions from the — pardon the pun — snoozefest that is slumber.”

I know what you’re thinking: Now that I’m a parent, don’t I feel sooo silly for once implying that sleep was boring? Nope. As it turns out, I’m less interested in sleep than ever before. Instead, I’ve become utterly obsessed with milking every second of free time I get. Between working full-time (and then some), walking the dog, daycare pickup and the absolute chaos that is weeknight evenings with a toddler (IYKYK), when everyone’s finally fed and asleep, the last thing I want to do is call the day quits. Not when there are hours of TikTok to finally be consumed, reality TV to be binged, creepy domestic thrillers to be read, late-night existential crises to be had, and so on and so forth.

So as you can imagine, my lengthy evening to-do list doesn’t leave me with a ton of time for a comprehensive beauty routine. But I do want to disguise the fact that I’m a sleep-indifferent monster, which means that over the years, I’ve found the quickest, most effective beauty products that work while you sleep, so I don’t have to spend my precious evenings primping and priming.

Without further ado, you can shop my picks for the absolute best beauty products that work while you sleep, so you can get back to your own pressing evening activities, whatever they may be. See ya on the dark side!

The Golden Globes mark the unofficial start of awards season, so for that reason alone, they’ll always have a special spot in our hearts. And then there’s everything else we love: the red carpet, the glitz, and of course, the glam. Below are some of our favourite Golden Globes 2024 beauty looks, from Hailee Steinfeld’s oh-so-’90s updo, to Florence Pugh’s always amazing hair, and Skai Jackson’s bold smoky eye.

Amanda Seyfried

Photography by Getty Images

With hairstylist Renato Campora and makeup artist Kate Lee in charge of glam, it’s no wonder Amanda Seyfried’s Golden Globes 2024 beauty look is so major. Featuring a bold purple smoky eye (to match her dress) and sleek, old Hollywood waves, Seyfried’s look is simultaneously modern yet totally timeless.

Hailee Steinfeld

Photography by Getty Images

Makeup artist to the stars Ash K Holm teamed up with hairstylist Ricky Fraser to create Hailee Steinfeld’s gorgeous look for the evening. A beautiful updo and nude lip perfectly complemented Steinfeld’s full brows and matte skin, for a finished look that screams ’90s supermodel.

Margot Robbie

Photography by Getty Images

The flowing hair, the pink lip gloss, the bronzed skin — what’s not to love about our Barbie’s Golden Globes 2024 beauty look? Celebrity colorist Jacob Schwartz used Olaplex products to keep Margot Robbie‘s blonde highlighted strands healthy and shiny. “I coined the term ‘spun with gold’ because the hair looks lit from within, where it’s all cohesively lighter,” says Schwartz. “There are still highlights and there’s still dimension, but it looks more effortless. We’ve gradually gone blonder with Margot, but we’ve been touching it up and keeping it fresh and bright.”

Skai Jackson

Photography by Getty Images

Proof that you can really never go wrong with a metallic smoky eye, loads of lashes and long, flowing waves. Thank you, Skai Jackson, for the much-needed reminder.

Florence Pugh

Leave it to our short ‘do queen Florence Pugh to show up to the Golden Globes with yet another look we want to copy immediately. Hairstylist Adir Abergel created the perfect faux hawk-meets-pompadour on Pugh, while makeup artist Alex Babsky used Valentino makeup for her flawless, natural-glam beat.

Andra Day

Photography by Getty Images

Latte makeup, anyone? Bronzed, beautiful and glowing, Andra Day’s makeup is a 10 out of 10.

Dua Lipa

Photography by Getty Images

We’re still enamoured with Dua Lipa‘s vibrant red strands, which is why we’re obsessed with this Golden Globes 2024 beauty look. The glowy, natural makeup (heavy on the blush) doesn’t hurt, either.

Greta Lee

Makeup artist Naoko Scintu used Sisley Paris makeup on Best Actress in a Limited Series nominee Greta Lee. Lee’s glam included a soft pink lip and an all-over, lit-from-within glow we’ll be thinking about for days. Hairstylist Jenny Cho finished the look with sleek retro-glam waves.

Issa Rae

Makeup artist Joanna Simkin used Charlotte Tilbury makeup and skincare products to transform Issa Rae into a glowing golden goddess. Quite fitting for the Golden Globes, non?

Pom Klementieff

Former FASHION cover star Pom Klementieff‘s brown smoky eye and nude lip combo was courtesy of celebrity makeup artist Mary Wiles, who used NARS product to achieve the timeless look. Paired with Klementieff’s chic bleached blonde pixie cut, styled by Marcia Lee, this is a beauty look we won’t soon forget.

“I was quite late to the TikTok game,” says Sammi Jefcoate over a video call from Surrey, outside of London, England. “I ignored it for quite a long time because it was far too much dancing. I was like, ‘I can’t do that!’ I didn’t even want to talk to the camera.” She eventually joined TikTok in November 2021, after a fruitful four years as an Instagram content creator. The accessories brand founder (Jefcoate’s line, Ārdēo Studios, sells hats, scarves, belts and harnesses) had achieved success on the photo app by sharing her OOTDs, which featured lots of black leather and latex. “At the time, Instagram felt a bit iffy, like it might die,” says Jefcoate. “So I decided to join TikTok and just be myself — not an extrovert. I gained a million followers in a month.”

Since then, Jefcoate has amassed almost four million followers across both platforms (Instagram, as we know, did not die), and she continues to share a combination of her daily outfits — often mixing high-end designer items with goth staples like latex bustiers and leather harnesses — in-the-know beauty routine, regular nail art appointments and frequent visits to the tattoo parlour. Ah, yes…the tattoos. Covered from neck to toe in colourful traditional-style designs like anchors, snakes and hearts, Jefcoate has become TikTok’s most beloved heavily tattooed high-fashion girlie.

Sammi Jefcoate
Photography via Instagram/@bhambnails

“I got into alternative music in my teens, and it completely shaped who I am,” she says. “A lot of the band members I looked up to were heavily tattooed, and I was like, ‘I want that.’ The perception of being inked is different now, but back then, tattoo magazines were on the top shelf of newsstands so I couldn’t even get to them without looking like I was reaching for porn. [Laughs] I thought tattoos were so badass, and I immediately knew I didn’t want just one — I wanted to be covered. I was a goth kid, and it just made sense to me, aesthetically, to cover myself in tattoos.”

When it comes to ink, people generally fall into one of two categories: those who require each and every piece to have a sentimental story behind it and those who absolutely do not. Jefcoate says she belongs firmly and happily in the latter group. “I don’t need them to have meaning,” she says. “If something looks cool, I get it.” Her very first tattoo, which she got at age 17, was a sprinkling of stars. Her only requirement was that they be visible. “I got them on my wrist because I wanted something I could see every day.”

Sammi Jefcoate
Photography by Kaj Jefferies

One thing her new aesthetic has provided, says Jefcoate, is a sense of belonging. “Although my tattoos don’t individually have meaning, being tattooed has a lot of depth to me. It makes me feel like I have found myself,” she says. “And even though people have bullied me because of my tattoos, the clothes I wear and the bands I listen to, tattoos just mean everything; they have completely changed me. I am happy. That feels deep to me.”

Jefcoate is fascinated by the shift in society’s perception of tattoos (more than 40 per cent of millennials have at least one), a change she largely credits to heavily inked David Beckham — at least in England, where she is based. “People are walking around with neck tattoos now!” she says. “There was a time when I’d see a heavily tattooed person and stupidly assume they liked the same type of music as I do. I’d go over to chat and realize ‘Oh no, you’re just tattooed.’”

Sammi Jefcoate
Photography by Hollie Molloy

Jefcoate says that acceptance of women being inked from head to toe is still lagging behind (“Of course,” she says with an eye roll), particularly in the fashion industry. And even though by all accounts she is a fashion and beauty content creator, she insists that these industries haven’t warmed up to her quite yet. “I’ve been welcomed by TikTok with open arms — but not by the fashion and beauty industries. Well, maybe a bit by beauty brands, which are a bit more open-minded. After all, makeup can be washed off so it’s more of an artistic, creative community.”

Sammi Jefcoate

But fashion? “It’s not a space where I’m accepted at all,” says Jefcoate, who recounts how she regularly gets rejected from the fashion brands she reaches out to for potential social media partnerships. “Their response is always ‘Something’s not quite right’ — even after my agent shows them concrete data of what I can sell. I know my followers assume that I’m being gifted the fashion items I share, but that’s just not the case. Those big fashion houses have built incredible businesses that they’re protective of, so they’re not interested in someone like me. Maybe that’ll change in time, but I’m not holding my breath.”

Below, the must-have beauty products Sammi Jefcoate swears by.

“Fragrance affects everyone,” says Emma Mackey. “It’s a chemical thing.” The Sex Education and Barbie actor is the face of Goddess, the latest addition to Burberry’s fragrance family. Twenty-seven-year-old Mackey is a natural, easygoing conversationalist; her dry humour makes itself instantly apparent as we chat in one of the many buildings that make up The Newt in Somerset, a 320-hectare estate turned luxury hotel in England where chickens, deer and cows roam the property. “It’s a good sign when you can’t smell a perfume on yourself too much; it means it’s melding with your pheromones,” says Mackey. “I mean, I’m no connoisseur — maybe that’s completely wrong,” she laughs.

Later that night, Mackey hosts a candlelit dinner toasting the launch of Goddess. The intimate affair takes place in the middle of a clearing in the forest, overlooking the English countryside, and features a mysterious vapour wafting through the air that turns out to be the new fragrance being sprayed out from among the trees. The result is a dreamy, foggy setting that smells sweet and woody — enchanted fairy-tale-core at its finest.

Photography courtesy of Burberry

Goddess is a vanilla-forward eau de parfum featuring an unheard-of trio of vanilla notes: vanilla-infusion top notes, vanilla-caviar heart notes (created with a patented and sustainable new extraction process that doesn’t use water or other solvents, thus producing a powerful and undiluted form of vanilla) and vanilla-absolute base notes. Lavender, ginger and cocoa round out the fragrance profile. “Vanilla is usually only found in base notes,” says Amandine Clerc-Marie, the nose behind the fragrance, adding that formulating Goddess was a revolutionary process for her as a perfumer — one that changed her mind about how vanilla could be used. “I got to really play with vanilla and feature it throughout the entire perfume.”

Clerc-Marie’s starting point for formulating Goddess was the idea of “powerful kindness.” She says that aside from vanilla’s nostalgic warmth, the pod itself provided plenty of inspiration. “Visualize a vanilla bean; it protects its wonderful black pearls like they’re treasures. There’s something very kind about it, like a woman protecting her kids or a lioness protecting her cubs.”

It’s a nod to the Burberry Goddess campaign, which shows Mackey running with lionesses — a simple-yet-stunning commercial that the actor describes as “epic.” Mackey says she was drawn to Goddess’s vanilla-soaked formula because she was reminded of her mom’s baking. “My family has a very specific secret cookie recipe that we’re all crazy about,” she says. “And I’ve always loved the action of scraping vanilla seeds out of the pods. It’s very satisfying.”

With this latest launch, Burberry ushers in a new era of vanilla — one that’s less sticky-sweet and more complex than the icing-scented sprays we doused ourselves in as teens perusing fragrance counters at the mall. Instead, Goddess is mature, radiant, bold, nuanced and, yes, nostalgic. After all, “vanilla is a universal addiction,” says Clerc-Marie.

“I didn’t grow up dreaming of being a model; I grew up dreaming of being a CEO,” says Deepica Mutyala over a video call. The founder of Live Tinted, which launched at Sephora Canada this past summer, is dialing in from a gorgeous light-filled living room in L.A. (“Can you believe this is an actual house and not just a Zoom background?” she laughs.)

Mutyala is celebrating Live Tinted’s five-year anniversary, but she is quick to point out that it’s been “five years for the brand but a lifetime of manifestation [for her].” Prior to launching Live Tinted, Mutyala was doing “the influencer thing,” and before that, she worked in the corporate side of the beauty industry. But she rose to fame after her second-ever YouTube video (2015’s “How to Cover Dark Under Eye Circles”), which showed her using red lipstick as an undereye colour corrector, went viral, racking up 10 million views.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Deepica Mutyala (@deepica)

Shortly after, she launched a digital platform — also called Live Tinted — to celebrate diversity in beauty and encourage fellow women of colour (Mutyala is of Indian descent herself) to share their makeup tips and questions. “When I launched the online community, I knew I wanted to one day create a line of beauty products, so it was kind of like a focus group,” she says. “But the conversations had to be organic; I didn’t want to launch a brand just to launch something. So I asked this group of women of colour what their biggest beauty concern was, and 98 per cent said it was hyperpigmentation. It quickly became obvious that there was a gap to fill in the market.”

In May 2019, Live Tinted officially made the transition from a digital platform to a beauty brand, with the launch of its first product, Huestick Color Corrector, a multi-use colour stick that can be worn on lips, eyes and cheeks and, of course, as an undereye colour corrector. Since then, the company has launched bronzers, liners, brushes and highlighters — just to name a few. The robust lineup is especially impressive considering the founder had “no mentor, no guidance, no incubator, nothing.” “I built Live Tinted from scratch — what I did have was the most delusional confidence,” jokes Mutyala. “I had such an insane level of ambition and drive that I don’t think anything could have stopped me.”

“I want Live Tinted to be so big that it just normalizes the brown girl coexisting with everyone else in the beauty industry.”

Growing up in a predominantly white neighbourhood in Texas, Mutyala spent her teen years experimenting with wearing blue contact lenses and putting blond streaks in her hair in an attempt to look more like her peers. She says founding Live Tinted has helped her speak to, and heal, her younger self. “I hated myself for so much of my life because I didn’t feel beautiful. Because girls can see themselves in Live Tinted and now in retailers like Sephora, they’re able to say ‘I’m beautiful, because this retailer that stands for beauty is showcasing people who look like me.’ I know it because I feel it, too.”

The end goal, says Mutyala, is for the brand to be so massive that its commitment to diversity and inclusion isn’t novel. “Live Tinted isn’t called, like, Brown Girl Makeup,” she says. “I wanted it to always centre brown women — and I think we do that with every decision, every product, every campaign — but I want Live Tinted to be so big that it just normalizes the brown girl coexisting with everyone else in the beauty industry.”

The latest launch is the Hueskin Serum Concealer, a product that has been many years in the making. “Man, I wish people knew what goes into making a product that has 20 shades,” laughs Mutyala. She says the formula had to be perfect because of “what this product means to the community.” “Us young brown girls never had the right concealer shade,” she explains. “We always had to mix products or deal with our moms and aunties telling us to use a lighter shade because lighter skin was considered more beautiful. Entering the complexion category as a brand that has always tried to change the narrative around colourism, we had to do it right. I did not take this launch lightly.”

Mutyala’s commitment to Live Tinted’s mission radiates through the screen. She seems hyper-focused and clear-headed, which she reveals is the result of a recently implemented pared-back work schedule. This summer, she hired a leadership team to help her navigate Live Tinted’s expansion, allowing her space and time to ideate and plan for the future. “I’m setting boundaries for the first time, because I’ve done the hustle and grind for a decade now,” she says. “I’m just now, in my 30s, learning basic life skills like how to cook, how to date, how to take care of a home — things that other people learned in their 20s. I couldn’t prioritize them then because I was building a brand, which is OK; I’m trying to be kind to myself about it. The company had to be 150 per cent of my focus then to get it to where it is today.”

It’s this intensity and determination that has led to Live Tinted’s success, but the pressure and weight on Mutyala’s shoulders is obvious as she speaks about the sacrifices she’s made. “Because I have a purpose-driven brand, there’s a heaviness that comes with the decisions I make,” she says. “It sometimes slows down other parts of the business. I know that other brands exist without putting so much emphasis on the purpose of what they do. They’re like: ‘Here is a product. It is what it is.’ And not all companies have to exist for a purpose. But I wouldn’t be proud to be the founder or CEO of that type of company.”

“There’s still a stigma around the topic of AIDS,” says R&B singer Mya over the phone. “It’s best to lead with love but also information, awareness, education and community in order to achieve breakthroughs.” The Grammy Award-winning singer, who has been a long-time advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and the fight against AIDS, will be performing at the Bloor Street Entertains after-party at the Four Seasons Hotel Toronto, in support of the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research, later this week.

When Mya dials in, she’s one week away from her Toronto show and is calling from Germany, where she’s set to hit the stage before making her way to Canada. This year, the “Case Of The Ex (Whatcha Gonna Do)” singer celebrates 25 years in the music industry, and to commemorate the milestone, she launched deluxe editions of both her Mya and Moodring albums.

When Mya’s eponymous debut album dropped in 1998, the young artist appeared on the album cover sporting a true-to-the-’90s brown lip, with a cascade of curls peaking out beneath a brown bucket hat. When I ask if she’d always embraced her curls, she tells me her hair was once a source of insecurity, as she was often teased about her “different” curly texture.

“I worked so hard to try to figure out what products to use to ‘tame’ my hair because it was considered, at the time, unruly,” she explains. As the budding musician found a home in the arts, she says she felt “uplifted” about who she was and how her hair looked. “I eventually embraced my hair in my later teen years, when I was around healthier environments through the arts. We weren’t focused on vanity and exterior but more so a common goal,” Mya explains. “Being around healthy, positive-minded individuals that aren’t focused on vanity usually comes with less insecurity and ignorance.”

These days, Mya uses her hair as a form of self-expression. “Hair speaks volumes. Literally,” she laughs. “As an entertainer, I’m conveying art, and art is spoken in so many different ways and mediums, from colour palettes to hairstyles.”

“The entertainment [industry] often requires you to show up as a character that you may not always be in your personal life,” says Mya. One of her favourite looks to sport on stage? A classic ponytail that keeps her hair out of her face. From loc and braid ponytails to natural and drawstring ponies in a variety of hues, lengths, and textures, Mya has mastered the art of the performance pony. “It’s my go-to, and I don’t necessarily need a hairstylist for it. It keeps the budget down,” she laughs.

Though folks often looks to celebrities for hair inspiration, Mya feels that many trends sparked by stars over the years stem from culture and reference things that have long been documented in history books and art. “Then, we see these looks show up, possibly in a music video, and we take it and make it our own.”

A post shared by MYA (@myaplanet9)

As the natural hair movement has progressed, the singer says social media has sparked healthy hair conversations between women around the world. Mya says with this conversation comes increased self-awareness. “We sometimes try to achieve an unrealistic, ever-changing standard of beauty, when really, the hair that we were born with is ‘good hair’,” says Mya, who performed at Frizz Fest — a natural beauty festival designed to promote self-love through hair — this summer.

A post shared by MYA (@myaplanet9)

Mya’s concerns with hair health and overall wellness are a natural extension of her commitment to the vegan lifestyle. She first went vegan in 2014, and launched her own vegan transition guide for fans in 2018. In 2017, she walked the Grammy Awards red carpet in head-to-toe, cruelty-free attire. In the years since, she has remained vocal about her lifestyle choices via social media.

After 25 years in the spotlight, Mya continues to prove, through a plethora of philanthropic endeavours, that she is much more than just a musician.

“I’ve realized that education is my sweet spot. People seem to like the way I break things down,” says makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes. “I make it easy for them to wrap their heads around concepts so they can be successful with the makeup look they’re doing.” Indeed, the England-born, New York-raised makeup artist is clear, concise, and almost impossibly helpful in the way she explains makeup tips.

Hughes is calling from her home in Brooklyn, and her face appears on my screen while she’s mid-makeup application, applying the finishing touches to her radiant skin (courtesy of her very first product launch, KJH.Brand’s Hyper Shine High Lite Kit, made up of an illuminating pigment available in four shades, a clear serum and a brush) first thing on a cold Monday morning.

We chat about makeup (duh) and I tell her I’m having trouble with the lasting power of the cream and sheer tint products in my routine. “I need to ask some questions,” she says. “First, what concealer are you using?” I tell her and after a second of rustling sounds behind the camera, Hughes holds up a handful of products, including the very concealer I’ve just named.

And we’re off. Suddenly she is swatching and blending, demonstrating each step on her face and on the back of her hands as she goes.

A post shared by KATIE JANE HUGHES (@katiejanehughes)

“The reason I wanted to create a brand in the first place was because not a lot of brands are actually educating consumers on how to use their products,” says Hughes. “There are so many nuances to why makeup works and doesn’t work. Every brand is like, ‘Here’s a mascara. You already know how to put this on, don’t you?’ But do people really know? Like, if someone’s mascara is transferring under their eyes, is it the mascara that’s the problem? Or is it the eye cream they’re using?”

Ironically, Hughes says her “lightbulb moment” occurred when someone sent her a DM asking for a tutorial on how to put mascara on. “I replied and said, ‘Wait, what do you mean?’” laughs Hughes. “They were like, ‘You know, how to really put mascara on. How do you get to the root of the lash? How do you make them fan out?’”

The encounter was a reminder that when it comes to makeup (and most other things) there truly are no dumb questions. Her willingness to roll up her sleeves and really meet people where they are in their makeup routines and knowledge level — so that she can help them determine their best course of action — has undoubtedly contributed to her impressive social media following (884,000 on Instagram and 180,000 on TikTok).

Hughes’ approach to showcasing even the most editorial makeup looks and techniques is refreshingly patient and informative. Remember your favourite high school math teacher who somehow explained calculus in a way that made it just click, after no one else could? Hughes is that teacher in the world of makeup. “It’s really humbling that people have a certain level of comfort with me,” says Hughes. “I think education and helping people really understand how to use a product is advocating for them.”

A post shared by KATIE JANE HUGHES (@katiejanehughes)

And if you’ve come to Hughes’ page for the makeup tutorials, you’ve probably stayed for the playfulness and overall positive vibes. This is at least in part because, like many beauty industry pros, Hughes’ own history with makeup began with her mother. A stay-at-home mom during the week and a singer on weekends, Hughes’ mom would transform every Thursday night.

“Watching that transformation from her being mom, into this glamazon wearing a beautiful bold red lip — perfectly applied without a mirror, by the way — loads of bronzer, and the blackest, thickest mascara… it was just very iconic,” she says. “I understood from a young age how makeup can transform and completely change your mood, your energy, everything.”

Just when you thought there couldn’t possibly be bigger news in Harry Styles-land than the singer shaving his head, Styles’ beauty and lifestyle brand, Pleasing, has entered the world of fragrance. Pleasing by Harry Styles launched two years ago with six unisex nail polishes before adding skincare products, colour pigments, accessories and more.

As of today, you can explore the brand’s first foray into fragrances with the launch of three scents: Closeness (a warm, woody musk with notes of cardamom, cashmere woods and bamboo), Bright Hot (a potent amber scent with notes of vanilla, tobacco, plum and cedarwood), and Rivulets (a fresh second-skin-like blend of white linen, lemon and black pepper).

The trio of scents were produced in collaboration with perfumer Jerôme Épinette (the nose behind the iconic line of Byredo scents) and fragrance house Robertet.

Cloud skin. Balletcore makeup. Coquette beauty. Today’s biggest beauty trends feature blurred edges and cotton-candy hues. They swap the eclectic for ethereal, the defined for dreamy. The end result? Looks that could have been plucked straight from a Sofia Coppola film. And at the centre of this romance renaissance is pastel makeup — think mint green, baby pink, lavender and powder blue. But after a decade of refining our razor-sharp winged-liner application and nailing sculpted contour, perhaps our soft-pastel technique could use some perfecting. After all, we’re not talking about an annual spring fling with pink blush. Pastels for winter? Groundbreaking.

“We’re seeing a shift away from makeup defined by seasons and structure,” says makeup artist Veronica Chu. “When it comes to wearing pastels, look for products that are long-lasting. Because these are softer shades, you want them to last and not fade throughout the day. Eyeshadow primers are a great way to ensure this.” To pull off the look, Chu suggests sticking to one or two pastel eyeshadows at a time. “These soft shades can easily blend together and turn into a different colour entirely.”

A common concern with pastel makeup is how quickly and easily it can go from soft to juvenile. (Remember your first makeup kit from the toy store? Pastels galore.) To ensure that the look is elevated, not elementary, opt for matte finishes, says Violette Serrat, a makeup artist and Guerlain’s creative director of makeup. “A shimmery pastel can veer toward childish territory, while a matte finish looks more mature.” For some contrast in textures, opt for ultra-dewy skin. And Serrat recommends finishing any pastel eye makeup look with mascara. “Otherwise, you can erase your features,” she says. “So, black mascara — always.”

Chu cautions that “pastels with shimmer can accentuate fine lines or wrinkles and may actually make your eyes appear smaller or create a shape you may not desire. Poppier pastels with no shimmer will look cleaner and more modern.” And because no makeup look is complete without blush, both pros suggest (what else?) pink blush as the cherry on top of your sweet-as-pie look. “I love pink blush and pastel eyeshadow together,” says Chu. “There’s something very angelic about the pairing.”

Shop these pastel-hued eyeshadows and eyeliners to add some softness to your look this winter.

Customization has become standard in the beauty industry, with personalized offerings available across all categories — from pH-adapting makeup that promises a truly perfect match to AI-powered skincare that delivers a made-for-you approach to treating complexion woes. But what happens when consumers still want more? They take customization into their own hands.

Enter fragrance layering. “Layering scents is about being creative with what you have,” says TikTok content creator Noelle (@_iamnoelle), who teaches her 45,000 followers how to effectively mix and match perfumes. She says they began messaging her after being disappointed with fragrances they’d ordered online without having sniffed them first. (The practice has become increasingly common, with a whopping 773 million global consumers relying on e-commerce platforms to get their fragrance fix.)

“They’d want to essentially ‘correct’ the smell,” says Noelle. “Maybe it was too citrusy, too woody or not sweet enough for their taste. Layering can help cover up certain notes of a perfume or make others stronger.” Noelle’s go-to method is combining scents with similar or complementary notes. (Her favourite pairings are vanilla and coffee, lime and coconut and jasmine and musk.) But, she insists, there are no rules. “It all comes down to personal taste.”

Gone are the days of having a signature scent that makes a daily appearance. Instead, fragrance wearers — especially Gen Z consumers, who have grown accustomed to a unique-to-them beauty routine — are opting to combine different scents to create something entirely new and one-of-a-kind. “Developing a perfume is something many of us dream of doing,” says Noelle of the #PerfumeTok community. “Layering fragrances is the closest we can get to creating our own unique scent.”

After all, the chances of walking into a party wearing the same perfume as someone else are relatively high, especially if the scent in question is particularly popular or buzzy. But the chances of wearing the same multiple fragrances as someone else? Nearly non-existent.

These editor-approved pairings blend new launches with current faves for combos that feel totally fresh and new.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Paris Aqua Media Cologne Forte paired with Skylar Salt Air Eau de Parfum

With its notes of verbena, bergamot and sweet fennel, Aqua Media is a tangy and vibrant aromatic that almost sparkles and fizzes upon first spray. Some fragrances take a while to introduce themselves to you, peeling back their layers slowly. Others arrive in a more explosive fashion that demands immediate attention. Hermès’ newest launch falls into the latter category. A cheerful, spritzy blend of ginger and lychee that bursts onto skin, Tutti Twilly is the perfect companion to The 7 Virtues’s Lotus Pear, a bright blend of peach, pear and mandarin that is as fresh and sweet as it is graceful. Imaan Hammam has been such a fixture in the fashion and beauty industry for the past decade that it’s easy to forget she’s still in her 20s. The model was just 13 years old when she was scouted and 16 when she signed her first contract. Shortly after, Hammam — who was born and raised in Amsterdam to a Moroccan mother and an Egyptian father — moved to New York City, where her career instantly took off. (Like, really took off. Her runway debut was in Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fall 2013 couture show, and a few months later she opened Riccardo Tisci’s Spring 2014 Givenchy show.)

“I grew up on the east side of Amsterdam, which is a neighbourhood known for its diversity,” says Hammam proudly, over a Zoom call. The 27-year-old is chatting from her New York City apartment, which she describes as an eclectic and colourful homage to her heritage. Hammam says Moroccan dishes, rich oud incense and Arabic music are constants in her home and names legendary Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum as one of her favourite artists. “Her lyrics are like poetry, and when I’m in my feelings, she is definitely on my playlist,” says Hammam. “Growing up, I was exposed to so many cultures, and I think that really impacted my view of the world. I see beauty in everything.”

This perspective has certainly taken her far. Earlier this year, Hammam was announced as the newest face of Estée Lauder, making her the brand’s first Afro-Arab ambassador. It’s a full-circle moment for the model. “When I was eight years old, I was shopping with my mom and we saw this big Estée Lauder billboard featuring [Ethiopian model] Liya Kebede,” says Hammam. “I remember thinking, ‘Whoa, this woman kind of looks like me.’” At the time, Kebede had signed on to be the first Black model to front an Estée Lauder campaign. “It was the type of representation I needed to see.”

Fast-forward another eight years, when a then-16-year-old Hammam began modelling in New York City and was once again faced with a lack of representation. “No one knew how to do my hair,” she recalls. “I would have to straighten it before going to a job or a casting because my natural texture wasn’t really accepted.” Soon, Hammam realized she needed to become the representation she wanted to see. “I was so over it. I woke up one day and said, ‘I’m done.’ I showed up to all my castings with my big natural curls. I had to really find the confidence to be like: ‘Nope, I’m not going to change for you. This is my hair.’”

Confidence like that was impressive for such a young model, but Hammam was certainly not lacking in the strong female role model department growing up. One of six kids in a blended family, she says her older sister was “like a second mom.” And then there’s her first mom, who Hammam references several times throughout our conversation. To describe them as close feels like it would be a wild understatement. In fact, nearly every topic brings us back to Hammam’s mom, a woman she describes as “iconic” and “a trendsetter.” Her pure joy when talking about her mother is palpable — even through a laptop screen. “She was a North African Arab woman who moved to the Netherlands in the ’70s. She was so strong. She still has this confidence and glow about her. Whenever I walk into a room, I try to channel her,” says Hammam, grinning from ear to ear. “She introduced me to the hammam spa experience, shared her recipes for DIY beauty, showed me how to use essential oils and gave me Moroccan scrubs for my body and argan oil for my hair. To this day, my mom will call me and say ‘You have to use honey; put it all over your face,’” laughs Hammam, who, at this point, is fully beaming. “Just thinking about her makes me so happy.”

Hammam tells me about her beloved mother’s killer style, describing childhood memories of watching her get glammed up in her signature red lipstick, gold hoops and braids. “She was — and definitely still is — a maximalist who liked to pull out full looks.” After our call, I’m still thinking about Hammam’s descriptions of her vibrant family matriarch, so I browse through the model’s social media and find joy-filled photos of the two together. As I continue scrolling, I’m touched by what else I see: selfies and behind-the-scenes shots of the supermodel looking radiant and confident. In many of them, she’s wearing red lipstick, gold hoops and braids.

Transitioning our wardrobe from fall to winter attire is a routine that Canadians know all too well. Our beloved linens and silks get relegated to the back of our closet, hidden behind bulky wools, corduroys and cashmeres, as we attempt to capture the feeling of a warm hug amid sub-zero temperatures. And forget about slipping on a single sweater; layers reign supreme when it comes to cold-weather cocooning.

But did you know that as your clothes shift and evolve for the season, so, too, should your skincare routine? Take inspiration from your wardrobe and opt for thicker textures and multiple layers for extra protection. Intentional layering of hydrating elixirs like serums, creams and balms will lock in much-needed moisture, ensuring that it doesn’t escape from your skin barrier.

“In the winter, skin is more prone to dehydration, which can present as dryness, cracking and eczema,” explains Dr. Roni Munk, a Montreal-based dermatologist. “It’s important to change your skincare routine to better adapt to the climate. In colder weather, I recommend that people not only moisturize more frequently — to better tolerate harsh and dry conditions — but also use a thicker moisturizer. The thicker the emollient, the more hydrating it is.”

Reach for products that include ceramides or hyaluronic acid in the ingredients list, as they help replenish and strengthen the skin barrier, which inevitably takes a hit in extreme temperatures. “Hyaluronic acid, in particular, will actually help us maintain our own internal moisture levels, as opposed to just adding additional exterior moisture,” says Munk. And if your skin is sensitive to cold temperatures, he suggests reducing the concentration or frequency of use of the exfoliants in your routine, like retinol and acids such as glycolic, salicylic, lactic and mandelic.

As you prepare to embrace (or simply try to make the best of) the coldest time of the year, swaddle yourself in luxe sweaters and scarves, balms and creams.

Every corner of social media has key players who have mastered the art of the shock factor. On #BeautyTok, no one does it better than Meredith Duxbury.

Her videos are hard to miss, even harder to scroll past, and are centred on her signature makeup-application technique: a very heavy-handed approach — and that’s putting it lightly — that has helped her rack up over 18.5 million followers on TikTok (and three million on Instagram and YouTube combined).

She applies no fewer than 10 pumps of foundation all over her face (including her eyelids and lips) and then, using a circular motion, rubs in the thick coat of makeup with her hands as if it were the most hydrating moisturizer in the world. And then comes concealer, contour, brow gel, blush, eyeshadow and mascara — the works. She often lip-synchs to a popular song throughout the video. Even if you’re not on #BeautyTok, this is probably starting to ring a bell.

“I probably use 25 to 30 products each time,” says Duxbury over the phone from New York City. “It depends on how intricate the look is.” Ah, yes, the look — the final result after a small mountain of products have been applied and blended. After all is said and done, Duxbury’s makeup looks, well, normal. In fact, it looks great.

Does it look like a full face of makeup? Sure. But it’s certainly no more extreme than the full beat that’s popular on TikTok.

So why the dozens of steps if the final product could probably be achieved with far less? Duxbury insists she’s been doing her makeup like this for years; she began wearing heavy, full-coverage foundation to cover her freckles, a former insecurity of hers. “I started noticing that my beauty sponge was absorbing a lot of product,” she says. “When I’d use my hands, the foundation would melt really nicely into my skin.”

The technique got her noticed on TikTok, and she quickly skyrocketed. By December 2020, she had built up a following of one million. That month, she started #TheFoundationChallenge, inviting others on TikTok to try her technique. By January 2021, she had grown her following to a whopping seven million. Today, she is the second-most-followed TikTok beauty content creator, and her most-watched video currently has more than 135 million views.

Photography by Stepan Filenko

With this overnight virality came an obsession with creating her next hit. “At the time, I was really stressed,” Duxbury confesses. “I put so much pressure on myself, and I’d be so upset if I made a video that didn’t get, like, 30 million views. I’d be up all night checking my numbers; I couldn’t sleep.”

These days, she says, she doesn’t get sucked into the cycle: “The key to going viral is not doing something just because you think it’s gonna go viral; you have to really love it. The great thing about TikTok’s algorithm is that it gives everybody a fair chance. You don’t have to have connections or a ton of existing followers to go viral.”

Another reason she prefers the video app over others is because it aligns with her style of working and communicating. “I have ADHD, and the way I work is very fast-paced,” she says. “I lose interest in things unless they’re quick and to the point, so with TikTok being such short-form content, it allows me to get out what I need to say in 15 to 30 seconds.”

Duxbury’s most recent project is a limited-edition collaboration with Morphe (featuring two palettes, a multi-purpose gloss, a lip liner and lip glaze duo and a brow gel and brush), although she hopes to launch her own stand-alone brand one day and become a permanent fixture in the beauty world — an industry she says has been “very welcoming” to her and her controversial technique.

“That’s the beauty of makeup and why I think people get into the industry — there are no rules or limits; everyone feels free to do what they want,” she says. But when that day comes, don’t expect a minimalist no-makeup makeup offering. Duxbury says that doing natural makeup doesn’t challenge her brain. “With these complex, intricate looks, you need a steady hand, the lines have to be crisp and there’s blending — there’s just a lot to think about,” she explains. “I could do natural makeup with my eyes closed, but with full glam, you have to really pay attention.”

“I wanted to make products that the majority of the world could use,” says Sharon Chuter over a Zoom call from London, England. “It sounds silly to even say this out loud because it’s not a genius or radical idea.”

Chuter is the Nigerian-born founder of makeup brand Uoma Beauty, a line of high-impact, pigment-dense face, eye and lip products (think eyeshadow palettes featuring vibrant metallics and jewel tones and luxe skin-blurring finishing powders) inspired by Africa’s rich cultural diversity. The brand also pays homage to culturally influential female icons like Sade and Cleopatra via product names and campaign imagery.

Chuter has been a natural outspoken leader for as long as she can remember. For example, she was the brains behind 2021’s viral Pull Up for Change campaign, which encouraged companies to reveal how many Black employees and employees of colour they had on staff, especially in leadership positions. “My mom quickly realized that I wasn’t going to live a conventional life; I wasn’t ‘Nigerian wife’ material,” she laughs. “Where I’m from, you’re supposed to be polite and not too outspoken. And you’re supposed to get married. I said: ‘Screw it! I’m going to focus on other things.’”

A post shared by UOMA Beauty (@uomabeauty)

So, after working in a variety of industries — including pharmaceuticals, music and the corporate side of beauty as an LVMH executive — Chuter launched Uoma (which means “beautiful” in Igbo, the native language in southeastern Nigeria, and is pronounced “oma”) in 2019. She did so with an ambitious 51 shades of foundation straight away — not because she had to answer to anyone or appease investors but because she believed it was what consumers needed. “I didn’t have any restrictions, and I hadn’t dealt with any big conglomerates, which meant I could bring a new voice into the conversation.”

Chuter says that others suggested she came out with an impressive shade range simply because of Rihanna and the now-famous launch of Fenty Beauty’s 40 shades of foundation in 2017. (Many other brands did just that, and the trend was dubbed the “Fenty Effect.”) “They’d say ‘Fifty-one shades? Because of Fenty?’ No! Fenty was an anomaly. It was the power of Rihanna — who, by the way, is the queen of all queens,” Chuter is quick to clarify. “It was a combination of a huge celebrity and a company with a massive infrastructure. You can’t replicate that story.”

To Chuter, inclusivity is common sense. She says that brands that still haven’t even entered the shade-range conversation (or have done so thoughtlessly and purely for optics, producing poorly developed darker shades) are blinded by short-term thinking that will inevitably be their downfall. “The brands that aren’t allocating resources to developing wider ranges because they say America is 75 per cent white are forgetting that by 2045 that number is going to be 49 per cent,” she says. “The face of America is changing. Over time, people of colour are going to be the majority of the population, so you have to start perfecting your formulas now if you want your business to survive.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by UOMA Beauty (@uomabeauty)

So, what does thoughtful makeup formulation look like? “Thirty-one of Uoma Beauty’s 51 shades are for darker skin tones because our undertones are so nuanced,” says Chuter. Uoma Beauty’s Say What?! foundation is available in six custom formulas, to best suit different skin tones, and multiple shade options for cool, neutral and warm undertones.

Refreshingly, Chuter is also eager to address additional facets of inclusivity that many other brands don’t — or won’t — acknowledge. “Inclusivity is about so much more than just shades,” she says. “Yes, beauty comes in every colour, but it also comes in every budget and every lifestyle. And a lot of the marginalized groups who have been left out of the beauty conversation have also been left out economically. Are there marginalized people who are very wealthy? Sure. But are the majority of marginalized people very wealthy? No. To ignore that fact is delusional.”

That’s why, in 2021, Chuter launched Uoma Beauty’s more affordable sister line, Uoma by Sharon C. Uoma Beauty, which is available at Shoppers Drug Mart, falls in the mid-price range (think $21 for a lip liner and $56 for an eyeshadow palette), while everything from Uoma by Sharon C, which is carried at Walmart, is in the $6 to $30 range.

A post shared by UOMA by Sharon C (@uomabysharonc)

Chuter’s willingness to have these complex and nuanced conversations is what sets her apart in an industry that is more saturated than ever. Just don’t call her a rule-breaker. “The difference between a rule-breaker and a disrupter is that the latter is constructively dissatisfied with the status quo. They offer solutions. Rule-breakers, on the other hand… Well, anyone can break anything,” she laughs.

Uoma Beauty has grown rapidly since its 2019 launch, but Chuter says that brand success isn’t what she’s chasing. “It’s much better to have your mission intact, even if you don’t survive. After all, most of the activists who changed the world didn’t see that change happen in their lifetime.” As for her legacy, Chuter wants to be known for action: “I saw a problem and was brave enough to raise my hand and offer a solution, whether it was right or wrong. I tried to fix it. That’s what I want my legacy to be: the girl who tried.”

Below are Sharon Chuter’s tried-and-true makeup and skincare essentials.

“When I created the Rare Impact Fund [in 2020], I knew it was something I had to give my full heart to,” says Selena Gomez over a video call. She’s calling to chat about the launch of the Make a Rare Impact campaign, which officially launches today. The campaign is a partnership between Gomez’s Rare Beauty and Sephora, wherein Sephora will donate 100 per cent of Rare Beauty product sales on October 10, World Mental Health Day, to the Rare Impact Fund. “I always wanted to be a woman of my word.”

The Rare Impact Fund’s mission is to reduce the stigma associated with mental health and increase access to mental health services and education for young people globally. “The mental health crisis is one of the most serious issues facing young people today,” says Gomez. “This work would not be possible without the support of partners, like Sephora, who not only believe in this mission, but donate crucial funds to expand mental health resources to young people around the world.” 100 per cent of proceeds of Rare Beauty products sold at Sephora locations in 28 countries around the world, including Canada, Australia, the U.S. and the U.K.

Rare Beauty is so much bigger than a makeup brand,” says Gomez. Aside from changing the lives of young people around the world with the Rare Impact Fund (which the brand donates one per cent of product sales to, all year-round), Gomez says launching Rare Beauty three years ago has improved her own relationship with beauty, too. “My relationship with beauty is constantly evolving,” explains Gomez. “I’ve been learning to not put how I’m feeling physically first. Because there are days when I wake up and don’t feel the prettiest. It’s a daily struggle but I try to [remember that] what makes me happy and what makes me beautiful is being who I am.”

Gomez has long been open about her own mental health struggles and she says founding Rare Beauty and watching its impact grow has been integral to her own growth and healing. “Hearing other people’s stories [through Rare Beauty and the Rare Impact Fund] has helped me heal in my own life. It’s been pretty life-changing.” Though, she’s quick to point out, “there was never an ulterior motive. I really just wanted people to feel seen.”

If you’ve ever browsed the Rare Beauty section at Sephora (online or IRL), you’ve probably noticed the brand’s uplifting product names. An under-eye brightener called Positive Light. A bronzer stick called Warm Wishes. A lip liner named Kind Words. These little details add up to make a big impact on the way Rare Beauty exists within an industry that hasn’t always had the warmest, most inviting, inclusive reputation. As it turns out, that’s exactly why Gomez says these names are so important.

“I have a 10-year-old sister and I get to overhear her saying ‘What about [the shade] Inspire or Hope?’ when her and her friends are playing with the makeup.” For those of us who grew up in a different era of the beauty industry, like Gomez herself, the positivity is a welcome change, indeed.

“I have a responsibility as an older sister to be the best [role model for her] that I can be.”

“When you’re trying to create history with something that already has historical ground, it can be intimidating,” says Charlize Theron over the phone. She’s calling from L.A. and reminiscing about joining the house of Dior almost 20 years ago as the face of its iconic J’adore Dior fragrance plus several of the perfume’s iterations. It’s hard to imagine the Academy Award-winning actor, producer and activist being intimidated by anything. She later confirms my suspicions, describing herself as fearless. “I’m rarely scared of doing something that requires me to step outside of my comfort zone,” she says.

However, when Theron first signed on to be the face of J’adore in 2004, the task at hand felt daunting. “The fragrance already had a commercial to its name, and it was really beautiful,” she says. “So part of me was like, ‘I guess I’m just showing up and continuing that.’” Theron was pleasantly surprised to find that the brand wasn’t interested in operating on cruise control. “It’s been nice to be surrounded by creative people who dare to be bold, and maybe even a little disruptive, at a house with so much history,” she says.

A post shared by Dior Beauty Official (@diorbeauty)

Today, Theron is the face of the latest addition to the Dior fragrance family, L’Or de J’adore. Francis Kurkdjian is the nose behind the scent — the perfumer’s first major fragrance for Dior since he was named perfume creation director. “J’adore’s floral bouquet is profuse and rich,” says Kurkdjian. “The dialogue it opens between the flowers is what gives it its unique signature. I wanted to define the J’adore flowers and maximize them.”

To do so, Kurkdjian simplified the original J’adore formula by “zooming in” on the flowers. “They became hyperbolic,” he explains. “Exaggerating the flowers infuses the fragrance with unprecedented opulence. I wanted a radical approach and an immediate floral sensation. The J’adore flowers grab you straight away, without waiting.”

The magic of L’Or de J’adore lies in its ability to pay homage to the original while simultaneously being audacious and daring in the quest for something new. “You can still find the cornerstones of the original J’adore in L’Or de J’adore, yet there are these brave moments when the florals are so concentrated,” says Theron. “It has changed in ways that don’t feel like you’re completely walking away from the thing you originally loved.”

Many of the most beautiful things in life are the result of being in exactly the right spot — a perfect alignment of external factors. The same can be said of Chanel’s open-sky laboratory in the small town of Gaujacq in southwest France, about an hour from Biarritz (the surfing capital of Europe and where Gabrielle Chanel opened her very first couture house in 1915). The over-40-hectare camellia farm and research laboratory is 54 kilometres from the ocean and 56 kilometres from mountains. “This makes it a unique climate,” says Jean Thoby, an internationally renowned camellia expert and our tour guide as we roam the rolling hills of Gaujacq. “The winds are almost non-existent, the land is deep and the springs are abundant.” The hot and humid weather (Gaujacq sees about 150 centimetres of rain each year, spread over the four seasons) is ideal for camellias because it’s similar to the flowers’ native growing grounds in Japan and China, where they thrive. “We don’t even have to water the plants because of the humidity,” says Thoby.

Thoby was born into the world of plants — his parents owned a nursery in Nantes, and he is a fifth-generation plant collector. But his passion for plants still feels fresh and new. (“Did you know that the direction in which tree branches grow depends on the position of the planets?” he asks excitedly as we wander through the fairy-tale-like garden of blooms.) In 1998, Thoby accepted an offer to partner with Chanel to study his impressive camellia collection. (Camellias were Gabrielle’s favourite flower, after all.) His father once declined a similar offer from Chanel, but Thoby agreed to invite the brand in, eager to learn more about his beloved camellias. “A recent study revealed that only 3 per cent of the world’s plants have been analyzed for economic purposes,” says Thoby. “But the more we study plants, the more uses we’ll find that can have impacts in a wide variety of fields, such as medicine, fashion and beauty. Botanical gardens contain treasures.”

Photography courtesy of Chanel

Indeed they do. The celebrated garden is bursting with over 2,000 varieties of camellias, and just steps from the farm and gardens is Chanel’s research laboratory, where a small team of experts study the flower and its properties during its harvest. “Our phytochemistry lab is located directly in the middle of the farm at Chanel’s open-sky lab,” says Nicola Fuzzati, the brand’s director of active ingredient research. “The flowers are picked and brought straight to the lab to be analyzed.” Fuzzati’s team studies the components of camellias, analyzes the differences between fresh and dried flowers, identifies the most promising sources of active ingredients and ensures that traceability and quality-control practices are followed. “Because of this proximity, we can verify if agricultural practices can influence the production of plants,” he explains. These findings are then communicated to Chanel’s research lab and incorporated into the brand’s product offerings. “Our presence on the ground and our scientific expertise give us a unique perspective on nature’s potential to serve beauty.”

Photography courtesy of Chanel

This includes findings about the rejuvenating properties of red camellia, which the brand has made the star of its N°1 de Chanel range, featuring a serum, a moisturizer, an eye cream and a powder-to-foam cleanser, all with skin-barrier-boosting properties. They are focused on sustainability; they are up to 97 per cent natural, and almost the entire camellia plant is used, including the petals and leaves, as well as the seeds, which are pressed to obtain oil. Even the external part of the seed (a shell-like outer layer) is used — it gets ground up and is incorporated into the lid of the glass products. Under the direction of Philippe Grandry, Chanel’s crop operations manager in Gaujacq, the farm is dedicated to cultivating camellias in a way that respects biodiversity and maintains the natural ecosystem.

Photography courtesy of Chanel

It’s no secret that the merging of science and nature can yield stunning results, and Chanel’s open-sky laboratory is the manifestation of the two worlds coming together. Where else can you find a research lab (microscopes, petri dishes, lab coats) nestled among fields of farmland bursting with blooms and a magical, world-famous garden just steps away? “We’re opening a new, still rare form of dialogue between scientists and growers,” says Thoby. “Because plants are the future of humankind.”

If quiet luxury is all about refined minimalism and elevated yet understated basics, perhaps no place holds more stealth wealth gems than your bathroom. The most intimate and private room of your abode is likely home to your most frequently used, holy grail beauty, grooming and personal care products. And just like a nondescript black baseball cap or a well-tailored suit, these items can say a lot about you. (Quietly, of course.)

RELATED: Succession Has Mastered the Art of Quiet Luxury

In fact, interest in personal care products is at an all-time high. While the pandemic was a major blow to makeup sales, other beauty categories — like oral care, skincare and hand soap — saw significant growth. At the time, the reasoning for this growth was clear (hello, we were stuck at home with nothing to do but wash our hands all day long), but in today’s post-pandemic world, the personal care category’s continued success is more surprising. Just this past April, L’Oréal Group acquired the king of chic hand soap, Aesop, in a massive deal that valued the skin- and body-care brand at a staggering $2.5 billion.

And it’s not just sales figures. Culturally, soap et al. are having a bit of a moment, too. Take, for example, the popular TikTok trend where creators sneak into their dates’ bathroom cabinets to rate (and read into) the type of soap, personal care, hair and body products they find. Too high-end and he might have a girlfriend. Too many run-of-the-mill products and he may not be into self-care. Hardly any personal care products at all? Run. (It’s a fine line.)

But wait — when did Gen Z become such hand soap and toothpaste connoisseurs? The newfound obsession could have something to do with the fact that we’re in the age of GRWM videos and the contents of creators’ bathrooms are constantly on display. Who wouldn’t want to show off a recently acquired taste for chic hand soap? Maybe it’s the Sofia Richie Grainge glow-up effect. Or perhaps we’re all longing to recreate what we imagine Shiv Roy‘s brushing, flossing and hand-washing routine to be.

What we know for sure is that when it comes to true stealth wealth, no other category does it quite as quietly as chic hand soap (and its close cousins, elevated oral care and luxe bathroom spray). These items are tucked away in your bathroom, never being seen by the outside world. And yet you know they’re waiting, in understated packaging, to greet you each evening to help you strip away the remnants of a long day with a wash, brush, floss and a spritz.

Perhaps quiet luxury lies not in GRWM videos, but in the get un-ready with me process when all is said and done.

Music stadium tours are known for being many things. (Think intense, physically demanding and long.) An opportunity for makeup experimentation and complex beauty looks? Not so much — unless you’re Alexx Mayo, that is. The makeup artist has been working with singer and rapper Lizzo for the past six years, and during that time, he has created countless show-stopping looks that have solidified him as one of the most impressive celebrity makeup artists working today. At the end of July, Mayo completed a 10-month-long run of doing Grammy Award winner Lizzo’s makeup for The Special Tour, which was in support of her album Special.

RELATED: Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour Beauty Looks Are Pure Perfection

“Somebody recently told me that they can’t think of another artist who has changed their look on tour as much as Lizzo has,” says Mayo over the phone. “I thought of icons like Madonna, Janet and Cher, and I realized it’s true. They each have a look that’s specifically designed for a tour, and it’s very consistent. You know what the look is going to be every night.” Mayo, on the other hand, comes up with Lizzo’s varied makeup looks on the morning of each show. And we’re not talking about deciding between winged eyeliner and a smoky eye. Lizzo’s The Special Tour makeup has included multicoloured polka dots rising up to her forehead, neon negative-space eyeliner and a graphic cat-eye topped with glued-on black stars. “I was wrapping a gift for someone and had extra confetti stars from the craft store,” says Mayo of the celestial look. “I thought they could be useful.”

It’s not that Mayo intentionally avoids repeating makeup looks — “it’s just organic, in-the-moment creativity,” he says. His star client’s unwavering confidence helps, too. “There’s no mirror in front of Lizzo while I work,” says Mayo. “So she has no idea what she looks like during the process, but she has the confidence to know that she can rock anything. I think that that attitude helps everyone on the team, too.” While the vibe in the makeup room is free-flowing and creative, both Mayo and Lizzo have just one non-negotiable: Each look has to be finished with false lashes. Mayo relies on Ardell’s vast selection of lash styles to help execute his artistic vision each night. “I just love the glitz and glam of false lashes,” says Mayo. “They help Lizzo emote when she’s performing.”

Mayo started wearing makeup himself at age 14, around the same time he came out as gay, but he certainly wasn’t donning the vibrant looks he’s known for creating today. “I hung out with the punk and goth kids,” says Mayo. “We were all really misunderstood, and makeup was my way of expressing my sadness and anger. I thought that wearing dark eyeliner and eyeshadow would make people back off from me and my sexuality — and it worked.” So how does one go from being a misunderstood goth kid in Los Lunas, N.M., to the go-to celebrity makeup artist for bright, vibrant looks? “It’s the music,” he says. “The makeup is what Lizzo’s music sounds like to me. It’s colourful, it’s rainbows, it’s glitter. It’s just happy.”

“It’s OK; September is always pretty warm, too!”

This phrase has been on the tip of my tongue, making a near-constant appearance lately, as August approaches its end. It’s my immediate, automatic response to any mention of summer being “almost over” (horrible) or crisp autumn days being “just around the corner” (cruel and unnecessary). No longer able to hide the sheer desperation in my voice, which reveals itself through hurried sentences and shaky optimism, I unconvincingly declare that we have plenty of warm days to look forward to.

RELATED: Pistachio Perfumes Are This Summer’s Most Unexpected Fragrance Trend

In case this proves to be untrue, there is still one other foolproof method to holding onto—and, dare I say it, even extending—the final moments of the season. Enter: coconut perfume. You know, the fragrances that smell like the best parts of summer: fresh coconut water, sunscreen at the pool, an overflowing piña colada dripping down your hand as you carry your drink back to your sandy beach towel.

These scents take us back to lazy days spent lounging on sunny shores, the hypnotizing sound of waves lulling us into a midday nap, and the feeling of warm sand beneath our toes. Perfectly summery, coconut-y perfumes are a delicate balance between sunscreen’s familiarity and the creamy sweetness of coconut, the crisp tang of salty sea air, and the subtle hints of warm, sun-drenched skin. For summer-lovers, there is will never be an olfactory experience quite as evocative as a day spent at the beach.

Prepare to drown out any claims of summer being “over” with a spritz or two of our favourite coconut-y, sunscreen-y, beachy fragrances, which you can shop below.

“Aging can be frustrating and intimidating,” says Dr. Patricia Ogilvie, scientist, dermatologist and founder of Munich’s Skin Concept. “It also happens to be fascinating from a scientific standpoint.” Ogilvie was one of a handful of globally renowned skincare and scientific research experts in attendance at a conference hosted by Dior in the south of France to present the brand’s newest launch, Dior Prestige Le Nectar Premier.

RELATED: Dior Debuts a Dreamy Spa at Hôtel Du Cap-Eden-Roc + More Beauty News

The breakthrough formula is a massive undertaking, not only because it’s the brand’s first serum that’s able to address all three visible dimensions of skin aging (volume loss, texture changes and discoloration) but because it’s backed by research conducted by Dior’s Reverse Aging board, which includes experts in the fields of dermatology, life sciences and even psychology. In a recent 5,000-person study about age perception, Dior Science found that 80 per cent of men and women aged 18 to 80 fully accept their age. Better yet, 95 per cent of participants said they feel younger than they are. “This speaks to the progress that science and medicine have made,” says Ogilvie.

Even so, 97 per cent of participants revealed that if given the opportunity, they would choose to be — not just look — younger. Ogilvie says this is due to a growing discrepancy between chronological age (how old you are) and biological age (how old your cells are), especially for women. “As a dermatologist, I meet women every day who feel younger than the generations before them did at their age,” she says. These patients have enjoyed great accomplishments and excelled in their careers but tell Ogilvie that they don’t necessarily see this vitality being reflected in their appearance. “Reverse aging, from my perspective, means closing the gap between how we feel and how we look,” says Ogilvie. “Bringing these two elements closer together is empowering.”

Le Nectar Premier is able to stop senescence before it happens, reverting skin to a past version of itself.

Of course, there are two main ways to target — and reverse — signs of aging: injectables and skincare products. In the latter category, Le Nectar Premier specifically targets senescent cells, a relatively recent discovery of cells that are not quite young (that is, dividing and constantly creating new cells) or old (and thus discarded by the body). They exist in a problematic in-between state that speeds up skin’s aging process. “Cellular senescence is an irreversible state in which cells stop performing major functions,” says Dr. Laure Crabbe-Vert, a scientific coordinator at LVMH Recherche. The stressor at the root of senescence is glyoxal, which can be found in food, drinks, pollution and textiles. “It triggers skin cells to release certain molecules, forming an age signal network,” says Crabbe-Vert. “This molecular pathway spreads the message of aging to surrounding cells and amplifies the impact of senescence.”

Le Nectar Premier is able to stop senescence before it happens, reverting skin to a past version of itself. “After a month of use, it’s like the fine lines of the past seven years never existed,” says Virginie Couturaud, Dior’s scientific communications director.

So, what’s the difference between an anti-aging product and a reverse-aging product? “I’ve never liked the term ‘anti-aging,’” says Ogilvie. “It’s a resistance to something that’s inevitable. And it doesn’t fully encompass the opportunities that science provides us with today. By reprogramming the aging process of cells, we can actually make them behave younger. Reverse aging helps people live the period of their life in which they felt the best, for longer.”

It is true, after all, that the skincare industry would cease to exist — let alone grow and expand at its current astonishing rate — if its results were merely skin deep. “When we improve the surface, it goes way beyond the surface,” says Ogilvie. “It has a deep psychological impact.”

As Hailey Bieber’s face pops onto my screen at the beginning of our Zoom call, I find myself going through a mental checklist of the details that make up her signature beauty look. Bare eyes? Check. Glowing skin? Check. Brown bob slicked down into a middle part? Check. Almond-shaped nails and ultra-glossy lips? Check and check. She has nailed the “model off duty” look. The 26-year-old model-turned-brand founder (and former FASHION cover star) is nine months into the launch of her brand Rhode Skin, her first foray into skincare. With a waitlist of over one million across its products (of which there are only a handful), it’s safe to say that the brand has, by all accounts, been a smashing success. Today, Rhode begins shipping to Canada, its first expansion outside of the U.S. market.

RELATED: Hailey Bieber Says It’s Time to Make the Hair Change You’ve Been Considering

Proving that her commitment to minimalism is more than just an aesthetic choice, Bieber launched Rhode with only three products (five, if you count all three flavours of the Peptide Lip Treatment: Salted Caramel, Watermelon Slice and Unscented). “The beauty industry is very crowded,” says Bieber. “There are so many amazing brands [out there]. I wanted Rhode to be a brand that could put out that one really good moisturizer or that one really good lip treatment. We’re also conscious of not putting excess into the environment. These are things that are topics of conversation every single time we meet about a new product.”

Plus, through her years in the modelling industry, Bieber has learned the hard way that less is definitely more when it comes to skincare. “When your skin barrier is healthy and happy, your skin is healthy. But so many things can disturb your barrier, like travelling, the environment, and using harsh products. When I was a teenager, if I was having any sort of breakout, I thought throwing salicylic acid on it would fix it. You just want to get rid of it so you try to burn it off.” (Teen celebrities: they’re just like us.) “That’s why Rhode is so focused on hydration and a [healthy] barrier,” says Bieber.

Photography by Stevie Dance

Rhode Skin launched with a Peptide Glazing Fluid ($44), an instantly plumping and hydrating gel serum, Barrier Restore Cream ($44), a barrier-supporting cream moisturizer, and three Lip Peptide Treatments ($24 each). The entire lineup can also be purchased via The Rhode Kit ($142). “The idea behind the launch was, ‘What are the three things I couldn’t survive a flight without?” Bieber explains. “Or if I was stranded on a desert island and could only have three things with me, what would they be? That was the mentality for me.”

The clean, ultra-minimal look that Hailey Bieber has become known for is Rhode’s aesthetic as well, right down to the brand’s muted grey and white packaging. “My technical title at the brand is founder and creative director,” says Bieber. “Coming from the fashion industry, I’m obsessed with imagery, so things like [packaging and branding] took a lot of time because I’m so specific about the little details.”

So what’s Rhode’s secret to standing out in the ever-so-saturated beauty industry? “I feel like I’m in sync with my audience,” says Bieber. “Most of the products that are being developed or are in the pipeline for the next couple years are what people are asking for [right now]. So I’m like, ‘We must be in a good place.’ It makes me really happy because that’s such a big part of creating a brand for people who look to you for your style, or your skincare routine, or your aesthetic.”

So what’s next for the ultra-minimalist brand? Growth and expansion, of course — into new markets (Rhode launched in the United Kingdom this past spring) and new categories. The brand’s latest launch is Glazing Milk ($44), a silky ceramide-rich facial essence that boosts barrier function and leaves skin hydrated and glowy. But don’t expect a sudden explosion of product offerings from Rhode. “I think a 10-step routine is unnecessary,” says Bieber. “But that’s just me.”

Below, Hailey Bieber shares her tried-and-true beauty essentials.

This is Texture Talk, our long-running column that deep dives into the dynamic world of curly hair, from crowns of curls that are free flowing to strands that are tucked away in a protective style.

The origin story of Carol’s Daughter is a common one within the beauty industry: The brand started in its founder’s kitchen. But what began as a few DIY body butters sold at Lisa Price’s church market (thanks to the encouragement of her mother, Carol) has become one of the hair-care industry’s biggest success stories. In fact, the brand went on to become one of the first Black-owned product lines to have a flagship store and was even featured in the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. This year, Carol’s Daughter, which recently landed in Canada, turns 30 and remains a staple for anyone with textured hair. But that was never the plan. “I just wanted to make a connection with people and help them understand how to take care of their hair,” says Price. “I never wanted people to feel like my hand was in their pocket.”

RELATED: Why Black Beauty Supply Stores Will Forever Be Sacred Spaces

As a Black woman coming of age in the ’70s and ’80s, Price says she was lucky to have grown up learning about hair health and hearing the women in her family speak fondly about their own hair, giving her permission to do the same. “My mother, aunts and grandmother did not talk about hair in a negative way,” says Price. “I didn’t grow up thinking ‘The straighter my hair, the better I am.’ Thank God.” Price says her mother (the inspiration behind the brand’s name) “didn’t like anything that made you look like someone you weren’t.”

This strong sense of self allowed Price to stay focused through the early stages of launching Carol’s Daughter. The brand’s rise to success was somewhat of a slow burn; it launched in 1993 and steadily gained traction in the industry. But Price says it wasn’t until 2001 — eight years into the business — that she was financially stable enough to take out a loan. And even then, she was prevented from doing so at her neighbourhood bank — a decision she feels was racially motivated. “There was a question about whether or not the money I’d be bringing in would be legitimate,” she says. “I had to prove I wasn’t a criminal.” Today, Price says there’s still much work to be done, but she’s thrilled to see more representation and Black brand founders in the industry. “At least now, retailers are aware that there should be more diversity,” she says. “Before, it wasn’t even a conversation. You just figured stuff out on your own because you knew somebody was gonna say no to you.”

A post shared by Lisa Price (@iamlisaprice)

The turning point for Carol’s Daughter came in 2002, when Price appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, giving the brand a major boost (often referred to as “The Oprah Effect”). From there, the direct-to-consumer brand launched on HSN and then several years later in Target. In 2014, Carol’s Daughter was acquired by L’Oréal USA. Price stayed on as founder, overseeing product development, brand vision, education and more (a role she still holds today). While this milestone was a massive accomplishment for her and for the brand, she expected it would be received with slight pushback from consumers. “I anticipated concern,” she says. “I anticipated comments like ‘I hope the formulas don’t change.’” So she recorded a personal video announcement, explaining that the acquisition meant Carol’s Daughter would be in more stores and thus become even more accessible to customers. Unfortunately, the message went largely unheard. Instead, she was called a sellout; customers were angry that their beloved products were no longer going to be produced by a Black-owned brand. “I was surprised at how negative and visceral the reaction was,” says Price.

With time, she came to understand her customers’ frustrations. “I had to step back from the situation and look at it through the lens of the consumer,” she explains. “I realized it wasn’t about me. It was about our history. When we, as Black people, have trusted others with our things, they have stolen from us. I learned that my role is to mentor other entrepreneurs and cheer them on so this gets easier each time one of us does it.” Price’s ability to not only keep her cool in stressful situations but also lead the way as a pioneer in the industry has been instrumental in the decades-long success of Carol’s Daughter. However, her role as a leader didn’t come naturally to her. “I needed to sit at the head of the table, although it was uncomfortable and it wasn’t where an introvert wanted to sit,” she says. “But I had to learn how to lead — even if I didn’t know exactly where I was going.”

Carol’s Daughter has an extensive roster of A-list fans. Here, Price reflects on these pivotal meetings from years ago.

Jay-Z

“I met him in 2003; I always called him Mr. Carter, and he called me Mrs. Price. I’m not sure why. It’s just a thing we did. He was a fan of our now discontinued Ocean body-care line.”

Cassie

“She was part of a campaign we shot in 2011. What was revolutionary about Cassie’s ad was that she had recently shaved one side of her head. That was not a thing back then and certainly not in a hair campaign featuring a beautiful head of hair. I loved that about her.”

Halle Berry

“During the taping of The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2002, Oprah mentioned that she’d been gifted with Carol’s Daughter products by Halle Berry. I had no idea Halle knew about the brand, so I later sent her a gift basket as a thank you, and she sent me a thank-you note back. That made me melt.”

Oprah

“During that episode, Oprah said our foot cream was fantastic. At the time, we had a lotion and a foot butter. We didn’t know which one she meant so we put both on our website’s home page. After the episode, we sold a ton of foot products.”

Mary J. Blige

“Mary was a fan of our Almond Cookie Shea Soufflé. We worked together for a few years, creating and selling her fragrances. She also became an investor in 2006.”

Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith

“Jada was into self-care before that term was a thing. She and Will eventually became investors, but they had been using Carol’s Daughter products long before that. Years before we met, Will’s assistant actually called me once to ask about new launches and I heard Will’s voice in the background. I almost passed out.”

“I’ve been working since I was eight years old. I’ve just pushed through life,” says Sarah Jessica Parker over the phone. “I’ve had wonderful experiences and I’ve had hard experiences. And I didn’t want to focus on the things that were painful. I gave them the time they needed, but for me, being sad — or disappointed or frustrated or angry or bitter — just didn’t seem to move me forward.”

The And Just Like That… actor has partnered with RoC Skincare for the second year in a row on the #LookForwardProject in collaboration with non-profit organization SeekHer, which aims to bridge the gender gap of mental health in the U.S. through advocacy and research. The project’s mission is to support a more optimistic future via access to mental health advocacy and resources for teens and their parents. She’s also curated a limited edition skincare kit with the science-backed brand, with profits going to SeekHer.

The brand has shared some data about the role of optimism, especially as it impacts teens and their caregivers, finding that 69 per cent of moms are concerned their negativity about the future could impact their child’s outlook and 97 per cent of moms believe there should be more resources and support to ensure our children learn how to incorporate optimism into their lives. During our call, I realize that natural optimist Parker is the perfect person for the role.

“I think I’ve developed, through experience, a desire to carry on and move forward,” she says. “I try not to get too trapped in things that are painful. It’s not productive.” As for how her outlook impacts her parenting (Parker has three kids; son James, 20, and twin daughters Tabitha and Marion, 13), she says, “I want them to feel good about the things that are interesting to them. And I want them to feel excited about the future, even though the world is incredibly complicated and they will eventually be exposed to social media and all the landmines that exist there. I want them to find comfort in individuality.”

Parker says she has chosen to work with RoC Skincare again because the brand’s messaging “is about taking the focus off looks, and the idea of ‘aging.’ The focus is living and the optimism that can come with experience, time and perspective. What RoC really wants is for women to feel good when they leave their homes and feel like they’re like themselves, not like their neighbour, not like the other mothers at school drop-off, not like the other teachers. Like themselves.” As for her own perspective on aging, she says, “I really don’t think about it. And I don’t think that makes me evolved. I just don’t think it’s registered in a way that’s been dominant. I haven’t worked hard to not think about it. I just don’t think about it.”

I ask Parker if she partakes in any practices that help fuel her optimism, such as meditation or journaling. “Nope, nope, nope. None of that,” she laughs. “And I don’t do self-care days. I just pick myself up and get back to work. That’s the way I’ve always lived my life.”

Watermelon has always been synonymous with summer, thanks to the fact that it’s crazy-hydrating and refreshing (it is 92 percent water, after all) and, of course, because it’s delicious. The latter quality aside, the first clue that watermelon might make a great beauty product ingredient is simply the fact that our skin, like the rest of our body, needs hydration. But we don’t need to tell that to anyone who’s ever experienced a long, cold Canadian winter.

RELATED: Try These TikTok-Approved Self-Tanner Beauty Tricks

Beyond the hydration factor, watermelon is full of ingredients that can do wonders for your skin. Like citrulline, for example. It’s an amino acid that improves blood circulation and acts as a natural exfoliator. And lycopene, an anti-inflammatory, which means it can reduce puffiness and redness in your skin, as can vitamins C, A, and B6, all found in watermelon. And since watermelon is full of antioxidants, it can be used to protect your skin from free radicals and treat fine lines, which is why new watermelon beauty products continue to pop up on the shelves of beauty stores.

And it’s not just skin that can benefit from watermelon’s benefits. The fruit can actually have a plumping effect on hair, too, because of how hydrating it is.

The fruit has been used in natural remedies for ages (like rubbing watermelon rind onto inflamed skin to get its soothing properties), but one beauty product really reintroduced watermelon as a beauty hero. Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask, which became one of the most-hyped beauty products of 2017, selling out countless times at Sephora — including the day it launched. In fact, it became Sephora’s best-selling mask that year.

Not only has Glow Recipe released a series of watermelon products (including the brand’s first foray into body care), but plenty of other brands got the watermelon beauty memo. We’ve rounded up our faves below.

Quick: What’s the chicest gelato flavour? Don’t overthink it.

Next question: Why is it pistachio?

As far as frozen dessert flavours go, pistachio is simultaneously elegant, warm and refined (think of childhood trips to the ice cream shop where you were baffled yet enchanted by your mom’s go-to, very sophisticated green order), while still bursting with excitement and energy. Who could forget that first girls’ trip to Italy in your early twenties when you finally came to understand pistachio gelato’s allure after a long day spent in the sand and sun?

And the earthy, understated nut is currently having a major moment. It may be the summer of dressing like a tomato girl, but it’s definitely the summer of smelling like a pistachio.

Back in 2021, the husband and wife duo-founded boutique fragrance brand D.S. & Durga launched their simply titled eau de parfum, Pistachio. It was a limited edition launch (like, very limited — only 100 bottles were produced) as part of the brand’s Studio Juice collection. It sold out in just a few hours. “I think pistachio is an elegant nut. Also a fun nut,” writes D.S. & Durga perfumer and cofounder, David Seth Moltz, on the brand’s site. “It’s around good climes and everyone seems to dig it. We made this on a whim; a fragrance with no story that just evokes the fun of pistachio (especially as a dessert flavour).”

Indeed, if you’ve ever had baklava or kulfi, two other pistachio-centric desserts, then you’re familiar with its nutty, sweet-but-not-too-sweet flavour profile. And snacking on pistachios themselves? Forget about just having one. As a snack, pistachios are creamy and addictive. The nut has lightheartedness and breezy summer days basically written into its DNA. Pistachio perfumes, as many fragrances are wont to do, also evoke memories of travel. The culinary nut is cultivated in, and a staple of, countries like Iran, Greece, Italy and Afghanistan. And just like the traditional dishes it frequents, pistachio fragrances are delicate, thoughtful and graceful — foregoing the in-your-face sweetness of many other gourmand perfumes that lean heavily into sugary, confectionary territory.

Striking a perfect balance between familiarity and novelty, pistachio’s magic lies in its ability to transcend time and space, transporting us back to cherished moments of our past with ease. As is often the case with fragrances, nostalgia reveals itself as the cupid’s arrow behind yet another dizzying, intoxicating love story about the scents we fall for.

So: Tomato, tom-ah-to. Pistachio, pis-tah-chio. Finding your summer aesthetic or your summer scent involves little more than surrendering to sticky heat, carefree afternoons and youthful indulgence.
