We’ve all heard of the mob wife aesthetic, but these London street style Fall 2024 looks are giving British mob wife.

In case you’ve been on an Internet cleanse/living in the Witness Protection Program, the mob wife aesthetic can be characterized by Edie Falco’s Carmela Soprano: Giant fur coats are a must; animal print is considered a neutral and the higher the heels, the better.

In contrast, the British mob wife is more refined than rugged. These mobsters are professionals first, murderers second. Just because their work is messy doesn’t mean they need to be. Picture if Guy Ritchie did The Sopranos: Luxurious furs are accessorized with mod Mary Janes; white button-ups and ties are paired with leopard print and jewellery is kept to a minimum.

If Peaky Blinders isn’t quite your fashion forte, plaid and tartan are always mainstays at London Fashion Week. The cool weather also didn’t stop many street style stars from sporting short shorts and mini skirts. And of course, oversized blazers continue to be the outerwear of choice.

Check out the gallery below for all of the fashionable London street style Fall 2024.

What do Carole Lombard, Kate Moss and Michael Kors’s grandmother all have in common? According to the namesake designer, they’re all timeless. For the Michael Kors Fall 2024 show, Kors was inspired by iconic women of the 1930s and ’90s and presented a profound study of classic staples. Bias cut slip dresses, tailored separates and luxurious knits all dominated the runway and collectively painted a picture of a woman whose wardrobe will never go out of style.

“One of my hallmarks has always been fashion that stands the test of time,” says Kors in a press release. “And when we talk about what’s timeless and what endures—it’s quality, it’s simplicity, it’s sophistication, it’s clothes that make you feel confident and powerful.” Mission accomplished.

Zendaya is one of the 2024 Met Gala co-chairs

Zendaya is finally one of the Met Gala co-chairs and to quote Lizzo, it’s about damn time. Also helping Anna Wintour plan the fashion event of the season? Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth. This year’s exhibition is vaguely titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” and promises to display garments that are so fragile they’ve rarely seen the light of day (*cough* Kim K). As to the red carpet theme, Mrs. Wintour teased it’ll be themed around “The Garden of Time,” which translates to “melancholic and moody florals.” Apparently, florals are now groundbreaking.

Louis Vuitton’s Nicolas Ghesquière becomes a YouTube host

To celebrate 10-years of Nicolas Ghesquière as the Artistic Director of women’s collections, Louis Vuitton is launching the YouTube series, “Nicolas Ghesquière: Shaping Fashion.” Each 10-minute episode will feature the visionary designer chatting with an exclusive guest (think house ambassadors!) about everything from film to music to fashion, sprinkled with personal anecdotes.

“This series was something completely new for me. It was very enjoyable to take the time to look back, reflect and smile on how these past ten years have flown by… and it is a journey that has been shaped by the wonderful friends in each episode! With the pace of things today, it feels special to sit down and reminisce a little,” says Ghesquière in a press release.

Canadian brand Wynn launches a denim capsule collection

Mark our words, Wynn is a brand worth watching. Created by CAFA NewGen honouree, Lynne Weare, this Canadian label offers gender fluid, high-end, elevated basics that prioritize comfort. While in the past this has translated to mesh undies and dresses, Wynn has just launched a capsule collection made entirely from deadstock denim. Shoppable items include a wrap belt, buckle skirt and chaps, but our favourite piece has to be this crop top above.

Alexander McQueen teases a return to its roots

Michael Kors Fall 2024

Ahead of Seán McGirr’s debut collection for Alexander McQueen, the iconic British brand has released a few teasers of what to expect and there’s a lot to talk about. First — the logo! The house is dropping “Alexander” and reverting back to the original “McQueen” motif, with the C placed inside the Q.

Also, the images hint that something wicked this way comes. Stationed in a forest, models are sporting silver skull masks and tartan from the namesake designer’s highly controversial Fall 1995 “Highland Rape” collection. Will McQueen go back to its dark roots? Will we see a more odes to the ’90s? We’ll have to wait until March 2nd for the full reveal.

If you live in downtown Toronto, chances are you’ve spotted Maria Jurewicz on her daily commute. “I’m not a normal person walking around the city,” she jokes. But perhaps it just depends on your definition of normal. For Jurewicz, a strategic planning director at an advertising agency, a typical ensemble usually involves a vibrant bow-adorned coat, a campy novelty bag and a matching set of jewellery — mere hints of her massive Kate Spade collection. “I stopped counting at 500.”

Born in Ottawa and raised in Florida, Jurewicz grew up in a design-oriented household. While both of her parents are architects, she credits her mom with introducing her to the wonderful world of fashion. “She always made an effort to dress me up,” shares Jurewicz.

Throughout school, Jurewicz took great delight in colour-coordinating her outfits and matching her backpack, lunch box and even agenda to her clothing of choice. But her true Elle Woods moment came when she returned to Ontario to attend Queen’s University. “When I moved back to Canada, I remember thinking ‘This isn’t how people dress here — I have to try to blend in,’” she recalls. “But then there was a pivotal moment when I realized that wearing muted colours doesn’t make me happy. It isn’t who I am, and I’m OK with that.”

Enter the Kate Spade collection/obsession. Jurewicz began a years-long love affair with the brand before eventually getting a part-time job at a retail location, which she held for nearly six years. “I love that it’s joyful and unapologetically feminine,” Jurewicz begins. “The brand commits wholeheartedly to whimsy, but it’s still grounded in classic silhouettes, which is so me.”

Jurewicz describes her style as “’50s-ad woman meets Floridian retiree”; her apartment and collection look as if The Golden Girls and Mad Men had a crossover episode. Strands of pearls are organized in vintage chip-and-dip serving trays. Fruit-inspired novelty bags sit atop wicker shelves. And almost every item in the small space is colour-coordinated, including wallpaper, kitchen utensils, bathroom accessories, garment bags and shoe boxes — all (for the most part) by Kate Spade.

“I just ate up anything the brand created,” she explains, naming the ad campaigns, books and accessories of the 2000s and early 2010s. “As a marketing student, I was in awe of how it curated this all-encompassing lifestyle, and I treated it as a litmus test of what I would find interesting.” As such, she credits Kate Spade with influencing a lot of different areas of her life: her career in advertising, her love of “fashionable women with substance,” like Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy Onassis, and her newly formed Poshmark addiction (though most of her pieces are still bought through the brand itself).

But it’s the “polished, bright and sometimes cheeky” feeling Jurewicz gets whenever she wears one of her hundreds of pieces that keeps her coming back for more. She recalls a recent exchange she had in her local coffee shop, where a stranger stopped to share how much she enjoys seeing Jurewicz’s bright outfits every morning. “I dress for myself and to make myself happy, but it’s also really lovely when I brighten up someone’s commute,” says the collector. Suffice it to say, she definitely brings cheer — in spades.

ICYMI,  the Yeehaw Agenda is back and better than ever. After a short detour into #MobWifeWinter, cowboy chic is the moment. Model Bella Hadid hard-launched her IRL cowboy boyfriend, Kacey Musgraves is officially returning to her country roots with new music, and on Super Bowl Sunday, Beyoncé announced her next album Renaissance Act II, releasing two new country songs to herald this new era in her music career.

We shouldn’t be too surprised at this latest venture for Queen Bey. Fans of the singer have long been anticipating that the icon, who grew up in Texas, would someday return to her country roots with an album. Beyoncé has made nods to the genre in the past, releasing “Daddy Lessons” off her 2016 album Lemonade (and performing with The Chicks at the Country Music Awards the same year).

In 2022, the mogul leaned into her cowboy roots with her Ivy Park x Adidas campaign, celebrating Black cowboys and cowgirls. And even her Renaissance album and tour, which largely drew inspiration from Black dance music, included a nod to country style, with the singer donning disco cowboy hats and performing atop a horse onstage. As Time writer Taylor Crumpton noted in a recent article about her upcoming album, Beyoncé has always been country. The rest of the world is just catching up.

And, because this is Beyoncé, who never does anything half-assed, her country aesthetic is infiltrating not just her sound, but her wardrobe as well. Since the beginning of February, the singer has been donning cowboy hats, boots, and bolo ties, at first a hint (the singer loves a good Easter egg) and then confirmation that she’s more than just a little bit country.

Shortly after the announcement of her upcoming album, Beyoncé popped up at the 58th Super Bowl sporting an inarguably Texan look: A custom Dolce & Gabbana minidress with thigh-high boots, a turquoise bolo tie, and teased hair. The singer’s manicure even got in on the theme, with nail artist Miho Okawara giving the star a french tip featuring turquoise gemstones typically associated with western wear

On February 13, the singer made a New York Fashion Week appearance at Luar’s Fall 2024 show. While Bey was there to support her nephew’s modelling debut, all eyes were on the singer who donned a silver suit dress from Gaurav Gupta with matching embellished thigh-high boots, an iridescent Ana briefcase bag from Luar’s collection, and an oversized cowboy hat.

And on Valentine’s Day, Ms. Carter blessed us all with yet another sexy cowboy look, rocking a Dolce & Gabbana point d’esprit tulle gown with boning, a tulle veil and gloves, and a garter belt. And, of course, the singer wore a black cowboy hat.

Unlike the attire at your local rodeo, Beyoncé’s yeehaw aesthetic clearly has a formula: A minidress + thigh-high boots + lots of embellishment. It’s not only cute, but also easy to emulate — whether you have a designer or Amazon budget. Below, find some of the best picks for channeling your inner Beyoncé-approved cowgirl.

Turquoise ring

If there’s one thing that every cowboy-chic look needs, it’s turquoise. Turquoise anything and everything. Jewellery is a great place to start when it comes to incorporating this western-beloved stone into your look; pair a bunch of stackable rings with some necklaces or a bolo tie, and you’re good to go.

Shop Now

 Statement minidress

Like Beyoncé, we love a minidress. Versatile and wearable through all four seasons, the western wear trend means it’s the perfect opportunity to pull out old minidresses you have tucked away in your closet and repurpose them. The only criteria? That you feel fabulous in it.

Shop Now

Western shirt

For the days when you just want to throw on jeans and boots, a classic western shirt is a fab option. While this look may be less Beyoncé and more Bella Hadid off-duty, one thing that’s for sure is it’s cowboy as heck.

Shop Now

Cowgirl-approved belt

We love the power of a well-placed accessory, and when it comes to the western aesthetic, a belt is the best way to go. Amazon has affordable and super cute options for those who want to dip their toes into the trend without breaking the bank. (We don’t *all* have Beyoncé money, unfortunately.)

Shop Now

Cowboy boots

Arguably the most important part of any yeehaw-chic outfit: the boots. Cowboy boots have evolved within the world of fashion, and they can be as pared-down — or as chunky — as you want them to be. We’d recommend a sleek black pair with minimal silver hardware. Easy to wear and super versatile. Plus, they’ll stand the test of time *and* the yeehaw trend.

Shop Now

Cowboy hat

As much as we’d love to don an Orville Peck-style fringed cowboy hat or one bedazzled to the heavens, realistically it’s probably not what we’re going to turn to for the day-to-day or when planning a ’fit for drinks with your besties. In that case, it’s probably best to go with a hat that’s a statement, but won’t wear you. Go for something well-made and versatile, so you can pair it with jeans or a statement mini.

This article was originally published on November 9, 2023 and has been updated.

If the first Monday of May is basically your Super Bowl, we have some very exciting news for you. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute announced the theme of the Met Gala 2024: “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”

Naturally, social media immediately began speculating about what exactly this seemingly vague theme could represent — and if attendees will actually stick to the theme. Contrary to some people’s interpretations of the title, the 2024 gala isn’t about the classic Disney fairytale or Beyoncé’s “Cozy” Renaissance Tour costume.

So what does the “Sleeping Beauties” theme mean? Here are all the details on the Met Gala 2024 so far.

What is the Met Gala 2024 theme?

As always, the Met Gala will be a celebration of the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, which acts as the foundation for the fashion event’s dress code.

According to Vogue, approximately 250 pieces spanning over a 400-year history — including at least 15 archival items deemed too fragile ever to be worn again — will be on display during the exhibit’s run in New York City from May 10 to September 2, 2024. These exceptionally rare garments are the “sleeping beauties” of the Costume Institute’s collection.

With a focus on sustainability, the exhibit will be categorized into three zones: land, sea, and sky. Each of these will include garments comprised of materials that can be traced back to their respective category, with the aim of highlighting the relationship between fashion and the environment.

One example of the kinds of designs that the exhibit will showcase is the iconic 2011 Alexander McQueen butterfly dress which was part of former creative director Sarah Burton’s first collection for the fashion house. The hourglass dress is fully embellished with meticulously crafted artificial butterflies and is said to represent the promise of “transformative renewal.” It’s an exceptional piece that has rarely been worn beyond the runway, aside from when Elizabeth Banks donned it for her portrayal of the fashion-forward Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games.

A post shared by Vogue France (@voguefrance)

The collection will also consist of original pieces from designers such as Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent and Hubert de Givenchy — whose work will surely act as inspiration for the looks we’re bound to see at the annual gala.

On the importance of this year’s exhibit, Andrew Bolton, head curator of The Costume Institute, said, “Fashion is one of the most emotional artistic forms because of its connection to the body. It is imbued with memory and emotions, and we relate to it very much via our senses. One thing I hope this show will activate is that sensorial appreciation of fashion.”

When is the 2024 Met Gala?

The 2024 Met Gala will fall on Monday, May 6. As usual, it will be held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, with its star-studded red carpet taking place on the museum’s iconic front steps.

Who is attending the 2024 Met Gala?

The exclusive event’s guest list is never revealed before the gala, but we expect to see many familiar celebrity faces on next year’s red carpet. Several members of the Kardashian family typically attend the big night and fan favourites like Rihanna, Zendaya and Blake Lively often grace the museum’s steps as well.

In the months leading up to the big night, more information about who’s attending will likely be revealed.

Who are the 2024 Met Gala co-chairs?

On February 15, Vogue announced that Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez and Zendaya would form the official host committee along with Anna Wintour. Meanwhile, honorary chairs for the event are Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew. As Vogue notes, the co-chairs are a mix of longtime Met Gala guests (like J.Lo, who has attended a whopping 13 times) and first-timers (like Hemsworth, who has never been to the fashion event), along with Bad Bunny and Zendaya who have walked the Met Gala steps three and five times respectively.

What were past Met Gala themes?

The 2023 Met Gala was held in honour of late designer Karl Lagerfeld with the theme “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” Despite Lagerfeld’s controversial legacy, looks from the evening’s gala celebrated his decades of work at iconic fashion houses including Chanel, Fendi and Chloé.

Standouts from last year’s event included Dua Lipa, co-chair of the 2023 gala, who wore an elegant vintage Chanel tweed ballgown famously first worn by Claudia Schiffer on the runway in 1992. In addition to the variety of throwback Chanel and Chloé looks that graced the gala’s carpet, some stars opted for a more literal interpretation of Lagerfeld’s legacy. This included Doja Cat’s fully feline-inspired ensemble, which was meant to represent Lagerfeld’s beloved pet, Choupette.

The theme of the 2022 Met Gala was “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” which provided lots of “gilded glamour,” star-studded opulence.

Fashion fans will surely remember Kim Kardashian borrowing Marilyn Monroe’s famous “Happy Birthday Mr. President” dress for the evening and Blake Lively, who wore a transformative Statue of Liberty-inspired gown.

Between the years of history the annual gala holds and the exciting nature of this year’s theme, we’re sure that the 2023 Met Gala will be another big night for the fashion industry — and we’ll be keeping up with all the details until the first Monday in May 2024.

It’s Zendaya’s world and we’re all just living in it. And nowhere has that been more clear than on the red carpet. With the help of her longtime stylist Law Roach, Zendaya has become a fashion icon, often donning up-and-coming designers, and rocking silhouettes that few dare to try. But she always, always pulls them off. And the Zendaya Dune red carpet outfits we’re seeing on the press tour for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two that’s currently underway is no exception.

With a handful of looks under her belt already, it’s clear that the key is method dressing, with Z wearing outfits that could not only be straight out of Arrakis (the fictional desert planet on which the movie is set), but also emulate the look and feel of the post-apocalyptic planet itself. And to say we love it would be the understatement of the year.

Kicking off the tour in Mexico City on February 5, Zendaya stepped out in an asymmetrical look from emerging British designer Torishéju Dumi. A custom ensemble, based on the “Fire on the Mountain” look from the designer’s Spring 2024 collection, the two-piece set, in greys, black, navy and a vibrant red, seemed to be a direct nod to her character Chani and the Fremen she’s proudly a part of.

Photography by Getty Images

Fans of the film will know that the Fremen — the people indigenous to the planet of Arrakis — have a very specific aesthetic to them, wearing Stillsuits as a sort of armour that protects them from the elements. While Zendaya isn’t walking the Dune: Part Two red carpet in a literal recreation of the frankly very heavy looking Stillsuit, Dumi’s design gives the vibe of an updated Stillsuit, with the intricate wrapping, texture and padding mirroring that of a desert-friendly suit of armour. (It’s also low-key giving Sandworm vibes?! Sandworm, but make it fashion, that is.)

Just a day later, Zendaya walked the red carpet once again, this time in a structured brown wool ensemble from Bottega Veneta. While not a direct nod to her character in the structure or texture (we have a feeling wool would do terribly in the heat of Arrakis), it’s the hue of this custom look, iterated in an deep brown, that feels like a callback to the earth and sand that the fictional planet is so well-known for.

Photography by Getty Images

The Euphoria star wore two striking looks back to back on February 12 while promoting the film in Paris, France. The first, a futuristic white dress from Alaïa that looked a single piece of lush white fabric wrapping around her like a snake for a daytime photo call (above) and the second, a custom two-piece Louis Vuitton set comprised of a 3D rose jacquard sleeveless cropped hoodie with a matching pleated full skirt for the film’s Paris premiere (below).

Photography by Getty Images

The star took Valentine’s Day by storm in a layered maroon suit by Roksanda to attend a London photo call on February 14. Paired with a super long braid, the overall look was giving Arrakis royalty.

Then, most recently, Zendaya pulled out the mic drop of all Dune: Part Two outfits — an archival Mugler look from 1995 worn to the film’s world premiere in London on February that could be described as “robot chic.” Styled by Law Roach (who else?) in the silver cut-out catsuit, Zendaya looked like she travelled back from the future.

This type of thematic dressing may not feel like a big deal, but it kind of is. At its core, method dressing is when actors take aspects of a film — say, the plot, scenery, or characters — and translate them onto the red carpet. As FASHION writer Natalie Michie wrote in a May 2023 article about method dressing: “Simply put, it’s sartorial storytelling at its finest.”

In many ways, this type of dressing acts as further promo for the project that actors are walking the carpet for, but as Michie notes, it also acts as a high fashion and non-cheesy way to mark distinct eras in a celebrity’s career; creating standout sartorial moments fans can easily recall.

We’ve seen this tactic before. From Elle Fanning and Angelina Jolie’s promotion for Maleficent and Jenna Ortega’s commitment to black after her role in Netflix’s Wednesday, to Halle Bailey’s frothy, sea-like confections on the 2023 press tour for The Little Mermaid. And, do we even have to mention Margot Robbie and Barbie?

But probably one of the most identifiable was 2018’s A Simple Favor press tour, when lead Blake Lively leaned into the idea of method dressing hard, not only wiping her entire Instagram feed in anticipation of the press tour, but by promoting the movie wearing a parade of tailored men’s suits — and staple of her character Emily in the film.

A post shared by A Simple Favor (@asimplefavor)

The trend isn’t anything new for Zendaya and former FASHION cover star Roach, too, who have utilized the way of dressing many times throughout her career; most recently on the press tour for 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. Zendaya wore a custom Valentino gown with spiderweb embroidery and a superhero mask to the film’s premiere — to much acclaim.

Fashion has always been a way to have conversations beyond just clothes, and we love that Zendaya is using her time on the red carpet to have fun with her style and pay homage to her Dune character. Something tells us this is going to be an A+ press tour.

Naomi Campbell is known for being many things: supermodel, style icon, activist and, perhaps most amusingly, germophobe. Videos of her meticulously wiping down her airplane seat captivated social media followers in the summer of 2019 (well before the rest of us began doing the same thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic). But that’s Campbell; she’s unapologetically herself — much like the woman she’s targeting with the new Naomi x BOSS collab. This travel capsule is designed for go-getters like Campbell who are always on the move, conquering both their personal and professional domains with grace and style but also with ease — hence the use of luxurious but liberating fabrics like cashmere and cupro. “I want them to feel comfortable, like their clothing is an extension of their true selves,” Campbell explains. A grey pinstriped suit is cut from stretch-infused wool with a wrinkle-free finish, and an oversized leopard-print track suit comes in a technical jersey — perfect for curling up in a business-class pod.

The idea for the collab spun organically from Campbell’s photo shoot for BOSS’s Fall 2022 collection. “Moving beyond being a campaign face to co-creating a collection with BOSS has allowed me to explore a whole new facet of my art,” she notes. Here is more from Campbell on her Naomi x BOSS travel capsule.

What is the inspiration behind the collection?

“With the Naomi x BOSS collection, I wanted to craft a travel capsule that spoke to the spirit of today’s modern and dynamic women — a woman who’s strong, independent and always on the go.”

How does the collection reflect your personal style and taste?

“The Naomi x BOSS collection combines my personal style — which has been shaped by decades in the fashion industry — with something that has been a constant source of inspiration and growth for me: travel.”

What was the design process like between you and the BOSS design team?

“My involvement in the design process was very hands-on and collaborative, and I enjoyed working closely with the incredibly talented Marco Falcioni, senior vice-president of creative direction at HUGO BOSS, and the entire BOSS design team. It was like a well-oiled fashion machine. We started with brainstorming sessions where I shared my vision, ideas and personal style inspirations. It was about merging my style with BOSS’s impeccable craftsmanship and innovative spirit.”

What are the important qualities/features you wanted to include in the collection?

“Today’s woman has a million things on her plate, and the last thing she needs to worry about is her outfit, especially when on the go! We’ve incorporated technology into the fabric to make life a bit easier. Everyone knows I’m a bit of a germophobe, so of course we’ve added antibacterial properties to ensure freshness and cleanliness. There’s also an anti-crease feature, which means you move from one meeting to the next without worrying about wrinkles. Life can be rather demanding, and sometimes we all need a moment to de-stress. The track-suit set in the collection features a special print with proven anti-stress properties, promoting a sense of Zen and balance. In the end, we wanted to offer practicality without compromising on style, ensuring that every piece in the collection serves a purpose beyond just aesthetics.”

What is your favourite piece (or pieces) from the collection?

“Oh my, that’s like asking me to pick my favourite child. I love the entire collection. Each piece has its own unique charm, and together, they form a cohesive narrative of modern power dressing. But OK, if I had to pick, my favourite would be the compression suit. It hugs every curve, elongates the silhouette and exudes confidence. It’s a statement piece that’s perfect for those moments when you want to make an entrance and leave a lasting impression. The second would be the classic white button-down shirt. Now, this is an absolute wardrobe essential that every woman should have in her collection. It’s timeless, versatile and oozes effortless elegance. You can pair it with anything, dress it up or down, and it always looks impeccable.”

The collection features your personal mantra — dedication, determination and drive. Why are these three D’s so important to you?

“These three D’s have been my companions throughout my career, helping me navigate the ever-changing world of fashion and beyond. They’ve inspired me to break barriers, shatter ceilings and achieve things I never thought possible. So for me, these three words are not just a mantra; they’re a way of life, a philosophy that has guided me to where I am today, and I hope they can inspire others to pursue their passions with the same spirit.”

The colour purple appears as an accent, including jacket linings and the footbed of a flip-flop. Why did you choose this tone?

“Purple is associated with creativity and individuality as well as accepting oneself for who you are. It’s a colour that encourages self-expression and confidence, which aligns beautifully with the message we want to convey with the Naomi x BOSS collection.”

It’s my third time attending fashion week, and I still feel like an outsider. Don’t get me wrong — experiencing New York Fashion Week 2024 is one of the greatest privileges and joys of my job. But doing so, for me, comes with an unshakeable sense of imposter syndrome. So, I decided to document it.

Behold: A truthful account of what this iconic days-long event is actually like when you’re just a regular person.

The outfits may not slay

I love Cardi B‘s dedication to feathered frocks and Kylie Jenner’s rotation of form-fitting ’fits, but it could never be me. Every day, I’m hauling a computer bag instead of a dainty Sandy Liang purse. I rotate between lightweight ballet flats and durable Doc Martens, never once putting to use the vintage high-heeled boots I determinedly crammed into my suitcase. I’m not sporting Scandi-girl blowouts; my hair is routinely pulled back in a trustee rotation of stretchy headbands.

Deep down, as an editor, I know I do have a place here. But in an environment filled with bigwigs and glamorous nepo babies, it’s incredibly easy to feel insignificant. You have no choice but to wear it proudly! This brings me to my next point.

There are lists, lines and onlookers everywhere

Every now and again, you need to be humbled by the universe. And there’s nothing quite like the sobering sensation of walking into a show and seeing the surrounding street style photographers slowly lower their lenses and avert their eyes. Or the invisible (but very real) food chain ranking of being put in the “standing” section as opposed to having a seat at a fashion show.

More than once, I find myself reaching the front of the line, hoping to a higher power that I am in fact on the list. Each time I’m let through, I feel like I tricked the system.

Sometimes, before the shows start, there are hors d’oeuvres being offered. It might not be à la mode to indulge, but I don’t care. I am nothing if not a lover of little treats. Puffy braided breadsticks? Flavoured sparkling water? Don’t mind if I do!

The Anna Wintour effect is real

Somehow, seeing Anna Wintour throughout the week makes everything feel more momentous. I watch the infamous editor casually stroll into each venue — always sporting a flowy dress, a long trench and her signature perfect bob — and then slip out a back door as soon as the designer takes a bow.

IRL, I am stunned by the severe precision of her chin-length hair. “I heard she gets it trimmed every week so it always looks the exact same,” an editor tells me at the Proenza Schouler show. God, I love dramatic fashion lore.

Everyone is faking it till they make it

“Give us more!” photographers instruct an unnamed celebrity before the Coach show begins. The Upper East Side venue is luxurious, with a grand gilded staircase where said celeb is posing. He obeys, kicking up his legs and leaning his head back. My attention is briefly turned to the aforementioned Anna Wintour, who is walking up the other side of the stairs. I suddenly hear a thump, and turn back to see said celebrity has fallen down the steps (!) of this statement entryway. (Serving is dangerous work.)

To the crowd’s delight, he shakes it off and keeps posing. Wintour, now at the top of the spiral staircase, stops and turns to get a glimpse of this mishap. She smiles. This series of events, I realize, encapsulates the beauty of fashion week. You can make a fool of yourself in one moment, and go back to looking like you own the place the next. At New York Fashion Week 2024, it’s all in the mindset, honey.

There’s an art to approaching celebrities

A focus of my job here is trying to get famous people to talk to me. (Journalism!) And a big part of that is getting repeatedly rejected — or worse, being yelled at by an impossibly chic publicist. But just know, for every A-lister who says no, an enthusiastic It girl rendez-vous is right around the corner.

At the Michael Kors show, I see Katie Holmes walk in. She’s willowy and glowy and has kind eyes. I suddenly feel slightly inept in my stretchy slacks, but no matter. I start to ask her something and am swiftly shot down. “No questions,” a headset-wearing publicist politely says, ushering an apologetic-looking Holmes away. I guess we’ll never get the backstory on that look. Well played, Kate-o!

Then, I see the glamorous Gabrielle Union and ask her for her favourite fashion tip. “Not to take fashion tips,” she says, cool as a cucumber. Will I ever recover from posing such a dumb question? Watch this space. Blake Lively walks in, and everyone is clamouring for a glimpse of her. Wearing a giraffe print set, she looks just as stunning as you’d imagine.

Still riding that wave, I spot Rachel Zegler, who is a total delight and chats with me about her Valentine’s Day plans. I want to stop everything and ask her to hangout. But alas — duty calls!

Beware of dehydrated skin

At one high-profile presentation, I find my seat just before the show begins. While holding my phone up to videotape the models, I notice something truly horrendous. A cardinal sin to the ultra-dewy in-crowd of New York City fashionistas: dry hands!

Had I been so preoccupied with capturing content and squeezing on sanitizer that I completely neglected moisturizer? I can sense my seat-mates’ eyes on my shrivelled-looking paws — but there’s nothing I can do now. As soon as the show ends, I fish for the Vaseline on a Stick (nothing but the best) in my bag. Note to self: always hydrate your skin before entering a star-studded venue.

Appreciate the work that goes into it all

Amid all the adrenaline, it can be easy to forget the artistry at the root of the event. Earlier that week, I’d read about the steep expenses of being a designer in the city. It can reportedly cost up to $500,000 for one NYFW runway (and they’re often put on twice a year!). This comes up at one show when I’m seated next to two other Canadian editors. We begin to lament the loss of Toronto Fashion Week. It’s been almost 10 years since the fashion event was cancelled, due to lack of funding.

What does this loss say about the way we value fashion, or any creative industry, for that matter? Canadian-born success stories, like Tanya Taylor, have notably set up shop in NYC to make it in the cut-throat business. Moving through the week, this context makes me appreciate the intention of each show even more.

As media, I get backstage access for some presentations. I see how celebrity nail artist Gina Edwards crafts custom talons using Kiss press-ons for Prabal Gurung and Pat Bo. Behind the scenes at LaQuan Smith and Christian Siriano, I witness Unilever stylist Lacy Redway transform regular buns into gold-speckled updos and pencil-adorned creations. Even the smallest details have teams of professionals working to perfect them.

My takeaways

By the end of my time at New York Fashion Week 2024, I’ve attended 16 shows and backstages, and I am slightly disoriented. Poetically, the weather seems to be going rogue, too. “Advisory for your flight,” an ominous subject line from Air Canada pops up in my inbox the day before my departure. There’s a storm coming, the email teases, and your flight might be cancelled. At this point, I’m functioning on very little sleep and running out of socks. “Please, no,” I pray.

Luckily, it works out. As I settle into my seat on the scheduled plane late at night, I am struck with a feeling of lingering excitement. All in all, I am coming away from the week a little tougher — celebrity snubs will do that to you — a lot more inspired, and much less concerned about what others think.

But next time: double up on the moisturizer.

February is Black History Month. At FASHION, we celebrate diversity all year, but we’d like to take this opportunity to specifically highlight the talent of Black designers, who still face barriers to entrymarginalization and a lack of representation in the world of fashion.

It’s been more than three years since protests against policy brutality that escalated across the U.S. and around the world triggered change across many industries, including fashion. In May 2020, Aurora James founded the 15 Percent Pledge, calling on retailers to pledge 15 percent of shelf space to Black-owned businesses. A month after that, notable Canadian designer George Sully launched the platform Black Designers of Canada to feature and celebrate Black talent across the country.

And while we witnessed the overwhelming support of Black businesses at the height of the summer of 2020, our support must extend beyond a movement (or a month, for that matter). You’re probably familiar with a few of Canada’s renowned fashion figures, such as Kirk Pickersgill of Greta Constantine or Aurora James of Brother Vellies, but there are a myriad of creatives that also deserve the spotlight. Here are some of our favourite Black Canadian designers to shop all year round, from already-widely beloved labels to exceptional up-and-comers.

How do you gather a group of It girls during one of the busiest times in the fashion calendar? Open a stunning new store in the heart of New York City’s shopping district. This week, Hunter Schafer, Amelia Gray, Alex Consani, Justine Skye and more stopped by to celebrate H&M’s return to the artsy SoHo area at a pre-fashion week fête.

The party marked the exclusive sneak peek of the H&M Studio Spring 2024 collection, which blends bold 1970s style staples with modern silhouettes (and is available to shop on February 29). Naturally, attendees’ outfits were fabulous. Consani, wearing an H&M tube-top-mini-skirt set, said it best. “We’re not playing games tonight,” she told FASHION of her look. “Not one game.”

Last week, Wiarton Willie (Ontario’s groundhog, FYI) did not see his shadow. Whether or not we can trust his eyesight is beyond our jurisdiction, but we do know two things: Spring is supposedly coming early and eyewear brand BonLook agrees.

The Canadian label just dropped its Spring 2024 collection. The verdict? A sight for sore eyes (laugh please). Their bevy of styles include vibrant colours that will revitalize any tired wardrobe. Think energetic apricot, lime and rust hues.

A moderate bargain starting at $149 a frame, flinging into spring might be easier than you thought.

I’m not saying headbands are magical. But I’m not not saying that, either. You see, the age-old accessory is so much more than an individual item — it’s a loose concept rich with possibility and shape-shifting powers. It can punctuate a preppy statement, add intentionality to an athleisure outing, and complement a coquettish aesthetic. It’s no wonder that as fashion veers toward minimalism, the ostensibly simple add-on is absolutely thriving.

These days, every outfit seems to look better with a headband. Look no further than the roster of It girls flocking to the versatile doodad in all its forms. Mostly recently, model Kaia Gerber took the trend to new heights (er, widths?), accesorizing her après-ski outfit in St. Moritz with a super-wide Jennifer Behr headband.

Bella Hadid and Laura Harrier have been sporting sporty black bands in their chic street-style outings for a while. Headbands in all their varying forms have emerged as a red carpet trend — from Precious Lee and Emma Chamberlain at the Met Gala to Shay Mitchell’s doll-like look at the Barbie premiere.

And during a viral fashion-filled press tour this past summer, Jennifer Lawrence had a penchant for pairing thick, puffy headbands with her revolving door of elegant outfits. She has carried her love of the classic hair accessory into autumn, wearing a less voluminous leather version for the unveiling of the 2023 holiday windows at Saks Fifth Avenue in NYC on November 20.

Headbands are shaping up to be the must-have accessory of 2023. How does such a simple adornment have so much impact? Just refer to its head-spinning history, where different iterations have functioned as crowns of cultural commentary. In the 1920s, Vogue notes that headbands were used to push back on sartorial restrictions and often complemented defiantly chopped hairstyles. In the Second World War, headbands took on a functional role, with the iconic Rosie the Riveter famously fastening on a polka dot bandana to match her “We Can Do It!” message. Through the decades, varying headbands have starred in presidential campaign trails and ’80s workout posters. Transformation is at the core of the head-adorning style.

So while the headband trend is not new, there’s something fresh about its revived popularity — particularly when compared to the previous decade. The 2010s brought crystal-spun hair accessories with maximalist embellishments and bright colours. But 2023 is the age of quiet luxury and Sofia Richie minimalism. Now, headbands subtly elevate outfits with too-cool-to-care sophistication that is once again sparking cultural discourse. Take the renewed popularity of the simple black workout band, which Dazed called a sleuth status symbol. Not bad for something you can buy at a drugstore.

Above all, with their crown-like appearance, headbands communicate a certain kind of self-aware confidence. This is probably why, as much as they change, they’ll never go out of style. From polished slip-on designs to sleek stretchy materials, there’s a headband out there for every mood. Below, FASHION has curated the best options on the market right now.

The autumnal outfit add-on

Amazon headband trend

I’m all for living in the moment, but when I see something that screams fall fashion — regardless of the time of year — I have a duty to click add-to-cart. This was the case for this duo of velvet headbands. Sold together in colours black and rich burgundy, these headbands have an autumnal preppiness that would thrive alongside a plaid skirt and knee-high boots. Cher Horowitz would be proud.

The sleek leather option

If something embellished or pastel feels too sweet, a minimal headband iterated in black leather should give the girlish silhouette just enough toughness. Sported by Jennifer Lawrence for a holiday event in NYC with a classic preppy pairing of a crisp white blouse and black blazer, we love the idea of wearing an edgier fabric like leather with a festive ensemble: Think: a pair of grey silk trousers and a tonal knit top with a black leather headband and pumps (and maybe a dash of sparkle in the earlobes). Done!

The collegiate accoutrement

Sophie Buhai headband trend

A sturdy brown headband reliably communicates a well-dressed ready-to-learn mindset. Case in point: This tonal-brown slip-on piece by Sophie Buhai is handcrafted with acetate and shines with varying rich burl shades. Pair it with a cropped vest and slouchy slacks for a quintessential prepster look.

The bow-adorned accessory

ICYMI, bows are kinda big right now. Designers Sandy Liang and Simone Rocha are arbiters of the girlish add-on, which puts a decidedly romantic spin on everything it touches. Take this velvet design from Lele Sadoughi, which features a soft oversized bow that adds a dreamy delicate touch to any outfit.

The affordable status symbol

Amazon headband trend

Black stretchy headbands are no longer just for going to the gym. They’ve become a subgenre of the headband craze, cemented as a staple of trendy outfits — and not to mention a saving grace for lazy hair days. This fan-favourite Amazon offering comes with ten super soft elastic bands that thankfully won’t give you a headache. Pro tip: place it slightly on your forehead to cover your hairline for an egg-adjacent final look that inexplicably works.

The Barbiecore option

Anthropologie Barbiecore headband trend

The headband trend is Barbie-approved, obvi. Apart from styles worn by stars on the film’s press tour, Margot Robbie’s doll character was an originator of the 2020s headband craze, via the polka dot hair accessory she wore in a promotional poster from last year. This hot pink cushioned style is so comfy you’ll forget you’re wearing it. And since pink is officially the new black, it goes with everything.

The delicate flower crown

Simone Rocha headband trend

I’ve never given much thought to the uniform for frolicking through a field — until I spotted this Simone Rocha gem. The crystal accessory is adorned with daisy-like beaded flowers for a feminine take on the headband trend. Style it with a frothy babydoll dress and slip on a pair of ballet flats for the perfect ethereal summer day ensemble.

The quiet luxury look

Jennifer Behr headband trend

Worn by Jennifer Lawrence during her aforementioned summer press tour, this Jennifer Behr satin headband is generously padded for a luxe finish and guaranteed all-day comfort. Lawrence wore it to appear on Hot Ones, the interview show where celebs answer questions while eating painfully spicy chicken wings. How does one make that look good? The answer is this headband.

BEING BILLY

Against all odds, Billy Porter is a magnificent couture creation of his own making — one that has conquered the worlds of music, acting and fashion.

WORDS BY BERNADETTE MORRA

Billy Porter is a hugger. But I don’t realize this at first. He arrives at the FASHION cover shoot in a studio near New York’s Hudson Yards serving feisty realness like only Porter can. He is animated and emphatic as he bellows into his cellphone dealing with some issues around his divorce. In fact, he is so fired up that I can hear him coming from way down the hall. But when he finishes the call, he takes a deep breath and centres himself. And after that, there are cheery greetings and hugs all around — for me, for senior creative director George Antonopoulos, for the photographer, for the videographer and even for the fashion assistants. I get the feeling that if a cleaner were to come in to empty the trash bins, they would receive a hug, too.

Top, $20,595, pants, $19,950, and necklace (bottom), $970, Gucci. Boots, $295, Syro. Necklace (top), $550, and ring, $375, Dean Davidson.

Porter marches over to the makeup chair, where his beloved glam team is waiting. Makeup artist La Sonya Gunter has been working with Porter since 2013, when he was headlining the Broadway hit Kinky Boots, for which he won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. “You may see us bicker because she’s like my sister,” he tells me, waving his hand at Gunter. “From the first day,” she drawls. Later, his real half-sister MaryMartha Ford (nicknamed “M&M”), who works as one of his managers, drops by. It’s clear that Porter surrounds himself with a fun but selective mix of biological and chosen family. At one point, hairstylist Cheryl Bergamy-Rosa and Porter give me a lesson on “doodoo” or “dookie” braids — so called because they are the thickness of poop. “That’s an old-school southern term — we are lettin’ you in, woman!” Porter howls with a throaty laugh.

Letting people in seems to come naturally to the extroverted Porter, though in his 2021 memoir, Unprotected, he admits to erecting emotional walls to keep people out. And with good reason. His childhood was challenging, to say the least. At age five, he was sent to a doctor in an attempt to “fix” his love of girlie clothes and skipping rope. He was bullied and beaten (even on his first day of school), twice landing him in hospital. His stepfather sexually abused him from ages seven to 12, a violation that is even more heinous considering how he manipulated Porter into viewing him as a father figure and a source of comfort. Singing became an outlet, then a job, then a career. Things got off to a great start when he won Star Search, and US$100,000, in 1992 at age 22. But this is a world in which talent isn’t always enough. Porter has been told he sings too high and speaks too white. He’s been pigeonholed into playing Black stereotypes and passed over for being “too flamboyant.” But along the way, he learned to stand up for himself and was always certain of his talent. If you haven’t seen Porter’s confidence on display, Google his impromptu rendition of “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” at the 2019 Tony Awards.

Kinky Boots arrived at a point when he was bankrupt and homeless and sleeping on a patron’s couch. Even so, he took a chance and spoke up to convince the producers that his character should be gay and not a straight cross-dressing boxer, as originally written. They agreed. It was the first time he would see himself — a gay Black man playing a gay Black man — on Broadway.

I don’t move through the world ultra-masculine. I don’t move through the world ultra-feminine. I’m just there.

The show was a hit, but not without backlash. After a performance during the 2013 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Kinky Boots message of love and tolerance was attacked by right wingers. “I find it really odd that what I’m doing over here in my own life triggers you so much over there that you feel the need to beat me, hate me, shame me, take my rights away,” he says sharply. “Just leave me alone. Just leave us alone. Who am I hurting by expressing myself in this fabulous way? Nobody.”

More than 10 years later, Porter, at age 54, is pushing back harder than ever against hate— especially the type that comes from within. He is an outspoken role model for self-acceptance, something that is reflected in every aspect of his work. “When you are connected spiritually to all the things you embody, that’s where the healing lies,” he believes. Healing is something he talks about a lot. Of the 12 songs on Porter’s album Black Mona Lisa, released last November, almost all touch on his (sometimes rocky) road to overcoming shame, including his 2021 decision to come out as HIV positive after 14 years. His role as the ballroom emcee Pray Tell on Pose, a series set during the AIDS crisis in ’80s/’90s New York, helped with the emotional fallout from that trauma. “I lost more people by the age of 21 than my grandmother had at age 85,” Porter laments. “I used to always wonder ‘Why did I stay alive?’ Then I got that job and I’m like, ‘Oh, I survived to tell the story.’” He made history in 2019, when he became the first openly gay Black man to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. His rousing speech proclaimed “The category is love, y’all!!!” and he quoted author and civil rights activist James Baldwin: “‘It took many years of vomiting up all the filth I’d been taught about myself, and half-believed, before I was able to walk on the earth like I had a right to be here.’ I have the right. You have the right. We all have the right.”

Jacket, top and necklace (bottom), prices upon request, necklace (top), $550, Versace.
Top and shorts, prices upon request, Aknvas. Boots, $295, Syro. Bracelet, $1,490, Sterling King. Signet ring, $375, Dean Davidson. Rings, $15 each, H&M.

Unfortunately, not everyone agrees. A gay man in a dress is somehow perceived as a threat, especially to children, while a straight man in a dress — be it Robin Williams as Mrs. Doubtfire or Dustin Hoffman as Dorothy Michaels in Tootsie — is considered entertaining. Whether a predator is wearing a dress or not while engaged in sexual misconduct has absolutely nothing to do with it, Porter writes in his memoir. And no one knows that better than him. Furthermore, he questions why dresses are seen as masculine in certain contexts but not in others. “I was watching a fashion show by this African designer, and every single one of those men was in traditional African dress, which is a dress,” he points out. “So it’s weird to me that I get attacked for just expressing myself that way. Preachers wear robes. Jesus wore a robe. That’s a dress, y’all. So back up and leave me alone.”

Porter bursts into a few bars of song, something he does throughout the day. Maybe it’s a way of releasing tension. Like many artists, Porter seems thoroughly guided by a combination of intuition and angst. He moves with abandon in front of the camera, alternating sudden spins with balletic stances and graceful arm gestures. But he is specific about how he wants his hair and beard to look. “I have a very feminine face and a high, raspy voice, so it doesn’t take much for me to be misgendered,” he says. “If the hair looks feminine, then people start calling me ‘ma’am.’ That’s not a problem. But I want rock ’n’ roll edgy, not feminine, and there’s a fine line. It’s non-binary, really. I think if I were younger, I would probably identify as non-binary. Because I don’t move through the world ultra-masculine. I don’t move through the world ultra-feminine. I’m just there.”

Porter’s efforts to de-gender clothing are nothing short of magnificent, most notably with the Christian Siriano tuxedo gown he wore to the 2019 Oscars. The look broke the internet, and every one of his Met Gala and red-carpet appearances since have nudged forward the concept of what a man could, and perhaps even should, wear. “Fashion exists in a really expansive space for me,” he says. “It’s spiritual and political. Every time I show up, I’m a walking piece of activist art.”

Coat, $5,880, pants, $1,175, and brooch, $1,070, Alexander McQueen. Ring (bottom), $7,150, and ring (top), $3,700, Tiffany & Co.

Avant-garde designers Yohji Yamamoto, Rick Owens and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons are among his go-to names. “And I love wearing Thom Browne when people need to know I’m educated and fancy at the same time,” Porter says. “He takes classic silhouettes and suits and explodes them into the fantastical. That’s me. I’m very classic, but I’m also way over the top. I think people would be surprised at my closet, because I have really simple stuff for my everyday life.” Or at least his definition of simple, like the oversized black Yohji jumpsuit with swinging silver chains that he shows up to set in. His caftans run from solid-coloured sequins to psychedelic swirls. The loose cover-ups were his uniform during the COVID shutdowns, an experience that was painfully triggering. “COVID was like being snatched right back into the AIDS crisis,” he shares.

Being fully Billy will hopefully include having his own fashion brand one day. “I’ve learned over the past few years how specific my vision is and how freeing it is to people,” he says. In the meantime, Porter continues to slay with his music and onscreen. After playing a divorcing dad locked in a custody battle in Our Son, released last December, he will turn his attention to the role of Baldwin in an upcoming biopic. And he’s spreading love, and lots of hugs no doubt, by setting up a philanthropic foundation and by playing an advisory role on The Bow, a digital hub for LGBTQIA2S+ people in the works by Toronto creative director Matthew McLaughlin. “I ain’t stopping,” Porter vows. “Like I say on the album, ‘Haven’t even started yet. Haven’t even broke a sweat,’ darlings. There’s so much work to do.”

When you think about fur, chances are you think about Carrie Bradshaw. For millennials, Sex and the City’s controversial heroine was the fur coat’s greatest ambassador. Carrie accessorized it with a ballpark hot dog at a Yankees baseball game (where she later picked up the newest rookie), draped herself in it while meeting Mr. Big for a rendezvous, and threw it on as she dashed through New York City on New Years Eve (IYKYK).

But since the 1980s, the once seemingly fabulous textile, donned by 1950s bombshells, wealthy socialites, and our favourite pop culture icons, has slowly become persona non grata in the fashion world as consumers made an industry-wide push for more sustainable, ethical and humane practices from our favourite brands and celebrities. And it’s working — luxury brands like Balmain, Chanel, Prada, and Coach are no longer using real fur in their lines. In January 2023, the state of California banned the manufacturing and sale of luxury fur pelts, and even the late Queen Elizabeth II and Kim Kardashian dropped fur from their wardrobes.

However, fur is making a comeback — vintage fur, that is. The last year has seen the return of fur via Penny Lane coats, the ’70s aesthetic, and earlier this year, as a nod to The Sopranos’ beloved, if beleaguered, matriarch Carmela Soprano as part of the#MobWifeAesthetic and #MobWifeWinter. This had led to an influx of vintage mink, raccoon, sable and fox on the racks at our favourite thrift stores, and vintage fur hauls on our TikTok FYPs, with “It-Girl Fur coats” and “How to style” videos racking up hundreds of thousands of views and comments — most of them positive.

@maybe.zainab babes did u forget ur getting this stuff for free #thriftstore #thrifting #valuevillage #goodwill #salvationarmy #salvos #delulu #delusional #furcoats #vintagecoat #inflation ♬ BIZCOCHITO NEVER DULL REMIX – Never Dull

It’s a renaissance of sorts. But is that a bad thing? Is vintage the answer to finally making fur in fashion sustainable and ethical? It kind of depends who you ask.

The main concern against fur has always been around the farming of it, for both sustainability and ethics reasons. Animal rights orgs like PETA and Canada’s Animal Justice have long shared graphic images and details about the treatment that animals with coveted furs have faced in fur farming. And according to Collective Fashion Justice, fur farming can have a negative impact on the environment — often in unsuspecting ways. While scholarly research is still tough to come by, animal rights and anti-fur organizations posit that the amount of emissions it takes to contain, feed, and then kill animals is detrimental to the environment. And a 2012 report prepared for Nova Scotia Environment by Michael Byrlinsky of Acadia University found a link between extreme water degradation and phosphorus inputs from the province’s then 150 mink farms. A 2013 study from CE Delft found that producing 1 kg of mink fur has a higher negative environmental impact than producing the same amount of other textiles (in large part due to the amount of meat-based feed minks require).

Vintage fur is sustainable — if you have to wear it

For this reason, “Vintage is definitely the best way to go if you absolutely have to have fur,”says Kelly Drennan, the founder of Fashion Takes Action, a Canadian non-profit organization promoting sustainability in fashion. “Have to have” is, of course, pretty subjective but for Drennan, the meaning is clear: “Have to have fur means you live somewhere really cold where you need to have [fur] to keep yourself warm.” Of course, people always want what they can’t have and don’t need, which is why vintage is the best possible option for those outside of these environments, drawing on something that already exists in the world. “[With vintage], it’s already been made, it’s already out there, and really the best thing that we could be doing with our clothes is keeping them in use for as long as possible and out of landfill,” Drennan says.

Which seems to be the case, at least for now. With thrifting on the rise for millennials and Gen Z in recent years, the secondhand market is booming, predicted to double by 2027 globally and grow three times faster than the market apparel overall, per a 2023 report from ThredUp.

“You sort of have these ‘levels of badness,’” Drennan adds. “Faux fur is the worst, real fur would be after that, and vintage fur would be the best of them all.”

Wearing fur — even vintage — can send a certain message

So, that must mean secondhand is best, right? It’s not that simple. While vintage fur may be more sustainable in that they’re not adding new waste to the environment, secondhand fur can come with issues, too. While your mom’s mink coat may have years or maybe even decades of separation between the practices that went into having it made and the time it finally hangs in your closets, animal activists say that historical distance doesn’t really make much of a difference because of the message wearing fur can send in 2024 — that you’re comfortable with the specific practices that went into crafting your newest outerwear. “When you look at the extreme violence that goes into making a real fur coat, wearing one at all, whether it’s new or vintage, is sending a message that it’s acceptable to torture and kill a living being and to wear a part of their body,” says PETA director Ashley Byrne.

That ethos doesn’t necessarily apply to everyone. For Indigenous designer Taalrumiq, using fur isn’t an aesthetic whim, it’s integral to her culture and history. “Working with furs is like a second nature, it’s so natural to me,” the Inuvialuk designer tells FASHION. Growing up in her home community of Tuktoyaktuk in the Northwest Territories, Taalrumiq says her community relied on fur for survival as a natural resource, and part of Indigenous practices which include utilizing all parts of the animal. It’s also a way to carry on family traditions. “What I’m creating is so much more than just a product to sell,” Taalrumiq says, “there’s an educational component and there’s all the history and the story that’s intertwined.

@taalrumiq #Fur #Inuit #Inuvialuit #IndigenousTiktok #Fashion ♬ please check out my obiwan edit – ob1wans ✧

The designer also uses vintage and recycled fur in her pieces, as a way to lean into her cultural tenet of reusing and repurposing materials.

Taalrumiq says her designs can be worn by those not from Indigenous communities, in order to open up conversations and learn about Indigenous culture. Outside of Indigenous designers and communities, however, the ethics can feel a little less-straightforward, even when it comes to vintage fur.

Even though you may know you’re donning a sentimental secondhand family heirloom or your new favourite find from painstakingly parsing the racks of Value Village, those on the street don’t, which can lead to not only potential harassment, but mixed messaging. “The more people who are out there wearing fur, does that send the wrong message that fur is OK again?,” Drennan asks. “It’s hard because you’ve got this balance between the environmental impact, but then there’s the ethics side of it, too. This trend is sort of icky just because what is it doing? Is it going to get people out buying [new] fur or is it going to get them buying plastic fur?”

It’s about deciding what aligns with your values

In short: It’s pretty complicated. At the end of the day, it really comes down to what you’re comfortable with. It can be difficult, not to mention expensive and inaccessible, to purchase a wardrobe of exclusively sustainably and ethically made clothing, especially since when we’re talking about ethical fashion, we’re also talking about more than just animal rights.

“Ethics can obviously apply to animal welfare, but also the human right side, like the people that make our clothes,” Drennan notes. “Sometimes you have to pick what aligns the most with your own values.” For some people, ethical fashion may not be about the material and how it’s made, but rather who made the garment and whether or not they were paid fairly; in which case, donning vintage fur might be OK with you. “[That’s] the beauty,” Drennan adds. “While the term sustainability and fashion is so broad and sometimes overwhelming and confusing because it means so many things, the beauty of it is that it means so many things. You can kind of pick and choose which way to go based on what aligns with your values.”

@haileyharttt #vintagefur #furcoat ♬ Grow A Pear – Ke$ha

Drennan — for her part — has two mink fur coats that have been passed down from her grandmother. She’s decided not to wear them (outside of a Mad Men costume party, of course), instead storing them in a garment bag in her closet.

For anyone who is looking to add secondhand fur to their wardrobe, be it via a fabulous coat, shrug, or fur-lined hat, Drennan advises making sure that what you’re purchasing is authentic, so you’re not contributing to landfill waste via synthetic faux fur, which Drennan says is akin to a plastic bag when it comes to breaking down in a landfill (i.e.: it won’t). And most importantly? “Make sure that it’s in good shape and then just continue to keep it in good shape,” she says. “Care for it well, like you should all of your clothes, and then if you don’t want it, sell it or donate it.” Chances are, like Carrie Bradshaw and her will-they-won’t-they lover Big, the trend will come back around.

’Tis the season to be thinking about women’s winter coats, but might we instead turn your attention to women’s tank tops? To some, these versatile basics scream summer, but they’re a key wardrobe staple at any time of year.

What to look for in this year’s best women’s tank tops

Both basic and essential, tank tops are unsurprisingly many designers’ go-to. The simple style has taken centre stage in recent seasons, appearing on the runways of Bottega Veneta, David Koma and Jil Sander among others.

Utilitarian details like ribbed textures and thick straps have stood out as high-fashion favourites. But as sexy sheer clothing continues to trend, luxe satin fabrics with lace detailing are also among the tank top stylings du jour.

How to style tank tops for women

The beauty of the humble tank top is that it can be both the main event and the layering secret sauce. In warmer months, a crisp ribbed white tank with a pair of baggy jorts and Adidas Sambas offers a model-off-duty moment.

But when worn under a blazer, it offers a lightweight contrast to an otherwise serious sophisticated ensemble. When in doubt, women’s tank tops are the ideal base layer for building out any outfit.

On February 4, Miley Cyrus took to the 2024 Grammys stage to perform her award-winning song, “Flowers.” The tune, from her 2023 album Endless Summer Vacation, is a certified bop; an anthem for independent people everywhere who are embracing themselves and saying they don’t need a partner to have fun — they can do that all on their own.

Watching Cyrus, who’d taken home her first Grammy (!) earlier that night, rocking a silver 2002 vintage Bob Mackie dress from the designers “To Broadway With Love” collection with her hair teased to the gods, it was hard not to feel like we were witnessing the birth of a star — or in this case, a new certified diva.

A post shared by Miley Cyrus (@mileycyrus)

Cyrus’ latest looks, along with her musical evolution, have cemented the singer as a diva-in-training, following in the footsteps of legends like Tina Turner (a fellow Bob Mackie fan) and Cher. When it comes to her ability to reinvent herself, she is arguably this generation’s Madonna. And yes, Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga should be shaking in her boots.

To be clear, people didn’t always necessarily think “diva” when considering Cyrus. After all, she got her start on the Disney Channel at age 14, playing the role of a goofy incognito country singer on Hannah Montana. When it came to her style during this time, Cyrus dressed like most tweens in the mid-2000s, donning skirts over pants and cropped sweaters.

When the show ended in 2011, a then 19-year-old Cyrus was fresh off her first feature film, The Last Song, and in a relationship with future husband (now ex-husband) Liam Hemsworth. She was growing up, becoming a star outside of her teeny-bopper days, and her style reflected that. During this time, Cyrus leaned into old Hollywood cues on the red carpet, wearing designers like Jenny Packham. It was soft, it was sweet, it was safe — and it didn’t necessarily have a whole lot to say.

Then came the #Bangerz years. Shortly before her split from Hemsworth in 2013, the singer chopped and bleached her hair and  took to the VMAs stage with Robin Thicke and a foam finger for a performance we *all* remember. Arguably Cyrus’ most problematic era, in that she was consistently appropriating and emulating Black culture, her style during this period was defined by the shock factor, something Cyrus has said was a means to separate herself from the Disney character she’d played as a teen.

Post-Bangerz, the actor bopped around style-wise, trying dreadlocked ponytails (*shudder*) and harnesses, before reuniting with fiancé Hemsworth in January 2016. Until their final break-up in 2019, Cyrus — then 27 — had leaned into a rocker-chic aesthetic, donning the wet-look hair and tons of black and leather, mixing it up with designers like Stella McCartney and Saint Laurent.

A post shared by Miley Cyrus (@mileycyrus)

In short, Cyrus’ style has been all over the place. But we shouldn’t be too surprised. Cyrus has spoken about the impact that being on a show like Hannah Montana at such a young age had on her identity and style. During a March 2021 interview on Spotify’s Rock This with Allison HagendorfCyrus shared that Hannah “was a character almost as often as I was myself,” saying that — like her character — she felt that when she looked like herself, without the glitz and glam of being thee Miley Cyrus, that no one cared about her.

“That’s maybe why I almost created a characterized version of myself at times,” Cyrus said. “I never created a character where it wasn’t me, but I was aware of how people saw me and I maybe played into it a little bit.”

A post shared by Miley Cyrus (@mileycyrus)

But this new Miley Cyrus era feels different. Since her 2019 divorce from Hemsworth, and after a brief dip into a more ’80s punk rock aesthetic, the star has taken a step back from the public eye in many ways. She’s been dating relative normie drummer Maxx Morando since 2021, has focused on different acting roles (like starring in Season 5 of Black Mirror), and — after years of changing her sound — released some of the most acclaimed music of her career.

As Cyrus has entered her 30s, she’s seemingly settled into herself and is ready to embrace her power — and you can see that in her style. In a May 2023 interview with British Vogue, Bradley Kenneth (Cyrus’ stylist since 2015) said the singer typically references royals, goddesses, and divas with her looks, including Erykah Badu, Destiny’s Child, Grace Jones, Whitney Houston and Brandy.

“I’m also obsessed with ancient Egyptian queens like Nefertiti and Cleopatra, and greek goddesses like Aphrodite and Hera,” Kenneth also said of his references for styling Cyrus. That tracks. Cyrus’ Grammy looks specifically seemed to emulate 1970s-era divas of the singing world like Tina Turner and Cher in both their silhouettes and designers. And this is no coincidence. As WWD notes, Turner was a fan of Bob Mackie, calling on the designer during the 1970s and ’80s during her disco era. This was shortly after her divorce from her former musical partner Ike Turner, when the singer emerged from his shadow and reinvented herself.

Similarly, the 1970s is when Cher came into her own as a performer and TV personality, launching both the The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour as well as her own namesake show, Cher. Cyrus has worn Bob Mackie before, donning another archival dress from the same 2002 collection to perform at her 2022 NBC New Year’s Eve special. It’s clear that she turns to the designer in moments when she wants to feel strong and powerful.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Bob Mackie (@bobmackie)

Cyrus paying homage to these divas is no coincidence, signalling that, after years of being in the shadow — of the industry, men in her life, and constant criticism — Cyrus is similarly coming into her own. And we can probably expect a similar vibe fashion-wise moving forward, with Cyrus leaning into archival ’fits that honour the greats for her eardrum-shattering performances, and a more simple, streamlined look when she’s offstage.

Is it just us or did the Grammys red carpet 2024 feel a little…quiet? When it came to A-list celebrities, the likes Rihanna, Adele, Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande were nowhere to be found, and even Taylor Swift was a question mark until the very last minute. (Swift, heading to Tokyo this week before next Sunday’s Super Bowl, was rumoured to be skipping the Grammys but walked the carpet just before the ceremony commenced — in custom Schiaparelli, no less!)

There were a few fashionable bright spots on the Grammys red carpet, led by Dua Lipa in custom Courreges, Olivia Rodrigo in vintage Versace circa 1995 and Caroline Polachek in Olivier Theyskens’ Fall 1998 collection. (Hat tip to beloved Instagram account Check the Tag for the vintage intel.)

Plus, a few mega stars bypassed the red carpet and slipped into the Grammys for the ceremony only. Case in point: Canadian treasure Céline Dion who wowed the crowd in a surprise on-stage appearance. The legendary songstress, who has been privately battling a neurological condition called stiff-person syndrome for the last couple of years, drew standing ovations and looked stunning in Valentino couture. Former FASHION cover star Law Roach even reportedly came out of retirement to style her for the moving moment.

Taylor Swift is known for many things: Being a record-breaking songstress, an easter egg queen, and the saviour of famous millennial divorcées (CC Sophie Turner). Fashion doesn’t typically rank high on that list. The singer has her own sense of (kind of so-so) style, tending to not opt for edgy or trend-forward designers like many other celebs her age.

But maybe it’s time to pay a little more attention to Swift’s sartorial choices, especially what she’s been wearing on the sidelines of boyfriend Travis Kelce’s football games. The singer has been wearing a ton of small, female-owned brands lately, and the items she’s sporting have been selling out, proving that the Taylor Swift effect is very real.

Taylor Swift’s football fan style

In October of last year, Swift showed up to a Kansas City Chiefs game wearing a vintage Chiefs sweatshirt, paired with a pleated skirt and heeled loafers. She looked adorable, and even cuter was the fact that the top was sourced from Canadian, female-owned brand Ellie Mae.

Not only was Swift photographed cheering on her beau alongside sports bestie Brittany Mahomes, but she was later pictured leaving the stadium hand-in-hand with her BF — the vintage sweater front and centre. The internet went crazy for it, asking where they could find the same perfectly distressed sweater as Swift.

On January 13 of this year, Swift once again made another fashion statement when she showed up to a game in a custom, one-of-a-kind Chiefs jacket designed and created by Kristin Juszcyzk, the wife of San Francisco 49ers player Kyle Juszcyzk.

And on January 26, Swift took to the field after the Chief’s AFC Championship win in a gaggle of female-founded brands, wearing a sweater from friend Gigi Hadid’s Guests in Residence, the Heirloom Ring from Canadian brand Mejuri and a small #87 jersey ring — Kelce’s number – on her pointer finger from Kansas City brand Eb and Co.

The Taylor Swift effect

It may not seem like more than a cute outfit, but the reality is that, seeing stars like Taylor Swift don these brands does have a tangible impact. Weeks after Swift wore her jacket designed by Juszcyzk, the designer secured a licensing agreement with the NFL, obtaining permission to legally use NFL imagery on her apparel.

Basically, Swift’s exposure has made Juszcyzk’s designs so buzzy that the NFL — one of the most lucrative sports organizations in the world — knows that it pays off in advertising and promotion to align themselves with her. And there’s a monetary impact for these brands, too.

Much like the Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle effects — the phenomena in which whatever these two royals wear instantly sells out — the Taylor Swift effect is happening here, too. EB and Co., the makers of Swift’s #87 jersey ring, quickly sold out of the $14 USD ring, posting that they’re now taking pre-orders for the next batch.

Canadian designer Ellie Mae Waters was getting her nails done in October of last year, scrolling through TikTok, when she first realized the superstar was wearing one of the vintage Kansas City Chief sweaters sourced for her Toronto-based brand, Ellie Mae. Two weeks before, Waters had reached out via her PR to the singer’s stylist to see if Swift would  be interested in receiving some vintage pieces. She was. So Waters sent the package, not expecting much — if anything, that Swift would wear it casually around her house on a lazy day.

“I got a text that she liked [the sweater],” Waters tells FASHION, “and that was kind of where it was left; I was just so happy that she liked it, I thought that’s cool, it’ll be an inner-moment thing with me and [my team], no one else will ever know — but that was good, I loved that.”

A post shared by Ellie Mae Studios (@elliemaestudios)

Realizing Swift not only wore the sweater, but wore it on the sidelines of a game? “It’s exciting,” Waters says. “I love vintage so much because they are one-offs, they’re one of a kind, and they have so much history in them. And so the thought of Taylor Swift wearing this — she’s giving this piece this whole other story and this whole other life.”

The response online was immediate. As Waters told Toronto Life in an interview shortly after the game, by the end of that Sunday the brand had gained almost 1,000 new social followers and 12,000 visitors to the site. “It felt like any piece of collegiate vintage that we had on the site, it was gone immediately,” Waters tells FASHION. “These women didn’t care that they didn’t have the same sweater, but if they could say that they bought their vintage at the same place that Taylor Swift got it, that was enough for them.”

The impact of Taylor Swift wearing smaller, female-owned brands

Taylor Swift knows she’s that girl right now. Her every move is watched, scrutinized, and obsessed over, so it’s no coincidence that Swift — not normally known for making grand statements with her sartorial style — is choosing to do so on a stage of this size while centering smaller, female-owned brands.

This is especially significant considering all of the flak she’s received from many football fans for simply showing up to support her boyfriend, with people telling the singer that she’s “ruining football” and blaming Swift for the team’s performance (which, considering they’re going to the Super Bowl, we’d have to say is pretty good). By spotlighting these female-owned brands, it’s like Swift is intentionally giving a big middle finger to the haters and leaning into the idea that no press is bad press.

And let’s be real, this is intentional, after all she’s the *queen* of easter eggs and hidden messaging. “I don’t think that Taylor Swift does anything by mistake,” Waters agrees, “and I mean that in a good way.” Waters points to Swift showing up for — and highlighting — Juszcyzk, the wife of an opposing team member. “You don’t have to do that,” Waters says. “I feel like with Taylor Swift, if there’s a way that she can help women, she will do it.”

And for small businesses, this type of exposure is a dream come true. “When it comes to small businesses, having anybody, whether it’s Taylor Swift [or] the woman that lives next door to you, out there sharing something that you created, it will always move the needle,” Waters says, “whether that’s with followers, sales, or simply just giving that small business that little bit more of a boost they need to get up the next day and do this all over again.”

Planning a vacation? Sure, durable luggage and quality toiletry bags are practical must-haves — but any fashion enthusiast can agree that the best beach cover-ups are key when hitting a sandy locale.

What to look for in the best beach cover-ups

When it comes to spending a day by the water, stylist Jaclyn Patterson suggests building out your outfit with a few necessities. “My recommendation is to style your bathing suit with a hat, sunglasses, and beach cover-up,” she says. Her advice for selecting the latter? Opt for pale colours and breathable fabrics.

Linen, for instance, is lightweight enough to keep you cool, but is also substantial enough to give you a reliable layer of sun protection. If your top priority is staying shielded from the sun, a trustee button-down will do the trick. But if you’re looking for experimental styling statements, a crochet number can offer semi-coverage while showing your bathing suit off.

A sarong, she adds, is a particularly good choice because of its versatility. “[Wear it] around your waist as a skirt or draped over your shoulders,” she explains. “Combined with sunglasses and a hat, you’ll be dressed to feel your best.”

This article was originally published in August 2023 and has been updated.

Fashion loves nothing more than a shoe that raises eyebrows. Crocs are inexplicably in the midst of an ongoing renaissance. Margiela’s Tabis‘ unconventional split-toe design has become a cult favourite. Last year, Mschf’s Big Red Boots broke the internet thanks to their confusing cartoonish design and absurd dimensions. And now, a surprising new style reigns supreme in the realm of impractical shoes: mesh flats.

The closest you can get to going barefoot without entirely forgoing protection, mesh flats reveal smushed-together toes and feet that look as though they are protruding from shoes. While strategically concealing and exposing the foot, they are the immediate star of any outfit thanks to their, well, weirdness. The see-through style — which is basically just the tights-as-pants fad, but for your feet — has been dubbed an undeniably “sensual trend” because of its commitment to putting toes on display. Simply put, it takes all the polarizing aspects of the coveted ballet flat and doubles down on them. Unsupportive soles? Probably not great in the rain? A sweat-trapping hazard? Yes to all of the above.

Logistically, mesh flats make no sense. But visually, these sleek second skins are the perfect choice for today’s It shoe sentiments. These are not the Carrie Bradshaw Manolo Blahniks of yore. In an era of recession core, the ultra-thin naked flats have become a must-have footwear trend because they are decidedly under the radar about it all.

Unsurprisingly, The Row was the first to champion the unassuming coolness of the see-through style, thanks to its fan-favourite Mesh Sock Flats. Since then, brands like Sandy Liang, Khaite, Bottega Veneta, Alaïa and more have given their take on the trend, often quickly selling out and garnering even more curiosity over the shoe that’s not quite a shoe.

Throughout 2023, mesh flats took off among fashion crowds and trendsetters du jour, paired with styles of all kinds, from denim ensembles to maxi skirts. A casually dressed Jennifer Lawrence is often spotted in fishnet Mary Janes by Alaïa or invisible slip-ons by The Row. In the summer, Chrissy Teigen flaunted her mesh flats on Instagram, while Sofia Richie wore Alaïa’s bedazzled iteration to “run errands.” (Presumably the expensive kind, like getting a $23 smoothie at Erewhon.)

As the ultimate antithesis of traditional towering high heels, it’s not hard to see the appeal of mesh flats. Sure, they may not be orthopedic-friendly or stain-resistant, but there’s something decidedly enticing about them.

In all its impractical glory, the flat mesh shoe is the culmination of quiet luxury. It’s understated yet refined; effortless yet put-together. It’s the shoe that couldn’t be bothered to commit to being a shoe. It’s a way of taking the straightforward, objectively simple design of the ballet flat and infusing it with intention. Whether it’s embellished with crystals and floral appliqués or made in straightforward netting or crocheted styles, the see-through flat functions first and foremost to adorn the foot in new, nonsensical ways. And nothing says It shoe more than that.

Ready to take the first step in showing your toes? (Sorry.) Styles are selling out fast, so below, FASHION rounded up the best mesh flats on the market right now.

For the pop culture-obsessed, there is almost too much to keep up with these days. Barbie discourse! Celebrity lip-reading kerfuffles! Zendaya’s new bangs! One thing that we simply cannot allow to get lost in the shuffle? Kylie Jenner and her masterful fashion week looks.

ICYMI, Ms. Jenner has been going through something of a style shift as of late. After moving into minimalism in 2023 and bringing us back to the 2010s with pink hair at the top of the new year, the beauty mogul is now ubiquitous at fashion month. Taking a break from accompanying Timothée Chalamet to awards shows, the 26-year-old is currently in France, garnering gasps with every front row she graces. And there have been, as the French say, beaucoup.

Look no further than the Jacquemus show on January 29, where she sported a red fitted mini dress from the label’s new collection. Featuring a chest slit cutout and a chiffon overlay, Jenner pulled off perfect colour-coordination with her daughter Stormi.

And there is more where that came from. It appears Jenner, who reportedly works with sister styling duo Alexandra and Mackenzie Grandquist, has been on a mission to bring opulence to every outing.

The week before, she started off her stay in Europe with a (literal) bang: debuting a side-swept micro-fringe. Sported alongside an off-the-shoulder sheer skintight dress, this Parisian hairstyle served as a harbinger of OTT glamour to come.

On January 24, she attended the Jean-Paul Gaultier by Simone Rocha show in a corset dress with a gauzy overlay. Sitting next to Kelly Rutherford (Gossip Girl icon and Instagram It girl), Jenner exuded undeniable Upper East Side luxury.

Later that evening, she was once again accompanied by Stormi for her next outing. Headed to the Valentino show, the pair coordinated in black dresses with feathered detailing. For maximum diva effect, both wore dark sunglasses — despite the sun having very much set.

The following day, Jenner turned up the dial on the silver trend in a metallic dress festooned with scale-like sequins. Sporting soaking-wet hair, she drove home the otherworldly effect with a pair of ruched tulle opera gloves. Are they a stunning accoutrement? Yes. Will serve as an obstacle when it comes to scratching an itch or eating a snack? Absolutely. Slaying is thankless work!

Over the weekend, Kylie Jenner took a break from fashion week front-row duties. Instead, she went for dinner in many a jaw-dropping ensemble, from a crushed velvet vintage Alaïa set to a MM6 Maison Margiela babydoll dress with knee-high tan boots.

Say what you will about Kylie Jenner, but her fashion week outfits make waves. She debuted an animal head at Schiaparelli! She was an early adopter of the no-pants trend at Loewe! Her schedule may be packed between promoting Khy and attending Wonka screenings, but Jenner will always make time to turn heads with her style.

What’s next? The return of that one shockingly vibrant turquoise wig? We can only pray.

It takes a lot to make a room full of fashion editors giddy, but that’s exactly what happened when the FASHION team got together at our weekly production meeting and started discussing Paris Couture Week 2024. “Could you believe Alaïa?!” cried one of our directors. “What about Simone Rocha at Jean Paul Gaultier!” countered another. “Was this the best couture week ever?” asked editor-in-chief Bernadette Morra. And unequivocally, we all agreed it was — or, at least, the best in the last few years.

You see, couture is rarely quiet. While the origins of these luxurious collections are rooted in craftsmanship, quality, and attention to detail, they’ve recently become a bit of a shouting match. Why use one sparkle when thousands will suffice? Whose dress has the widest circumference? What look can get the most likes on Instagram? You get the idea.

But this Spring 2024 season has designers returning to a (excuse the overused phrase) quiet luxury of sorts. That’s not to say it was without its theatrics, opulence, and, yes, sparkle; just that dressmaking and sewing prowess got more of the spotlight.

Take Alaïa, whose less is more approach to red carpet-ready gowns was a masterclass of refined taste. Creative director Pieter Mulier used only merino wool yarn and challenged himself to produce 43 very different looks. The result was a profound study of “the curve” and deserves to be seen on every A-list star for the rest of this awards season (hint, hint, Law Roach!).

Jean Paul Gaultier found similar success under the direction of Simone Rocha. Beautifully blending her dreamy aesthetic with iconic emblems of the Gaultier brand, Rocha created a collection unmistakably her own but showed depth and versatility well beyond her years in the industry.

And then there was Pierpaolo Piccioli at Valentino, who continues to prove why he is, and forever will be, couture’s Lord and Saviour. He presented an effortlessly elegant and colourful offering that, on the surface, looks simple to produce, but that is actually technical wizardry — ask anyone who’s ever sewn a seam. Florence Pugh will undoubtedly have difficulty choosing only one to wear on her next press tour.

And we haven’t even gotten to Schiaparelli, Chanel, Dior and more! See for yourself below as we’ve rounded up some of our favourite looks from Paris Couture Week 2024.

Love is in the air — romantic, friendship, brotherly and now sisterly (we see you Chloe and Halle Bailey). This Valentine’s day, Pandora has launched a new brand platform titled “Be Love,” a multi-season campaign that drives home the notion that love is more than just a calendar date or a fleeting feeling — it is something one does, lives, embodies and embraces every day.

In the star-studded campaign, three new global ambassadors are introduced for the first time: sisters Chloe and Halle and actress, author and advocate Selma Blair. Arriving in tandem with a range of new jewellery collections, you’ll find pieces made from high-quality sterling silver, 14 karat gold, murano glass and lab-grown diamonds.

A post shared by Canada Goose (@canadagoose)

Brooklyn-based streetwear brand KidSuper has hopped on court with Canada Goose and the NBA to design a limited-edition four-piece capsule for their ongoing partnership. Featuring a reversible fleece jacket, reversible puffer vest,  toque and more, these new designs debuted on January 21 at KidSuper’s Fall 2024 runway show during Paris Menswear Fashion Week.

Central to the collection is designer Colm Dillane’s colourful and whimsical art (which needs no introduction!). Look close enough and you’ll see an abstract iteration of excited fans connecting through sports, a print exclusive to this collaboration in celebration of the 2024 NBA All-Star game. The other key artwork in the collection illustrates snowy mountain peaks and frozen waters — a northern scene known to Canada Goose’s identity.

‘Tis the season for jewellery lovers to rejoice. COS is introducing a stackable jewellery capsule ahead of V-Day, and it transcends seasons and gender.

The eclectic rings, earrings, bracelets and charms are designed with interesting textures and irregular shapes, exuding a certain kind of uniqueness not found in most jewellery collections. And although the brand’s use of recycled materials is impressive, the semi-precious stones are the real game-changers. Think clear quartz for clarity and healing, smoky quartz to ground and protect, blue eye tiger to calm and vibrant pink jade to purify.

Dior Délicat is the crème de la crème of Haute Couture Jewellery

While admiring haute couture collections this time of year, jewellery is not to be forgotten. Take Dior Délicat, for example. Dreamed up by Victoire de Castellane, creative director of Dior Fine Jewellery, this new collection takes all the principles of couture and applies them to jewellery.

Not only does each piece embrace the contours of the wrists, hands and neck (just like couture garments would), the skeletons mimick lace, making it easy to mistaken them for embroidery. Inlaid with glowing rubies, emeralds, blue sapphires, rubellites and tanzanite, its clear that only the most marvellous materials have been chosen for this 79-piece assortment.

Hilary MacMillan introduces The Trench Collection

The collection will drop on hilarymacmillan.com at noon on February 12, but first will launch exclusively at Hilary MacMillan’s very first NYC pop-up shop, running during New York Fashion Week from February 9 to 11. Here’s to standing out in a sea of black winter jackets.
